I drive a 2019 Chevy Bolt EV. Live in the heat of Central Texas; often above 100 degrees.....the battery efficiency is really good in hot weather and air conditioner is outstanding. There is a little bit of battery conditioning that happens.....approx. -2% of battery on hot days. And the air conditioner penalty is only about -5% of battery. You get a much larger penalty running the heater in winter below 50 degrees of -30% battery.

@@bmw803 Assuming you mean Buffalo, NY - I am in the same area and buying the same vehicle. Heated seats and steering wheel should do wonders (assuming yours come with it) and will be less impactful on the battery & defrost as needed. Also, if you are able to leave it on the charger and pre-condition the battery/cabin, that should help too. I am most worried about winter driving with the snow we can get and really hope it handles well. I am a truck guy trying to make this work.

@@miked412 My Wife got a VW Atlas last years, so I'm not worried about snow, but we also have a 2015 VOLT and despite the heated seats, etc. You still need to run the heat. I tried managing without, it's too cold and windows fog up. If it's in the 30's, maybe, but below, forget it.

FYI the tires that the Bolt and Bolt EUV come with from the factory are self sealing tires. They're designed to seal up to 1/4" holes as they happen. Basically the "spare tire in a can" type of thing without having to reinflate the tire.
@Cello69.
@Cello69. 2 года назад
This is correct. I didn’t believe it at first. Then came winter andI swapped out the factory tires to snow tires. The factory tires is lined on the inside with a thick coat of some glue gunk.

Probably why he said the car doesn't like sporty driving, those kinds of tires are pretty bad. A small car like the EUV would love some grippy tires

I think you missed the point about battery degradation in hot areas. Having owned and following a Nissan Leaf myself- the Leaf doesn’t not have any battery management system (only passive), and thus the battery experiences temp extremes without protection. Folks in places like Arizona experience notable and permanent damage and reduction in range. The heat fries and permanently kills the battery in a short time. Nissan came out with a better Lizzard battery that was somewhat better but still impacted. Cold also severely impacts the battery with significantly reduced range in the cold. Ours would also go into turtle mode because the battery was so cold it was protecting itself. The Bolt has battery conditioning that will warm or cool the battery as necessary to keep in good health, and performance and performance less impacted. There are folks with a minimal loss in range with 175,000 miles or more from my reading. It is important to have the Bolt plugged in to condition the battery in temperature extremes.

I use to charge my Chevy volt with an extension cord. It is possible. You might want to use the heavier duty extension cords as weak ones will die after a short while. They tend to get the outlet plate really hot so keep on eye out for burns or heat marks around outlets. You might have to swap those for commercial grade 120v outlets. Also watch for charger thieves, I use to park on part of charger so it couldn't be taken 🤙🏼
@davidwalia3229
@davidwalia3229 2 года назад
One mid-grade extension cord that I used melted part of the outlet. When I had the 120v charger plugged into the wall, that never happened, for over 2 years. The 120v charger may have a temperature sensor in the plug to change the amperage and control the temperature. The extension cords usually don't have that.

@D_Spear
@D_Spear 2 года назад
@@davidwalia3229 because you used an extension cord, it actually caused the amperage to go up due to voltage drop from the length of the cord, especially if it was a longer one. Also what could have happened is the gauge of the cord being 14-16 gauge. I’d recommend not using a cord but if you must, buy the shortest one that you can use and a high quality. I’d just go for a 10 gauge one.
@sp1nrx
@sp1nrx 2 года назад
I use a 100 foot 10 gauge110v extension cord. There have been no problems except I had the replace the plug on the cord (it was a used cord and the plug wasn't in the best shape). I have been charging for over a year and there's been no problem. GM does warn of checking out your electrical system before charging the car. BTW--- all electric cars will have this warning not just GM....

As someone who has a Tesla Model 3 Performance, I think your Bolt EUV f'n rocks🤘 It's nearly as cool as my Tesla in many ways, and even better in others. Cases in point: the Model 3 still doesn't have rear cross-traffic alert, at least nowhere near as good as it is on the Bolt and Volt, and you get to use Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, which we don't have. You also have the cooled seats option, which we don't, and a rear hatch like your Bolt has is _so_ much more usable than a trunk like the Model 3 has.

Something that impressed us after driving both cars was that the Bolt has a full car surround camera top view when backing up OR going forward. Not sure if that's all trims, but the Bolt Premier trim is still 7k cheaper than a base Model 3, but with competitive technology.

