Such a great interview! The discussion of COVID-19 as an essay topic was a useful example of how to approach a common topic in a way that is still exciting and unique! Also, Melia's enthusiasm made me want to read undergraduate applications :D

I did a lot of high-school community service, but not a lot in community college. Would you recommend I mention those in HS or only those in CC ?
@CollegeCareerChamp

Great question! College usually do NOT ask you about your high school accomplishments, only your current college record. However, if you have a job, research, leadership activities that originated in high school and continue throughout community college, you certainly can include those.

Do UCs look at ACT/SAT score if they are test blind? Can I not submit my scores?
@CollegeCareerChamp
@CollegeCareerChamp 2 года назад
Hi Maximo, the UC system is test blind so you do NOT need to submit your ACT or SAT scores. There are other schools outside the UC system that are test optional or preferred which I recommend you take and only send in if you get a competitive score relative to the school. You can see the average test scores of previous admitted students for that school usually on their college website or US News/Naviance.

what percentage of applicants apply to UC schools as "undecided"?
@CollegeCareerChamp
@CollegeCareerChamp Год назад
Depends on the college campus but it can be anywhere from 20-35%. Undecided can still be within the targeted major. Example: Undeclared Engineering, Undeclared Life Sciences. UC Davis has an article here to read more about: www.ucdavis.edu/majors/undeclared-exploratory-sciences/what-can-i-do-with-undeclared-exploratory-sciences-major

Are AP Scores a major factor during UC admissions?
@CollegeCareerChamp
@CollegeCareerChamp 2 года назад
This is from the UC system website: Although the College Board reports all AP test results to us, students should be aware AP test scores lower than 3 will not adversely affect their chances for admission.

Is it true that it’s harder to get into the uc’s as a California resident?
@CollegeCareerChamp
@CollegeCareerChamp 2 года назад
From the UC admissions point of view there is not much difference of in -state vs out-of-state. Here is more info: admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/admission-requirements/freshman-requirements/out-of-state-students.html From my perspective, each UC is different in what their priorities are for the year. Some schools may want more funding so out-of-state tuition would be more helpful in achieving their goals since out-of -state students usually need to pay an extra fee. However, even though the acceptance rate for certain schools may be higher for out-of-state students, it is not necessarily easier since the N count of in-state students usually outweighs out of state.

out of state admission rates are about 25% higher, but there's 3x more instate applicants

Do Ucs admit based on major??
@CollegeCareerChamp
@CollegeCareerChamp Год назад
Great question, there's a max amount of students they can allow acceptance based on majors (most impacted are Biology/pre-med, Computer Science, Business). If one of the popular majors are your intended choice, you should be strategic based on your GPA, extracurriculars, essays. If you think they're not strong enough then choose related alternative majors. Make sure to do thorough research if you like those majors or if they'll allow you to switch majors once accepted. Hope this was helpful :)
