2022 Chevy Bolt EV Gets The Updates It Needed (Now About That Battery Pack...)

Chevy's Bolt has always been a solid compact electric car with great range. The 2022 mid-cycle refresh fixes the details that bothered owners and kept some from buying in the first place. There's a new front and back, more comfortable chairs and a dashboard that doesn't look like it's made from white Styrofoam. Plus there's a substantial $5,500 price cut. Tom Voelk checks out a fully optioned 2LT model and touches on the recall of the LG Chem battery pack (this was shot long before the recall was announced).
At the moment, there is a stop-sale order for both model Bolts. This will be updated as more information comes in.

GM states that LG Chem is being billed for the recall of the 2019-2022 Bolts.... to the tune of over $1 billion USD. LG Chem's stock price cratered today on that financial news -- it lost 11% of its stock market valuation. A very harsh lesson in the importance of manufacturing quality control for LG Chem. Hopefully, the Bolt replacement will come to market with GMs Ultium battery packs soon.... and with a new model name. The Bolt is like the 21st century version of the Vega at this point.... with much lower sales. A damn shame. Excellent work as always, Tom!

Good review, Tom. I bought a new 2020 Bolt in February. I'm afraid the battery recall will make a big difference in resale value even with it being replaced. Luckily, the Bolt is dirt cheap to operate - I'll just have to keep it longer than I had planned.

I am in the same boat. Bought a 2020 used about a few weeks ago. I bought it specifically because it didn't have the recall. I like the vehicle and really there is nothing like it at that price point. I am debating keeping it or trying an MSRP swap. :(

I leased a 2017 Limited. The battery thing, while a marketing challenge for chevrolet the risk analysis of the fires per vehicle is really low. it's not great that it happens, and battery fires are definitely more energetic than a gasoline fire. If Chevy wasn't making it right for previous owners i'd be all torches and pitchforks but they seem to be doing the right thing. I gave back my lease in April and have been looking for the replacement car. I dunno if I'll do another Bolt yet, but its significantly cheaper than it was in 2017 too which is a killer feature for the bolt, better interior, lower price. It was a great car and hopefully more people will enjoy this version

I own a 2019 Bolt EV which I love. Bought it in late 2020 with >10k miles. Got my new battery in January at 17500 miles. Mine is an LT without any fancy or practical upgrades, so no DCFC. But I love it! It always recharges overnight, but I cannot drive it across the state as it would take much too long to recharge. I chuckled at some of the comments in your review and your offhand dismissal of the Kia Niro-EV. Based on my driving behavior and staying in fast-enough-for-me Eco mode I get 347 miles on a charge in spring/summer/fall Atlanta weather. The Niro-EV has a sunroof, decently sized vertical-not-angled rear door storage pockets, mesh pockets on the back of both front seats, its lane keeping assist maintains a rock-steady path down the center or any lane, and cruise control (standard, not optional) works flawlessly. I own a Niro-EV and test drove a VW ID.4 out of curiosity. The ID.4 in sport mode has slower acceleration than the Niro-EV in Eco mode. ID.4's infotainment software was slow/buggy compared to what I'm used to. VW has a plusher interior, but that wasn't enough to get me to sell the car I'm in.

I work in car sales, and my lot currently has a 2022 Bolt with a max range indicated at 404 miles with a full charge. It also doesn't show an existing recall, so it has the new battery. Check on Bolt forums to see what people are seeing as far as battery degradation. The best way to help preserve the battery is to keep DC fast charging to a minimum and don't charge the battery all the way up. In your case you could set it at 80 percent and you'd be good charging at work.

Did Chevy fix the constitutively on radio problem in the Bolts? In our 2018 Bolt, you can only essentially mute the radio. Next time you get in the car, the radio immediately goes on when you turn the car on. Very annoying...but not as annoying as reduced range due to the battery recall issue.

Very nice review Tom. Thank you. We are in the midst of making our home EV-friendly. Next month, a 13.5KWH solar array will be installed, delivering 125% of our power needs. The extra 25% is with an EV in mind. Here's something that came as a surprise. My home, which has just come out of an extensive renovation, uses 11,000 KWH in a year at a cost of $1500. The surprise is in the realization that my Toyota 4Runner costs a lot more to run.....$2400 of gas in a year. That's a long winded way of saying the potential energy $ savings in switching to EV's is significant.....particularly when a solar array is added to the equation.

I went from an old Subaru to a Bolt last October in Colorado and the Bolt is great, if boring, in the snow. I put some CrossClimate 2's on it, that plus the traction control and weight keeps it planted in the snow. I can't do donuts or play in the snow as well as in the 'Roo, but for normal driving it was far better than I expected. February, March and April had more snow than normal, often 10+ inches on the ground, almost 100 inches total, and the Bolt did great. The regen braking is especially nice in the snow because your wheels cannot lock up, plus one pedal driving gets you to pay attention and start stopping sooner. You don't have to worry about snow wrecking the radiator, because there is none. In rain the Bolt is better because you can practically drive the thing underwater. The whole powertrain is sealed, and doesn't need air. The 12v accessories are water resistant, but probably not ip68 like the powertrain. To be fair my 'Roo was a 1993, so no traction control or ABS, but the Bolt is good in the snow. The best car I've driven in the snow was my 1986 Subaru GL, that little 2 door hatchback was an absolute snow demon. Put it in 4lo and you could pull one of these modern SUVs that only pretend to be offroad capable up a snowy hill.