First, I just wanted to say thanks for all your videos. You have really helped when I was doing research on the Bolts. I just bought my new 2022 EUV on the 21st right from dealer inventory. They got 12 in and sold all but two right away. Love, love love it. It's the 2LT in white. Chevy is now giving the same discount on the 2022's that they will be discounting the 2023's. Don't need to wait. It cost me just under $35,000 out the door. They wanted to charge $3,500 over MSRP until I threatened to walk out. I told them I'm more than willing to go down to Los Angeles (I'm in Las Vegas) where I know I can get it at MSRP. Surprisingly, they didn't try to tack on a bunch of crap in financing to make more money. I have a Genesis for long trips so I'm not worried about range anxiety. Also, I sold my 2017 Ford Focus ST to Carmax for $16,500 which is only $3,500 less than I paid for it new 5 years and 77,000 mile ago. I felt now is the time to make this move with the discount from Chevy and the used car market is about to crash with all the repossessions happening. Another thing that I haven't seen anyone mention is since I live in the desert, I can sit in my Bolt with the A/C running for long periods of time without worry. You can't do that with an ICE car because it might start to overheat. I've done it twice already waiting for my husband while he was at the doctors. (They only allow the patient in because of Covid restrictions)

I have a spare in my 22 EV. I had it in my Volt and just moved it to the Bolt. Its a Cruise spare, mounted with a jack that I picked up on ebay for less than $100. It fits under the false floor in the back just fine. Also, the new Bolts come with run flat tires. I live in Florida and do not need the ventilated seats. Driving at highway speeds I am getting well over 250 miles per charge. Around town its well over 300 miles but normally I plug in when we get home so I have never depleted the traction battery

Well done video. I like to see the Bolt getting some credit. We had a 2019 and really liked it, but did the buy back and moved up to an Ioniq 5. If you want to try a really awesome EV, drive the Ioniq 5. The 5 will remain our primary vehicle, but I am very tempted to sell our #2 vehicle--a Chrysler Pacifica PHEV--and get a Bolt. The Bolt is still such a great around town car.

I had an EUV last summer in Arlington, TX and the heat impacts the range and efficiency but not as bad as the cold...but you'll have to use more battery to keep the cabin cool and on really hot days you'll use battery to keep battery cool...so you'll see your miles drop faster for sure...but not as bad as using the heater in cold weather.

@joshmatlock1020
@joshmatlock1020 2 года назад
@@Ghos7lyUndead I can't say an exact number but you'll hear/feel the battery conditioning kick on (fans and low vibration) and you'll notice while it's conditioning that the range goes down a little faster until that kicks off....it doesn't usually stay on too long in my experience...just a few minutes until the battery is at the right temperature again and then the range goes back to depleting at a more normal rate...and of course the more you blast the AC the lower your range is...but this will really only matter on road trips, as long as you keep the vehicle charged up...It never impacted my life. I'd run the AC at comfortable level and never had issues with range...EVER.

Great video! Very informative and convincing. I’ve been leasing Hondas for many years and very happy but I just feel the time is right to go EV which I’m thinking should be much more efficient than a hybrid because you’re not supporting two different systems. I get good gas mileage in my CRV hybrid But it’s still gas mileage and oil and the muffler system etc. The big issue could be the range but 99% of my driving is within 20 miles. Getting the in home charger is a great incentive. Anyway I got the bug and I’m excited to see what Chevy is doing so… I’ll let you know if/when I take the plunge.

A couple of comments on charging. For 120V charging, an extension cord is OK provided it is rated for a minimum of 13 amps and is less than 100 ft. The best practice is to get a /3 cord, or better a 12/3. The thicker the wire, the less heating and risk of fire. There is a setting for charging at 12 amps @ 120V, but it requires essentially a dedicated circuit. A garage opener circuit MAY work for that. It is 50% more charging capacity than at 8 amps. This is 5 miles replenished per hour versus 3.3, assuming 3.5 miles/ kW. The best charging option is to get a 40-amp circuit with a NEMA 14-50 receptacle. This draws the same power as an electric oven and can feasibly be added to all but the oldest homes (125 amp or greater service entrance preferred). This charger will replenish at a rate of 25 miles each hour. There is no need to get a 60- or 90-amp supercharger, unless your service can accommodate it. Most EVs can be charged in one night.

They expect it to have level 3 charging speeds of way more expensive cars. The only problem I’m having is with Qmerit. I got such a high estimate to install the Nema 1450 outlet that I declined the estimate. It would have been $650 out of pocket to install it literally next to my breaker panel. They told me that was the one and only estimate I would receive.

L1 is fine for almost all commuters, but L2 would be completely fine for almost anyone to full-charge every night. L1 gives plenty of miles overnight. Even if your commute is long at 80 miles total, and you only can add back 40 each day, you would have plenty to get though the week and a full charge again by Monday morning.

I just came back from a trip to a Scout camp on a mountain. I don’t live in a mountainous area so that was, interesting driving to say the least! Does the Bolt EUV handle steep inclines/declines well? Not that I’d drive many but, it’s a thing I am wondering now. For the record, a 2010 Pontiac Vibe that sat for over a year is a BAD choice for that kind of thing. Very bad. Sorry for all the transmission fluid on your roads PA! Good mechanics there at least!

