Like the review. I’ll give it a couple of years before giving them my coin but a test drive might convince me to switch from my Tacoma. Their boxed frame should.be stiffer which is good for the heavy loading I do
@Offshore1977
@Offshore1977 3 года назад
@@marcpikas2859 fully boxed frame front to back transfers the weight load to the front of the frame causing a more jittery ride. Open c channel rear allows flexing and a smoother ride. That’s one reason tractor trailers use open c channel in the rear frame. That’s why Nissan uses hydraulic body mounts to try and dampen this.
@marcpikas2859
@marcpikas2859 3 года назад
@@Offshore1977 I also drive a fully boxed frame Nissan d21 and find the ride more stable than the Tacoma when loaded. I guess there is more to it than just boxing a frame. The soft Tacoma rear end does great when I offroad but the extra twisting is no good for my slide in camper.

I bet Chevy /GMC cut the extended cab for their next Colorado canyon Toyota already did I think Ford may do same for next gen the extra cab is a single cab the back seat is flip down or something for kids rather worthless in 1/4 ton

I bought a 2022 pro-4x fully loaded (tactical green) 2 weeks ago. The hydraulic steering may take a little getting used to, but it feels great, it feels like a truck should in my opinion. It’s a very smooth and quiet ride and gets up to speed very quickly, leather seats are also nice and comfortable. I almost bought a Tacoma until I saw this redesign and I decided to wait. I’m really glad I did because to me this is a better truck (and fully loaded cheaper than a comparable Tacoma). I drive 5-6 hours a day for work (50/50 city/highway) and am averaging 21.1 mpg. I used to have a Volvo S60 that got 25 mpg so I can’t complain!

You guys are great and I just absolutely love the Frontier, always have. It’s such an honest truck. Nissan got the formula right back around 2012 and they’ve stuck with it. I’m happy to see a new engine and a much better interior and exterior but I’m happier to see the same ol’ underpinnings that I’ve known and loved for the better part of this century. Like Dad said in his closing statement, it’s “familiar”. You know what you’re getting and you’re getting it for a fair price. Way to go Nissan!
@dlg5485
@dlg5485 2 года назад
I don't know about the "fair price" part. I agree that the Frontier has always been the best midsize truck, but the price of the redesign has grown substantially. The unbeatable value of the previous gen is basically gone now, but even with the price hike it's still the only midsize truck I would buy. I'm actually planning on getting a new Pro4x next summer.

It’s exactly what it aims to be…… it drives like a truck, and its a really comfortable firm ride. I like the hydraulic steering. Excellent in 4WD. I’m still deciding whether to get snow tires or not…. the Hankook AT2s that came with it so far, no complaints, they handle well in winter conditions.

I bought a 2022 Frontier SV a few weeks back and steering effort feels fine to me. Not sure why people are complaining about the "heavy" steering. It does take a little more effort but it never would have even made it onto my radar had people not been commenting so much. The benefit to the weighted steering is a feeling of solidity, and rail-like tracking on the highway. A great trade-off in my opinion.

The Frontier is a solid truck, always has been. I hear a lot of nit picky blah blah blah. I think Nissan knows how to make money by making a great truck and not changing shit year in and year out before the changes are proven reliable. I will take hydraulic steering over electric any day. It's not a refresh"! jesus people, every time Toyota does a facelift its celebrated as a "redesign" and here there is literally nothing the same as the previous gen, except some (not all) elements of the frame. yet we are hunting for negative words to use on this fantastic model, so as to not offend the Toyota fanboys. I like the steering. Feels like a truck. I don't like soft steering, feels like a car. I have the 2017 and use it as a work truck in the Sierras/Lake Tahoe. Turn radius doesn't bother me a bit, I do own a JEEP, turns on a dime. I've been in the other midsized they all have their pros and cons. Like the Titan Nissan trucks have the most stuff I need and like. Gas mileage is 350 miles on a tank in the mountains and 70mph highway speed limits. "High output" V6 last forever with scheduled maintenance. I use 4 low instead of the decent control when off roading, much more control without using ABS. I use utili-trac system everyday, wonderful tie-down system. Sorry to see its not on the bottom of the bed in this one. Hopefully it's still an option as I'd get this over any of the other midsized in a heartbeat. Low bed sides makes life SO MUCH better than the other midsized trucks too.

