It's important to remember that just because a car with more power exists, that doesn't make the less powerful car bad. I used to drive a 1975 BMW 2002 tii, which was a small, light, nimble car, and considered quite quick and sporty. I never tested 0-60 times, but according to those who did, it was about 9 seconds. I've seen other reviews of the Forester Wilderness do it in 8. So.... it's quick enough for me.

We find the car OK around town but when the kids and luggage are in the car is very slow and almost dangerous when merging or trying to pass anything.

To say there is little difference vs your friend's old 2000 Forester is BS and overly dramatic. I just upgraded from a 2001 Forester to a 2022 Forester Wilderness and there the '22. is WAY faster, smoother, more refined, more fuel efficient, more comfortable, and better in every single measure by a HUGE margin. Would I prefer it be offered with the turbo? Sure, but it isn't nearly as slow as you suggest with your description.

I got the Forester because if one is going to prioritize power and torque only, then Subaru is not the right choice. I had an Outback and it's too long and too wide and it's a sedan and a wagon and a SUV all at the same time and that's not a plus for me. The Forester in practical life if perfect for me. But that's me, I've had both. Thanks for the honest review.

I'm an owner of a Wilderness OB. Its my 3rd OB and I'm loyal to the brand, Subaru has never let me down. I will say, the turbo is incredible on the OB. The acceleration and low end torque is amazing. I honestly could never get back in a 2.5 naturally aspirated again, the feel is night and day.

@@SSemi1 Definitely! It is a fact that a naturally aspirated engine will last longer and be overall more reliable than a turbo charged engine. Turbo’s put accelerated strain on an engine and internals will wear out faster than a naturally aspirated engine. If I invest in a car that I plan on keeping for a very long time you can bet it will never be a turbo!

@@ericf5976 That’s incredibly false.. as a owner of multiple turbo vehicles that have made it over 200k it’s all about how you maintain said vehicle… this isn’t the 90s anymore turbo technology has come a long way and these engines are built for it. “Side note the 3 I’ve owned were Saabs all but one made it to 200k on original turbo”

I find most reviewers put too much weight in more powerful engines. While there's no doubt the 2.4T has much more power and torque, I never found the Forester "slow". I would say it is adequate. The turbo engine adds a lot of cost, complexity and fuel consumption to the ownership experience. Also, moving to the Outback means a completely different shaped vehicle that is also much larger (outside dimensions especially). Both are good vehicles, but kind of their own thing. We chose the Forester because it fits in the garage a bit better and we really liked the look of it, the visibility when in it, the more simple controls (I assume newer models may move to the large screen as that seems to be the way everything is going) and just the way it works as a daily driver. It's also well priced. We traded in our 2016 Kia Sorento Turbo, and while it had more power, we don't really miss it. Half the time, you're stuck in traffic anyway, so the extra cost is wasted. If you are shopping in this segment, ignore the power numbers on paper and just drive the vehicles and pick the one that matches your needs as a whole. Maybe you do like the extra power, but you like everything else in the a vehicle with less power. You'd likely be happiest in something that better matches your needs than sacrificing daily utility and enjoyment for extra power you may rarely use anyway.

You don’t want a Outback if its loaded up with people and equipment like he says. The Forester can carry 147 lbs more payload than the Outback. When I added up the passengers, equipment, etc I needed that extra 147 pounds. It drives fine in altitude and loaded… plus that turbo engine and oil runs hotter… would be concerned about engine in the long- run. The Forester also has a transmission water cooler, not sure about the Outback. Also watch sarah-n- tuned , she reviewed both 2022 models. And the Forester was able to climb the hill,right away,but the Outback tried several times and couldn’t do it. Maybe they fixed the issue on newer Outback models but it looked like the wheels quit spinning on the hill. Another thing it easier to load a bike into the back because it is a wider entry and taller, prefer the load ability of the Forester.

Just picked up the Outback Wilderness 2 weeks ago and I’m totally in love with it! The turbo was a definite for me, everything else that comes with it was icing on the cake.