I've been wanting to see/drive one for some time, in Virginia Beach they are very very rare to see (despite VAB being Tesla infested). The used ones when they can be found are as or more expensive than new. I want the 2LT model, and the red looks good. Buy the VW iD.4 or something else. GM isn't saying how they are gonna resolve this battery fiasco.. If you can get by with a 170 mile range in Urban driving, I recommend the BMW i3. If you need a bit more range to avoid range anxiety, option the i3 with a range extender. As long as there is gas in the tank, the range extender will give you endless range. The base model Mini Cooper EV is only $19k after all the tax incentives.. If you are leasing and plan to give the car up after 30 month, go for something you can really drive hard..

If it’s just “Lane Keep Assist” it’s not meant to keep you centered in the lane automatically…. it just warns you and/or nudges the wheel if you start going out of your lane. Lane centering seen in things like Tesla Autopilot and Ford’s Bluecruise are more advanced than lane keep assist which has been around for years.

Semantics. Systems from Nissan, Kia, and Hyundai keep the cars very well centered without the bouncing around. Super Cruise is on a whole new level with a decidedly locked in dynamic. Same with Teammate. Haven't tried BlueCruise. Autopilot is also good but I've had too many "squirrel!" moments for me to get overly comfortable with it.

One of the major issues with EV's is in the support area. Not too many dealers have certified EV technicians who can perform maintenance or repairs. Even if EV's are low maintenance, you have to find a dealership with a service technician who is certified and trained to work on EV's. With EV auto sales representing 2%, dealerships have a hard time justifying training a technician. With a limited number of technicians to go around, dealerships have to share resources to do the maintenance. That could be one of the reasons that the dealers weren't pushing Chevy Volts when they first came out.

Not an entire fix when it comes to looks. It's still a little frumpy looking. Its slightly larger sibling is a much more balanced and attractive design. That would be my pick or save up a little more $ to get into the Ionic 5. I am curious as to how your Cadillac EV (hybrid) is doing and I think it would be great if you did a real-life synopsis video that would let us know what it's like to live with one. I would find it very informative. Also, it's a gorgeous design that still looks stunning today. Love to see some footage of it. Outrageously overprices at inception, they were a huge bargain once the prices dropped due to lack of sales. GM makes some brilliant advances while making some serious blunders. Another great video review!

Correct. And until the pack is diagnosed or replaced, set the software charge level limit to 90% and try not drive under 70 miles of range. Interesting, of the 4 owners I talked to, the only concern I heard was about resale value. One was pissed off about charging outside. ? why is there a reference to ''brake pedal'' I thought these EV's don't use a dedicated brake pedal but instead you just step off the gas pedal to come to a complete stop? (this question comes as I heard him say something that sounds odd to me at minute 2:53
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 3 месяца назад
Because there is a brake pedal and it is used to stop the vehicle. In most EVs, the first part of the pedal travel is recuperation drag, the farther it's pushed the more the hydraulic brakes are feathered in. For emergency situations, you need the stopping power of real binders, not motor/generator drag. FWIW, over the years, I've started opting out of "one pedal drive" since I feel I don't react to emergency situations as optimally. In most EVs, the rate of drag is adjustable, you can set it to your liking. It's a personal choice.

Ok, I scanned all the comments and no mention of your guess of a 230 mile range MINUS the recommended 70 mile reserve = 160 mile actual range. Kinda reminds me of Toyota saying the RAV4 Prime will go 600 miles but only if you run the tank empty. Or start on top of a mountain.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 2 года назад
Defending GM is GMs job but let's live in the real world. The 70 mile reserve is a recommendation, not a hard and fast rule that GM is implementing (because it could do that with a software update). I've only talked to 4 owners but none of them were bothered by that (the furthest one of them drove was a 65 mile commute daily. They charge nightly. The only concern I heard was resale. One didn't like charging outside so much.

We are still charge ours inside the garage. We just don't charge it to 100%. We don't keep it plugged in overnight. 44,000 miles and no expenses except new tires. It only cost about $40.00 per month to operate. The defective batteries were made by LG a Korean company. Although GM has recalled all of the Bolts, all of the Bolts don't have defective batteries. They will be replacing all of the batteries, eventually, anyway. It will be like getting a new engine. The range will also increase for the older Bolts.
@SpockvsMcCoy
@SpockvsMcCoy 2 года назад
Sales of the Bolt EV have actually increased in 2021 before this latest recall. Used Bolts are one of the fastest selling used vehicles. Demand for battery electric vehicles like the Bolt and Leaf is only strong when gasoline is expensive ($4 or $5 per gallon in certain cities). GM made a mistake by introducing the Bolt before a fully electric Cadillac rather than the opposite.
@DrivenCarReviews

@@DrivenCarReviews Elon Musk was correct in first introducing a long range BEV (Model S) that was sexy, fast, and desirable...before introducing a cheaper BEV (Model 3) that was only a little less sexy, fast, and desirable. At first GM, Ford, and Nissan focused on research that revolved around the average miles driven per day..and thus introduced BEV commuter cars in their non-luxury divisions that were not sexy, fast, or desirable. A BEV like that only sells well when gasoline prices remain consistently high, which rarely happens. Also, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi should have already had both Model S and Model 3 competitors a few years ago instead of plug in hybrids. However, they did not because they did not want to lose too much money. All of Tesla's competitors made these miscalculations that have allowed Tesla to gain market share and survive.
