We review the updated Audi E-Tron, one of the first fully electric vehicles for the brand. Audi took the best parts of their traditional SUV Coupe lineup and converted it to a full EV. We discuss the pros and cons of all of this work and if it is worth the money. Others to consider are Genesis GV60, Tesla Model Y, Mercedes EQE, and Porsche Taycan.

I can relate to him so much more than to any other automotive reviewer. Knowing that there are other people out there who are bothered by what's happening makes it a bit easier to endure, because the norm is that people keep that all locked up out of existential fears, and that is a lived robot world where the human-vs-AI gap is being closed from both sides.

You guys did mention styling. I wish more manufacturers followed Audi in making the EVs look like normal cars. Why does everything need to look like a flipping spaceship?

The Ford F150 looks like a normal truck. The BMW i40 looks like any other BMW sedan. The Genesis G80 electric looks just like the Genesis G80. A lot of EVs don't look like spaceships and look like cars. I don't think the Mach E from ford looks like a spaceship. It looks like a coupe SUV. And Hyundai's Ioniq 5 looks like a retro Lancia Delta in its overall shape. There is plenty variety of EV car shapes.

It's why im buying a BMW I4 instead of a Tesla model 3 or Polstar. BMW and Audi are doing excellent jobs of making EVs stylish but not gaudy.

@@SaltyPenguin255 Polestars aren't gaudy. They're understated. Teslas are just aerodynamic and not really gaudy. If anything, BMWs border on gaudy. I just think BMWs are the better car. Polestar are also excellent, very solid. Teslas are more tech focused but lack the solidity and refinement of the Euros IMO.

I really liked the interior having a bit of color for once. Almost every Audi I've seen has black on black and almost imo comes off as "boring" even if that's what their target audience prefers.

They like Boring? Id agree. The outside looks boring too. There is nothing about the brand that pulls me anymore. Just basic bich german. VW too... its like they are flying blind over there. BMW has some direction if a bit odd, Porsche is fine, but Audi and VW are ugh.

I bought one of these used, and love that it doesn't differentiate itself as an electric vehicle or look like a spaceship. Most people walk up to it and don't realize it's an EV. This "soulless luxury box" works for me, except that the software is crap and crashes all the time. Screens go blank, and you'll get warnings that your safety features are disabled until you "reboot" it. I use its ground clearance to get to my wildlands fire volunteer projects (burned out rutted roads) and its cargo space for my house projects--I treat it very much as a working car, not a luxury car. Agree on all points re: range. I'm glad I bought it used, but am already itching for more range. Nice job.

Tricky situation for you guys. As much as I hope "because this is Savagegeese we are the last to get it etc" doesn't become a norm, I understand it. I wish you had more subscribers for how great your channel is and the manufacturers took better notice. Perhaps your honesty and technical deep dive is what holds some back. For example Honda and generally Mazda provide great support and info, while others (like the Germans) generally snub you. When it comes to me wanting technical depth, it's Savagegeese all the way, when I need humor it's Throttle House. Between the two my bases are mostly covered, keep it up!!

Great video as always. I'm an Audi fan, I own an etron and agree with everything said in this video about the current e-torn. Although, I'm surprised you guys did not mention the facelift model (renamed Q8 e-tron) that's coming next year which Audi revealed/announced last month that will have 300+ mile range. Side note: I wish you guys did more videos on Audi vehicles, particularly the RS models.

Bleh, Audi keeps trying to get me to go to their events, but when my A4 Avant 6mt was so much better to drive than their RS3 auto box I'm not showing up. I drove the e-tron and it was amazing how overweight, under utility it was. My dog doesn't want to be in that cut off boot. Get a hot hatch and leave this overpriced crap to the idiots.

​@@jakesnake1793 The existence of this video is baffling to me since Audi has always seemed actively disinterested in marketing the E-Tron and they have now pushed this out to coincide with a 3-year refresh that is, to my eye, basically imperceptible. Not only that, but they're now marketing it to this channel, where even I would have predicted that Mark might lose consciousness during the driving segment (thank you Jack, for getting behind the wheel and saving a life this week). Why does this exist?

