2022 Toyota Sienna | Long Term Impressions 

I got "stuck" renting a minivan on a ski trip to Colorado. It turned out to be the best experience in a car I've ever had. Getting people in/out of it with their luggage; getting ski equipment in/out...the fuel economy, the ride... It was the perfect people hauler for the real world. If you haven't used one and you're turned off by a minivan, try one....it's just so much better than an SUV for the money.

The episodes with ordinary cars are the most EXCITING to me. Mark makes much sense and I do enjoy it. I wished he had access to minivans available in Japan. I wonder about his take on them.

Your comment about minivan drivers getting a pass is spot-on, and something I've noticed first-hand for years now, but never heard anyone else put it into words until now. As somebody who drove various turbo/V8 BMW/Audi/Lexus sedans before I had kids, I now find myself piloting a Honda Odyssey. The way people react to me if I do something stupid, is totally different in the van. It's like they're thinking "That poor schmuck must be barely holding it together with his 3.5 kids, dog, wife yelling at him, lack of sleep and 9 to 5 job. How could I be mad at him?"

Mid 30s MPG in a huge minivan that likely will be extremely reliable is an incredible accomplishment for Toyota. We still have an '08 Sienna with 170k and it still drives and shifts like new, but I am lucky to get 22-23 MPG and in today's economy that really does add up. Great review!

I have a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan with 222k on it. I have refreshed the suspension, rebuilt the steering, rebuilt and fixed all kinds of other little things that go wrong or break on a car with 222k miles on it and I absolutely adore it. It only gets 20Mpg at best, but it rides well, it's quiet (to me) and it's easy as hell to load and unload my two kids. Having a Sienna like this would be a dream, I can only imagine the difference 20-years makes in terms of refinement; to me, this would be a luxury car. Minivans are fantastic.

Have a 2021 platinum sienna. One of the best purchases my family has ever made next to my moms Prius prime. My dad has a 2019 Porsche cayenne s platinum and he said he enjoys both vehicles the same but for different reasons. Im 19 and it's awesome being able to carpool 6 of my friends around with everyone having their own volume controls, chargers, more than one cup holder, and lots of leg room. one of my friends has a boyfriend and he's 6'4 and said he sat comfortably in the third row and had enough headroom which was mind-blowing to me. Hoping Toyota makes a Lexus variant of the minivan. I'd buy that over anything when I have the means to buy my own PERSONAL vehicle haha

I am 1 year into owning a 2021 Sienna platinum. I agree with everything in your review, except I think the AWD system may be better than the credit you give it. We’ve got about 16,000 miles on our van and it’s been incredible. I drive it like I stole it because I also know how bulletproof this drivetrain is. Get one, you’ll be glad you did.

Whole heartedly agree with your review… Told myself I would never be caught in minivan as a car enthusiast. But I finally bit my own tongue last year with the purchase of new Sienna XSE. The best purchase ever!

Spot-on review. I put 4-5k miles on my 22 Sienna every month and I cannot fathom doing it in any other vehicle. The mileage being spot on with what Toyota claimed (34-36) is kind of a shock as so many other manufacturers get it completely bonkers-wrong.

I have owned my 2021 Sienna SE for over a year and have put almost 18k miles on it. 90% of those miles have been hauling ass (80+ mph) down Texas interstates and toll roads for my daily commute. It’s a way of life and part of my suburban culture. I’d have to say the vehicle is less than quiet at those speeds and the audio system is subpar but I’ve still managed 34.3 mpg despite my speed demon ways.

As a dad, minivan owner, and winner of the offspring collection game, this is the Savagegeese video I'm most excited for in recent memory.

As I get older I start to appreciate this type of car more and more.

Never been a minivan guy with the exception of family vacations when they were indispensable. Flash forward to today- I pulled up beside a Sienna in black with black alloy wheels and thought it looked stunning. At first I thought “What are you thinking man!” Your typical caustic (and appreciated) humor made room for a practical choice that gets me pondering again. Not sure how the wife is going to take it yet. If you lose me as a subscriber, just send flowers.

Bought the XSE model in January of 21’ it’s been a pleasure to drive, pure comfort ease of use. I have a hitch installed aftermarket by Curt for my bike rack. Awesome! I drive “normal” and use this van for my job as a vendor stopping at multiple stores a day as well as my daily driver. I’ve logged 36,000 miles, had a few trips to Florida from Texas, had zero problems! As of right now I’ve averaged 32.8 mpg over the last 6 months.

We’ve had our 2022 Sienna for a little over a year and 23,500 miles. We love it. We are getting 35.7 mpg which is pretty close to their advertised number. No other van comes close. It was a great choice for us.

This was such a refreshing/ cathartic review. Thank you for all your hard work.

