246k miles isn't THAT MUCH in my opinion. Once you get to 350k+ with the original engine and transmission, then it starts to be really impressive. My '07 Accord has 225k and runs like a clock. My father's '03 MDX has 390k miles and it's still going strong. Gotta love Toyota and Honda.

I own a '15 TRD Pro -- previously owned a '03 4Runner Sport (bought brand new) that I traded for a '11 Limited,...that I traded for the TRD Pro. I do love my current ride but watching you do the compare with your '06 makes me miss my 4th gen. I still feel the overall build quality of the 4th gens were/are better. Good stuff -- 4Runner's are so good.

I would take the older one in a heartbeat. The price of the new one for what you get is just silly. I know it is a great car and they are very popular in my town, but for that money, I want something more up-to-date and better mpg with the current increase in gas prices.

@@skoolynugenator1802 if reliability was rare I’d understand the argument. Between me and my wife, I’ve gone through close to 10 vehicles the last 6 years. Being a reliable vehicle shouldn’t be a standout, it’s expected

@@mattwilcox8134 close to 10 vehicles in 10 years. That tells me you ain’t putting half million miles on these cars. That’s what I’m talking about. If you want to keep a vehicle forever and not keep hopping from vehicle payment to vehicle payment, you’ll get reliability with a 4Runner. Any vehicle can be fairly reliable after 75k miles. Who cares? I want one that can last minimum of 300k without any issue. And also hold its value which the 4Runner does better than almost everything.

The tried and true 4th and 5th gen 4runners, on top of all of the other fantastic generations. These have proven to be a great purchase on the used car market, trouble free, capable family vehicles. Yes it is getting older, it still looks great in my opinion. At least you can depend on the engineering underneath, some of these new power trains are getting extremely over-engineered. Great review, thanks!

Chris & Chris, For decades the 4Runner has been the top 4X4 for QDR and longevity. For the price they charge, they should put a locking rear diff in all 4Runners and a manual should be an option as it is on the Wrangler and Bronco. Going forward, I would like to see Toyota bring back an entry level 4X4 to compete with the cheapest Jeep and Bronco. If a basic, 2 door Prado is good enough for M__ W__son, it should be good enough for us 😉

On my 06 4runner V8, both traction control and stability control are *fully* disabled when center diff is locked. I then added another lighted push button and a simple logic controller (can be done with a two way switch) which fools it into thinking I've locked the center diff even when I haven't, which has the same effect. Either way I can spin all 4 tires and do donuts at will. The one thing I can't disable is that stupid panic stopping ABS mode it does when you jam on the brake pedal fast, or brake hard while turning (even on pavement). Makes it impossible to modulate the brake pedal. Touch it, and it's braking at 100%. That crap annoys the hell out of me.

I hunt once a year in Texas and we do some light off roading in my dads truck. I also am finally in a financial position to responsibly and comfortably obtain a “higher echelon” vehicle. I have two routes to go and I’m hung up on a.) keep the brz as a weekend warrior and get a 4Runner or Gx460 or b.) trade up for an M3 or 6mt S4 I know this is a decision that is entirely dependent on someone’s personal situation but as someone with direct experience with option A mentioned above, and the fact that you have driven so many different vehicles, you would have as good of a perspective as anyone could have. If you can find an older one with relatively good miles and a V8 for a good price it's worth it. However, that's called a unicorn. And with the chip shortage, production halted of vehicles at many companies, etc I don't see the prices of used 4Runners dropping for at least a year or so. I mean I've seen 2016 SR5 128k miles for $28,500+. People say the prices are absurd, but the market is limited. The 90s and later 00s cash for clunkers programs in the US destroyed the used car market. And while this may be an enthusiast vehicle to many it's still one of the most reliable vehicles in history. Most of the vehicles ahead of it in terms of reliability are Toyotas. For most of us these cars are 15-20 year investments unlike many other competitors. I mean honestly lets look where the new Broncos are in 15 years. Most buyers will have sold to "upgrade". That's $43,000 for a new Bronco divided by a generous 6 year ownership to be roughly $7,166 per year + repair and maintenance costs (which from experience will be a lot) vs owning a 4Runner a minimum of 15 years with proper maintenance purchased at $55,000 would be $3,666 each year + maintenance and repair costs. Those bills will be lower if up kept properly. As a former 2nd gen Explorer owner I don't trust Ford like I do Toyota. Ford's the best American brand imo and properly better long term than most European brands (especially post-warranty). However, Toyota and Honda are the kings of longevity and reliability with proper maintenance.

PS. Fuel economy doesn't matter when you're slamming the pedal to the floor. And with the way many Americans drive the fuel economy numbers are joke to bring up. And yes, in the TRD Pro you have to do that switch. However, if you're willing to spend the extra money you can get a Limited and upgrade it since it's full time 4WD. And I think SC would give Michigan a run for its money in the pot hole competition.

Big plus of the 4th gen v8 is the all time 4wd which the 5th gen doensn't have (I think you get it on the limited trim but not sure).
@johnwebb2232
@johnwebb2232 Год назад
true, but more moving parts on the all time 4wd, at least with the 5th gen you have the option of rear wheel or 4wd, both have their advantages and disadvantages, i'll stick with my 2016 trail with KDSS, love my 4runner.

The only problem i dont like about the V8 is that its a timing belt vs the v6 timing chain. This for me is a deal breaker
@mattbrown942
@mattbrown942 2 года назад
Shouldn’t be a deal breaker. It only needs to be replaced like every 100-110k miles so if you have it for 15-20 years you’ll maybe have to do it twice
@tempestofruin
@tempestofruin 2 года назад
@@mattbrown942 all depends on how much you drive it. I still would personally not have to do it. Plus a v6 for my use is plenty

These vehicles are built to last 1 Million miles, so the older one is a better deal.

I live in the Detroit metro area, around redford, Livonia and oh my gawd the potholes are Horrible!. I mean they've always been bad but with all the snow and ice we've been getting then it raining and getting warm then snowing again with cold weather it expanded and cracked the roads so badly. It feels like your running away and dodging bombs dropping down. It almost feels like my tax dollars are going in politicians pockets and nowhere else🤔

I live in Flat Rock, and the already bad Gibraltar Rd got even worse after the last heavy snow and melt. Heavy truck traffic on that stretch of road tears it up. People were complaining so much on a city Facebook page and tagging the mayor in it, that the holes got patched up one day like magic. Lol

not really a fan of the 4th gen how it looks. IMO. I like more of the 3rd gen style and i feel they kinda brought that look back on the 5th gen. reasons to why im loving the 5th gen how it looks alot. if you put the 3rd gen and 5th gen side to side. youll see the resemblance and be like oh yea thats the old 4runner and the new 4runner. And the 3rd gen has the side exhaust just like how they have it on the 5th. When you put the 5th and 4th together like this. It just looks like you're putting the 5th gen next to a bigger bubbly rav4 lol :P the 5th gen is better.

Do a quarter mile run so we will know w/c is faster quicker off the light V8 260hp or V6 270hp!!! Driving and talking does not really do justice. We need 1/4 mile time.

Rather have an older Toyota. TRD Pro is nothing but a 10k+ status symbol option easily achievable with Icon, OME, or Dobinson.