I just bought a used 2019 Prestige for $31k after I had a car totalled in an accident and wasnt prepared to spend in the car market. I love this car and they are a great purchase rn. Same interior and body as the 2023, but the grille is the difference and $30-40k less.

E-tron is unique among all of the EVs in having two induction motors which means it can coast (yes, iX uses externally excited motors, the difference is that iX has wearable parts in them) and a 5700 pound car coasts really well. Taking advantage of that with some awareness of traffic and terrain, I’m routinely seeing around 3 mi/kWh on my 35-65 mph commute which translates to 260+ miles of range, the same as real-world Model Y LR. I got mine before the prices went crazy and with tax credits it cost me less than a Model Y for an actual really nice car.

The difference is the real world Model Y has a 75kw-81kw battery size depending on the year/model. It’s much more efficient than the Audi…That said, having owned a Model Y and shopped the e-tron first (until they had the fire issue with the wiring in the very beginning), the etron drives 1000x better than the Y in every way except 0-60. My Model Y drove like it had no shock absorbers. I’d run over worms and feel it in my teeth…got rid of it after 8 months…thankfully it was right around when COVID hit, so made 9k on it! Audi has to work on their efficiency tech. They are 10 years behind TESLA on it (as is everyone else unfortunately)….

@@petegalindez9961 e-Tron battery is only 87 kW usable, not that much bigger. When Car and Driver tested 2020 MYLR, they got 94 mpge which is 2.8 mi/kWh. I get… the same. My point is that when you consider real-world performance, “220 mile” cars like e-Tron and Taycan are not unusable disasters people make them out to be. Besides, I’d rather get a 220-mile car that does 220 than an advertised 320-mile car that does… 220 (MYLR in the same test).

Coasting is more efficient than one-pedal driving. A lot of public perception of what EVs should do is shaped by Tesla and their inability to develop a blended braking system.

Absolute on point... once everything is EV we are going to end up buying cars from Samsung and Apple (or whatever other 2 manufacturers end up dominating the space). The same "power plant" in every vehicle means software and infotainment will rule and manufacturers will start to copy each other until we end up with a the only uniqueness being the outside shell of the vehicle. It's just a horrible dystopian outlook for cars and we are being told to lay back, just let it happen and remember to breath. Ugh

You are correct that vehicles are becoming more generic, but that's an industry wide trend, not limited to EVs. Everyone's competing to make the best midsize crossover appliance. They're all powered by turbocharged inline four cylinder engines, which at this point are a mature enough technology that there's little difference between any of them. There's been a race to the lowest common denominator running ever since the first appliance cars came out. This one just happens to take place after a major technological shift.

@@wescoleman6390 That's a fair point..however without government regulations we would still have a few options that don't fall into the mundane... with the shift we are losing these other options (V12, V10, V8 as an example) that would otherwise still exist. I guess that's the only real distinction between what you highlighted as already taking place and what is going to happen in the near future. 🍻

Mark is 100% correct about EV's in the Midwest. On my 85 mile (round trip) commute to O'Hare Airport, the only fast charging I know of is the Tesla Supercharger at the Northeast corner of O'Hare. A friend of mine had a Model S, and he got rid of it because the charging in winter here was so slow. He liked the car, but it just didn't work well for his life. Obviously this will improve in the future. I'm actually surprised at the lack of charging in Illinois because at least the Northern part is very progressive. By the way, that range in our winter will be nowhere near what the manufacturers claim, and the cold will likely degrade battery life faster than it would in more temperate climates.

Would love to see your review on the new Audi Q4 (maybe not in three years time). It's essentially a VW ID4, same MEB platform, but more Audi-like (or is it?) and way more expensive. We've been having huge software issues in the UK with the first generation so it also raises the interesting question of how you judge these new EV's. Does it ride well and Audi-like? Sure. Does any of the software work? Of course not. Is the trade-off worth it or should it all just work as advertised?

