I hate that this is true. Everytime I get a rental I love how convenient it is. They think of everything. The Odyssey is amazing too. But getting a minivan is admitting defeat. edit: for those bizarrely triggered by this and feel they have to assert their big pps and confidence in their minivan--that's great for you, I'm glad. To clarify though I would never buy a crossover as they make no sense on any level. I'd say get a real SUV instead or a wagon/hatchback. And please guys work on your sense of humor.

I fitted 26 sheets of drywall into my Pacifica for my basement remodel, with the door closed. Now, I was way too close to the steering wheel to be safe, but it did it (and I checked all the weight capacities for the vehicle and yes, 26 sheets was within the weight limit for the van).

We are experiencing the "minivan circle of life". Had a minivan when the kids were small, went to performance sedans, SUV's as the kids grew and left, etc. Now, we're empty-nesters, complete with cataract surgeries and knee replacements. It turns out the minivan is again perfect for us, the ride height and entry/exit is great for our knees, room to pack for visiting grandkids 2500 miles away, etc. Who knew?

I hear ya. My main hobby is an odd one - archaeo-astronomy. I head out to ancestral ruins in the desert southwest, reconnoiter the area around the ruin, use software to replicate the night sky as it was in peak occupation periods for the site, and look for correlations (called alignments) between architectural and artistic points of interest and celestial (usually solar system) events such as "Where doe the sun rise relative to a feature on the summer solstice?" I've been using a 4WD full sized pickup with a shell for getting to trailheads (up to a 1200 mile drive from home) to these sites for the last 9 years. Figure my normal trip involves 1000 miles on pavement each way, and maybe 50-100 miles on unpaved roads and fairly easy trails. The poor on-road experience, extreme fuel consumption of the V8, massive turning radius and huge footprint (crew cab model) make suburban use painful and urban use perilous. It has finally irritated me to the point where I'm considering alternatives. This Sienna might be a viable alternative. With the shell and the rear seats folded flat in the cab, I have about 90 cubic feet of cargo space. The Sienna even with the unremovable rears seats is better on space, better on the highway, much better in the range per tank and mpg department, and has AWD available. If it can handle moderate dirt roads, it's would make the long parts of such trips much better. My concerns are less ground clearance, lousy approach angle, no undercarriage protection, no available durable multi-ply (LT) tires for the stock wheels, and getting beat up by ranchers while being laughed at for driving a minivan in cowboy country. Bruises heal.

Glad that works out. I had a 4 door sedan in college, then a compact suv. I think I'll prob have more than 3 kids in my life so I'm deciding between a larger suv or minivan. If it were up to me I'd stop at 3 kids, cuz most vehicles can keep 5 occupants but life has me with 3 god kids and more than likely my own kids too. So im buying a larger suv to transport them around. The toyo highlander and the sienna seem like good vehicles but still conparing right now.

I want to say thank you very much for this video. We are expecting our second child in the fall of this year, and am a lifelong SUV owner. Trying to be a "cool" millennial dad has caused me a tone of inconvenience with our current SUV, but I never really considered buying a minivan.......until I watched this video. Watching your video helped me clear my head and make a sane decision. Your comment about "not fighting with your car" really spoke to me, as that is ALL I was doing with my SUV. As a result, we added "minivans" to our list of cars to look at. We test drove an Odyssey, Q7, X7, Telluride, Pacifica, Pallisade, Land Cruiser (*for no good reason) and then a Highlander/Sienna (back to back). We ended up buying a 2021 Toyota Sienna XSE and it has been the most convenient car I've ever owned. This car caters to my day-to-day needs/life so well that its hard to imagine I will go back to an SUV. I'm less stressed when I drive, my fuel bill basically doesn't exist anymore, and I feel kind of smug when taking my son to daycare; I see the other parents my age STRUGGLING to get their kids out of their Outback's, Q5's and Range Rover's (etc), but simply wont buy a minivan because they cant handle the stigma or god forbid it might snow and they need a huge offroader to manage the crazy back-road conditions of a downtown urban environment. Anyways, thanks again, this was genuine consumer advise that resulted in a sale. I'm a lifetime subscriber now. Keep up the good work.

Mr. Geese, as a professional taxi/liverly/uber/lyft driver I have to say you missed the mark on the V6 vs hybrid argument. Hybrid drivetrains are ideal for taxi/city use and taxi drivers have already been getting 300-500k out of Prius drivetrains for many years. The fuel savings of a hybrid drivetrain in professional taxi use is massive and I expect this hybrid Sienna to become extremely popular with all livery drivers. The new hybrid Sienna rated at 36 mpg city vs 19 mpg city in the v6 Sienna translates to a savings of $18,600 over a lifetime of 300k city driven taxi miles at a cost of $2.50/gal. Toyota hybrid batteries are known to last 200-300k miles and can be replaced for $1-2k with a refurbished unit or $4k for a brand new unit. Meaning that even in the worst case scenario your fuel savings are 2-3x the cost of battery replacement if not 5-10x in a more optimistic scenario. As for the rest of the drivetrain, Toyota's hybrid transmissions last 500k miles as they are built from a solid planetary gear system, not a belt driven CVT, and the 4 cylinder engine can also last 500k miles, especially in a hybrid application which results in the ICE being used much less than a standard vehicle. Thank you for your content! You have the best car reviews on RU-vid and I just wanted to contribute my knowledge to the discussion of this vehicle and technology.

