Thanks for that, just been offered a DRZ, had heard so much about the 3x3 mod but not being mechanically minded didn’t really understand the benefits. That was really clear and helpful. I ride an xt660x a the moment and it shares some of the unhelpful characteristics.
Awesome video! Precious owner did the 3x3 air box and aftermarket pipe... but never re-jetted. My DRZ is a backfire machine lol... I have the JD jet kit and I’m super excited to get all of the improvements that come with it, but mostly to neutralize the fuel air mix so my ears stop ringing!
That was one of the best videos for the DRZ, and 3x3 info, I have ever watched... and Ive watched a ton. I did my 3x3 knowing everything up front that you mentioned but i had to find it from forums and it was far less interesting. Its not gonna turn a tractor into rocket, but it makes the tractor a better tractor. Yes there is alot of info on this that has already been said, and you didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. BUT.... because of its information and how well it was done it should be added to current 3x3 mod forum threads, FAQs, and such, that exist.
Good job. I have modded several DRZs and it is essential to use an aftermarket needle to get the power gains, which are low and mid. Top end is not gonna change without FCR carb and E cams. The gains are useful but modest with stock exhaust, change that and it is definitely a lot stronger, again low and mid only. On my S with 15-43 gearing I could stand up and lift the front to balance in top gear, that was with Dynojet kit/needle and CRD pipe. The pipe was free flowing but not straight through, I think a bit of back pressure is a good thing. Same pipe on my current DRZ with JD jetting seems a bit less powerful but good fuel consumption.
Thanks for your service dude! I just got my drz, after 10 years of owning 600cc - 1000cc sport bikes. Coming off high performance machineS i know how much the airbox design and choke points on it like snorkels help to improve low-end torque, something that 4cyl inline kinda need. So when i've read about the 3x3 mod i was like "heck no, that's gonna kill the strong point of this bike! The low end torque!" So i just tried to remove the snorkel, and i'm actualy kinda impress, the bike feels much more responsive, and i get less "blips stalling", but still wasnt sure about going full 3x3, mostly also because i can't get a kit here where i live. But now i'm kinda considering to go full 3x3 and order single jets from another brand, instead of a full kit, doing some research about the size i need, mostly because the "blips stalling" still happens sometimes, and is very very annoying, even dangerous sometimes, stalling the bike with the handlebars turned is not very fun. Pretty sure i'm gonna lose a little bit of low end torque, but the pros seems more interesting than a jerky drammatic motorcycle that shut off randomly :P
seba alge thanks for the comment. You are right that the low end will be affected. That being said, it’s not drastic and it’s not as much a loss in power but a smoother delivery. Don’t worry about the performance it will pretty much be a stock DRZ... You may consider rejetting it without the 3x3 I think that it would be more than enough to smooth out the snappy low end feel. It’s just so damn lean from the factory. Anyway, good luck. Be safe and keep on rockin the Sumo!
@@willysm1505 Thanks for the advice! I'll try a jet kit before doing the 3x3 as you suggested, in the meantime i alredy riser the stock needle a notch (3° grove from the top, was in second stock) all the exhaust backfiring is gone now, wich is alredy a great improovment, got rid of the k&n filter that was installed and got a nice twin air foam filter, that smoothed out quite a bit the ride and the bike didnt stalled with throttle blips. Thanks! Ride safe too, and for now i'm quite enjoying the sumo, wild and different world from the sbks, especialy performance wise, but a lot more funny!
Great video. I like the way you did the before and after scientific method. My DRZ400S is stock performance. I have instantaneous throttle response with a quiet stock exhaust. I improved the idle and low end (slow riding) performance by simply turning up the idle slightly. Now when I start the bike, it idles fast enough to run on its own without the constant throttle monitoring, and no jerking at slow speeds. I strongly suggest starting with the idle before making any irreversible 3x3 mods or jetting. I watch so many videos where people screw up there DRZ400 by messing with the performance that was originally set up correctly on a dyno from the factory. Once you mess up the performance on your DRZ400, you may never get it right again. Maybe I just got lucky, because my DRZ400 runs perfect from the factory - plenty of power, quiet exhaust, and instantaneous throttle response.
Tanks for sharing your experience. Be aware tho that even if you dont have To monitorize the idle by bliping the throttle anymore you just putted a plaster on the bigger problem wich is lean fuel mixture. To get the same result as I you wouldnt have To cut the box but only rejet the carb.
This story of how cold blooded the DRz400 is an old one that's been answered many times in many different...... Ummm languages & ways. You've got your own style of video/voice & delivery that no doubt will appeal to lots of people & that is good for you. Searching for the right words so that viewers hear/understand what you're saying is paramount to this channel doing what you'd like=growth thru biker wisdom for the DRz400. I'm here to search for those pearls of wisdom that each person might develop as useful. I'm looking at Dual Sport bikes & this is a top contender for me. So I'm here listening for all sorts of stuff in your words & experiences. Good so far.... peace & GB ALL
It was a first try at video making. I'm french so my channel focus more on a french speaking audience. I don't know if I'll ever do an other english video again.
As you might know, us dumb American's love hearing European accents & I thought your video has a style all its own which is good as well. I'll be back to see ya again b/c I am looking at a Dual Sport of this bike. Been looking at the Super Moto model as well but I've got 2 other bikes I'm seriously looking into. Thanks for your time/post!
Had mine for 5yrs now. I never pulled a wheelie. Just never found the need. It's jetted,3by3,and aftermarket exhaust. I went for a new plug, store didn't have my exact number. He said that has one that is a shade hotter. Now it doesn't take time to warm up. Thanks for your video
Thank you for the video, quite informative. Just bought DRZ400SM as my first bike and wondered if this is normal or not (starting up and choppiness). Interesting if cutting an airbox w/o aftermarket exaust does anything.
