2022 Acura TLX Type S | Glorified Accord? 

**Correction: Single Twin Scroll not Twin Turbo

I can tell that you watched other reviews because reviewers like to say that the track pad is so difficult to use. Meanwhile, those of us who own a new Acura know that after a couple of days the track pad system is very easy to use and no big deal. In fact, I personally like reaching down to a track pad instead of reaching up to a touch pad. Maybe that's just me?

One of my relative has one (Aspec), and it's pretty fun to drive, very smooth and refined. The isolation is great and the gauge cluster gives great old vibes while still having nice up to date touches. The curves of this car are amazing in real life. It's just gotten pretty expensive here in Canada.

WRONG: 9:25 mark. Not based on the Honda Accord. Entirely new platform built from the ground up with the Type S in mind. It is the first Acura Sedan to not share the Accord platform. It is shared with the RDX. Also the 10 speed auto has had so much removed and upgraded it's not really an "Accord" Transmission anymore. The base TLX would be the Accord transmission as would be the base Engine.

I'm a Type S owner. Loved the intro, nailed it. Push button might be great on a weekend car but frustrating on a daily. Tell the owner to get the skirts, this car needs the skirts, or at least get the white splash guards, which I got and never used lol. But it changes the car completely. Look at the PMC Type S, which has skirts. Your review is pretty much spot on. Interior issues and all. I bought this over a 340i, which was actually the same price when I got mine last year, and this year it costs even more. 64k now. Acura's finance rates were 4.25 vs 1.25! As for launching it you really need to do it right. traction off, trans in S, sport+, you must hold the brake and gas for at least 3 seconds to build boost, and even then the launch control is fussy. But get it right, you will know. From a stop, it's not quick enough, they need another 40 HP to make up for the weight. I don't like the infotainment AT ALL. A year now and I still hate it. The 360 camera is awful. The gauges while clean, and will never break, should be digital, and where is the HUD? But it's very comfortable to drive as a daily, seats better than a 340 for ME. Also, it's bad on gas. 340 is better on gas. Get the 340i if you can. I couldn't, I couldn't get the build I wanted, and live too far away from a dealership to chance getting the BMW. But I don't see a a Q50 in this styling at all, and I drove several before getting this. I also love the steering, preference I guess. I have yet to see another Type S on the road, and that is cool to be rare. Acura's marketing screwed themselves, this is not in the class they market it to be...S4, 340 etc. Its an in between with an identity crisis which is typical Acura. Is it sport? sorta but not really, is it luxury? not really...so what is it? It is a gorgeous from what people tell me...with the skirts.

0:30 - Saw this video when it was posted, and bought myself a TLX in the meantime. I wanted to say now that I like how the shifter buttons are all differently shaped. They're easy to use while also being hard to get wrong, if that makes sense. I wouldn't have wanted to get a car with identical buttons like the Lincoln you showed (or all the others that use a rotary knob) because they look too easy to choose the wrong gear. The last thing I'd want to do in a parking spot is choose Reverse when I want Drive.

I see it all the time. My friend's Tiger Eye Pearl. She loves it. Moved up from a WRX.

I’d love a Type-S so I can bully the Challengers and chargers that like to pull up along side you if you have even a somewhat sporty car. My Arteon did a decent job, but with the Type-S, I think the lead would be embarrassing enough for them to think twice about another race. However, with a new addition in the family, I had to give up the sedan life for something bigger so I’m living vicariously through your videos.

Underpowered for sure but what they should offer is another variant, a Type RS. Why not drop in the NSX V6 motor? Keep the electric motors out of it & just drop in the twin turbo 500hp 3.5L V6. Guaranteed too sell 💯 No one would complain it's underpowered anymore. 0-60 times would likely be in between 3.5-4 second range. Or still go with the Type RS & add hybrid electric motors with the 3.0l turbo V6. Total power be close to 420hp. Again that will sell like hotcakes

I have a 01 CL Type S and had the ASPEC as a loaner when I took my car to the dealership for maintenance and the ride was good, interior was nice, but it doesn't make me want to upgrade to the new TLX. Whats interesting about Acura is that when they compare the TLX and the Type S to the competition (BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes) Acura says "..the TLX offers the suspension, brembo brakes, and etc. as standard features whereas for the competition you would have to pay extra for.." But is the TLX better than the competition in all aspects? Cheaper doesn't always mean better and if you are providing a great quality product, people will pay the extra money.

TLX Type-S OR Genesis G70, M340i, CT5-V, or Audi S4?

I've seen 2 on the road so far and I've seen 2 MDX type s's on the road as well.

The value proposition is strong with this one given the competition. For under $1,500 you can get an 8-year, 120k mile, bumper to bumper warranty that is honored by any Honda & Acura dealership. You aren't finding that piece of mind in anything else similar & the Kia 10-year/100k regular warranty is powertrain only.

The TLX is not based on the accord but is its own acura exclusive platform.

R.I.P VTEC, 1989 - 2015. All the new Honda and Acuras sound like every other car now, with no VTEC. 2015 Civic Si was the last true VTEC legend. Gone but not forgotten. Will always love my VTEC K24 CL9.

Ironically this car is a ground up development as its platform is not shared with anything else in Acuras family...Also wish you guys did a comparison review between this car and it's compensation. Some journalist who've done back to drives with this and others in its class say it's handling is bteer than the BMW and Genesis but not as good as the CT4V (best handling car in this space). So it's in the top 3 for handling but at the bottom for power... Probably one of the slowest cars in its class as everything is lighter with similar or more power. For $10k less it's tempting and easy see where the value is... The BMW itself atleast in the United States as a brand have never had resale values as good as Acura vehicles. So in a few years that $10K can grow wider. But the BMW from a drivetrain experience and power and noise the delivery ... There's nothing that quite matches it (C43 AMG is close and maybe CTV4), having driven everything except the Caddy.