First, I totally agree with you're statement that most peoples problems with minivans is in their heads. They don't want to seen driving a "mommy" mobile. I've owned two minivans in my life and I don't have kids. I simply found them to be totally practical in terms of utility, the ability of carry lots of people and/or stuff with very little fuss. Some friends of mine and I used to take annual ski trips. One of the trips, there were five adults and one child packed up with skis and luggage for a seven day trip. We had no problems at all packing everything into a 2001 Honda Odyssey. We had reserved a minivan at our destination and on arrival, they didn't have one and tried to give us a Chevy Suburban. It wasn't even a contest. We didn't even get half of our luggage in the SUV and it was obvious that there wasn't going to be room for half of us to sit. For me and those like me, there's no contest between a full size SUV and a minivan. The minivan is far superior from a utility point of view and gets noticeably better fuel economy even before the hybridization. In my opinion, the only time that changes is if the owner has the need to tow a trailer of significant size. That's the one area that large SUV's will have the advantage.

You're not going to be driving off road an need an SUV. (although the ads on tv make you think you'll be ready if the back woods come calling) Perhaps Toyota should run tv ads where there's a bunch of screaming small kids, and the frustrated parents that can't get them in/out of the SUV. Perhaps even split screen, screaming kids/SUV on the left.....Sienna on the right...getting the kids out in 1/3 the time. I bet that, in the end, would sell more cars.

Mr Goose I really appreciated this video. We just bought a 21 Sienna LE AWD this last weekend and have absolutely fell in love with it. We looked at three row SUVs and the van not only was cheaper but also has so much more space and god damn it's comfortable in every row as a 6' adult. I'm absolutely enamored with the hybrid tech and watched a couple Weber Auto videos (one of which I came across you on in the comments) to fully understand how it all works. I was giddy with excitement as you talked about everything you loved about it that is also what we love about it. Thanks for an awesome video and I hope to see more of these on the road soon.

I bought one and absolutely love it. Like you said in your end, I came from a Nissan rogue (in euro spec) with 7 seats. I have four kids, and we were constantly fighting with the car. No space for stroller, for bags, kids complaining they have no leg space in back seats. Even the highlander we tested was too cramped. The sliding doors is amazing, and my 2 year old can press the button, open the door, cllimb in and sit himself down in his car seat all without any help from either my wife or me. At the end of the day, it's perfect for the family, and as any dad with kids under 8 will tell you, having kids happy in the car is pretty much the dream.

I really wanted a full-packaged top trim 2021 Sienna. But even the previous generation 2018 Sienna is phenomenal. My wife wanted an SUV. I didn't as much. But, with her testing driving it, sitting in every seat, and seeing how much space and comfort there was, even in the 3rd row, it was an easy decision. And with AWD as an option, it marked everything we needed with half the price. And the resale on these things will hold.

I bought a 2001 Sienna for $1400, years later, it's still going strong - Master 'Yota FTW. The Sienna is one of my favorite vehicles (along with the Pacifica) because of its sheer practicality. Real men don't have those insecurities about driving a "daddy mobile"; and function wins out on form everyday of the week. People are too caught up in superficialities, and can't get over their VANity. I've four daughters, and SUVs are simply a non-starter, including the Suburban. Any van is 100x more useful, but it's fun watching people with kids and dogs struggle with hatchbacks and SUVs, trying to ice-skate uphill. Thanks for a great video; there are many people in the market whose real life experiences are aligned with the Sienna rather than the Supra.

For fleet owners, most studies have found hybrids cost less to maintain. Yes, after 200k miles you probably will need a battery, but brake pads usually last 100k+ miles and rotors forever. Other than the Civic Hybrid and 3rd Gen Prius they have few mechanical failures either. Speaking of hybrids, the last generation Prius had a bridge so I find it very hard to believe it actually was a big deal to design like Toyota wants you to believe.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m working on saving up for a good down payment for one of these. I rented one for a road trip from NC to FL. It was the LE trim but it was still SO GOOD. If I can get one with the cloth seats and heaters then I’ll be a happy man. Space was great, interior design was excellent (very practical), and the mileage was amazing. We averaged 36mpg on the drive down to FL with 4 people, and the ENTIRE trunk filled with stuff. It was heavy. But still got 36mpg. We stayed overnight in Savannah, GA on the way home. From GA to home in NC I got 40MPG. Incredible. We hit bad traffic in SC, typical, and that’s where the hybrid powertrain got a chance to flex. I couldn’t believe we averaged 40MPG in a car that big, with as much stuff as we had packed. I’ve always been a van fan, SUV’s just don’t cut it when it comes to practicality. I think you hit the nail on the head, you don’t want to fight with your vehicle, and you won’t with a Sienna. Top shelf review as always, you guys are the BEST out there!

My wife and I just rolled 80k on our 2014 sienna limited awd. It’s been an awesome van. We don’t have kids but we do have two very large dogs ( a GP and a Anatolian Shepherd ) and parents with mobility issues, the minivan is tops for that, our older 4 runner can’t fit a third of the van and the cargo room is very flexible . . I’m not sure I would be happy with the new motor as Toyota’s V6 in ours is such a smooth and powerful motor. Literally the best part of the van. I feel like it’s just as powerful as the day we bought it and even smoother. It does 0-60 in around 7.5 seconds . They have done a good job on the new seats as the ones in mine weren’t that comfortable when they were new . Minivans are minivans and they will never be cool but this new design looks a bit busy to me .. the new interior is much better than mine in both ergos and comfort . I’m not sure I’m willing to give up the power of the V6 , it’s a great motor . Maybe if gas goes way up.. I don’t know though this thing is paid for and shows no signs of aging .

It’s taken them 15 years to get to this point. I think you have to factor that in, I would not be surprised if it takes them to 2056 to go all EV. They will need to shutdown every engine and assembly plant across the globe. It’s not just like they can modify the existing plants to build EV. The 4-cylinder engine is a real concern, they tried this in 2011 and they had no resale value. The engine belts snapped and the engines had to be replaced with 6-cylinders. Plus there was not much fuel efficiency benefit, only 1 MPG difference.