I’d love to see you guys do a comparison of the gas powered and EV versions of the same car, (i.e. eTron vs Q8). My guess is you will have similar comments about both. I say that because you both seem fairly indifferent about this one, but I don’t know that it being EV is necessarily the reason. They both might just be ok vehicles, regardless of drivetrain.

There isn't a 1:1 comparison with etron. It's between a q5 and q7 in size. That said, I've driven all three and it's way better than the others in terms of fit and finish, as well as refinement. Quieter, faster, and corners flatter too. Range is disappointing, part of it having a half assed regen.

I'm in my second EV Chevy Bolt. My battery is limited to 80% due to a recall, waiting a new battery. My commute is 156 miles round trip. I'm struggling this winter with this car. Some extreme cold weather days I need some charge to make it home. This year with the proliferation of EVs the charger network is jammed packed. That being said. I prefer the driving experience of an EV. Especially compared to modern drivetrains with 4cyl engines boosted to the limits and transmissions that are whiny. That being said, being an early adopter of EVs, the technology is rapidly changing so quickly. I would lease what is affordable, as the tech is changing so fast. Solid state batteries roll be here soon, along with H2 fuel cell electric vehicles. It's a great time to be alive if your a tech guy. I'm also a big car and motorcycle person. I'm not a tree hugger, but love tech and see the revolution of technology coming.

I don't understand the 8hr charging time you commented after driving 100 miles. 8hrs sounds like you're going from 0-100% but going only 100 miles shouldn't put you down to 0% which means to charge you should get some quicker charging in the 15-80% range.

They are referring to a Level 2 charger at 240 volts with maybe 11 Kw, not a DC fast charger. 😉

@@davetravels9273 I'm not saying using a fast charger, I'm saying faster charging which happens between 10-15% to 80% charge. Charging 0-100% takes long and isn't a realistic charge unless you're on a road trip and even then you stay in the 15-80% range.

I have a Polestar 2, an absolutely amazing EV. Dual Motors, 476 HP (Performance Upgrade), 0 to 60 in 4.1 seconds and 240 mile range. I live in California where charging infrastructure is decent, so traveling across the state is no issue. But in hindsight I wish I had just bought the Model 3 Performance, as Tesla is built on a dedicated EV platform, and it's charging infrastructure is second to none. When I travel I have to use Electrify America's charging network, and it doesn't even come close to Tesla's. There was one time in a heavily travelled area between Northern and Southern Cal 3 out of 4 EA chargers were offline, right across was Tesla's charging area with 15 working Fast chargers. Until all the other automakers get their acts together and build on dedicated platforms and properly invest in Fast charging, just get a Tesla, which are amazing vehicles. IMHO of course

I recently traded in my ‘22 Ioniq 5 for a 2019 e-tron with 10k miles. Paid $2k more than what I got for the trade. I highly recommend looking at low mileage 2nd hand versions of this car if you don’t need the longer range.

@@nucleargrizzly1776 Not really. The Ioniq is a great car, particularly in Limited AWD trim. I found it’s steering not tight enough except in Sports mode, and it didn’t have a custom or “My Mode” to allow me to use sport steering while using ECO or normal. I wasn’t impressed with its sound system either. But otherwise it was great. My brother happened to get a new e-tron, and after seeing that, I fell in love with it. I couldn’t stomach the price. But when the dealership told me they had a 2nd hand 2019 Prestige with 10k miles for $58k, I decided to try it out, and I just prefer it. It’s much more luxurious, with the adjustable suspension, has massaging seats, a ton of other luxury features that even the very well appointed Ioniq Limited doesn’t. But you give up a lot in range and miles/kW. For my usage needs, that’s not an issue.

The best thing to look forward to with "early effort" EVs is a huge drop in resale value. Cars like this should become a great value in the future when newer and better EVs hit the market, just as we've seen with the Nissan Leaf, Fiat 500e, BMW i3 and Ford Focus Electric. The Audi E-Tron, Jaguar I-Pace, early model Tesla Model 3 and pre-refresh Chevrolet Bolt will be part of the next generation of affordable used EVs.

@@DiscoFang For the earliest EVs, a 50% drop in value after 2 or 3 years was common. We're in a weird market right now, so I would expect the same thing to happen with 2 or 3 year old EVs today, but once car prices go back to normal, I think we'll start to see prices of used EVs drop substantially.