I’ve looked at this and an Integra. Disappointed in both. Especially prices of them for what you get. Too many downfalls.

it would be perfect with 40 - 50 HP more, 150 - 200 lbs less weight, a touch Info. display in the middle of the dash and as a option a full digital gauge cluster.

The last reason made no sense cause no one has one. You buy what you like and Acura has good reliability. Most cars lose value once it leaves the lot.

The BMW is not only $10k more, but will be less reliable, more expensive to repair and maintain, and will have worse depreciation. And to my eyes, the Acura is the more attractive car. It's also way more unique and rare to see one. With the BMW it just looks like any other of the million BMW's on the road. In terms of performance, the Acura comes tuner friendly with an engine with forged internals. It won't be difficult to turn up the wick if you so choose.

I love this car but it’s just too big and heavy to bare the Type S badge imo…reminds me of a Honda Legend or Acura RL as you guys would call it, I think.

As an accord touring owner, i can tell you that from my perspective, this seems like a pimped out accord. As of 2024, this has everything i wish my car had (minus the reduced mpgs).

I'm a proud owner of one. Yes, there are faster, stronger, and fancier cars but think about it: 20 years from now, what's the re-sell value compared to the Type-S? Only 330 are made per year. 20 years from now, which ones are still running? 20 years from now, how much will you have invested in maintenance? I'm definitely NOT selling mine anytime soon. I should've held onto my Integra Type-R too.

The car needs a refresh. Its underpowered compared to the competition. Toyota has a 3 cyl. that produces +300 hp. This is a v6 that only makes 355 and its too heavy. The lack of a touchscreen and its the smaller size compared to new products.

I like the way it looks but he is right that I don't see anyone driving this car.

This is an amazing car. I own the 2023 aspec in Canada. Lots of buttons, not hidden in the screen. Like the old school gauges and also like the non touch screen infotainment...i prefer old school type cars..with a bit of tech...its a car not a smart phone....

I’ve been told that white is the hardest colour to colour match. Back when I worked in a Honda plant, the bumpers were not painted with the body. Combine that with different material ( metal vs plastic ) and you will almost always notice a difference. Don’t buy a white car lol

I feel like this is a jack of all trades but master of none. I was really hoping for just a tiny bit more. A tiny bit more then we would have a better car. Maybe we all don't get it and it's just the perfect tuner car.🤔

You have to put the transmission in Sport after you put the car in Sport +. Once you set car to Sport + and transmission to Sport, it will shift at red line every time.

TLX is not based on the accord

TLX IS NOT BASED ON THE HONDA ACCORD. The chassis is bespoke to Acura. MDX and RDX also are no longer based on Honda Pilot and CR-V. Integra is the only Acura based on a Honda.

This car has far more interesting styling than any of the european brands and competing japanese brands, but that technology looks god awful for what's going to be a 60k car after tax and fees and everything. A brand new base Elantra has better screens and tech. The G70 definitely has this beat on technology and very good styling, but doesn't feel as special.

This review is so irrelevant. It has nothing to do with the Honda accord. The transmission has actually revised transmission from the traditional TLX. It does not even share a platform with the Accord so I am very confused on why you keep comparing it to the accord.

I think these RU-vidr need to spend more time with a car before making an initial comment. After owning a transmission like this over time it’s going to become second nature. I can say that from two Acura with this transmission. The shifter and shift mob been around since forever and a lot people don’t like change or something that’s different

I also owned a 2007 Acura TL Type-S. I put almost 280,000 kms on it before i sold it. I had the TLX Type-S on order, but when I drove it, it didn't really impress me. the steering was great, and handling good but it didn't wow me. I also drove the Audi S5 and that also didn't really wow me. instead, in June, a 2023 Kia Stinger GT Elite found it's home in my driveway. just came back from a 7,000 km Yukon trip and with just over 16,000 kms on the odometer, the Kia continues to make me smile. I like the Acura, but I think it pales in the Kia's shadow.

No thank you…sad effort by Honda. I too own a 2007 TL Type S Kinetic Blue..stunning looker, full stop. Pulled next to an older BMW 5 series and was embarrassing left in dust. Aside from resale…truly an inferior experience for 60k

I chose this because I buy my cars, never lease and the German options you can't keep for 6 to 8 years as you'll pay for them twice. The Genesis will fall apart by then. The Caddy, I admit the CT4-V Blackwing really almost got me, but I have to be able to fit 16 yr olds in the back seat. That is a must and the CT4-V BW can't do that. So TLX Type-S it was!

I found it to be an accord on steroids. It felt cheap, light, and bumpy.

I'd easily choose the TLX Type-S over the G70 3.5T. The TLX looks amazing on the road, handles beautifully, and the interior, for me, is far superior in its aesthetic appeal. The G70 performs well, but the exterior profile looks exactly like the OLD TLX, the headlight and taillights design is gimmicky and tacky, and the interior is pretty regular. The Infiniti Q50 doesn't even count. The IS500 is just an old design inside and out. Is the M340i, C43, and S4 worth the $10k-$15k premium over the Type-S? I guess that would depend on how often you truly get to exploit their capabilities. The Germans are actually too powerful for their own good considering that , where I live, I would have very few opportunities to experience it. So, I would probably save my money and go with the TLX Type-S.

There are ZERO....let me repeat, ZERO, new cars worth buying. Every time somebody buys a new car in an economy of inflation you are feeding the issue and making the car market, worse!!! Then when you decided to buy. Buy used cars until inflation lowers.
