I love that you guys are on RU-vid. That way when you talk about topics I don't care about like child safety seats or you review cars that are too expensive or get crappy gas mileage, I can just fast forward until you hit a topic of interest. Keep up the great work.

I have this same GV70, it’s beautiful and love it! I upgraded from my beloved G70 sedan, but this is a nicer drive, a bit higher. Truly proud to own this vehicle, I hope it treats me well as my G70 did!

Brake rotors are essentially disposable at this point, most shops haven't used their brake lathes in years.

Hence why have your brakes serviced to remove rust. Rotors these days are no longer machined.

Loved the GV70 impressions. And thank you so much for comparing the engines. I was torn on the 2.5 vs the 3.5 - but I wanted the top trim - and in the 3.5 it’s just too much (for my wallet).

For a reliable 4x4 under $10K, I was thinking a 2005-15 Nissan Xterra. It's a great off roader and it has a good reliability record.

On Brakes - shops also no longer want to spend the time to turn rotors, and very few of their employees will have that skill. It just is not worth the trouble for any large service center or dealer to do that work. Everything now is replace, not repair.
@michaellim4165
@michaellim4165 3 года назад
It's not the skills but the OEM brakes have thinned the rotors itself to the point where rotor grinding will be a safety hazard. This is all due to car companies trying to meet EPA fuel economy standards by shaving weight from rotating mass.

I drove the V6 in the GV80, and it's not quite at the same level as Mercedes' 4 cylinder performance IMHO. And the steering is a bit too light. Biggest issue for Genesis is the dealership. They still having the same sales and service personnel as Hyundai. No where near other luxury brands.

I agree with Jenn; the Ford Flex may become a classic given its unique styling and low production numbers. She also makes a good point that electronics may limit the appeal of future classics. How many of us have a VCR? If it breaks, repair options are limited.
@deus_ex_machina_
@deus_ex_machina_ 3 года назад
For what's it's worth, there still are cheap (in both senses of the word) VCR players made these days, mostly by Chinese companies. But for 'live services', a lack of updates to an internet connected vehicle may pose a security risk, or, if the servers are shut down, services may cease to work altogether. See any number of failed Kickstarters for examples.

Hey consumer reports. The gentleman who asked about having his dealer put aftermarket brakes on his car. Let him know that I did that also recently. The dealers front brakes and rotor package for my manual Mazda 6 2015, would have been $500. With me having him put on my aftermarket rotors and pads (bought from Amazon), the total came out to $320 (which included his $200 labor charge). I've been so happy with the performance of those brakes, that I ordered and received new rotors and pads (Bosch brand) for the back even though I don't need them yet. Tell Jan she was right. The reason I needed brakes is less than a year earlier another dealer convinced me to just add new pads and trim the existing rotors, to save cost. Big mistake! Within 6 months the warping and shimmy came back so bad I hated driving the car.

I'm an old man so I'll start there 😂 but you all touched on something that truly irks me and I have often wondered why the auto journalists have "approved" of the electronic style gear selectors. I don't hear much fuss about it but boyyyy I can't stand them and could go on all day! Lol. The main point being that it can easily be confused with other controls. Rotary knobs are better than buttons for that tactile feedback, but why?? A physical shifter just makes sense, I mean we still have steering wheels! End rant. 🤦🏾‍♂️🙃

