Hello everyone! I finally made the choice to purchase a 9.8hp outboard, and honestly, this will probably be the biggest outboard I'll ever own. I really like portable and lightweight outboards like my 6hp Tohatsu, but recently I've started doing outings with other fellow inflatable boat enthusiasts from Facebook and RU-vid and most of them have powerful outboards and I was being left behind. Now with this motor, I'll be able to keep up with ease.

Fun to watch. You actually did yourself a favor by flooding it because when you put oil in the first time OR when you change oil, you are supposed to remove the stop switch and crank the motor ten times so the oil has a chance to disburse. Have a good one!

I was looking forward to this review, as I plan to get one for myself (to replace my Tohatsu 6 HP and upgrade to a slightly bigger inflatable). TY! Regarding the difference in weight between 9.8 HP and 9.9 HP, it's because they're very different engines, not because of the accessories... The four stroke 9.8 HP is a two cylinder 209 cc, while the four stroke 9.9 HP is a two cylinder 333 cc. The 9.9 HP has the same engine with 20 HP . If you look at the specifications, the 9.8 HP weighs 81.5 lbs (just like the 8 HP and the 6 HP - because they all have the same 209 cc engine). The 9.9 HP weighs 94.8 lbs -- exactly the same as 20 HP and 15 HP, as they all have the same two cylinder 333 cc engine... (So the Tohatsu four stroke 9.8 HP and the 20 HP have the best weight to power ratio!)

The 9.9 is efi also, can be upgraded to 20hp with computer change. The 9.8 is still using the carb both are good motors the efi will need a computer to troubleshoot if any issue comes up the 9.8 is pretty simple to fix repair yourself

I know royal purple is a very good synthetic oil, but during break-in it's recommend to use regular non synthetic oil. Synthetic is actually too slick to seat the rings properly. It might be ok, it just always recommend to use non synthetic during break-in. After the break-in go to synthetic. If it was me I would switch it. It's not that much oil anyway.

... I have a dilemma whether to buy a Tohatsu 9.8 or a Mercury 9.9 engine, I know it's the same design, only the equipment is different, I have both engines at the same price, which would you choose and why?
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 7 месяцев назад
I say Tohatsu since it has a less fancy design and it is a few pounds lighter. Or you could do what I did, I bought a Hangkai 12hp 2-stroke that has the same power, but the weight of my 6hp Tohatsu "60" pounds.
@ErickMartinSucre

@@ErickMartinSucre thanks for your quick reply. Will the Saturn SK385XL get on a plane with 6 hp outboard and two adults?
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 2 года назад
@@vanseelife493 It could be if you downgrade the propeller to a lower pitch, one that will allow the engine to rev high and quick. Here is an example, I had a hard time making the BB290 plane with 2 ppl in it, but using a lower pitch on my 6hp, I was able to plane. The original prop for my 6hp was a 7.8x8, so I downgraded to a 7.8x7 and that did the trick.

Thank you all. I ordered a carb for a 20hp merc and prop also. If this is correct, and its the 300+cc engine, it should accept the carb and like it. I will find out the beginning of the week when I swap the carb and Prop.