The turbo definitely has its advantages, but Subaru drivers know that going in. I just had my Subaru Forester delivered, and I am very pleased with it. It accelerates perfectly fine getting onto the freeway, and does so without me having to floor it. Possibly it will be lacking some power when I head up into the mountains, but I have friends who have a Forester, and they said it's perfectly fine. Considering there are a ton of Foresters in the mountain communities, they can't be that bad. Furthermore, it feels way more solid on the road than I would gather it to be from this review. And I have none of that pitching and rolling mentioned either. In addition, the steering is perfectly responsive. Maybe I'm just lucky but it is a great ride, and very solid and connected to the road. As for the interior... it's great. I get why some people like the Outback. Some people, like this dude, need a more stylish interior, and having that large infotainment system gives him more of that Tesla-like, slab of a computer tablet slapped on the dash which so many want nowadays. But in all my investigating of both Subarus, most reviewers would disagree with what's being said here about its functionality, saying that the Outback infotainment center is way less responsive and more distracting to operate. It may "look good" for those who are looking for style, not function, but it doesn't quite measure up to the Forester with its more nostalgic knobs and controls, in addition to the touch screen.

Agreed, I own 2016 Forester, just love it. Yes, the HP is less, but it's OK, not too bad. Can go anywhere I wish though))

I have the Forester Wilderness and it works just fine for me. I thought I wanted the 12 inch screen, but many OB owners hate how you have to use the screen for so many adjustments. The 8 inch screen and knobs and switches/buttons works perfect. While it isn't a powerhouse, I've never felt like I needed a lot more power. The ride suits me just fine, but my other car is a pickup truck. And I just sold my Jeep Wrangler, so the ride is quite luxurious by comparison. My wife has an Outback Touring and I still like my Forester better. It sits higher up and is perfect for my 6' 2" frame. I have no regrets about getting my Forester Wilderness.

One thing I'm surprised I don't hear many people talk about in these comparison videos is the extra headroom when you have the seats down in the Forester. My partner and I went with the Forester Wilderness in part for this reason (as well as price and other reasons) because we really want to get more into camping in our car and will really appreciate being able to sit up easier.

I had an opportunity to take extended test drives of the 2021 Forester and Outback this year, and my money still goes to the Forester. I really hated how the climate controls were integrated in the infotainment system, I'd much rather have physical knobs that I can adjust without looking down. I ordered my '23 Forester Wilderness yesterday and I couldn't be more excited.

I just bought a new 2022 Forester Wilderness and I love it. I watched so many RU-vid reviews that mentioned that it was low on power. I bought it without a test drive and on the ride home from the dealership I was shocked by it's acceleration, quietness and responsiveness. I also found that I really like the CVT transmission as well. I'm glad that I didn't listen to all the negative comments that I found on so many of the RU-vid videos.

@@Sawartist same. Owned the Forester for 2 months and these reviews are terrible. I jump into fast traffic extremely quick and usually have to slow down. I’d say these reviewers are reading a boring script and are mediocre drivers. Forester tows 3,000 lbs and is geared for that. Amazing vehicle and DOES have great power.

I plan to do the same. I want the more basic car with non turbo engine. I know th poser is great. But like simplicity. Honda’s new CRV was and is great but now they only offer Turbo and Hybrid. I also like the Radio in the Forrester. I am now debating the Sport and the Wilderness.

Just from the photos, the Forester is the winner for me due to the physical knobs for controls. It’s a wishful thinking, but if Subaru blessed us with a manual transmission, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. For now, I am stay with my 2018 Forrester MT until it gives up on me.

I have a 2021 Forester (base model) and love it. It's my first Subaru & previously I had a Toyota Matrix that I drove to 255,000 mi; it was roughly the same size as the Forester. But you're exactly right, the Forester is *slow* and not flashy. But I got it for the AWD, which has been fantastic. I live where there is a lot of snow and ice several months of the year, and it hasn't had a single problem navigating that kind of terrain. I've off-roaded some incredibly rocky terrain and it handled everything fine. The gas mileage is surprisingly pretty good, as I drive it to work a few days a week and average 31mpg. I've loaded up sheets of plywood and lumber on crossrails connected to the roof rack and even with freeway driving haven't had any problems. It's a great little crossover!

