#CoupleCarComparison
This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2023 Honda CR-V hybrid versus the 2023 Toyota RAV4 hybrid compact SUVs. The Honda CR-V hybrid has a 2L 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine with Honda’s new 4th generation hybrid system featuring a pair of electric motors. It’s matched to an E-CVT and has a combined 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD in Canada, FWD and AWD options are available in the US. You get about 835 km/519 miles to every fill. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has a 2.5L 4-cylinder matched to an ECVT with Toyota’s hybrid synergy drive; it produces 219 combined horsepower, standard AWD. You get about 933 km/580 miles toe very fill. The interior of the CR-V is modern, open, and quieter than the outgoing model. This new Honda CR-V hybrid has the most cabin and cargo space in CR-V history. The new seats are very comfortable and are designed to reduce fatigue over long drives. The CR-V interior gets the same design elements as the new Civic, it’s simple and uncluttered with soft materials and some hard plastic. The striking honeycomb mesh accent that stretches across the dash from door to door hiding the air vents is a unique interior feature. In Canada, since there is just one trim, it’s comes loaded with a 9” touchscreen with Navigation, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 7” driver display, a wireless charger, 12-speaker Bose sound system, heated steering wheel, power front seats, driver seat memory, heated front and rear seats, leather trimmed seating with orange accents, a moonroof and a hands-free power tailgate. In the US, there are two trims, the base trim has the smaller 7” touchscreen, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a power driver’s seat, cloth seats with orange stitching, heated front seats and a moonroof. You can add a heating steering wheel for $460 USD to this trim and a wireless charger for $350 USD. The top Sport Touring: comes loaded with all the same standard features Canadian’s get on the top Touring trim. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid offers a practical and versatile interior with plenty of storage in the door pockets and at the centre console. It comes standard with an 8” touchscreen, available 10.5” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and heated front cloth seats. One up from the base model is a great trim to choose, the XLE comes with a power tailgate, a moonroof, 8-way power driver’s seat and a heated steering. In the US, you can add packages to this trim between almost $1,000 to just over $2,000 which includes features like heated front seats, heated steering wheel, moonroof, a power tailgate and the JBL sound system. Other available features on higher trims in both Canada and the US include, a wireless charger, Softex upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, power passenger seat, a 12.3” digital driver display and a bird’s eye view camera. Features the CR-V hybrid is missing that the RAV4 Hybrid has available are ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof available in the US and a 360 camera.

Just purchased a 2023 CRV Hybrid Sport AWD and I'm in love with it. I previously owned a 2016 RAV4 and was looking to upgrade to something newer/more fuel efficient. I went to the Toyota dealerships and was told the RAV4 Hybrids are on a 1-2 year waiting list depending on what model you want and if you want a Prime on my island of Oahu/Hawaii. So I started researching comparable Hybrids and ended up going with the CRV. It doesn't have the power and superb fuel efficiency of a RAV but it looks a lot nicer/ features a more premium interior and drives smooth as butter. Although I'm sure the RAV4 hybrid is a great vehicle, I'm very happy that I ended up going with the Honda.

You guys were a major contributor to my decision. Thank you. We are looking for our hybrid to arrive in about 6 to 8 weeks. My choice?? For looks and the extras I liked the Sportage. The Tucson not without consideration. But I went with the Rav4. The less exciting systems with years of track record made the decision. Thank you for your contribution and even with our decision made I continue to follow the channel and enjoy the coffee and cars.

On paper the RAV4 looks like the best choice. But when you get behind the wheel and spend anytime trying to enjoy the drive or listening to music you will quickly realize the CRV is a much better choice. It has a plush, smooth, quiet ride. And even the base model sound system is NOTICBLY better than most of the audio choices on the RAV4. I test drove both back to back to back to back (jumped back and forth between the vehicles multiple times.) Every time I got into the CRV I realized a new thing that the CRV does better than the RAV4. If you want to enjoy your drive, get the CRV. If you need a beater point A to B, Crotch goblin hauler, get the RAV4. Granted, I am in the USA and after dealer markups Toyota is gouging us, but Honda comes in cheaper for an equally equipped vehicle.

Thank you so much for your review. I have been struggling with my decision between the two because it’s a big purchase for me. I’ve decided on the CRV EXL, I really want the Hybrid but not in my budget. Honda is more expensive because there is more attention to fit and finish as well as the smooth even performance over hills, bumps and pot holes and that seals the deal. Toyota has a really annoying “rock” when it rolls over uneven roads. And this “rock” happens in the RAV4 to Toyota wheelchair van to the Lexus. With the exception of Lexus, Toyota’s look and feel like cheap plastic, IMO. Honda lacks certain desired features and the Touring is missing a spare tire but it feels great to drive. Honda should have offered more trims and more features but the comfortable smooth ride and classy exterior and interior makes up for it.

On paper the RAV4 has many things to like, but to me the CR-V is so much bigger - it's not even in the same league. The ride and interior quality and looks are so much better in my opinion also. What I've found after years of buying big ticket items - no matter how many comparisons you do, you tend to rationalize the one you really want anyway. I've owned Hondas and Toyotas and over the long run Hondas were much more reliable. I am bothered that there is no spare tire in the crv.

I had both of these out for a test drive and the CRV Hybrid won me over after the test drives. The ride was better and handling just felt right. It also has a higher quality interior and just felt so much more refined. The 2024 CRV Hybrid I took out was the EX-L new for 2024 in Canada and less expensive than the touring. I would give up mile or two mpg with the CRV hybrid than listen to louder cabin and CVT/ engine drone. I am not a previous owner of either brand.