Bolt is worth $33k? When Corolla is $20-21k? Bought my 2012 Sonic LS, $5000 four years ago. Is nearly identical in size yet 800# lighter, is trouble and recall free, have changed oil routinely and tires and battery once. Range above 450, refills in minutes anywhere and is always ready to go. Commute is between Cynthiana and Lexington with @ 130 miles range remaining, goes rain or snow. Drove it here from Phoenix, went back then moved here, plus a round trip to PC this year without a worry. How is your Bolt better?

I am considering an EUV. I have not seen any of these on the road, so I do not know how they look on the road or parked next to other vehicles. I only seen a photo of it parked next to a Lucid, and it looked ok. Would like to see it parked next to normal cars like a Blazer or Equinox from the rear to get a size comparison for appearance. This would be for the wife, I have a Volt which I may replace with a Blazer EV or Equinox EV. Volt goes to the daughter. Loved your response on whether you are sold on EV's. I feel the same.

I used an extension cord to charge, it ended up welding the plug together, had to replace the plug on my charger. Obviously not super safe, not recommended. If you must use an extension cord get the heaviest gauge you can, your house wiring is14-gauge for a 15-amp circuit, get as close to that as possible. Smaller gauge equals larger wire. Even better, add a box and wall outlet to your extension cord, or make one from heavy cable & a heavy duty plug

That’s going to vary depending on the state in which you live. In my state, I have to pay an extra $100 per year to renew my license plates compared to ICE vehicles. Their logic is that since I’m not buying gas and not paying gas tax, therefore I’m not contributing to road repairs.

Six months late to the party here, but I have been watching your videos the whole time trying to decide what to buy...and with the new tax credits I went out and got a Bolt on New Year's Day. Now something we can't seem to figure out (and our friends with Bolts don't know either) is whether we should be topping off the battery after every drive or waiting until it's much lower. We might drive only 20-30 miles a week, so if we're not supposed to top it off then we could wait months to charge, just not sure if that's the right strategy with these LG batteries....
@MetzTech
@MetzTech Год назад
I don’t think there is necessarily a right or wrong way. Ideally follow the 80/20 rule to extend the life of your battery. Don’t charge past 80% unless you need to, and don’t let the battery drop below 20% all the time. I typically let it drain a bit before charging instead of topping off after every trip. But that’s just what works for me. I think with the amount of miles you’re driving I think charging once a week or as needed is your best bet!

Bolt does not like sharp turns because rear suspension is an outdated torsion beam. I cannot believe GM went for such a downgrade. Most modern cars have fully independent rear suspension. This was a dealbreaker for me, but I test drove Bolt in 2018 and it was absolutely amazing overall. My only complaint was hard seats, but they fixed the seats in this newer version.

The accessory is actually only a compressor. The tires are self sealing so small leaks should not become an issue. If you get a big hole or have a blowout you are going to need to call AAA.
@roncarguy6361
@roncarguy6361 2 года назад
I have a '20 LT. The author showed a view of the sub floor. That sub floor has a tray with a tow hook and an area molded to hold a GM air compressor and can of fix a flat. I bought( actually negotiated ) from the dealer that compressor & can. I removed the tray and stored it. Now the remaining "well" is 21.5 inches wide. A donut spare from a Chevy Sonic has the same wheel bolt pattern as the Bolt, and is 22.5 inches in diameter. Remove the air from the temporary spare and it will fit in the well. Carry the compressor under the tire along with scissor jack and tools from a Chevy S-10/Blazer. You're in business. ADVICE: I believe it is a good idea to only put the spare on the rear wheel. BTW this only works in Bolts that do not use that well for the sub woofer.

My Tesla Model 3 was the worst car I’ve ever owned. The service center would joke that my car spent more time with them instead of with me. Very angry I gave up my Volt to get it as my Volt had given me 100k worry-free miles. So I got rid of the Tesla and went to a pre-owned Cruze until I decide if I want a Bolt EUV or to wait for Equinox/Blazer. Volt was my first GM car as my dad worked for Nissan corporate for 30 years so I frequently had a Nissan/Infiniti. The Volt changed my perception of GM and I’m happy with my Cruze. So my next car will be a GM too.

I wonder if this is even worth it rather than just getting an Evgo pass for a couple bucks a month and have discounted rates at the Dc charger 1 mile from my house. However, I don’t wanna sit in a walmart parking lot for an hour and a half so maybe the extension cord is worth doing assuming I was even allowed to do it.

I have a 2021 bolt EV and on hot days the car makes a lot of noise while it is charging to try to cool the battery. At first it surprised me and I unplugged it but later I learned it was just the cooling system running and you need to leave it plugged in to keep the battery cool. As long as you don't unplug it when the battery is very warm and let it cool it should be fine. You may want to be sure your garage is well ventilated though to let the heat out.
