The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is well known for its reliability and low running costs. Now, the new model gets a sportier design, improved technology and is even cheaper to run thanks to an improved hybrid powertrain. But can it outclass rivals like the Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta and Honda Jazz? Carbuyer Editor Richard Ingram puts it to the test in our video review.

Great car but as per usual, too much emphasis on 0-60 times. My car is fast but when I join motorways etc, I dont need to floor it. I gradually get up to speed in my own time without holding anyone up. Why is the assumption that everyone needs to drive full throttle all the time ? This is why the roads are full of impatient bell ends with no self control and no ability to handle a cars power in a mature fashion.
@lapamful
@lapamful 3 года назад
Agreed in terms of the usual motoring journalist criteria. Everything has to have a record setting Nurburgring track time otherwise it's 'under powered'. But I disagree that the 0-60 time is unimportant. There are times when you need a bit of oomph. If you're stopped on the hard shoulder for whatever reason (police pulled you over etc) and you need to get back up to speed, you don't want to be hanging about if it's a busy road. Also there are places with dual carriageways where you need to cross them from a standstill and again, sometimes you want the car to give you that push and not hang about.
@kirbsmeister2
@kirbsmeister2 2 года назад
Agree with you although I find that having acceleration when you need it (changing to a faster lane when it's busy-ish, merging with a short slip lane) is handy, but even in my 70HP 2nd gen Yaris it's generally nothing that dropping a gear won't fix! Does seem odd that car journalists seem to think everyone is setting lap times in their hatchbacks!

The car excels around town and shorter journeys naturally. It really does what it sets out to do amazingly. I agree performance isn't what people ought to zone in on particularly. It still has plenty though, especially in the conditions its best suited for. The 0-30 is excellent and that's all you need. It's overall power figure is far from anaemic and when you consider the stellar fuel economy. It's one of the best B segment cars in its area vs the competition in my opinion.

Don't forget that with the hybrid you get the full Toyota Safety Sense System which includes Lane Trace Assist, Lane Departure Alert, Road Sign Assist, Pre-Collision System, and most importantly, the Full Range Adaptive Cruise Control, which works even in slow moving traffic. This is a big plus in my book, as more basic models do not have the entire suite, and other manufacturers offer fewer safety and assistance systems. The climate control as basic is also something that is seen only in the Peugeot 208, which costs around the same.

There's something really wrong with boot spaces still compared in liters; I know it is volume, but realistically, who fills the boot to the ceiling🙄? Boot AREA and regularity give a much better idea instead of counting those liters up in the air, which mostly VW cars exploit to make 'class leading' models. The Polo you mention is slowly vanishing because of how unreliable it has been the last 10-15 years...it's a shame to call that car 'class leading' .

It was a pleasant surprise driving it. It had more punch than I was expecting. Handling was agile and its off the line performance, 0-30 for example, made it feel punchier than expected. And ofc the kind of trips this car is suited for that fit perfectly. I had the fortune to drive this back to back with the GR version on a long drive around some of my favourite twisties. Night and day if course but the hybrid exceeded expectations for enjoyment considering what it's for. My complaint would be the weird and inconsistent half n half feel to the hybrid brakes and what felt like a pretty high center of gravity compared to some other B segment cars I've driven.

I really like the styling of this car and agree with the reviewer about being cramped in the back. The Clio and Polo are substantially larger cars so it was never going to be able to carry the same amount of luggage but it’s certainly as good if not better than the Mini (much pricier) so why not mention it. Price wise it is very close to the Jazz which is larger too and is my other potential choice.

