2022 Specialized Allez Sprint review

There's a new Allez Sprint on the block. And the unapologetically race focussed aluminum platform has arrived at a time when criterium racing is once again bursting with interest.
First introduced in 2015, the original Allez Sprint quickly became a bike with a cult-like following amongst Red Hook racers with its combination of aero tube profiles, a stiff structure, aggressive geometry, and an attainable price point.
The new 2022 Allez Sprint doesn’t stray too far from that original recipe, but it's a wholly revised machine, and now an effective replica of the company’s flagship Tarmac SL7 race bike. And what comes without surprise, it’s disc-only.
Our Australia-based Senior Tech Editor Dave Rome has been riding and wrenching on the new Allez Sprint over the past fortnight, just enough time to get a good understanding of what the new alloy race bike excels at and where it doesn’t. This review covers what’s new, the technical details to know, and how it performs.

Insane prices. Got my 2020 Allez Sprint with 105 for $1900. Still a lot of coin for alloy/105 but I race criteriums. They jacked up the price by $1100!! These price increases are becoming just stupid.

Things I like: -bottom bracket area looks mint. Stiff and simple, just like your husband. 😉 -paint is badass as per usual -good clearance for some big ass wheels and tires -simple seat clamp -looks "aero enough" (though I thought it was "everything") Things I hate: -"most complex headtube" is the laziest piece of marketing. If there is nothing better than that about it why hilight it? -internal cabling is cool, but the I wish they had carried over the shrouded way they did it on the sl7, or at least tucked it under the stem better. -killing off a alot of the aero shaping is starting to converge everything back to the one sl7 shape and seems like a bid to reduce SKUs and navigate supply chain issues rather than make a better individual bike. The upside of this is being to more readily get replacement parts. -price is a bit higher for the basics but I guess that's everything now. Overall a good effort and sure that people who buy it will enjoy, but nothing about this shows us the future of practical race bikes, kinda disappointed tbh. I'm so grateful to have my 2020 Venge and Allez!

Everyone hating here didn’t race/ride the original Allez Sprint. Even if it’s „only“ as good as the old allez sprint I would be more than happy to pay for the frame at 1700USD. The original allez sprint is hands down my fave bike ever - and I own an Sworks SL7. The often called „harsh“ ride quality makes it SUPER fun and agile. It’s not faster than carbon but certainly feels like it. I can’t wait to test ride this new version even though I am sad to see there is no more rim brake :(

I'm eager to test ride this new one on my next day off.

There’s no way that a Allez is that much heavier. I called specialized and they told me that the S works SL7 weighs 1.69 kg and the regular SL7 is 1.87 kg both in a 56. But the Allez frame set weighs 1.5 kg but that is in a 54. The representative did not have numbers for a 56 but he estimated that it would be around 1.9 kg. So the Allez does not weigh .5 kg heavier than the tarmac but rather it weighs approximately .2 to.1 kilograms heavier than the tarmac SL7. so if you are that concerned about weight, you could get the aluminum frame and become a weight weenie and get it to the same weight as the carbon SL7 with no problem. And by the way, add a much cheaper price where are you don’t have to worry about replacing the frame when you crash. Even with crash replacement, you still have to come up with $3000.

Allez Sprint LTD - SRAM Force eTap AXS 1x 7500€ in germany. If the bicycle industry continues like this, it could be that many companies will soon go down the drain. They just set ridiculous prices ONLY. See Ultegra Di2 12-speed and co. I also have to say that I have owned a relatively large number of bikes, but it has never been as bad as the workmanship is at the moment. You can buy bikes that are over 5k euros and they are then processed like a hardware store bike. Alone design errors with fork shafts and Co. It's 2022, end customers have been buying carbon bicycles for well over 20 years. And the manufacturers are still not able to build well-made carbon frames. 3K for an aluminum bike with mid level parts and no internal routing is stupid. What’s even worse is we’ll be seeing these frames on FB marketplace for double the retail price

If you call this external routing, chances are, you've never seen a generic steel road bike (and my aluminium bike) before.

Aluminum why? If its so awesome why do you need a carbon seat post, carbon fork , carbon rims?
@yonglingng5640
@yonglingng5640 2 года назад
Aluminium is more resilient when it comes to impact-resistance. This is why you may have heard some riders swear by aluminium cockpits.

Short answer, yes. At least it's slightly easier on the wallet, but still, not cheap by any means.

This bike looks great but the price doesn't make sense. At $3,000 for a 105 bike, it should be under 8kg. Instead is is basically 9kg

No rim brakes, no buying for me. Disc brakes ruined the look, the weight and the aerodynamic of the bicycles.

Sorry... frame set builds are cost prohibitive. Specialized knows this, which is why they price their frames w/ zero financial breaks in mind. In fact... frame up builds often cost more than a complete bike, which makes zero sense.
@yonglingng5640
@yonglingng5640 Год назад
The thing with frame-up builds is you get the exact spec you want right from the get-go. A saddle that fits you, the right handlebar width, the right stem length, your ideal crankarm length and a lot more. I never settle with factory-specced bikes shortly after I started cycling, where my first bike wasn't even a road bike. There'll always be something to change on such a bike.

@OM-sb2bd

Did Specialize bribe every road cycling reviewer?? Perhaps you haven’t noticed that the massive welds near the head tube have been universally panned as hideous? That an aluminum size 56 frame with no pedals weighing over 19 pounds isn’t desirable to many? That $3k for an aluminum 105 group set with a mediocre-at-best stock wheelset is actually too expensive for what you get? Does this mean that the bike is bad? No! But missing these big picture points is annoying dude …
@OM-sb2bd
@OM-sb2bd 2 года назад
@D. W. I just mean that these 3 points I’ve seen raised by many folks-and aside from the price point, the chunky welds are a close second in complaints. But like I wrote, doesn’t mean it’s not a nice bike. No doubt it’s got a lot going for it. Just would be nice to see the reviewers say what Joe Public is thinking, too.

@MobileCabinWorks
@MobileCabinWorks 2 года назад
@D. W. Funny. I’ve worked in the cycling industry for almost 10 years now, for a large IBD, and Specialized will barely supply us with shit. Customers are forced/coerced into using their direct to consumer market place and keeping almost all the profit of what would be an in store bike sale for themselves. You’re working awfully hard defending a half billion dollar cooperation who ultimately doesn’t care about you. Hope you’re getting paid for it. Specialized certainly isn’t helping the independent bike shop employee get paid anymore.