I test drove both cars and went with the forester wilderness. The infotainment and in the outback was annoying to use, small sunroof, and the extra 9 inches of length wasn’t worth it for the minimal increase in cargo capacity. I’ve had the forester wilderness loaded going through mountain passes in BC with no issues. It’s not fast at all but it has enough power.

I agree the Forester fine it actually has more space than the outback due to design it has a sufficient amount of power that get the job done granted it's no sports car but it quick enough for most easy to drive because of it's size and gives and exceptionally smooth and just the right amount comfort this coming from someone who use to own a 6cylinder now proudly owns a Forester

The Forester Wilderness has that Sport# mode that engages immediate and gives the torque needed to merge or pass. Forester just works for me when I look at the total package.

I’m looking at getting the forester wilderness and was wondering if you ever drove from van to Kelowna on the coquihalla with it or if you think a long trip like that would be fine to take with the forester. Plan on doing a lot of travelling like that/off roading so any thoughts helps

@@bigmacdig7201 I drove to Kelowna and Kamloops with 5 people and luggage in the forester and it was fine. I was just under 4000 RPM on the big long hills with a little extra power in reserve. It’s not fast but it’ll do what you need. We averaged around 9 to 10 litres per 100km. The outback wilderness would be a lot more fun in the mountains but you’ll use a lot more fuel.

You are absolutely right in that the Wilderness handles just like any Outback. I went from a 2017 3.6R to a 2020 Limited XT and then now I own the 2022 OBW. It takes a bit getting used to the lift on the OBW (you do definitely notice it right, but after a while, you don't notice it anymore). The lift definitely does give it a trucky feeling, which isn't bad. Still love the car.

I went with the Forester in part because I liked the predicable power. I'd rather keep my foot planted and know what I have to work with than the XT engine where the turbo + cvt is all over the place. Been driving "momentum" sports cars for years, so I suppose that helps. The greenhouse and traditional controls put it over the top. Tough decision though. The Outback drives really well and has useful long cargo space.

I bought my wife a new Outback last November (2022) with the 2.5 liter naturally aspirated engine as she uses it to commute. We also use it as our road car for its comfortable ride and we need the extra room for our 120# Chocolate Lab. The best mpg that we’ve got was only 28-29 mpg. I’ll ad a K&N intake and a 3 inch Borla exhaust system. This will increase the mpg, torque and horsepower. I’ve had these 2 mods installed on our other vehicles and have noticed the changes listed above.

We get 5-6 feet of snow every winter and we live on a private road. When coming off the county road and into our road, we have to put our Outback into Xmode just to get up our road and into our garage. We have to engage our Rav and our 4X4 pickup as well. Sometimes when we have to go to either Seattle or Spokane in the winter at times the snow is so deep over Blewitt pass, everyone is driving 20-25mph so we put our Outback into Xmode

Researched this car segment for the last 2 months, my findings, - 5th gen forester rated #1 in safety and readability over all others including RAV, trial hawk, honda and bronco. That said, it has been a long road for Subaru from the CVT tranny , oil consumption, head gasket issues of past generation vehicles. At 6'3, CR just announced the Forester is #1 with tall drivers as well, no surprise as the "green house" visibility is very attractive. All the safety dings can be disabled permanently, with the exception of engine on/off at stop. After market solution will solve that as well. So, I will be picking up my Subaru Forester Wilderness / pearl white next week. Comfortable driving on and off road, safety and readability, looks, honest service advisors that I have visited with during this time, all have pushed me this direction. And finally driving my daughters 2017 Forester premium, sold me on being a Subie owner. Suggested maintenance to ensure long life; 30k diff (F/R) service, 40k CVT Transmission service, and oil changes every 4k. You can disable the auto stop/start. Autostop Eliminator costs $99.99 (even cheaper with discount codes) and allows you to turn auto stop/start on and off at your convenience. It's the only modification I made to my Forester Wilderness and I love it. I'm 6' 2" and I agree the Forester is perfect for taller people.