You guys have to find a way to review the Škoda Octavia and Superb here. They’re widely regarded as the “value premium” segment and have a bunch of clever features in terms of storage spaces, overall packaging of the platform to enhance interior and boot space etc. Based on VW’s MQB platform. Even though Skoda is not in the US market, it is still a brand worth reviewing and for long-term viewers like me, we would love to know your unhinged opinions on it. I have a feeling you guys would love reviewing it too. It’s probably one of the cars that’d irritate you the least with its absolute lack of gimmicks and great value proposition in the heavily marked up cars that we have today.

Thank you for making that statement about comments from Californians. I'm born and raised in Orange County, Ca and yes EVs are the future but the rest of the country doesn't have the infrastructure. I love your reviews but I think you guys missed out on what makes the Etron special. I get that you guys focus on the mechanics a lot but this vehicle is about bringing luxury to EV’s. You barely touched on things like the massage seats, automatic fragrance, quality of the interior etc…

Once again, you guys seem to be unable to hide your contempt/distaste for EVs. At least this time, you admit that you’re reviewing a product that was new 3 years ago and that the technology is changing so fast, that it’s almost a waste of time commenting on anything about it. It’s the equivalent of publishing a review of a 3 year old laptop or smartphone. That said, this underscores the importance of considering a lease instead of a loan. The strides in this segment are at such a pace that 3 years is an eternity, much less the 5 or 6 or 7(!) year loan term on a vehicle in this price range. I would like to say that I’m looking forward to you reviewing a more current model, but I doubt that you’ll give it a fair shake because it will be new (with some associated wrinkles that will need ironing out) and it will have piano black finishes and you’ll be apathetic about the sub 4 second 0-60 because so many other EVs are capable of doing the same. Even though if a gas-powered SUV hit the bottom of the on-ramp doing 90, you’d be giggling like little boys. Your criticisms of the charging infrastructure are fine and on-point. However, that’s not the case everywhere and for many people, their situations are such that the lack of fast charging isn’t that much of an issue. Mention it as a cautionary element and move on. Let people determine for themselves if it’s an issue instead of whining about it and making it a hallmark criticism of the product when it’s really just a temporary infrastructure problem that will improve over time. I’m confident that things will be quite different in a years time in that regard, which will make EVs an option for an increasing number of those people that seemingly commute the distance spanning some European countries. My commute and that of most everyone I know is 50-60 miles round trip daily. Even at double that, even this lackluster range vehicle could do the job day in and day out.

I like EVs. I like ICE too. Both are just cars to me. I don't buy all the cars seem the same argument. Drive a Tesla then a Polestar then a Porsche. OK, so you don't go buy sound/feel of an engine and transmission. But you still have steering feel, throttle mapping, regen brake and friction brake feel. The cars still have different sense of solidity in their body structures. The ride is quite different in the three cars. The level of NVH is different. And how they handle the speed in repeated acceleration is different. There are new differences. These guys need to accept that more and more BEVs are coming and don't judge EVs but ICE standards IMO.

Recycling is a farce and does not happen with Ewaste. What happens when the car is too expensive to keep on the road. Look at tesla's with battery issues that need to be fixed at the dealership instead of being able to service it at a road side garage. Hell tesla sue's the folks attempting to retain their right to repair. Folks seem to love their EV blindspots while creating a massive problem for the future.

@@d1sturb3d119 this times ten! Whatever you think about the reliability of Mercedes, BMW, VW and Audi, and there are really bad sometimes, they still can deliver spare parts original or replica’s. And most software is cracked or changeable so your brand specialist (not dealer) can keep this cars on the road. Maybe not for a penny or dime, but more affordable than a completely new battery.. All those boy racers makes it a good proposition both ways. The car keep their value ( after a big big hit) and they aren’t as disposable as some other brands..