Dad with 3 kids under 10 and I drive an Odyssey. 36 MPG is mind blowing. I'm currently getting 20 in the city, 27 on the highway. This will be my next vehicle, but I'd like to see Honda's next generation Odyssey before I pull the trigger.

That eCVT planetary transmission is one of the best in the market. It's incredible engineering.

I have driven/owned bmws and mini coopers. The driving experience is phenomenal. But as far as road trips extending 4 days to 2 weeks, i love my 2015 Sienna. It is high enough that i can get on fire roads and very light off road. Ultimate family car. 3 row SUVs are so cramped in the 3rd row. My kids love moving back and forth to different rows which helps alleviate their boredom. Driving for 6 hours straight per leg is so comfortable without any back or leg pains

Great video Mark! I actually purchased my 2021 Toyota XSE as a direct result of the initial review video you guys did. I was interested to see what your thoughts were, and ironically I have the exact same gripes that you brought up (I.e. those door panels are only good for gatorade bottles). That being said, it has to be the most relaxing vehicle I've ever owned - full stop. We just finished a 100+mile road trip for our holidays, and I was averaging 30mpg with the AC on full blast, through the mountains.....so it was nice surprise when I refueled on the other end. Great package, great car, happy dad.

I love this car. My parents traded their 2020 Odyssey for a 2022 Sienna to haul the grand kids. The Odyssey is great but only the ride quality and V6 is better. Everything else is Sienna hands down. I would trade my 2019 Pilot for one of these but my wife won’t allow it. These do get the mpg as advertised. Think of this as a Prius minivan. From 0-20 it’s pretty quick because it’s all electric. A Prime version would be next level.

Toyota should really make a Sienna Prime with the same powertrain from the RAV4 Prime. It would be nice to have 300 hp for road trips with hills and all electric driving for those local errands. Even if I only have 30 miles EV range that will allow me to do 80%+ of my drives in all electric. Plus, on road trips I don't need to worry about finding public chargers and waiting hours to charge.

Just bought my wife a new Odyssey rather than this. I preferred the Sienna for a few reasons with fuel economy being #1. We are also still driving a 13 year old V6 Odyssey that has given us zero drivetrain problems so there was still a lot of security in buying such a tried and true V6. We also did not like the folding seat mechanisms and a few other minor things in the Sienna. To be honest, I actually want one of each and might even get a Sienna when the old Odyssey finally dies.......if it ever does. You cannot beat a minivan for real life utility.

I know what you mean about maximizing fuel economy. I got my wife a 22 RAV4 hybrid and I like trying to stay in EV as much as possible, it's almost a game.

Thanks for creating another excellent video. We bought a new Sienna in 2005 for our young family which we still drive to this day. Our Sienna has 200km and has been bullet-proof. The Sienna makes an excellent family vehicle.

Never thought to compare an X7 to this van but you make great points. Almost 17 MPG's on a daily driver is bad. This might be your next vehicle

We got one in January in platinum which has the ventilated front seats. I don’t have a sweat or heat issue like you mention. Obviously we went for the top model, but it does bypass your issue while also giving you 360 camera, heads up display, heated second row and a few other things. I’m only averaging 33.4 mpg but I drive somewhat aggressively in Philly

I have two kids under two and live in a climate that gets regular snow in the winter. We bought a 2015 Sienna XLE AWD this year and the thing is AWESOME. It gets great economy for its size has enough power to feel comfortable passing and has insane utility. I fit 5 full sheets of plywood and 30 2x4 in the back with the second row removed. Best part? The wife loves it. Minivan is life.

It'd be cool if they brought back the Previa as a full EV minivan.

Absolutely agree with you concerning the grill. I grew up through the era of giant tail fins, horse collar grills, and massive extruded chrome. All these design fads, especially the tail fins rapidly fell off favor and the cars that had them could either be bought for pennies on a dollar or ended up in the crusher for scrap.

Great take on the Sienna, Mark. As a recent 2021 XLE owner, here's my two cents. I kept it over about 8 months and 5,500 miles but traded it in for a luxury car because it was lacking refinement like you talk about. Yes, the ride is great, near luxury like, but at least the XLE was loud on the highway (mostly wind/noise coming through windows). The Platinum has laminated glass and makes a big difference, but yes, stereo isn't great no matter which model you get. MPG: Averaged 32.6 over life of van but probably 80% of miles were highway. Around town putting around can easily get into the 40s, but don't expect 36 on the highway unless you go no more than 70 and are on flat ground not using the a/c (not kidding). MPGs drop to about 32-33 with a/c and going 75, even less if very hilly, don't expect great highway mileage. In the cold, going between 75-80 yielded a terrible 26 MPG. Sport mode does make it livelier/more responsive. But it cost nothing to try it, bought it for $40k new ($2.5k off sticker), Carvana gave $46.5k in trade and just for fun, a few months after dumping it, decided to run another trade in and it's up to over $52k, I almost fell over. If buy one, go with a new Platinum or Limited (assuming Limited has the laminated glass, could never figure that out) and try to get a little off of sticker, don't buy used as my XLE would not be worth anywhere near the $56k Carvana would charge for it, lol. But yes, if Lexus had a version, maybe with a 6 cyl hybrid, it would probably still be in the garage.

