The Taos with all wheel drive is a different animal than the front wheel drive model for a few big reasons. Does this mean it can pull ahead of the Toyota Corolla Cross, Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30 and Subaru Crosstrek? Not entirely.

I own a Taos sel, full spec, cost quite a bit but it has great materials and the the dsg learns how u drive so it become less delay as time goes on. Been a great car

My AWD SEL premium has launch control....I only found out because I had a 2018 Golf R so I thought I'd try it in the Taos....I was shocked..shifts hard too. If you want smooth shifting think of it like a standard transmission you take your foot off the brake put your foot on the gas the clutch is starting to come out don't push the gas too far let the gear engage once the gear engages then hit your gas a little harder and that will smooth everything out just that's all you got to remember it's a standard transmission without a clutch just feather that pedal lightly until that clutch release is first gear and you're gold.

I currently own a Taos SC for motion and I think you hit the nail on the head. I enjoy hooking mine on back roads in my area. I just had an update done to my software on the first of the year. I think it helped the shifting at low speed slightly and it definitely helped with the app.

Update : I have a 2023 SE 4 motion. You can customise the suspension of the car. In eco it has a lot of body roll. I do custom, I put suspension and steering in sport, acceleration in normal or eco. My Lexus didn’t even let me change the suspension.

we leased an se model last year and so far it's been pretty good. once it gave us a change oil message with 1500 miles driven but we had almost full oil. after a few days it went away but goes to show that if you're thinking about long time reliabilty, it might not be the best vehicle to purchase.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 года назад
Sometimes manufacturers recommend oil changes after the first 1000 so maybe it was that but that is odd since i didn't think vw recommended that. Still, I can't see this one being cheap in the long run, I hope I'm proved wrong.
@cabbagehead8082

You should have changed the oil. Some VW require an oil change at 1000 or 1500. Then every 5k. The car knows what it needs more than you. You did a disservice to the car. Cars must be cared for properly if you want them to last

I’m so glad you discovered this has launch control. A lot of people don’t realize almost all modern VWs with a dsg of some sort has hidden factory launch control. My alltrack had it. And so does my GLI. The Taos though is the one you would least expect to have it

So, here’s a little trick I discovered on AWD SE. First of all I realized it’s a “smart” transmission, and has learned how I drive, and has gotten much smoother the more I drove. But the cool thing I like.....if you put the transmission in manual, and without touching the shifter, floored from a stop the car will launch itself and upshift on its own just past 5000 rpms to 2nd and again to 3rd. (Yeah, it kinda sucks that it not REALLY manual) BUT...the shifts are lightning fast, faster than in any other mode, and I have shamed several much more powerful vehicles. Partly the element of surprise, but also 0-80kms its almost unbeatable, of course then above that, I quickly get my ass kicked. But big fun at first. Try it!

I’ve been stuck with an SE AWD Taos as a loaner while my id4 is getting repaired and I can’t stand the first gear. Glad you mentioned how bad it is. The first gear is also super jumpy - it goes nowhere at first and if you push slightly harder it’s like defcon 5. I also hate that it doesn’t let you downshift (manually) if it thinks it will be revving “too high.”

I think this is a product that is well thought for the US of A., and a good package. But selling this as a replacement for the Golf seems a bit odd from VW's part. I know the Golf wasn't selling at all in the US, but here in Canada, it was a different story and we will for sure miss it!
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 года назад
Yeah, they did build a good competitor for the US market. I agree, especially in front wheel drive form, the old mk 7 golf felt like a car built to higher standards that was far more entertaining to drive. It's unfortunate they took it away from you guys!? I didn't even know that.

Great review, but I bought the S model with 4MOTION and the IQ package for under 28k addition the Taos has special things that can grow on you, it drives secure on the road and off road the 4MOTION has great traction and if you want it more capable off road you can check out the base camp lift kid for this SUV, it will give you a 1.5 inch lift for under $500 I am learning to love this vehicle, because it's different than others on the driving dynamics. Regarding the recall that was long fixed for the newest models after 12/21 the 22 do not have that issue

I have been trying to find car reviews by tall people and this is pretty close. As a tall driver do Head up displays work for you or is the angle wrong? I have never been in a car with one myself. I think the chunk of bad road you regularly use is a great thing to have in a test video. Maybe having a segment with stop and go traffic and highway cruising to show some of autonomous cruise control and lane centering would be helpful.
@Realistick

Good question, I've never had much trouble with them actually. Maybe it's because I can usually lower the seat enough to wear it isn't an issue. I know audis allow you to adjust the HUD and I think other brands do that too but I haven't needed to do that.

I agree, going up to that range, it really doesn't compare too well unless you just want certain features or a big back seat. However, at the base range with the IQ package, I think it's compelling depending on what you want.

@@Realistick The Taos back seat is definitely bigger and better gas mileage. The Mazda CX5 is cheaper and standard with AWD / Independent suspension. VW N.A got rid of the short wheel base Tiguan and surprise surprise! They needed a small SUV. The quality of this vehicle is so low compared to other SUVs VW produces overseas. I have a ‘16 Tiguan SE 4 motion and I wouldn’t even consider having a Taos over that!

It does have weird proportions. I think we might not be used to a super practical car that is this size and it comes off a little awkward as a result. I'm not sure I can quite pin that on the wheels.