Love your channel. I recently got an EV and the Etron was on my list. I crossed it off because of the cost to mileage compared to new models. I think a mileage range close to 300 miles is sufficient even for users with the occasional longer drive as you can reach fast chargers in most areas. Below that is not worth it

Just got to drive one of these as a loaner while my RS3 was in for service! Not a huge fan of touchscreens but if I have to use one, Audi's dual screen system is great. Not really a huge fan of SUV's either but I hadn't really ever driven one (just a family van), and honestly after driving this I kinda get why someone might buy one. Really incredible machine. Still prefer my RS3 lol

I love my e-tron, but I have to say, even living in CA, the big downside to this is still the charging network. Electrify America continues to drop the ball with non-working chargers becoming the norm and slow charging speeds. I haven't seen the 150kW speed at an EA station after the first 2 months of owning the car. Now it is constantly charging at 50-60kW.

These are depreciating very well. The range is the major issue but could be partially mitigated with decent charging infrastructure. EA appears to be limiting charging rate on many fast chargers and its not unusual to have road trip charging issues as a result. (maybe states mandating a cost per minute rather than kwh rate means EA will lower charge rates to optimize revenue). At the time of this writing, the top spec Prestige model can be had from a dealer for about $40k with a bit of oem warranty left. The premium plus base model is as low as $35k with high miles and a few grand more with 20-50k miles. Note that the steep depreciation will likely continue, so 3 year ownership costs might still be high, even with fuel savings. I drove a Prestige and a “base” model, the 21” rims on the Prestige have a firmer ride but better turn in. The base model had a very absorbent ride. I can see grabbing one in the mid to low $30’s, they seem pretty reliable ( I know Audi Reliable) and it is a very nice place to sit and travel. Electricity to run it ( free public chargers steps from my home ) is currently free for me, so $2600 per year savings vs. my 23mpg gas car 12,000 miles, premium fuel (roughly 525 gallons per year @ $4-5 per gallon)

i have one, wife didnt like the quality of the model y, she wanted something quiet, comfortable and luxurious. range is decent for short distance drivers, for 2024 model, next spring, they are upgrading the range to 370+, which i think will make this car super competitive

@@malignantnarcissism5892 I think the eTron doesn't use ANY permanent magnet motors. That hurts them a lot but has other advantages. I'm guessing they reversed that decision which alone would get them a LOT of range. Little aero tweak here or there and a bit more battery and I could easily see 370 EPA. Mind you it will probably be 310 @70mph, but who cares, no EV really uses more than about 200 or so. Charging is just TOO slow above 80% and you don't want to run it down too far below 10%. On these high range cars you just use the middle of the battery.

Mark, the issue of there not being enough chargers for the number of EV’s currently on the market is much like how the early days of the cell phone market played out. Early cell phones were expensive, offered minimal battery life, had terrible service (too few cell towers), etc. But fast forward 25 years, we now all carry around smart phones more powerful than many desktop computers and can get a full days use out of them in just about every area of the country and world. It’s going to take time to build out the EV infrastructure which isn’t a problem as it’s going to take a similar amount of time to get EV adoption numbers up. And for those people telling you that in the real world, charging at home is the norm and daily use is driving less than 50 miles - they’re right, for the vast majority of people. Even if you drive 100 miles a day in an EV with a 225 mile range, when you plug in at home at night, you only need to slow charge to make up the 100 miles of battery you used - which is less than half the total battery.

Overall, a lot of fair criticism in this one. Few thoughts: people are hung up on the $82k fully loaded figure, but the $67k base price on these doesn't stand out from the competition quite so badly, and unlike some competitors, there's little or no markup on these since Audi has marketed them with the same level of enthusiasm Mark has brought to this video, really underlining the "compliance car" vibe. These remain a very solid niche option for consistent long-range commuter driving paired with home charging, but are hard to recommend outside of that niche.