I love minivans and my Pacifica hybrid. We haven’t filled up the car in 3 mos and it’s our daily family hauler. It’s just so versatile. We previous had a Mercedes GL (bc my husband didn’t want an minivan), but w twins and grandparents, we couldnt fit anything in the suv. Once we got the minivan, my husband quickly appreciated its versatility. I just wish there will be an affordable ev minivan soon!

That's great that the storage tray can fit a small detergent bottle. But how many Tide pods can I get in there. I need my roadtrip snacks.

The wife and I are looking into new cars and this is on the top of my list. To say she was shock that 2 out 3 vehicles on my list are minivans would be a understatement.

Great video as usual! This may sound weird but I’ve been adding the music you guys have on your Car Play screens for years now to my favorites list and I have to ask…where do you guys find your music? I’ve discovered some great tunes from watching your videos.

There should be new category of quickness like 0-20mph, from launch without reving. Because in the cities where speeds limits are below 30mph and lots of stop ,start traffics, that is all that matters. Considering that I think Toyota hybrids aren't bad . They are pretty quick off the line.

We needed this video. Everytime I see Sienna content, it makes me think this is totally the right move for our family. We're on the Prime waitlist and hoping for one to deliver to us before the phase-out. It doesn't look good and most likely will switch our deposit to a 2023 Sienna allocation O_O

My husband and I just got the 2022 XLE and we love it so far! We have the red and we get so many positive comments on it. I am having twins in 5 days and we cannot wait to see how this does as a family car.

Amazing honest review! I loved it. Evey video on Sienna I saw were saying all these good stuff, but when you took that water bottle and tried to fit that in, that was it! I knew you were very practical and I could relate 100%, although I preordered one (probably will get it by 2025) I will get one that has those features tweaked in. Yes I still love the car, but its good to know.

Great review. We have the '22 AWD. The only real complaint I have about it that you already touched upon are the bad seats and AC system. It's really bad for summers, you're constantly sweating and there's not enough cold air circulation. But other than that, I can't really complain. The fact that Toyota made such a big vehicle with a hybrid AWD engine that gets 36mpg is incredible engineering. In all honestly, this generation of Siennas is one of, if not the most bang for your buck vehicles you can get.

Toyota makes a lot of luxury vans in Asia, they have lots of experience n the best in the world by far. The Noah, Alphard are hot sellers.

I grew up with a 2008 Toyota Sienna. The thing was so usable. It was a beast.

This video is testament to why Savage Geese is my absolute favorite go-to for car reviews... I am single, no kids, and yet was absolutely RIVETED. I am in no way, shape, or form in the market for a minivan; and yet now have a new appreciation for this class/brand/model vehicle.

Even at 18mpg vs 36mpg, with gas at $4/gal (I don't think gas will fall much lower again short of some catastrophic event), you save more than $1100 every 10k miles. Having to change a battery pack every 150k miles will still easily net more than $10k of savings (at the prices Mark mentioned)

One thought as the long term segments are fairly new: introduce us to the actual car a little more. What's its trim level? How much did it cost?

I was sold on my next vehicle being a minivan. Then I got sucked back into the SUV market again particularly looking at the new Honda Pilot. But I keep coming back to this minivan for all the reasons you mentioned and more like being able to sleep in it for camping trips and road trips. A minivan makes so much sense for daily driving which is what most people use their fancy suvs for anyways.

Always enjoy watching your contents. I find your reviews fair and honest. We placed an order for a XSE AWD (w/ Tech) in Canada last August, and we can't wait to get our new mini-van. It's almost a year, and we still don't know when the vehicle will arrive (the dealer told us it might not arrive until 2023).

A Lexus minivan would be so sick. Imagine if RV manufacturers can work their magic on a minivan. A mini adventure van.

Man. I almost got this minivan. I ultimately went with the Honda Odyssey. Where I live is mountainous terrain and I had my little Lexus CT200h and it was dangerously slow. Merging onto the highway was a daily Russian roulette. Had I still lived in flat Florida, 100% woulda gotten it.

I can’t disagree. I went from an X5 to an MDX and neither seem to give my wife and I what we really are looking for in a real utility vehicle. My wife doesn’t want a huge SUV, so honestly a minivan fits the bill.