@jeffissimo1221
@jeffissimo1221 3 года назад
It may not be "ALL NEW" but does it have to be? 1) Electric steering assist may be "modern" but on an offroad capable truck, and one that may experience water fording, do you really want electric assist or would you rather have hydraulic? 2) The fuel economy improvements may be minimal, but the Tacoma didn't see vast improvements in fuel economy when Toyota butchered their engine/trans combo. 3) Building upon the Taco's engine and transmission combo, reusing what worked for Nissan with the engine and transmission may be what sets it apart from the Tacoma in the midsize market. I still see and hear Tacoma owners who dislike their Tacoma's shifting and the way the engine and trans endlessly communicate with each other and shifts or hold gears for no apparent reason.
@rebelcitysports1outlook713

The Tacoma is trash and most of the honest reviewers will note how the 6 speed auto constantly hunts for gears. This 2022 Frontier is miles better as far as powertrain.
@jeffissimo1221
@jeffissimo1221 3 года назад
@@rebelcitysports1outlook713 That's exactly why I have been following this release. There seems to be so much deception around the Tacoma's transmission issue. From not-so-honest reviews to flat out mob rule on sites like Tacoma World. If anyone asks the dreaded transmission question they are literally insulted and berated by those guys. Coming from the Jeep side, where I've never met a person who was unwilling to help answer a question, the Taco guys were more fanatics than anything else. I understand brand loyalty, but I can still be honest about the Jeep and point out its shortcomings. So, like I said, I am very much interested in this release. I was glad to see that the engine was used in the last model. Normally I avoid 1st year production, but it seems like Nissan did the smart thing, learned from the mistakes Toyota made with the Tacoma, and did more of an incremental update with the 2021 and 2022 trucks.

@@jeffissimo1221 Yep. It's akin to the same occult that will defend Tesla for misaligned body panel. I've got to be honest and say that I think many of them are being compensated to speak positive of the product by Toyota. The 05-15 Tacoma was a much better "truck" than the 16+ and most of the reviewers just flat out won't admit that Toyota messed it up. The Tacoma is sold on looks alone, it has to be, it's absolutely gutless underneath.

Some really beautiful shots in this video, great job! I like the approach of this vehicle. People often talk about not buying the first model year of a new generation vehicle due to concerns over dependability. I think Nissan has done a good job of belaying some of those concerns by adding the new powertrain last year (in the US) and slowly upgrading the rest of the vehicle. I imagine this helps keep costs down while also minimizing generational concerns of buyers. Will it be a winning strategy for them? I guess we'll have to wait and see... The midsize segment has been interesting to follow lately. With capabilities of pickups/trucks constantly increasing, these midsize trucks are now nearly as capable of 1/2 tons of not too long ago. Not to mention we now we have the mini-trucks being re-introduced to the market! I really appreciate all of your coverage and look forward to your continued insights. Thanks for the great content Truck King!

Th VQ engine was fantastic, always feeling like it was ready to go, even at speed. Ride and handling of the outgoing Frontier was what I expected from a mid-sized truck, so the fact it's not too different doesn't alarm me either. It's become a much more aggressively styled truck with an interior that look good and incorporates a lot for the money.

I have been looking at this truck since it reentered the market with an 80%+ all new truck. I have sat in many of the old one and I was not a fan. Now it's a legit competitor if I am able to get to a point where I can afford a new mid size truck. My dream truck is the Colorado ZR2, but this one might be a solid second place to look at. I forgot about them not going electronic steering, oh well I don't need the Co Pilot 360 nannies. They definitely improved the seats 💺even though they are not the zero gravity seats that are in many other new Nissans. I think one of the reasons why they didn't spend as much money and do more is they know the market and they got burned by providing so many options in the redesigned Titan and Titan XD and not selling as many as they hoped for. Great review guys, might see a Baja storm or Tactical Green Frontier in my driveway next year.