I like the Forester and have 21 at first I was skeptical but once I drove it fell in love it's practical straight forward has a higher seating position easy to drive , smooth has the right amount power that's consistent and linear. It's not fast but quick enough for most and I have no issues merging on the highway and easy to maneuver and has good steering and brakes

I really get tired of people with their turbo hang ups. What is the obsession with getting 0-60 fast? You need to hit the speed limit faster than the other dude? I'm way more interested in how it handles off road. That's why I got a Wilderness.

I enjoyed the review but clearly value different things than Clifford. I ordered the Forester Wilderness a couple of months ago and get it in three weeks. The functionality and basics are far more important than aesthetics and flashy screens. This review reassured me in my decision.

@@joebuck4496 Those issues were with past generations, as in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd, as Subaru has ZERO recalls in 2022 through May with their 5th generation vehicles (2019 and newer). they have made great strides to improve all their platforms, and the CR ratings show the results. PEACE

My Forester came in early so I’ve had it 3 months now. I haven’t done anything but commute and haul the kids around, but I love it. My son bought a Crosstrek Sport a month after me. It seems to be infectious as friends and family are starting to look at Subaru models.

@@650tonyd Better off road gear ratio/ mpg, CVT turbos suck, Forester has better X-mode, better handling at low and high speeds/turning, it’s not a wagon, better visibility/ 4 inches higher in cabin seating, better moon roof, better body styling (in my opinion), lower price, body cladding goes up higher on forester without paying extra, Outback’s head unit clumsily adds digital climate control,

@@650tonyd I am fairly certain there will be a Wilderness Ascent. It will not be released for at least 2-3 years and will probably be part of a larger remodel. The Crosstrek wilderness is the next to be released some time in 2023, none of this is for sure because of supply chain issues.

Reviewing a slow car and then focusing on it isn't a good reviewer. And by the way a car that goes 0-60 in less than 9 seconds isnt slow, in the 70s and 80s and 90s that would've been a sports car. Get a grip the power is fine for this car.

My forester wilderness is on order in BC Canada. Not the prettier one but I went with it because of better mpg, better approach/dep angles, bigger sunroof, less expensive MSRP, better infotainment, better sound system, and a lot less complaints vs. the outback wilderness online from other owners (cracking windshields, slow/non-tactile infotainment, suspension noises, unpredictable turbo boost, bad speakers, plastic cladding is different and fades/discolours quickly). The only thing that would've made the FW perfect is giving it 65 (comes with 60) sidewall size tires like the outback, to suck up bumps and protect the rims a bit. The FW wheels just seem a tab bit small stock eh?

These vehicles have driver assist and are very advanced to basically drive themselves on nice painted roads. Also, the forester’s lower gearing allows for 0-60 at just under 8 seconds, which is really not that slow for a non-turbo suv. Thought he could’ve giving a more helpful review, just odd never mentions all the technology these vehicles actually have.

I like the Turbo in the Outback, but I like the system in the Forester more than the Outback. But overall.. I don’t like both of these. Mainly because of the CVT and maybe their laggy Starlink infotainment systems and their “updated” eyesight system. I don’t usually like CVTs that often, but they’re decent in most Subarus, but they suck. My moms Forester had an engine problem, a suspension issue, and a tire pressure issue 2 years ago. And the reason I mentioned the eyesight system because it beeps a lot and it’s kinda annoying in my opinion. The Forester is okay right now. Update: My moms Forester is getting the suspension fixed.

I'm gonna keep saying until subaru does it, put the Crosstrek PHEV hybrid system in the forestor there is enough room that it doesn't eat as much trunk space as the Crosstrek and the ability to run hvac efficiently when car camping not to mention adding a high wattage inverter like all those prius campers

Looks are subjective. I think the Forester looks terrific. The Outback looks Kim Kardashian to me (backside hanging out too far). Also, people, Americans especially, are getting spoiled on power. It seems everyone wants a vehicle that can accelerate like a Ferrari these days.

I think Subaru could keep going in this direction and if they do it right, they could lead the market and make alot of people happy...XT engines for top models(all Wilderness models) , don't let the Forester be a lesser Outback(keep it fully developed) , rethink the CVT , keep developing serious offroad models etc. It isn't the racing direction like the wrx/sti direction...but it is the Outdoors market.

