2022 Mazda BT-50 3.0 High Review - The Best Pickup In Malaysia?

Pickup trucks are gaining popularity among buyers thanks to their wide breadth of ability, generous proportions, and given our weather... wading depth. But the fact of the matter is that pickup trucks have never been able to hold a candle to SUVs in terms of overall refinement.
But the Mazda BT-50 is... different. Built off the current-generation Isuzu D-Max it packs a new 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine, an updated interior, and truly impressive levels of refinement and on-road poise. Could this be the truck that finally changes our Managing Editor's opinion on trucks?

For some reason the 3.0 spec is much more comfortable than the 1.9, this may be because of the larger rims and tyres. The 3.0 is excellent btw, it'll spin it's wheels from start and will eagerly drift when exiting corners, even in dry conditions.

Mazda Malaysia doesn't have any test unit in Malaysia. I have enquired since 3 months ago and no progress since. They continue to advertise it but no car to deliver or test. Such a turn off when there are genuine customers out there. No effort from Mazda part but continue to advertise

Good review thanks. I've never owned a pickup truck before, but will need one soon. Is the ride discomfort bad? (Compared to other 4wds)

This is the most sorted of all pickups in Malaysia, barring only the Ranger Raptor with its special shocks.

Hey, i'm in a headache on either getting the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Which do you suggest as a motoring journalist.

They're both good cars, but it depends highly on what you prioritise. If you do alot of long-distance driving then the Camry would be a good bet, but if your drive is mostly urban, the Accord's smaller engine will likely be more efficient. They both offer great ADAS system though.

Also about the remote engine starting, it's very misleading. The engine can only be started when the car is locked. When you unlock the car to enter it, the engine will shut off, and you have to start it again. It's not like James Bond's car where you can start the car, get in and drive off. Apparently the explanation for this is that Mazda don't want intruders to enter the car after you've remote started it, so it shuts off, and needs the proximity key inside to restart it again. It's actually a terrible design, and I hope they reprogram the system.

The 1.9L has wireless CarPlay. I’m sure the 3.0 has the same.

That's awfully kind. But there were bigger things in the truck. Like the seats. Oh, the seats...
