Wish the races were a bit longer. Even though the convertible Mustang is almost 200 lbs heavier than the fastback, it felt like Mustang was picking up better acceleration towards top end.
Great video. If you could please do slow motion at the end when the races are close that would be great. Also, if you could add 0-60 & 1/4 mile times for each race, that would be nice. Thanks again for all of the great content.
A coupe with the drag racing mode would be a much closer comparison than a base convertible but, good stuff either way! These new supras are doing great things.
I'm Supra biased, my nephew has one , and I was surprised how quick it was when I drove it. They're really fun from a 30 roll. I know the vert is heavier, but the mustang wasn't launched properly in any of the runs. He clearly wasn't building power on the converter, or brake boosting , if you will. Especially during the sport Trac off dig.
@@Tone_Of_Dials 50k is a lot to be fair. Before I got started in my career I thought 30k was a lot for a car now I think anything under 80k is reasonable lmao.
@Catholic Firefighter In 10 years the 51 k base Supra will be worth, 40k, in 10 years the 40k based Mustang will be worth, 4K. Don’t believe me? Google 1998 Supra for sale, then google 1998 Ford mustang GT for sale and see what you come up with.
@@JV8901 I own a 450hp/480tq tuned Supra. You need big turbo, full bolt ons, port injection, fuel pump, and flex fuel to get that kind of power. Ideally you'd have a built transmission and upgraded axles also. That's an easy 9 second build with slicks.
Curb weight in the video may be off, but the mustang was definitely moving like a 4550lb car in this video lol. Should've been a close race even from a dig

The 10 speed in the ustang is very quick quicker than the other other car the one. With the identady crises how quick 11.80. 117. For the manual 6 speed. 12.5. 115. Truth hurts !
I have an 18 gt 6 speed, the automatics are faster no doubt about it, that's where our technology is today but I love controlling the gears myself instead of just slamming my foot down, I have done 3 mods so far and I can feel the hp difference for sure, plus I wasn't about to pay almost 4 grand more for an automatic lol.
It seems the Supra has shorter gearing than the Mustang. If you listen carefully when the Supra shirts to overdrive, you can hear how tall the last gear is.
@@amrridy7503 The weight that was shown at the beginning of the video is wrong, the Mustang is not 4500lbs, maybe 3800lbs, the Mustang should be making more power,, we don't know how much the Supra is really making, maybe 420hp, think the top 0to60 times are about 3.8 seconds for both, give or take a 1/10th, but this convertible is probably 200lbs heavier than a hard top GT.
@Catholic Firefighter base also has different gearing not great for top end anyways only better for 0-60. Base doesn't have the performance package or lighter tires which all the pp2 and pp1 is a must to really be competitive unless u yourself want to source out the options. The supra base and premium have all the performance options standard, you only get a better interior and few cosmetic touches so regardless the supra gives you all the real necessary options
It’s an even race if the mustang would have left together with the Supra from a roll. The 5.0 theoretically should pull on top with having more horsepower. And most definitely the curb weight of that stang is lower than 4000 even if it’s a convertible.
I don’t understand why folks are so shocked. We haven’t seen a fast mustang in forever! The GT needs cat delete and e85 tune just to be competitive with twin turbo v6’s
Why is it in a Sam video in August a Mustang GT is listed at 3800 lbs and in this video the same car is listed as 4550 lbs ? The 4500 lbs is closer to reality but points like this do make me second guess what is being reported
The Supra is a significantly more expensive car, but this isn’t its strength. It’s a canyon carver, weekend track car. I’m surprised it was even in the roll race. Personally I wouldn’t add any more power as it’s perfect with that set up. Fast enough for fun but u can still use all the power on a twisty road. Got my order. 3.0 premium w/ drivers assist in phantom…6 speed baby. Trading in my 16 civic lol. Wife said ok! 911 turbo(that will just be electric) at 65 or turbo Supra at 35. I’m taking the latter.

5 seat muscle car vs Deuce coup... The supra is about $8000 more than the Mustang gt. The Ford gt350 is around $4,000 more than the supra. That's probably a more comparable race. Also the Mustang has a generic engine that's everywhere the bmw b58 is a premium engine that only a few vehicles get

The BMW has the torque advantage with the turbo, Mustang is just simply the choice for people wanting a genuine N/A V8 experience. You need to rev it more to get the best out of it, more fun in the real world than Supra in my opinion (even though it's a BMW).

Mustang coupe makes about 415whp, and the Supra 390whp so they’re equal in hp to weight ratio, but the mustang has that naturally aspirated torque so I would probably have the mustang over the Supra

I'm no lover of Mustangs... but unless you had 3 fat people in the car with you there's no way it's heavy. This leads to the hp/lb being very wrong. 3825lbs and 460hp for the Mustang for 0.120 hp/lb. But we all know the Supra is horribly underrated. Stock they're putting down ~390whp while the Mustang is putting down ~400whp. Knowing that, this race was obvious...
0-60 for Mustang is 4.2 seconds for Supra it's 3.9. At the top end is where the extra horsepower and torque start to come into play and Mustang would win a 1/2 mile race. Mainly the difference is due to Mustang weight and possibly being a convertible.
Not all about the bigger engine, 70hp difference and supra weighs 200 lbs less, top end the mustang keeps going I have a 2018 gt 6speed and I was going 142mph in 5th gear and it still had plenty more power.
Seen alot of jumping by the supra. Even worse you put in manual to start the race in the proper gear then kick it in drive. Seriously wtf is up with the comvertible? Its heavier and not a true comparison. If you want to choose a mustang in the same price range then how come you dont pit it against a mach 1 with 480hp?

Curb weight on a convertible mustang GT is 3,825. Regular coupe is 3,700. Dunno where you got the 4,500lbs from, since that’s how much a Mach E weighs.
I don't get why companies underrated their hp number. Stock for stock supras are known to have 380hp to the wheels. Mustang is maybe around 15-20hp more but weighs more. Pp1 or pp2 mustang COUPE would've been a better race.
Funny you should say that. Just a few days ago the new Nissan Z was reviewed and raced with a supra and mach1 so go youtube it and watch it was a good race.
@@HarryTwatter dude it’s not. Yeah sure maybe it uses a BMW engine, but the reason it’s FASTER then the Z4M is because Toyota did some great modeling or added some stuff to the car. It’s also lighter, and the tcs system works better then the bmw. The only thing that is not Toyota in this supra, is the engine.

And I thought it was quick just like everybody else that owns these crappy slow American cars. I.e. Challengers, chargers, Camaros, mustangs. Until you pull up next to an RS3, A90, etc. Sorry to break it to ya… Most Americans cars are just slow and lack any emotion.
The way my 2018 gt mustang 6 speed is geared, I am at 2500 rpm in 6th gear at 90 mph if they removed the factory rev limit of 157 I know it would reach around 175 to 180, I have been at 142 mph in 5th and it still has so much power left.
If I’d be a ford manufacturer; i wud find it embarrassing that a six cylinder can even compete with my eight cylinder. It should be no match and should be crushed. But that is not the case.

how the fuck people keep saying Toyota supra like that is a bmw Z4 engine under the hood Toyota couldn't make the supra like the older one and they had to go bmw for the motor props to bmw for making this good engines
Dude the Supra kicked the Mustang's ass!! If American companies were as concerned with making crazy power on the engines as they were making an overall performing car that puts the power to the ground, this situation would have been far different. The Japanese realize that and thus are leaps and bounds ahead of us.
Kicked its ass is a stretch. This was a convertible non PP model and it still cost 10K less than the supra. I would day it did very well considering it was not the best model available. Both awesome cars.