Was very excited about the new looks. That quickly turned to disappointment when they took away the manual option. Sat in one, it was nice. But if I wasn't going to be able to get a manual, I decided I should look at the other automatic options. Test drove a Ridgeline. Hands down a better pick-up. (Pick-up, not truck). The Ridgeline is bigger in all the important ways. The front seats are wider and more spacious front cab. The rear seats have more room, and with the seats folded up - provide cavernous storage the Frontier back seats can only dream about. And the Ridgeline 5'-4" bed is better than the Frontier 5' bed. Not really because of the extra 4" of length, but because of the extra 8" of width AND because the Ridgeline bed is 100% flat (more useful) AND because it has barn door tailgate AND it has a massive locking weathertight trunk. - The Honda is a tad pricier, but it's more than a tad larger and more practical. But the Honda is more refined, and is better built...

Definitely a handsome looking truck. In today's world that is so competitive with more offerings than just a few years ago, a vehicle needs to have something special that makes it stand out from the pack. Sadly I think this is just too much of a master of none to attract new buyers. Does it have a special engine or transmission? No. Does it have any useful features nobody else is doing? No. Does it have any hardware that makes it more capable than the pack? No. It's a Camry of the truck world. Generally a good vehicle but too bland to stand out. Looks great, but looks alone won't interest me as a buyer. What does Toyota have? It's reputation for reliability and general capability. What does GM have? The zr2 which comes with an ultra rare front locker in the segment and an available diesel engine. What does Ford have? The only turbo gas engine offered in the segment- great for high altitude. Gladiator is too expensive to be compared to the rest. What does Nissan have? A medium blend of what everything else offers but nothing that makes it stand out. A good truck but not special. Your complaint that they could have done more is valid. All it needed was one special thing to get people excited about it. This thing just blends in too much. Nobody is really buzzing about it.
@matthewpeterson3329
@matthewpeterson3329 3 года назад
I cant disagree with anything you said. What should be evident in this vehicle is a price that is 1/3 cheaper than the rest of the segment. Sure, design costs money, but the things that require actual engineering didn't get changed. All changes were cosmetic. To me, this truck should only cost about $5k more than last year's model in the same trim... at most. I think I saw the same truck last year for about $25k. Now it's up around $35k+. Nissan is an incredibly durable vehicle that I always saw as a bargain. Now it's not particularly special, and no longer a bargain, regardless of it being less expensive than the others in segment.
@AP-cc1uw
@AP-cc1uw 3 года назад
@@matthewpeterson3329 100% agree. I think the value here might be the long term reliability, but that might not help sales for a few years as data on that becomes available. We can extrapolate a bit on the reliability of the last generation but that might not be enough to get people into this truck. It's awkward timing as well, with a new Ranger/Tacoma/Colorado all being released in the next 2 years. They will likely eclipse the Frontier on several fronts so to make it viable it NEEDS to be significantly cheaper.

@@AP-cc1uw It has the best powertrain of the entire midsize segment besides the turbo 4 in the Ranger. If you want to argue the n/a v6 reliability the Frontier wins all day. This powertrain is miles better than the gutless Tacoma.

Truck King The ‘22 Nissan Frontier is NOT a “heavily refresh” pickup. It’s body shares _nothing_ with the previous 2nd Gen models other than the frame. But that’s where the buck stops. A “resh” is where a manufacturer changes only the front fascia and/or the look of the rear end.

The Frontier's turning radius is better than the Tacoma and only 0.3 feet worse than the Ranger. So not only is it not the worst, it's barely behind the Ranger (by four inches!!).

Id buy it if I was looking for a compact. I prefer this over the ecoboost ranger. Being a Nissan though, they're going to have to sell it for less than the competition. Sell it for less, gain some loyal buyers and then in 2 or 3 generations, you can jack the price up like Toyota.

It’s a highly modified version of the existing frame which was very good to begin with. The hydraulic steering is, to me preferred over some numb electric system and if you need all those autonomous driving systems, maybe you should take the bus. New engine, transmission, totally redone interior and electronic suite and you don’t consider this a new version? Maybe you guys aren’t such good reviewers.
