The 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S can do 0-60 in 3.7secs & 0-100mph in just 8.5secs but what’s it like to live with Porsche's first production electric car and what happens when you try to charge it away from home on one of the new generation pay as you go Instavolt fast chargers? Find out here..

He's an adorable little fella, very like my second born. My son would always sit up front with me whilst his brother was at school. He was only 3 at this time and would give me directions and we'd play observational games. Many years ago I was motoring along near home when a car, which I was following from a distance, and gaining upon and fully intended to overtake, suddenly went to turn right into a factory yard, with no indication other than his brake lights as he turned. I quickly stamped on the brakes and on off, on off so as to retain some control and aimed my car to fit in between the grass verge with sign post, street lamp post and hopefully not hit anything. I was going over the limit though and so my car did lock up and my son was excitedly squealing "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" and I eventually halted very closely to a speed limit order sign with my engine still running. I sat for a couple of seconds just gathering myself, I put my hand on little Eddie's knee and said "Are you alright, Ed?" And he replied "Yeeah can we do it again Mummy?" It put a massive smile on my face, my fearless son (he's 23 now). I went back the next day and saw I'd left masses of rubber from my tyres and thankfully that following week the roads were surface dressed with tar and loose gravel. I'd have had no control of where I stopped if they'd already top dressed it before my lock up.

Govt have said all new chargers need to take contactless which is nice. Other chargers I've tried with contactless are still more hassle than Instavolt though. I don't know why they think they need me to go though some stupid menu. There's only two steps involved - plugging in and tapping the card. If I have to do any more than that it's a failure of user interface design.

As a Taycan owner who watches most of the RU-vid videos on this topic, Harry's review is one of the best. A few comments. (1) Range is dependent on many factors, and in the Taycan, regenerative braking is disabled for a few hundred miles in new cars to ensure brake bed-in. The range calculator also learns from your driving behavior. Harry reported range through two charging cycles, which is well within these limitations. (2) Harry's video has a constant level of road noise throughout. Note that the optional thermal and sound insulated glass option gives the Taycan possibly the quietest car interior ever made. (3) Cargo capacity is improved by the roof rack mounting system available with the panoramic glass roof. This system is compatible with Thule components, such as bicycle, cargo, and canoe mounts. Note also that the seats fold down, and with the optional center rear seat, there is a ski pass-through fold down between two rear seat occupants. The outer rear seats have child seat attachment points as Harry demonstrated. (4) The interior refinement that Harry comments upon is upgradeable to the point that the Porsche Taycan won the World Luxury Car of the Year award for 2020. In the UK, tax incentives for electric vehicle lease or purchase penalize the purchase of options, so we see extremely frugally optioned Taycans in UK reviews that are lacking in interior refinement.

Great entertaining video as always from Harry. Thanks for that. I have had Taycan 4S with smaller battery now little more than 3 months. Beautiful car, enjoyed every moment! Couple of more good things what I can add when driving car quite a cold weather in Finland lately. To charge fast and not to increase consumption you need to use heating systems before you go. Easy to use through app. You can see battery temperature from the gauges and when its less than +10C the charging speed as well as consumption is worse than promised until then temperature increase. More than +20C battery temperature and you will get those numbers as promised. I have driven now +8000km and average consumption is 19,4kWh/100 km ~400km range. Not bad. Also as this small battery Taycan is 150kg less weight than Turbo S, I'm more than happy not to tick the big battery option. Many others I did instead. Cheers!

Insta are great (they and polar are all I use) and if they had eked out a 300 mile range (in lieu of a lack of tesla super charger speed and convenience- in the uk ) they have hit the sweet spot. Right now, in the uk, a small £35k 250 mile range - ie Hyundai kona is the sweet spot if you don’t want a M3 - tesla Does 95% of what you need.

Better range will improve things, but in reality, most people would manage 95% of the time with a car that had a real-life range of 150 miles. You’ve nailed the pluses and minuses perfectly Harry. I couldn’t get over how terrible the packaging is for a taller (6’2”) gent like myself. The worst was how hard it was to wedge myself between the steering wheel and b pillar. It was pretty poor, to be honest. And the interior space is tighter than my Model 3. When my Model 3 was totaled earlier this year, I had a choice to make. I came close to ordering a Taycan 4S, but for the same price, I got a Model 3 Performance AND a 25k mile 997 Turbo S. The depreciation on a Taycan is likely to be eye watering. And to be honest, although it goes down the road and feels like a Porsche, it doesn’t shade the Model 3 nearly as much as I thought it would. Add in the aSupercharging network and I passed on the Porsche. Yeah, I miss not having that beautiful build quality in my daily driver. And the Porsche ride / handling. But when I get in my 997 Turbo, that seems to all fade...

Well, I have to say I like the look of it despite the impracticalities of the limited storage space. I also quite like the sound of this one. It reminds me of the overdubbed mock-up cars used in the UFO TV series from the early '70's. It appears they've certainly nailed the ease of charging, it couldn't get much easier. If the reduced charge rate was down to the two other vehicles charging at the same station it just highlights the infrastructure and power generation problem they're going to have to address if electric cars are to become the norm. The development of electric car tech is really taking off and will only increase as more and more manufacturers come onboard. The revised new petrol/diesel ban is just over 9 years away now but it's exciting to think what the full electric options will be by then.

£2.50 for 23 miles of charge is shocking. Combine that with the low availability of charging stations and lengthy charge times (compared to petrol) and I still don’t see any incentive to go electric, especially away from cities.

"Why has it taken so long" exactly Harry, good to hear Instavolt have got it right. As far as Teslaesque goes (a) the Tesla Supercharger would have been on the sat nav along with confirmation of bays free which as you know would you never have to wait with Tesla. (b) Charging would have been easily twice as fast, there is a lot of integration between charger and car, there's gonna be, they make both. Impressed with your thoughts on the Porsche Taycan, of course Im biased Tesla Model S owner but mountain bikes chucked in the back and used to Tesla huge range and low price.
@blxtothis
@blxtothis 3 года назад
But there's the Tesla build quality elephant in the room, otherwise I'd agree that the Porsche is a rich man's posing pouch whereas a Model S is a rich man's practical electric solution with change to spare. Let's face it though, all EVs are just too danged expensive and all have some compromise or the other. Me, I'm waiting for a Searl Effect Generator powered vehicle, now if only that was factual, one could plug it into your house when not driving to do away with mains electricty and gas for power. Some dream that would be.

@@blxtothis Build quality yes totally agree. Im 38 years engineering in big auto throughout the world so get to see the true story first hand, the fundamental architecture of the car is wrong with an internal combustion engine, this you realise when using an electric car especially an electric performance car. In terms of expense I agree initial up front cost is high however this will drop next 3 years and my Tesla P85 was bought to be used for 10 years its now 6 years old 100,000 miles has better reliability than any of my precious cars and has paid for itself in running and service coast by 150,000 miles.