The difference between the cars in this segment is the badge. The reason you buy a Toyota is for the build quality (not really the stuff you see, the important stuff). The only reason you buy a German car is for the badge.
@kristians2704
@kristians2704 3 года назад
that is so wrong. Mercedes, BMW, Audi clearly offer way more features, technology, better platforms with RWD, more powerful engines etc. Nobody cares about the badge but German cars are still better in every category aside from reliability.
@thewaywardgrape3838
@thewaywardgrape3838 3 года назад
@@kristians2704 'Better platforms' - Define better? Technology - You mean infotainment? BMW has the best, agree. Safety tech, not so much. Powerful engines - Really? Most people who commute to work don't need power. Nor will they use it in most countries. aside from reliability - You realise a car is essentially a tool; to do a job. Reliability is the most important factor for any tool. Bare in mind, I own a Yaris GR, Porsche 718 GT4 and a Jaguar F-Type SVO. My wife's 4 series BMW isn't particularly better than my son's Hyundai i40. In fact the interior on the BMW is worse in places! There's £17k between the two cars
@kristians2704
@kristians2704 3 года назад
@@thewaywardgrape3838 If we are talking about NEW cars (not used) then all cars are reliable for the first 6 years or so and that’s why reliability is almost never mentioned in new car reviews. Most people that get NEW cars will either lease or buy for 4-7 years and get rid of them. Better platforms I mean more solid and RWD platforms so better handling. German cars def DO have the nicest interiors (Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, Audi). The people who have to drive to work can still use the performance on a motorway where you can legaly do 70mph.
@thewaywardgrape3838
@thewaywardgrape3838 3 года назад
@@kristians2704 There's literally reports published every year, rating the reliability - average repair cost and repair frequency, reported by owners. RWD doesn't mean better handling. Handling is defined as driver & car interaction; how the car feels when you're using it. Pretty much all modern cars are dull to drive. They require very little steering input too. Like I said, my son's Hyundai is nicer and than the BMW. Infotainment wise, the Hyundai doesn't come close. Ultimately, it's the build quality of the cabin you should be concerned about. As for performance, let's be real. Modern cars don't struggle to do 100mph, the difference is how quickly it gets there. Being RWD doesn't mean anything either, that's just something people believe because reviewers say it so.
@kristians2704
@kristians2704 3 года назад
@@thewaywardgrape3838 Yeah I will agree that Hyundai/Kia are the only mainstream brands that are very close to premium brand in terms of interior but something like Toyota or Honda doesn’t come close to German cars when it comes to interior. Just a question for you, if money was no option which car would you rather drive for a year: 2021 BMW X5 or 2021 Lexus RX? I think we all can say that the BMW X5 would win.

We had witnessed that once before with Ginny's awkward camera angles. Consequently, we ended up watching reviews from the same channel as if they were coming from two different channels. The truth of the matter is that this presenter has chosen to carry over to Carbuyer filming techniques from the previous channel he was with, the name of which I cannot recall. @@carbuyer Years ago, Carbuyer introduced a new trend and paradigm on making car reviews. With Mat and Rebecca, Carbuyer managed to take the lead away from WhatCar. At some point, Mat decided to spread his wings to experience his creativity on his own channel. Not only did he keep up with the new paradigm but he succeeded in evolving and taking it several notches up the scale. Carbuyer, on the other hand, introduced us to Batch and Ginny. Batch received a controversial welcome whereas Ginny was never able to settle and relax in front of the camera. Even after years of being with Carbuyer, she couldn't keep a natural pace or stance in front of a car. They may not have taken it a step further, but they both remained on par with the new paradigm reviewing cars with the same passion, enthusiasm and commitment like we have come to expect from Carbuyer. You set the bar high. Don't expect us now to settle for anything lesser. We will be relentless!

Too repetitious and wooden. The use of multiple camera views is so passé, the man has a droning voice and knows very little about the car he is supposed to be reviewing. The CVT is not the ordinary type but Toyota improvement of the concept. Car Buyer bosses take note, this man might well be better in a different job.

@@drillerkiller9 Depend on what's important to you. For driving - Fiesta, Ibiza, Mazda 2 For space - Jazz, I20, Rio For classy interior - Polo, Fabia Decent boot - Jazz, Clio In the UK the biggest sellers rarely change - Fiesta, Corsa, Polo, Mini. Let get real here nobody wants automatic cars, this is not america. If toyota does not want to offer a 6 speed manual transmission normal gearbox in the through sense of the word, then the consumer should give them the heave-hoe or the two fingers in which ever order that's up to you. The same applies to all the rest of the car manufacturers out there that don't want to offer the option of both types. !

Calling this a self-charging hybrid is about as useful as saying it has self rotating wheels. It just means that Toyota either could not be bothered to make it a proper plug in hybrid or could not find enough space for a decent sized battery.
@confounded_feline
@confounded_feline Год назад
Describe it how you wish, I don't think it's inaccurate though. I'm sure you know it charges from recouping kinetic energy on the drive and via engine engagement when required. Hardly matters though when it's a solid hybrid drive train that does exactly what it sets out to do. It's frugal. 60-70mpg without much effort is no joke and it's more enjoyable to drive than any modern eco shitbox runaround has any call to be. Fantastic acceleration for its power figure from stand still and it's reasonably agile while also being comfortable. Ticks the boxes for the intended target audience
