While the Hyundai Kona EV and Tesla Model Y aren't exactly in the same class, they still have similarities. And, especially if Tesla comes out with the SR Model Y again, there are good and bad things about both.

Kona actually does have a frunk option. If you look near the end of the manual it shows you how to take the tub out of the well in the trunk and installing it into the front. It significantly increases your boot capacity in the kona as well.

In Europe Tesla making cars with CCS, and Superchargers also going to be available for all EVs. This is no argument for Tesla here anymore as anyone can charge anywhere. :)

While I appreciate the work that went into this review/video I would have to point out the several flaws. This is the older model Y which is discontinued v. the brand new 2022 Kona. As noted in your review the Tesla is built to be an electric car and the Kona is built on the existing ICE platform. Also as noted in the review are the size discrepancies but it was what I would consider severely understated. 1.) The Y is 21" longer and 5" wider than the Kona!!! That is a massive difference in the automobile world. It's no wonder that car has a ton more of space. It's not only gargantuan compared to the Kona it's built to be an electric car so the engineering to go into it from the beginning for that space to be available is night and day. With that pointed out, you really need to throw the "it has more space" argument out the window. It better have more space! 2.) Price. It's the old model Y, of course it's going to be cheaper. Comparing the new model Y to the Kona isn't even in the same ballpark. The Kona is (*)$17,305 dollars cheaper than the current model Y which would be a little bit more level of a playing field if you are going to make a comparison of these two cars. (*)This amount is significantly more when you factor in tax credits and rebates which the Kona is eligible for and the Tesla is not. 3.) Range. While the new model Y get's about 60 more miles than the new Kona you will be paying (*)17k MORE for that range!!! Yikes. Thanks, but no thanks. Now let's backtrack and compare that to the cars you tested here. The real world driving range difference between these two cars were about 40 miles with the Kona getting 40 miles more but at a price that was about a thousand dollars more. Let's just say for arguments sake that the new Y get's 60 miles more than the Kona. You're not paying a couple of thousand dollars for that difference. You are paying (*)$17,305 dollars more for 60 miles more!!?! Kona wins again. 4.) Performance. Might as well throw this one out the window as well. Neither one of these cars are built with, nor would the masses purchase them with, performance in mind. As noted in your video the Kona is really about a couple of people using it to get around town and/or luggage for two for a road trip/vacation. The Y is for a family of 4 and neither one is meant to be a Mustang. Another interesting test would be to add enough weight in the Y that would account for a family of 4 with luggage and such and enough weight for two with luggage in the Kona and then, take both of them on a range test. Speaking of which, I really feel sorry for the poor souls who bought the old model Y. It's really meant for a family of 4 but it's range is so limited that going on any type of long excursion would be exhausting. With only a real world range of 180 miles once you get to measly 150 miles on your journey it's time to pull over and start charging. Even worse one you load the wife and kids and luggage in it. All that for the right to pay 45k. Horrible. And to me the new model Y is even worse. If it were a couple of thousand dollars increase then, yeah, okay I get it. But at nearly 20k more it's outrageously overpriced for what you get compared v. the outgoing model Y and what one can get for a much cheaper ICE.

I have the european version of the Electric Kona. Personally I love it, but I never drove a Tesla to make a comparison. The main reasons I bought it instead of a Tesla 3 are: price (Teslas are imported and therefore more expensive, european Hyundais are manufactured in Slovakia) and physical buttons (I'm probably getting old). I agree about the charging port on the front. It doesn't help in the appearance and also can be of some inconvenience. Here where I live it's not uncommon to find chargers placed on the side of the parking space with short cables, making it impossible to reach the charging port while parking properly.

I might be mistaken about Teslas being imported and not manufactured in Europe, but they are more expensive nonetheless. Also, no government help for them (I don't know exactly the reasons), making the price difference even wider.

About internal space, the Kona is not very spacious, but I'm 5'5", so it doesn't really matter for me... 😅

I also just noticed that the HUD is not available in most (of not all) Konas in the US. That's a shame, Kona's HUD is a very solid feature.

I love our Tesla and we are getting ready to purchase a Kona EV (when we can - availability is not good right now). However, not mentioned is that there is no handles above the doors to grab onto as a passenger in the Tesla. That has always bothered me when my husband drives. We are getting the Kona for our second vehicle as I have always driven smaller vehicles and the Tesla feels a bit large for me.

using michelin's pilot a/s3+ in 18'' on my kona .. drops the 0-60 by over a full second and quarter mile 13.96.. pretty close to model y SR number. It makes the car much more planted and enjoyable as well .. with the low center of gravity it's surprising to see how well it handles curves

Ok, the Kona is way too small to compete against the Y. Esspecially legroom rear is bad. But a very efficient, very good car with funfactor, If you have grip! You can go for the Kona if your children are under 14. There too much hard plastic in the lower trimms of the Kona for themoney! Only the Premiumversion is fine.

Hyundai and VW EV are way better than Tesla in design. They kept traditional design, so that customer can look into it. Tesla hided everything under trunk. So if you have problem you cannot tell wht is wrong in Tesla. Hyundai and VW are smarter by keeping traditional car handling. I love it. Tesla, bye bye!!!!

🇺🇸 Y is currently $60k base. Waiting for BYD, Ev6, Bz4x, etc. More competition will bring price down and better range. Btw the 2.. Kona for around town. Neither for long trips. ALL EVS are appliances, basic transport. Govt and ev investors are really pushing EVs. Debate is still out on how environmentally friendly ev are. Electricity still requires coal burning power plants. Ev is not magic. Still very dirty. Just not at your tailpipes.
@crinolynneendymion8755
@crinolynneendymion8755 2 года назад
Very dirty? Electricity is generated from a variety of sources; gasoline is a highly refined, cracked version of crude oil. The dirtiest fossil fuel used to produce electricity is natural gas which is burned much more cleanly that gasoline which requires an after use chemical reaction to process it's off gases. Simply put, you're pedalling bogus facts. The question is why? An EV is faster, more powerful, more agile, more robust than an ICE could ever be. It simply works better in every respect range. But when you realise the Model T could only go 20 miles before needing refueling and that didn't stop it being the iconic appliance of the day, you simply know that EV's are going to take over.
@seymorefact4333
@seymorefact4333 2 года назад
@@crinolynneendymion8755 they will need more charging stations and more coal burning plants! Generating Electricity is not a clean process! If it's created by man, it's dirty and for profit for the few! OPEC just needs to drop price per barrel for a few years and you won't hear about EVs anymore. EV is being forced on to consumers by ev investment banks that lobbied the corrupt Congress. Get rid of the tax incentives... let this market dictate decide.

@FEV369
@FEV369 2 года назад
@@Mirror0CJ That's not even close to true. There is no such thing as green energy, at this point a person is just being lazy for not knowing this. Wind and solar are extremely dirty when you start from the beginning, not after they are installed. Basically, when the due date to replace all that green energy comes you will need a shit load of energy to do that. To make a windmill or solar you must create a massive energy debt that gets paid back over many years.