The CRV Hybrid is great vehicle on its own, it's just the RAV4 Hybrid has so many more reasons to choose it instead. Aside from a bit more power (which I'm sure isn't a big deal to shoppers in this segment), it gets better fuel economy, has a trim in Canada available for about $15,000 less expensive (if you don't want all the toys) and even if you do want the fully loaded model, it's still about $3,000 less and has more features. Factor in a hybrid system is almost 25 years old (with refinements) and you've got a vehicle that should be as reliable as an anvil. Toyota's decision to offer hybrid models throughout their lineup (many models and trims) was the best idea from a car brand.

The problem with the RAV4 Hybrid is the lack of space. I’m 6’5 and cannot fit in it. I fit perfectly in the CRV Hybrid. And in the US, the prices of the RAV4 Hybrid XSE and CRV Hybrid Sport Touring are MUCH closer to each other and in many cases the CRV Hybrid is cheaper. Yes I love Toyota’s Hybrid history and their reputation, but I’d rather put my money on something with more space.

The CR-V has direct only fuel injection, so it will get carbon buildup on the inlet valves. Toyota's eCVT has been around since 2000. There are plenty of Prius taxis around with 500,000 miles on this transmission. There are no clutches to wear, no valves to jam unlike the Honda, which incidentally has a new and untried system. The AWD on the RAV4 uses a separate rear electric motor. The CR-V uses a transfer case, prop shaft and rear differential which requires more maintenance and is heavier. If you plan to keep a car for 200,000 miles, the Toyota will be the better bet.

Having a spare tire wins. I've had several flats in my Honda Accord Hybrid, and I can tell you that the tire repair kit is just a useful as a big rock in my trunk. The only way to reliably get anywhere with any car is a spare tire and for that, the RAV4 wins!

Driving a RAV4 for eight months gave me no impression of quality or longevity. Sharp edges on touch points (shifter and door), and rattles in several different locations including door speakers. The worst part is how little space there is for taller drivers.Even my old Golf embarrassed the RAV4 in that regard. I don’t have a lot of positives to say other than decent ride quality. I would take the CR-V or Sportage Hybrids over it any day.

Honda says it’s a natural process that is NOT covered by the 8-year hybrid battery warranty. I’ve lost 25% fuel economy. Honda costumer service was not helpful. In my understanding, a hybrid vs a non-hybrid car is the regeneration hence saving. The cost is additional cost for the technology, the battery, the efficiency of the hybrid system. To catpure the regenerated power, it doesn't need a big battery to store it, does it? I am considering a hybrid so your insight will be very helpful. Thanks!
@Dobr3967

@@ckryung Since the hybrid battery is deteriorating earlier than expected, it 1) can’t charge as efficiently, so it doesn’t capture the same amount of energy as before, and 2) is unable to store as much electricity as it once did. That’s why mpg/fuel economy has dropped.

I really wanted to like the RAV4 because the 360 camera, fuel efficiency and panoramic roof but really liked the way the CRV drove better. I also liked the CRV exterior a bit better but the inside sold me. It felt comfortable. The CRV is actually cheaper in the US (Touring vs Limited) but Toyota care is extended as well as My Toyota so that along with the fuel efficiency, it may be a wash. But I still got the vehicle I will enjoy driving and we work remote more these days so not too much commuting. I would have even picked a new Camry Hybrid over the RAV 4 or the Venza which had a smooth ride but its limited price was more than I was willing to pay.

I was always a Honda fan until they went to the tiny engines so glad to see it is back up there (2L vs 2.5L Rav) I had a Very crappy experience with Sub(standard)aru Forester & would never touch "them" again. I now have the Rav hybrid and will take it to the end (10+ yr?) Many people dont know the other big advantage of hybrids + a big disadvantage --- the electric takes the strain off the engine / drivetrain with potential cost savings / longevity But, you cant rust proof them & a big issue in salty Canada. Cheers to all in the New Yr!!

Just bought my 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid Sport (non touring) yesterday in the USA - wow what a car! Total OTD was about $42,000 USD. I like the RAV-4 too but the Honda is more refined. So the non-touring version is a better comparison to the RAV-4 in the video above and at that price point the Honda offers more. Just an observation. Both are fantastic cars. Thanks for this video, it helped me make up my mind on buying the Honda! P.S. Andrea is cute!

So here in the US, it looks like you can get a top spec, CRV hybrid sport touring, and a nicely equipped RAV4 hybrid XLe premium with some extra packages, for almost the exact same price. The cars would be equipped very similarly at those trim levels. so my question to Zack and Andrea is, if you were living in the US where the price differential did not exist and liked the more highly equipped models, would you go for the CRV?

You guys hinted at some of this, but how is the power delivery for both? The RAV4 seems like it should have more get up and go, but Toyota’s hybrids are notorious for being mpg biased and very sluggish (absent the RAV4 Prime which I owned), so I’m guessing it’s the same with this one. How is the CRV in comparison as that hybrid is fairly new. Their last one was very sluggish.

Happy holiday. Although RAV4 has an inferior interior quality, its still the compact hybrid SUV of choice because of Toyota's commitment to hybrid technology for over 2 decades. Its also more affordable with an entry-level model. Honda has missed the mark by offering CR-V, and soon Accord, hybrid, as an upmarket trim. There are aplenty of customers who only need a LX or EX.