I love driving around our 2015 AWD Sienna - as you said you basically become an braindead zombie NPC Car that folks do not rage at. They simply think you are a in a slow ass minivan and will move around you. Instead of being in traffic you BECOME the traffic. I love the ride height too - it really lets me see that the FBI and CIA are constantly monitoring my brainwaves from the fourth dimension because I emailed Rob Lowe pictures of my cat.

Mark and I are on the same page in that we wanted more "luxury" features on this redesigned Sienna. Having driven a 2014 Sienna Limited FWD with all options since new, I was appalled that the generation 4 Sienna Limited lost the rear sunroof, the power stowing and reclining 3rd row seats and most importantly the height adjustable headlights since the Sienna can sag badly when fully loaded blinding oncoming drivers and reducing visibility. What the Sienna needs is a standard rear air suspension to keep the vehicle level and its headlights on the road. I expected the new Platinum trim to be much nicer. Why doesn't it at least have a fully adjustable front passenger seat with height adjustment and lumbar support. And lets have power extendable seat cushions for both front seats and a seat position memory for the front passenger seat. Why doesn't the North American version of the gen 4 Sienna have available power adjustable middle row seats with power extending leg rests like the gen 4 Sienna assembled and sold in China? The Chinese version also retains the dual sunroofs. Other than the wonderfully spacious interior,, a great aspect of our Sienna has been its "stealth" aspect. I experienced an amazing amount of belligerent behavior from other drivers with some bordering on assault while sedately driving Mercedes and Lexus vehicles but there's been none of that while driving the Sienna. For that reason alone, I am reluctant to go back to driving recognizable "luxury" vehicles but there is no way I would buy a generation 4 Sienna in its current format. And that is from a TMC shareholder!

The “luxury” MPV seems to be a thing in Japan with vehicles like the Alphard, but I guess they don’t see a market for it in the US and they will be fine with that as long as they can keep selling so many “premium” SUVs as they do.

Great review as always. Really sad that minivans are dying. When I will have kids and if more than 2, I cannot imagine traveling in a wagon or an SUV with a lot of luggage.

Rented one. Loaded it with 6 adult humans, bags. Did a 400ml roundtrip on all mountain roads / highways and spent $35 on gas total. Made me a believer.

We have a 2015 sienna and it’s hands down one of the most utilitarian and useful vehicles you can buy even if you don’t have a family like me. Oh, and I’d they made a Lexus version of the sienna I would totally get it.

We owned our Sienna for 7 problem free years. Only had 75k miles on it. It ate rear brakes, which I was told by a Toyota tech is common. It was very loud inside, but the V6 made the car deceptively fast for what it was. Struggled to get anything over 22 mpg on the highway though. My family does miss its usability, it is way more functional than any other vehicle that works for families.

We bought one for our family. Battery draining issues had us tow it 3 times to the dealer. Software issues apparently and Toyota said they are aware of it. Just hit 9000 kms and we are trading it in on a Yukon diesel. Done with the minivans. Quality is not like the previous Toyota’s we have had.

Great review. I was expecting Mark not to like it. I hauled 4 x 8 sheets of plywood in my 2002 Honda Odyssey when not chauffeuring kids.

I am in the waitlist to get one of these. I have an XC90 and only two kids. It is a super comfortable SUV but yes I do feel the lack of space in it with the car seats and the amount of stuff we haul during trips. I test drove the Pacifica hybrid and Sienna was wow'd by the amount of space if offered. I can literally setup a bed in it if I wanted to. The gas mileage was another major factor too. I've always had the minivan stigma in me so making this shift is going to be interesting. While I stand in line for the Sienna I still keep wondering what I would do without my suv in the future 😅

I had a 2021 Sienna XSE (only sold it because I MADE $5k above what I paid and I am moving from Cali to Tennessee and cannot drive 2 cars as my wife cannot drive on highways.) and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! The BEST auto that I have ever owned UNTIL I just got the Kia Sportage Plug In Hybrid and it appears to me to be Equal to the Quality and features of the Sienna BUT I also get the Panoramic Roof that the Sienna did not have. The first 3,000 miles I got 36 to 38 miles and then I started getting 42 miles consistently (I did NOT use the digital indicators - I used the total miles driven and recorded that and then how many gallons to fill up!) and a few times I even got 45 mpg. I am ready to buy a Plug In Hybrid Sienna when that comes out - Great Van but I am very happy with the Sportage until then. The RAV4 Plug in Hybrid is impossible to find and WAY too UNNECESSARILY expensive! Toyota is too greedy there for sure!

This Sienna is the thing that we wait for a long time. Hybrid 35MPG in city and highway instead of 18/24 MPG. The 2.5L engine is really easy to maintain and share with many cars from Camry, RAV 4, Lexus ES, etc. We drive smooth and slower than typical cars, and getting 35-40 MPG is something that we want for a family hauler.

I’m going to miss the v6 version. #1 reason I’d take the Honda Odyssey over this one.
