Extremely useful test, just the kind of thing that other reviewers don’t do

We recently picked up our i4 e40 M-Sport. On its first three trips of 60-75 miles, mostly highway, it use 4.1, 3.8, and 4.3 mi/kWh. The lowest efficiency was in constant rain and slight uphill, net. The best number was on the same route in the opposite direction. This was using Eco Pro mode and cruise set between 5 and 10 MPH over. So far, I’m greatly impressed! Speaking of vintage CR-Vs, we traded a 2019 EX for the i4. It was an excellent small SUV and we managed an average 35 MPG (at the pump).

I can't wait for the i4 to be more available. Definitely a great bridge to EV for those who want a good looking care they're used to. Those numbers are great for the current EV, maybe even top tier tbh

This is one of the few times that I've seen an EV with an underrated official range! Classic BMW underrating everything even on their EVs now haha

The i4 looks like an absolutely fantastic car, especially considering the fact that they are getting this level of range and what not off of an ICE-platform. Can't wait to see what BMW comes out with when they've got a platform designed for EV's from the ground up. Will recommend this to my dad who is in the market. I'll keep driving my old Volvo V70 5-cylinder til the day it dies. Hope to see Volvo making an EV wagon as well.

Charlie, I am losing track of where BMWs come from these days, can you shed some light? Are you doing a video of that vintage CR-V in your driveway?
@rkgsd
@rkgsd Год назад
The range with the standard 18" wheels is at least 20 miles better. The problem is with the i4 spec'd the way yours is, you automatically get 19' wheels. No way to change it on the configurator.

Thanks for the video! I’ve been mulling over the i4 or Model 3. I have had bmw’s before and love them. Also like that it doesn’t scream ELECTRIC car since I live in Michigan and constantly worry about the harrassment from dumbasses. The model 3 is great for range and charging but not for ride quality, build quality. use EA right now for my iD4 but want a car that can do at least 300miles before a charge. Minus’s for bmw is that I wish they had used a dedicated platform for the i4 and therefore had gotten more out of the car. Alternatively if the model 3/Y had a better ride, heads-up display (i miss mine so much), and instrument cluster, I’d have an easier time making a decision.

its stupid that nobody tests ev cars on country roads not everybody lives in areas where there are highways. I have ioniq 5 i will do this test

Considering if I was to get this, I'd get it with the 18's... That's not too shabby, and at only $16K (the way I would design one) more than a Tesla M3 it's not that bad

I would love to see how much efficiency drops at 80mph and see the test performed in an M50 on the same 19” wheels and tires.

Consumer Reports did a 75mph highway-only range test on a variety of EVs, the i4 M50 among them. The M50 reached 318 miles before it died.
@CFG39
@CFG39 7 месяцев назад
@@BogeyTheBear it must’ve been done during perfect weather and road conditions. In my experience with an M50 on 19s I only managed about 2.9-3.0mi/kWh which would work out to 230-240 miles of range.

Fantastic review. Do you think an I4 with 18” wheels would be efficient enough in range to do a 160 mile round trip commute daily with 80% Soc?
@DailyMotor
@DailyMotor 9 месяцев назад
Absolutely, as long as you're not doing 100 mph on the highway the whole time.
@BogeyTheBear

I have done 140-mile round trips in my E40 with 19" wheels and it took 50% out of SOC each time. I did not use Cruise Control nor Eco Mode on these drives, so I could have tried for better if the mood strikes me to take it slow.

Hey Charlie, thanks for the video. I’m a new i4 edrive 40 owner and am about to take my 1st roadtrip. You mentioned having 270 miles of range at the start of the test (after turning on the AC), but I didn’t hear you mention what your initial charge percentage was at start… did you charge it to and begin the test at 80% (manufacturer’s recommendation)? or did you raise the charge limit to 90%, or all the way to 100% when beginning the test, in order to get the maximum range? Thanks in advance for the insight!

Charlie, you should do the 2023 mitibusthi mirage with 43 mpg rated highway. It's the highest mpg non hybrid car. Would love to see what it can do on the highway.

Wow, yeah I poked through some other cars to challenge you, and the closest I could find is the Jetta which is tied at 43 highway but has a lower city. I'll pitch that story to Mitsubishi!

Sadly the ADAs option is no longer available on the i4 eDrive40 trim... you have to move up to the m50 trim from... which is just a completely trash move by BMW. Also sadly, this vehicle is no longer eligible for EV tax credits with the latest changes to the law. While I've always said that EV tax credits are a subsidy to the OEM, which they receive by raising the MSRP to offset the credit, BMW has yet to lower the price on this vehicle. Maybe they think the price is justified with all vehicles going up in price? Not sure. Otherwise, how I optioned this vehicle, without the M Sports Package, kept the 18" wheels, selected a $650 paint option, and kept the sensatec seats, it came out just under $61k... which is still a bit too rich for my blood...
@mrrkrr
@mrrkrr Год назад
They only removed the adas on eDrive40 because of the chip shortage. Annoying, yes, but better than a backlog of thousands of orders they can't ship.

My i4 states 205kw max charging speed. Very rare to hit the max in any EV, as it depends on outside temp, battery temp, pre-conditioning, charger supply etc. But I have seen mine charge at 186kw, so not too shabby.