I feel so seen! I get what you’re saying here and on the other EVs, and I think with this car I finally understand your concern about how quickly they can become obsolete. I get you guys make a point of actually constructively criticizing cars regardless of their propulsion or purpose, but perhaps it’s just feeling a little stale to hear the same complaints within every EV review. I appreciate that your criticism is constructive and actually founded in reality unlike many EV decriers. You’ve mentioned before that EVs have notoriously high rates of leasing vs buying but I don’t know how much of a problem that is when leases still end up in the hands of second and third owners. I’m in the camp where the specs of this platform are very usable and more than enough and at used prices it becomes compelling again. Perhaps the obsolescence cycle for the bleeding edge will start to resemble smartphones, but there is definitely still demand for the older products or lower end platforms. Also, I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m not concerned about end of life just because of the usefulness of even batteries too degraded for automotive use - they can be reused for home storage or battery pack repairs and fetch good prices, and I think many manufacturers will start to implement something like Ford’s lease return or some kind of recycling program to reclaim materials or recycle cells for future batteries. Yes, the EV market isn’t ideal in terms of repairability, obsolescence, material sourcing, charging infrastructure, price, and availability, but considering how early on we are, how low the market share is, and how far away legitimate EV mandates are, it’s pretty good. Regarding this specific Audi, I will say this car felt a bit outdated even when it came out, in large part because of how underrated and over-buffered the battery pack was designed to avoid winter range loss, degradation, and unexpected shortfalls in range. They even unlocked part of the buffer in an update once they saw how understressed the battery was, which I can appreciate. I actually wonder if these early cars will end up with better longevity than future models because of the engineering caution and safeties that are built into the early technology. Aside from better capacity and better efficiency, a lot of manufacturers are focusing on optimizing charging and power draw to maximize power, range, and charging speed while decreasing capacity and cost. I wonder if that will bite us in the ass 20 years down the line when optimized cars will actually degrade while something like this e-tron will be the understressed V8 of EVs with 1C, and uses some of the smallest buffers in the industry, and even still their high mile examples maintain a lot of the range. I guess a lot of the optimization is also focused on battery monitoring and health optimization which can still counteract the higher peak charging rates it can achieve. Oh and, you do know your job of driving cars around just see how they drive isn’t actually a common job (and thus an illustrative use case), right? I mean hell, if it were, I’d sign up for a test driving job lol Edit: one more thing - you mention that all the EVs you drive are indistinguishable from each other lately. Two questions: is this a bad thing in a commuter crossover that you want to be quiet, capable, and comfortable? And do 2.0t premium crossovers really feel all that different from each other either when you’re not pushing their dynamic limits? Oh damn, I’ve got a third question - while I admit it’ll be hard for luxury makers to distinguish their cars, isn’t this great for mainstream buyers who can get the quiet luxury EV experience in a cheaper car and just sacrifice some leather and a couple touchscreens? You’ve mentioned this in reviews of lower end FWD German sedans and crossovers that they don’t feel any more special than their sound isolated leather clad mainstream counterparts, so I don’t see how it’s that different in EVs.

In SoCal we have allowed amount of kw for each house hold depending on number and income level. Once you go over that price goes up to punish you for using too much. Over this summer my electric bill was close to 450 a month. Not really planning to buy 80k ish electric car anytime soon.

@@krane15 Depends on what you value. I'm not looking at the car as an EV. I'm looking at it as a car. So I'm looking at solidity, ride comfort, NVH levels, steering accuracy, high speed stability, and here is where Audi shines. And I think Audis age well. You may have to pay a lot for them but in 15 years, the Audi will still feel solid. I've not seen that to be the case yet with Hyundai//Kia. They loosen up faster. I'm not knocking Kia and Hyundai but I think Audi is on a different level. If you go just for EV qualities, then Audi isn't that far advanced. But the overall car is still on a very high level and yes, you have to pay a lot more for a moderate amount better. That's the way higher priced products are.

The comment I will add is that yes, there are people who smartphone upgrade every year or two years, but we've evolved past the need for that and plenty of people use the phone they have until they run it into the ground and its unusable. Since we're not dealing with the realities of software complexity creep or other pressures that cause smartphones to fall obsolete in 5-10 years, an EV that fits your usage case today will continue to fit your usage case 10 years from now, *unless that usage case changes*. Yes, I *could* turn around and buy the 2028 audi e-tron that does 0 to 60 in [limited by tire tech and pavement quality] and has an 800 mile range, but if I personally don't have a use for that extra range and acceleration, why spend the money? That's not to discount your points about infrastructure or rapid advancement, but it's worth considering that serial car leasers already exist today and it's not like that's a new concept.

