itchy boots travelled 60,000 km around the world on 250 honda dual sport. She even was fastest in Kalahara rally adventure group, where other riders had bigger bikes. So surely it is ridiculous to say that 500cc is too small for riding :)

Hello Nathan. I enjoy all your youtubevideos a lot👌🏼 What do you think about the new NX 500? 90% the same as the latest model CB500X but now with traction control and Abs both to disable offroad? I have to get used to the new apperrance. Like the CB500X but dislike the lcd display from that one. Kind Regards Eric from Holland

I’ve just got back from a 3200km trip around northern Spain and Portugal camping on my 2021 CB500X. I love it. It’s a better touring bike in so many ways than the Pan European I owned for nine years before trading it in for the 500. I fitted a Rally Raid Level 1 rear shock with remote preload adjuster and the handling, even when fully loaded is great. It’s a good touring bike even before bringing the bargain price and economy into the equation. I haven’t tried the 2022 model but if it is an improvement on the post 2019 model it will be very good indeed.

I agree it's all you really need in a bike. I liked the 2020 CB500X I test rode, aside from it being a bit vanilla. TBH on the SW500 I was surpised at how well the RE Himalayans went. no lack of speed or cornering ability it seemed on the backroads.

The one thing that annoys me about the modern CB 500s is their power has decreased and the weight has went up. I've a PC32 cb500, year 2000 model, which were made from about 1993 I think. 57 Hp, lighter and are still being used in a race series for their durability and excellent handling. I understand the hp figure for A1 compliance, but it's just feels like a step backwards. My bikes got old carbs and still doing 68/70 mpg, and I'm wringing it's neck every chance I get. Could get 57 Hp out of the 500 back then and are known for doing well over 100k miles easily, even after being used on track. 60hp minimum should be available these days, and just have a 47hp restriction options available. That extra 13+ hp and extra torque really would make the bike possibly the best all-round road bike.

Yes I still do not get the ,,it is just a 500!,,I am 64 and 45 years ago that 500 cc was a big bike.I had Triumph super bikes and heavy modern Roadkings and some in between.Now still very happy with my cb 500 x and it does do most,,normal,,off-road stuff I find. The extra power on more powerful bikes hardly gets used so I would not pay all that extra money for it.Also at more than 2 euro a liter the 3 liter per 100 km is a really big bonus.But all should experience it for themselves off course.

@Speed Twin,agreed,the bike rides and stops very well indeed.I've put 15,000miles on my 2020 model and I've no complaints at all,motorways,A roads,back lanes,it takes them all in it's stride and through the twisties will hold it's own with much much bigger bikes.I don't ride offroad though. I've been through a phase of wanting something bigger but can't find anything that comes close to it for alround performance especially when fuel economy is between 85 to 90mpg(imperial),I won't be changing it anytime soon? Someone commented about the CB500X being high revving,I put a 16t front sprocket on mine to lift the gearing a little,it worked a treat for motorway riding and made 1st gear more useable. I recently read an article by a chap on a RTW trip whose put 98,000miles on his with it only needing regular maintence and IIRC he'd only had the valves checked once!

It might be enough power but I feel it works too hard making the power, it's a little higher in the rpm range, has almost non existent torque 31.57 ftlbs. You can't just make the gearing taller I know for a fact it won't pull it.

Totally agree on the CC thing Nathan if you go back to the 1920s the 500 singles were the superbikes, 650 twins in the 60s were the sweet spot sometimes I think and one of the most fun bikes I've ever ridden was the Norton 650ss from 1967. One moment stands out once on a Yamaha rd250lc n a lad on a superbike commenting about CC when we set off from the pub within two bends I was gone into the distance lol always thought the smaller stuff = the best fun you can have at legal Road speeds n is certainly more grin inducing. Dads just let his gsxr 750 go an I sold the Vstrom 650xt on Friday tripled the miles an got all my money back for stock a year later cant beat that, let them go for a pair of 2021 KTM390 ADV's can't wait gonna prep them for Norway n Iceland and some light off road fun in the UK. Hopefully have them this week. I just wish they would stick a 270 degree firing order on the 500x that'd really make it sweet I think. I'd love for some of the Japanese bikes to go on a diet when I think back to the way some of the classic two stroke yams handled that I used as dailys sublime handling is the best way I'd describe them.

They are a really good all rounder, I had the 2017 model. When you’re touring alone or with similar bikes the acceleration isn’t a problem and I never really noticed it. The problem came when touring with a group of 900cc plus bikes, when they went for an overtake they were gone, I had to plan and leave much more space to get past. On the busy roads I got left behind, and lost the group completely at one point. So I traded in for a Tracer 7GT. Not massively powerful, around 74hp but the same weight as the 500. Bloody brilliant bike. 👍 Still have a soft spot for the 500x though.

I have been loving my 2022 cb500x so far. I have not ridden the previous years so have no comparison, but I think the suspension is good enough where I don’t feel the need to improve it (as of yet). As for the cast wheels, I am fine with them: yes the spoked wheels look the part more, but the cast give you tubeless tires (a huge plus on a bike at this price point) and this isn’t a bike you’d be taking in hard enough off-road situations that you’d damage a wheel. The engine is dead reliable and oddly efficient: I received 78mpg (USA gallons) on my last tank. The only real downside is the engine completely lacks character.

@nathanthepostman
@nathanthepostman 2 года назад
That's a good question. The Rally Raid bike I believe has their hardest spring rate fitted, so can feel quite firm for gentle road riding. Where it shines is when you're really pushing on, including off road. It has a much higher upper limit of capabaliity than the stock shock. The new 2022 bike seems to have closed the gap a bit. I found it really plush on the road and it worked ok on rougher terrain, so I think more people are going to be happy with it as it is

Funny how many different opinions there are. Personally I think the bike is gorgeous, and I think spoke wheels are hideous. So it's all in the eyes of the beholder I reckon. I'm trying to decide between the 500 and the 750. The 750 has a lower center of gravity and the huge center compartment. I'm wondering if there would be much difference on mountain roads. I wouldn't do any serious off-road riding, but I do like to go up gravel mountain roads in southwest Colorado. They can be a bit bumpy and rutted, but nothing too serious. Any thoughts?

It’s never been billed as an off-road bike, it’s an adventure bike. I’ve taken mine to places I wouldn’t consider taking a big adventure bike and it’s handled it with ease.

@@davidmatthews3093 Any bike can go off road if you ride slowly enough. The cb500x is not really any better off road than a cb500f. It's a city bike. A good one.

@@Paul_Grace The X is appreciably 'better' than an F model off-road - it has a 19" front wheel, longer travel suspension, more ground clearance and a more upright seating position - all of which make it far more appropriate for riding on unsurfaced roads and trails. As David Matthews suggests - these are 'all-terrain' adventure bikes, not dedicated trail bikes.

@@jmo2752 Yes the 2022 model is much better in many ways. 'Adventure' is a strange descriptor and covers many bases.

Don't like the looks of that pointy front. Japanese late teenager market??? An adult cannot ride this thing around.