If you put a less restrictive exhaust and cut in the airbox you HAVE to re-jet the carburettor. If you only cut a hole in the airbox you HAVE to re-jet the carburettor. If you only put an exhaust you HAVE to re-jet the carburettor! To be quite honnest.... Even in stock form you SHOULD re-jet the carburettor. IT come from the factory too lean. As far as does it Do anything... Its kind of subtile but you will feel it. Thanks for the comment its very appreciated 😁 Stay safe my friend and enjoy this pretty cool bike!
I think you are french canadian right (like me :) ). I recognize the accent and the crapie roads and vegetation lol. Very good clip. Was really informative. I read mostly everywhere that the mod really shine when you mix it with a new exhaust system and a jet injection. I rode motorcycle all my life and just got the DRZ. After the break in (I will give it a 1000 km or so), I will do the 3 of them together at the same time. Again good clip buddy!
Effectivement.
As tu encore ton 400? Je pense ton dernier clip est un 350.
Great explanation and love the sense of humor. I bought my DRZ new and noticed the jerkiness in 1st gear off idle. It's so bad that it can be dangerous. What doesnt make sense to me is this... You say that it cones too lean from the factory, right? But backfiring only happens when too much gas makes it past the carb and into the exhaust. I have been thinking that my bike is running too rich from the factory, not too lean. Am I missing something? Thanks! I bought the JD jet kit and am about to do the 3x3 mod.
I'm not sure they are really call backfire in lean conditions. I just called them backfire cause its pretty much always refer as such. I think they are more popping under deceleration. No fire. I'm no mechanic and I really don't understand everything that is happening at this level. It went away after the bigger jet were installed. I know that much. Lol.
@@willysm1505 I did a little research and it appears that if there is too much air, (running too lean), the fuel can't be burnt properly, some of it escapes the combustion chamber, the exhaust manifold heats up too much, and unused gas gets burnt. That still doesn't make sense to me - how could the fuel not be burnt if it's too lean? Oh well.
Of course, the bike come stock already border line lean. If anybody wants to do the 3x3 hole its mandatory to re-jet the carburettor according to the modification. Its showned in this video too.
@@willysm1505 thanks for the quick reply, I just bought the bike used and noticed the 3x3 mod was done to it but the previous owner didn’t do it the owner before him did. So not sure if the rejet was ever done. Easiest way to tell if it was?
@@jake2772 if you need to put the choke on to start it at 20 celsius and up thats a bad sign. If it pop or back fire when you decel its another sign. If the fan of your radiator start often its sign that the bike run very hot and it could be because of lean jetting. Anyway there is a lot of sign of lean jetting but the BEST way to be sure... open the carb and check lol. Its not that hard. A garage could possibly do the job in less than a hour too.
Depends. In raw power... 0.5 % I would say. In throttle response 5% base on my feeling. Its not a magic trick. But if you pair it with a pipe, a better flowing air filter etc... you will feel it.
Sure haha I''ll take it 🤣🤣 I mean it was my first video ever, not in my first language without any "good" equipements or technic... The Room sound like a good comparaison 🤣
It could depend on your environement. Here up north temperature are low even when they are high for us hehe. Then the elevation could make a difference too. Finally, I don't know where you from but in different country they may not have the same jetting. Beside that, DRZ are notoriously lean from the factory but you maybe got one with the best specs out of the production. I'm glad to know that you have a smooth operating bike and its cool to know that not everyone has jetting trouble. Have fun, you have a cool bike in your hands. Ride safe.
In theory, in a straight line, top end power is acheive by the highest air fuel mixture that you can have. So this is why in drag quad or bike the airbox is deleted "completly". In fact to get as much air as you can, some restriction could be usefull so there is no turbulence around the filter as the speed of the machine increase. Its a science. About the 3x3 mod, first its an aproximation of what works good, is enough protection for water intrusion, its simple to calculate etc. Its most certainly not the BEST and or the worst its just a reliable guestimate of the DRZ crowd. If you did a 4x4 cut than it would be harder for you to ask another DRZ owner a working setup since there is far less data on this mod. With the existing stock air box if you do the 3x3 and jet the carb as recommended by a lot of people you are on a reliable path for good result with pretty much a garanty that you won't brake anything. Sorry for my english. Its not my first language.
Sure. You leaned out the bike too much. You need to rejet the carb after. If you look on drz400 forum for 3x3mod you will get a good idea how to rejet your carburetor
@@willysm1505 I'm good.if it ain't broke don't fix it.if Yoshi thought it needed more air they would have put a hole in the box to start with and I'm pretty sure they know more about the drz than I do.if I want to go fast I have a truck for that.
@@billbonu1639 yhea... its not exactly that they don't know that their airbox are too restrictive. The best proof of that is that on the drz400E the airbox is already unristricted from the factory. For the S and the SM to be road legal they had to muffled it for emissions tests etc.
Just got my bike jetted (JD Jet kit), full Yoshimura exhaust and 3x3… holy cow the bike runs SOOO much better. No more low rpm/speed lugging, pulls hard in higher rpms, accelerates better across the entire rpm range, no more having to give some throttle to start or choke in warm weather. No more stalls!! Bike runs 1000x better. These mods really are mandatory to allow the bike to run properly.
3x3 mods... Do they even worth the trouble? Would it be better? I mean, its pretty obvious english is not m'y first langage. How would you title it if it were your video?
It depends on what temperature but if you were running stock jetting all year long than... it will be better than stock. I would be shock if it's not working even when there is snow outstide.