@hugdeath929
@hugdeath929 Год назад
I think the gear selector may be confusing if the driver is hopping in and out of different vehicles or if you're only going to spend maybe ten minutes in the vehicle. I've test driven the GV70 three times and haven't confused the controller with the shifter at all. They are similar in shape but they are not positioned in the same place and they are textured differently. I imagine owners likely won't have an issue at all. To me confusing those two controls would be akin to confusing preset 2 with preset 3 or front wiper with rear wiper. I don't get it. I'm fine with the distance of the touch screen because I usually have my copilot make any extra adjustments that I can't make from the wheel. When I'm in the vehicle by myself I plan to use the controller as it requires less of a distraction for me. The room in the GV80 of course is better but I'm not a fan of the looks of the exterior of that vehicle. I'm personally interested in something more sporty and dynamic and I think we get more of that in the GV70 than in the GV80. If I was looking for more room I would likely look more toward a Palisade or Telluride. Palisade offers a massaging seat, better looking interior and exterior (after 2023 change to Telluride), power reclining and folding third row and heated third row seats. Telluride offers power folding mirrors, kick proof rear climate controls mounted to the ceiling, safer (away from drinks) wireless charging pad and physical shifter (for those that care). Even though Kia completely ruined the exterior with the fisher price gray plastic trim pieces on the lower exterior I would pick the Telluride. I feel like power folding mirrors on any vehicle especially a vehicle this size is a must have for me. I also prefer the audio system in the Telluride but I wish the Telluride received the massaging seat. My question may be something you can answer. If not would you please start asking the manufacturers this question as you get an opportunity to connect with them? I would like to know why it seems like most of the major manufacturers (kudos Honda) do not allow the purchaser to get three seats in the second row when you opt for the top trims. This is especially frustrating in larger vehicles like CX90, Palisade and Telluride. Most of the third rows are not suitable for any significant seat time for adults, This results in just 4 adult seats in the large suv we just purchased. The whole point of purchasing a larger sport UTILITY vehicle is for more space otherwise we could buy a 4Runner, Santa Fe, Sorrento, Passport or something similar. I really enjoyed the conversation today and I stayed until the end. 😉

You are all so smart. I love to watch your videos. In addition, she is so nice. Her voice is soothing. It calms me down. I currently lease a 2022 Volvo XC60 B6. It this GV70 better than mine? I like my Volvo, but I had a few issues with the infotainment system. Plus the car got stuck the other day. I couldn’t turn it off, it didn’t go into drive. I took it to Westport Volvo. They charged me $1,800. They replaced the two front tires plus a “chip” located under the shifter. They told me it had coffee around. I usually don’t drink coffee. I was upset about it and I feel it was a ripoff. Thoughts?
@altisamuels8694
@altisamuels8694 3 года назад
This brake issue as become a way for some car manufacturers and dealers to team up to rip of car owner on brake jobs. The rotors now are made to go bad before the actual pads and in older car you normally could be changing pads up to three to four times before changing rotors. It’s just a big ripoff and I’m surprised that consumer report didn’t even try to call out manufacturers and dealerships and this.
@aussie2uGA
@aussie2uGA 3 года назад
Keep in mind the newer thinner rotors that wear quicker are lighter and warp less easily. We used to have those really thick cast iron rotors that would last a long time but besides the weight, they could not dissipate heat as easily and would warp easier, leading to pedal pulsation.

I do know that many German cars like Mercedes Benz and BMW actually requires replacing both pads and rotors for a brake service because supposedly the brake rotors on those cars have a softer material and can't be turned on a lathe.
@aussie2uGA
@aussie2uGA 3 года назад
It's not really that it's softer, but it's thinner. They used to be thick cast iron and now they're far thinner with some carbon mixed in. Combined with more aggressive friction pads, they wear the thin rotor material to the point where it's no longer within tolerance to turn.

I routinely hear how great the Genesis cars are, however, I rarely see any on the road. I live in a pretty affluent area (greater Seattle area). So I don’t think it’s an issue of affordability. Tesla Model3 is the equivalent of a Honda Civic in the early 90’s. I made this comment on another YT channel and they cited low or lack of inventory as the reason. Do you agree? I can go days without seeing one pre-Covid.

6:57 well that's interesting. I was just having this discussion the other day, it started off on games with a heavy emphasis on day on patches, and lead to the early versions of the Model S losing it's OTA capabilities thanks to cell networks phasing out 3G. thing about how much worse any OTA related stuff will get in the future. personally, I think aftermarket self contained systems are going to become popular in the future for exactly this reason. companies won't support software that old and could leave cars that would otherwise work great, bricked. The other possibility, because some of these systems would be such a headache to recreate or work around, is to just do a reshell into a kit car that can run with all the mechanical components, but with a completely different hardware and software set up that won't be so buggy. With ICE cars this is a huge undertaking with the gas engine alone. with electric cars, like the aforementioned Model S, the only hard part is the battery, because it's so massive. everything else is easy mode compared to say, cramming in a K-swap.

7:55 the good news there is 3D printing is going to make that much easier. if the part has an STL file, it's just a matter of asking "the shop" to make it. right now, that is a really expensive prospect, but it's getting cheaper, and more common. also, I'm not nerding out, you're nerding out. lol