I would "consider" the Outback Wilderness over the Forester Wilderness if it had the smaller infotainment system and offered the HK premium sound system. I do find the Forester's higher interior capacity more useful then longer cargo length of the Outback for our uses though.

The seats maybe comfortable, but the Gloomy Grey and the Death Coffin Black interior colors became popular in 1990. We are sick and tired of those dated colors. When we bought my wife her new Outback last year, we purposefully bought an exterior color so that we could have the Warm Ivory leather interior. I ordered my 11 Rav 4WD Limited new and purposefully bought the Gold exterior so that I could have the Ivory leather interior. We bought our 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4X4 and the only interior color was Gloomy Grey and Coffin Black, so I had it reupholstered in Red and Tan, which matches perfectly with the 2 tone exterior colors

Wasn't the Element the boxy urban vehicle? I don't think it would cut it very far in the wild. And AFAIK, they never offered it in an AWD configuration. There are many alternatives in the market. Namely, the Kia Soul. As far as the Outback vs Forester argument, they are both very capable cars. Many have chosen the Forester to be the better off roader due to its approach angle. I bought the Outback because it was a wagon and quite simply, wagons are cool. It's crazy how much it swallows in the back. I don't like the Forester for the simple fact that it is like any other SUVs on the market. During my commute, I will rarely see another wagon and it's usually another Outback or a Mercedes, Volvo and Audi. Very underrated platform and more love needs to be shown or the wagon.

@@MisterMister5893 It very much did come in AWD and I took mine on forest roads and even the Schafer Trail in Canyonlands National Park. I also drove it across mountain passes that were closed right behind me due to snow. It was pretty capable with the right tires and right driver. 🤷🏼 A newer version with an updated AWD and a bit more clearance would be great.

I have taken it on all sorts of trails, through muddy fields and on icy roads where many a truck was stuck. Mine wasn't even AWD but it never failed to get me to a trail head loaded down with gear. I just ordered the Forester Wilderness hoping it would be a worthy replacement. You're giving me hope!

I bought a 2022 Forester Sport in February. Which I would put between the Element and Forester Wilderness. Not quite as off road capable stock as the Wildernes (obviously) but more so than the Element which already did decent. If I lived closer to places that would actually put the Wilderness trim to work, I would have totally gone for it. Being in KC, I have 8 hours of open interstate just to get to some place worthy of having a Wilderness or Jeep for actual trail driving. But I still have decent camping and off-road capabilties until I hit my warranty. And hopefully by then, I'll live close enough to some place that I can to a lift, tires, and be close enough to use everything when I want.

The Falken Wildpeak AT3s are awesome tires for all 4 seasons. They have excellent snow traction. We average 4-5 feet of snow every winter. Last winter we got 6 feet of snow and the Wildpeaks were awesome tires

Outside of the Forester Wilderness trim, the other Forester trims (Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring) compete with the comparable models from other car brands such as the Toyota RAV 4, and Honda CR-V. The majority of car trims available in the small SUV class of cars are family vehicles and not considered to be speed demons. I just purchased a Forester Limited. I liked it better than the comparable OB trim because of its practicality and size (fits in our garage). I did not care much for the OB infotainment system as was distracting to use while driving compared to using the traditional knobs and buttons in the Forester. It was easier to step into the Forester as opposed to crouching down to enter the OB. The visibility in the Forester was far superior that the OB. My wife stated that the OB visibility was like going to a large-screen movie theater (very good visibility). In comparison, the Forester is like an IMAX theater (excellent visibility).

Yeah idk about the engine. I went from a 2021 Chevy equinox to a 2024 sport forestor and I love the acceleration. I got from 0-30 in 2 secs and it pulls hard and fast. It’s not a fast car overall but acceleration is there.

Worst issue with Subaru is glitchy screen, I had a 2020 forester sport until someone ran me off the road...The only other problem you will have is that the windshield breaks alot..i had two replacements in 1 year. The window repair said they were probably their #1 replacement window and thats all the models..also in rain the eyesight will not pick up the road sometimes..

