@@JohnHoulgate It really isn't just the coach. You have to start with superior athletes and last year the Sahlman's and Young's provided 4 of the male athletes. Obviously some superior genetics in those families. The coaching provides the correct coaching and gets the athletes to buy in. At that point you will have a great team. Next year all the Sahlman's and Young's will be gone, then we will see how they do as a team.
@@davidzuk4894 Superior talent is one thing, but I think without Sean Brosnan, these guys would've been running low 9s at 3200 meters. Brosnan's now coaching at UCLA. After this year the Youngs and Aaron Sahlman are gone. The rest of the guys would win any CIF division, but probably not state. After that Newbury Park will fade. Give it three years.
@@JohnHoulgate I agree with your assesment. I ran 4:22 for the mile and 9:28 for the 2 mile in High School 1975 in kansas. These guys make you feel inadequate.
@@davidzuk4894 I'm Class of '76, Southern California. In my Freshman year in Track So Cal had three guys, two from Lompoc High, and another from North Torrance who were running the 2-mile under 9 minutes. There were about a half dozen others who were knocking on the door. One of them was a Freshman named Eric Hulst. By his Sophomore year Hulst was easily under 9 minutes consistently. It wasn't impossible, but most of the elites ran low 9s. That was an accepted standard. The Lompoc guys, Terry Williams and Jim Schenkel along with Barry Williams from North Torrance were clocking in the 8:40s. The Newbury Park guys not only got down to the low 8:30s, they pulled the top runners below the 9 minute barrier. At the Arcadia inviational last Spring, 23 guys broke 9 minutes. That's insane! Aaron Sahlman ran that race with 100 degree fever, managing 9:01. Feeling any better? This is something that doesn't come around very often. You ran some pretty good times. I never made it below 4:40 in the mile or below 10:00 in the 2-mile. And also, we ran on dirt tracks, not the rubber they've been running on the last 30+ years.
