This is a 2022 Porsche Taycan UK review conducted by a bloke who has never driven - let alone charged - an electric vehicle before. What could go wrong? Well, as it turns out… quite a lot.

Hands-up if you've got an EV... and, if so, would you ever be tempted to go back to petrol?
@jjmason761
@jjmason761 Год назад
Yes, and will never go back. Most of my journeys are well within the confines of my 300mile+ range so I'm always able to charge comfortably at home. (Which should be the norm for most people). I do travel for work quite often, but I (cringe) look forward to planning my stops so I can grab a coffee, watch some RU-vid or just rest. There's definitely work to do on infrastructure and some compromises to make, but for me they're compromises worth making.
@michaelbear8928
@michaelbear8928 Год назад
Yep got a Tesla Model 3 through work. Very apprehensive when I first took receipt of the EV, the key is planning your journeys etc. wouldn’t go back now if I and honest, and the charging infrastructure is only going to improve. Not to mention the savings in company car tax and charging! Great video by the way!

Had one, Skoda Enyaq. Due to home being refurbed (big project) went from having off street charging to having to use public chargers. Price/availability of those makes such a car totally impractical as you found out in your test. Tesla have a good network but the rest of the infrastructure is laughable. Got rid and now drive our VW Fox (costs less to run fuel wise than the Enyaq) or my 1973 VW Camper. In major cities approx 60% of homes don't have off street parking. You need off street charging, that's before we talk about power capacity to streets and then generation capacity.

Yes. Got a Tesla Model 3 last year and never looked back- would definitely buy EV next time (though maybe not the Tesla). Having a home charger is the game changer- waking up to a full ‘tank’ is the way forward.

I was so excited to see this video in my list today! This time I did something I rarely ever do and made it full screen. Wow! I loved the little skip run you did at the beginning - I can imagine you would have done similar when you found out you'd be doing this review too. You KEPT YOUR STYLE. I don't know if that was easy or hard, but that's fantastic as a reviewer and will lead to more reviews in the future, I'm sure. I would love an EV, but it's probably not going to happen for at least another ten years or so if ever. Still, it's fun to dream. LOVED the colour and I would think for some people, the thrill of finding a charging station might be built into their psyche - like the same people who enjoy doing GeoCaching. A new kind of "hunting and gathering" for the 'modern age'.

I was wondering about all the B-roll until your mention at the end - quite well done. And the AirPods Pro in the front trunk - HA!, wonderfully silly. But overall you brought so much to the table here on the general functionality of the car and the present riskiness of the availability of plug-ins. I didn't know any of this stuff either, and this review was really so typically spot on from you. Bravo. And yeah, I just fell in love w/ that color, of course the whole exterior design was just so clean and simple and yet iconic. Thanks Mark.

The search for charging station reminded me of my grandfather’s advice to always fill up when the tank is less than half. Obviously this comes from days when petrol stations weren’t as common, but I guess it now can be applied to EVs. Would love to see your thoughts on an Ionic 5. Or the Chevy Bolt that is supposed to be more of a budget option.

This was so helpful. I can never have a charging at home option (council flat) so really feared the enforced move to electric cars. But this showed me that I maybe can get one in the future when there are more fast charging stations available (my local Aldi has charging stations). I've always seen electric cars as not for me but maybe in the future it will be.

Great review Mark. I witness one of these shooting up the high street, where I live, early one morning. It was interesting to see your experience with charging stations. The local council here in East Devon have just installed one in the car park. Thinking of the mileage that I would need to do in an EV, 300 miles would be about right to plan in charging etc. The camera system is very similar to the Nissan system which has park assist in this country and, includes Pro Pilot in other countries where autonomous driving is permitted. If I were to get an EV, I suppose it would be from the second-hand market.

Great video Mark. I think we are still in the early days of a charging infrastructure in this country. It will be interesting to see if our current government has the political will to develop it properly. Could I suggest a more mainstream EV, price for the family oriented consumer? Excellent quality video - loved it. 👌 We have an MG ZS EV in addition to our old and over-worked (but very trustworthy) Volvo estate. Range anxiety is definitely an issue and, in hindsight, we should've gone for a car with a longer range as we really can't go anywhere and actually get back home! For example, we've needed to do 110 mile round trips but as there are no EV chargers anywhere near the destination we end up taking the Volvo instead. If the government is serious about people moving over to EVs they need to put shed-loads of investment into the charging infrastructure. Oh, and I hate the colour of that Porsche!!!! 😛

Tesla Model Y. The Tesla supercharger network is superior in reliability and all Tesla’s put the charge port in the left-rear side taillight. In Europe, Tesla can use any CCS charger, but Tesla’s own superchargers are excellent and consistently 72 kW urban and 250 kW highway in most recent locations.

Really nice video. A very nice car. At the moment EV is not right as this having to plug in for ages at a plug in station is a right pain. Hence why once an EV is fully self charging only then is it worth purchasing. It would be currently best to buy a self charging hybrid Electric car at least if you run out of charge you can switch to petrol then at your leisure have the car charged electrically.

Any Tesla, to provide a review of charging options for Tesla vs non-Tesla. Perhaps a Model S Tesla to compare your driving experience with the Porche. In a few years, when it will presumably be available in the U.K., an Aptera review would be sweet. BTW, loved this review.... Hey Mark. I own a Tesla Model 3 Performance (a 2021 model I took delivery of in December of 2020). Most EV charging happens at home. I had an electrician install a 240 volt (NEMA 14-50) in my garage which is significantly faster then a standard outlet of course. For daily needs, I charge my car to 75-80% to be gentle on the battery. When I do want to go on a road trip, I charge it up to 100% only for those times. I have driven the car on a near cross country trip from Ohio to California's Napa Valley and had zero issues. This is where Tesla has a big advantage, their charging network. You should really test out a Tesla. To answer your question, would I go back to gasoline? No way!! The next thing I want to do is get solar panels so I can power my car for free. =)

Beautiful photography, particularly the drone footage. I know a lot more about cars than I do about Apple tech and have watched thousands of video car reviews. You've done very nicely with this one, Mark. 🙂 The vast majority of people -- something over 90% -- travel less than 100 miles a day in the US. It's probably a higher percentage in the UK. If one has a charger installed in their home, there is rarely a need to charge anywhere but the comfort of one's own garage overnight. Going a longer distance, the issues you bring up are certainly ones to be concerned with. I'm waiting for the news headline one day when two EV owners get into an argument over hogging a charger and they come to blows or even worse. It's going to take many years before the infrastructure is in place to make the annoyances of not enough chargers, non-functional chargers, and inadequate access to chargers mostly go away. Oh, how about reviewing a Volkswagen ID4 if you can?

The problem is not the cars, it's the charging infrastructure. These days only a minority of people drive around in EV's, and already, you seemed to have had a lot of curve balls thrown at you when it came to charging. Not to speak of the massive extra strain on the electrical infrastructure in the (near) future. Not sure if the governments have these things really on their radar. In Holland for instance, certain regions have already capped the max amount of charging stations just because the current infrastructure can't handle any more. I'm all in for EV's, but many countries have to step up their game when it comes to charging these cars.
