‪@TheTopher‬ threw us the keys to his personal Subaru BRZ for some very important testing. The question here is will swapping a 4.30 differential into your BRZ greatly affect your MPG. The numbers were close, but results were different!

Should have done a 0-60 and 1/4 mile test with the stock 4.10 vs 4.30 gear

I'd like to imagine the conversation between Topher and Chris went something like this "Hey Chris, would you like to take my BRZ for a drive? Oh and I've got an idea for you too, how about doing a fuel economy run video for DM?" But really he just wanted you to do the experiment so he didn't oh and he got you to fuel it up too 🤣

I'm impressed how quickly you installed a new rear differential. 😊

I always used to run 35 psi before I switched to stickier rubber. If you want your expensive rubber to work well you gotta run lower PSI. 33 is actually on the higher end of spectrum. When the weather warms up I'll be dropping closer to 30 psi. Sure you take a hit in MPG because of the rolling resistance but the grip and contact patch are worth it. Ultimately if were getting better tires you get them for the performance not the gas mileage.

Not to mention...if I run 35 psi the centers of the tires wear out faster than the outer sections...on a similar car.

So happy for this video!!! Finally got a GR86 MT allocated, currently on the boat crossing the ocean, and after seeing Topher describe the 4.3 I've definitely been considering it, but was worried about the MPG change! Seems like I might wait until I can make it my second car instead of a daily... Curious why you went with the readout MPG instead of the calculated one? My thought would be that the readout isn't accurate as the car's computer isn't taking the 4.3 diff into account when doing the math. Did Topher tune it to read accurately? If the speed is slightly off with the new diff then it might be the ECU needs to be tuned to calculate everything right, could lead to a discrepancy if not

Out west, often the speed limit is 80 mph. I typically go 7-8 over. So what kind of mileage and rpm does this thing get at a steady 87 mph ?

Can you please do a little audio leveling if it's not too much trouble? The music is much louder than Chris talking..

The wheel tire combo is so ugly I still can't believe it but at least the performance of the parts is there.

I don't know. I'm leaning more towards taking the pump number. At the end of the day, the pump is where you're gonna have to pay. Also the car ECU might not know it's got different ratio now.
@sshah2545
@sshah2545 Год назад
The car is not processing fuel burn based on final drive ratio from the diff.. it's calculating distance covered vs fuel remaining and simultaneously delivering MPG and range. The same applies to installing new tires, or anything else to the vehicle that will impact efficiency. The car simply displays the calculations as a result of whatever mechanical change has occurred.
@seb5945
@seb5945 Год назад
@@sshah2545 So where is the car getting the information about distance traveled? I'm guessing from the wheels. If so, I think different diff won't affect the calculation as long as he's using same size tyres.
@sshah2545
@sshah2545 Год назад
@Seb incorrect again lol. The car is getting information about distance traveled from the engine. That's why when you change the stock wheel size your speedometer is permanently incorrect. Your car is calibrated at the factory. So, say a Subaru BRZ Limited with 18 inch wheels, the car is programmed to calculate that X rotations of the of engine, results in Y rotations of wheels, = Z speed. If you change the wheel size, the car is still using the same X variable, to calculate Z. Which is why if you put winters on, on different sized wheels, you literally need to know the offset % so you can know that when the speedo is reading 50mph, your car is actually driving 57... as an example. You're right overall btw. To understand fuel economy, go off the what the gas pump says. But the dude in the video makes valid points. There were reasons why the car might be more accurate, with it's optimistic economy estimate, based on things like sitting behind trucks. But to be clear, the car doesn't, and will never take final drive ratio into account. It is calibrated at the factory. Unless you recalibrate, once you change something, things like the speedo will always be wrong. Fuel economy however is different. But why it's different is what matters.

I know the pump is more accurate for testing because when some pumps are capped at $75/fill, it will count in the thousandths of gallons to get to exactly 75.

Was the new tyre size and doff gearing put through thr computer? If not then the calculations areall based on stock gearing and stock tyres but with that actual information being incorrect
@MarkJCarruthers
@MarkJCarruthers Год назад
Can you explain why you decided to favor the trip computer over the actual fuel used over actual distance?
@occckid123
@occckid123 Год назад
Because for some reason the gas pump is wrong when putting gas in the car sometimes. The amount that goes in isn't always the same. It could be warmer or cooler when refueling. I tested this recently with a toyota sienna. The gas gueage was all wonkey ambit the amount of Miles I got would indicate a 43mpg average did it by hand and got 37mpg. I did it again and again u got 43mpg but this time tmby hand the avg mpg was 43mpg lol. Did it again and go4 42.8mpg and by hand it was 42mpg. I think it was a fluke the 1st time with the vapors or something even though I filled until I can see the gas

At 3000 RPM a 200 RPM difference is about 6.7%, and if you multiply this by 32.5 MPG there is your 2.2MPG delta, presuming the extra rotations of the engine translate directly to extra fuel that's being squirted into the cylinders. I don't think the physics can be argued with, so saying at the end of the presentation that there was no impact was not very accurate. If you could re-program the engine computer and account for the different rear axle ratio then I'd bet you a beer it would have displayed a lower MPG number. Just my $0.02.

Your ac wasn't engaged nearly as much with that lower ambient air temp. There's 10% mpg alone. Not an accurate, should have had the ac off on both tests

While the fuel economy is interesting, shorter gearing should always increase fuel economy at highway speeds. I think the the benefit, or not , to performance is the question on most people's minds. Any info regarding that?

This is sooooo misleading. 1) just go with the trip computer (but literally the amount of gas he put in is telling him the opposite). 2) he drove the 4.3 diff in 30 degree cooler weather - cold air has more oxygen and the engine runs more efficiently 3) building on #2, because it was 83 degree outside when he drove the 4.1, the ac condenser was on to cool the cabin vs 4.3 the cabin was being warmed up and thus ac didn’t put a load on the engine.

Your mpg tests make no sense to me. There is no way that one can refill a tank just once and get a correct figure. You need to average several tanks of fuel. I own a 2015 Scion FRS....It has a smaller engine and a final drive ratio for less power, yet optimized for better fuel economy than the 2022 and newer 86 and BRZ. Despite that, I have never gotten mileage figures anywhere near the figures you claim.

Not the wheels. Enkei rpf1 looks great on most cars. It’s the fact that he went with a really meaty tire setup.