I bought a 2020 Outback XT turbo; and do like it; I bought my wife a 2021 Forrester Sport, and feel that it is much more smoother to drive , I like it better than my turbo, maybe I’m Just getting old , but the Forrester is just smoother all the way around . The XT is much faster , but not as smooth. I wanted to get my wife a new Forrester Wilderness, but was trying to justify the mileage compared to the Sport, my wife consistantly gets 34-35 mpg

@@ralphkeith2905 i can't speak to the Forester, but with a Luno Air matress there is gobs of room in an Outback. Well over 6' would be totally fine. The Luno website says both vehicles accommodate hoomans up to 6"2, but it's definitely more in the OB

What about the coolant control valve? Have they fix that problem like the 2020 outback? So many outbacks from that years is waiting to get the new part to replace the coolant control valve. I called 5 different dealerships and still can’t find one that have the valve, all told me back order and wait time is two months. Can’t drive, could get the car overheats. Subaru sucks.

I own the Subaru Forester wilderness and I love it. I’m not a turbo engine person, especially with the cvt they just don’t pair well together period. I guarantee you going up steep hills off the beaten path the forester will make it and the outback turbo won’t. Hands down the better and more dependable one is the Forester with the naturally aspirated engine hands down. The turbo and cvt tend to fight each other when it comes to steep inclines and the gear hunting in the turbo is a mess. People that give the forester a hard time for speed are people that miss the mark of the Forester’s true purpose.

First of all, you don’t want the turbo second these cars are not designed for speed demons first and foremost, turbo engines you better change that oil every 5000 miles to keep that turbo healthy second, the turbo gets less gas mileage than the non-turbo third turbo cars and are a higher upkeep than non-turbo I stick to the non-turbo Less headaches plus the turbo, believe it or does not match the CVT transmission that comes with the vehicle with the turbo you get more of a kick in your CVT non Trubo transmission. is a perfect match for the CVT

Jam the same tires on the Forester as the Outback and the Forester ground clearance beats it easily. For my money, the Forester wins out off-road. The Forester is made for off-road performance. I own and love my Forester Wilderness. The Forester has a different CVT and a transmission cooler which helps alot off-road.

Researched this car segment for the last 2 months, my findings, - 5th gen forester rated #1 in safety and readability over all others including RAV, trial hawk, honda and bronco. That said, it has been a long road for Subaru from the CVT , oil consumption, head gasket issues of past generation vehicles. At 6'3, CR just announced the Forester is #1 with tall drivers as well, no surprise as the "green house" visibility is very attractive. All the safety dings can be disabled permanently, with the exception of engine on/off at stop. After market solution will solve that as well. So, I will be picking up my Subaru Forester Wilderness / pearl white next week. Comfortable driving on and off road, safety and readability, looks, honest service advisors that I have visited with during this time, all have pushed me this direction. And finally driving my daughters 2017 Forester premium, sold me on being a Subie owner. Suggested maintenance to ensure long life; 30k diff (F/R) service, 40k CVT Transmission service, and oil changes every 4k. @@ME-gr8hz - one of the first things I installed was to cancel the engine start/stop. Totally worth the $100 price tag and it was a very simple install. Additionally - I made sure to get setup with the Subaru Factory trailer hitch. Enjoy your Wilderness! I love mine!

I am so impressed with what Subaru did with the Forester, and so tired of hearing it only has a 8.5 sec (fastest) time 0-60. The only hit the vehicle takes, and the new gearing deals with it, but some people, focus on the non - issues to make an issue. What color dod you get?

I have the outback wilderness. Be aware the screen is very buggy and slow. When it goes out, and it does regularly, you lose everything. No radio, ac m gps or safety systems. The dealer experience in Northern California is awful. Buying was easy but the service is atrocious. Overall it’s a good car, just don’t expect good service and know the screen will go out while you drive on occasion.

A lot of words and no real off- road comparison! Never call the Outback a “station wagon”. Both cars are compact crossovers with some differences. Both are technically “wagons” by definition. A typical crossover is a raised wagon with AWD.