*Er, mostly evolved past the need for that - point is, computers and smartphones are a much faster paced field and you can still use smartphones for a really long time. Cars are mostly dictated by real world constraints like range needs, performance and durability, features, etc. which a lot of EVs are largely close to hitting. The indications towards waiting on EVs are infra, as you discussed, and the fact that these are state of the art midrange-premium cars with a few exceptions and it will take time for battery tech to improve enough to meet infra halfway for everyone

I think you’ve got the realities of Midwest vs California living backwards. Very few people commute 100mi day and certainly not in small midwestern towns where people can charge at home. In contrast, CA commutes can be very long. People fixate so much on range when the reality is the data shows most will never need it except on rare road trips. However, I agree the charging infrastructure for long rides in the Midwest is not adequate and desperately needs to improve. For now, EVs are an obvious replacement for a second car while keeping an ICE or hybrid for the rare road trips in thebmidwest

Without being compelled to make these things by force of law how many would we see? The rapid acceleration is the shiny object dangled in front of us to get us to buy in, the reality is that it is a gimmick. It is still a 6,000 pound vehicle, it takes a lot of energy to move it around, that has to come from somewhere, be it natural gas, coal, jet fuel, nuclear or the "green" sources, which are not so green when you look into them. A 6,000 pound vehicle will use up tires more quickly than a 4,000 pound one, it will be a higher net consumer of energy than a lighter vehicle. When governments decide that rapid acceleration is anti-social they will limit the power of those vehicles, we will be left with glorified golf carts and have no recourse. Enjoy your brave new world.

Not just that, but these EV's are so heavy in relation to their contact patches that roads will get torn up fast. Add to that the fact that these things don't burn gas, therefore there is less fuel tax money to repair and expand road networks. It's not a tasty recipe....

What law are you talking about? No one forced Tesla to make EVs just like no one forced traditional brick and mortar companies to have a Ecommerce site. It’s innovate or die. Tesla is forcing legacy automakers to get into the EV space and they’re doing a better job because they been doing it longer. There’s more to EV then rapid acceleration….quiet, charging at home for roughly $2/gal when gas is $5-7, much less maintenance vs a ICE vehicle, advanced tech, home back up power, job site/camping RV power, frunk storage, etc. EVs don’t work for everyone just like a F350 dually won’t work for everyone

Our EV goals for 2030 are unattainable given the current supply of precious metals we need. Hydrogen by far and plug in hybrids make the most sense but people keep drinking the coolaid. The folks driving this demand literally haven't left their driveway. Anything outside of a solid charging infrastructure makes this unsustainable. Lets also not forget those times the power goes out. There is no backup solution with an EV. I really hope hydrogen makes more progress overall.

@@d1sturb3d119 Engineering Explained just did an evaluation of BMW's V12 hydrogen car of ten years ago and debunked its claims of superiority. That car used liquid hydrogen, which would boil off in a week or two, it was banned from enclosed garages for this reason. Hydrogen sounds good until all downsides are explored. NASA is experiencing problems with its hydrogen fueled Artimus program, SpaceX does better with its methane fuel.

@@3ducs I was referring to fuel cells not engines. FCV's like the Mirai have had no issues so far and look promising given the range and short refuel times.

I am a bit confused. You kept saying this car has been out for three years and tghis is your first time reviewing it. So did you show and drive the original version, or the 2023 (which I did not think was available yet as I have seen no other test drive videos)?

I don't think the EV vehicles will be vastly different in 3 to 4 years. Once there is a breakthrough in battery technology, yes. Right now I feel like most manufacturers are still in the transition period from a old platform to a new one better suited for ev's.

They design PHEVs to cover the daily average commute/errands of their average customers. Doubling the battery size, and retaining an ICE system and all its components would make things very expensive/heavy. A RAV4 Prime with 50 mile PHEV range is 500lbs more than a RAV4 Hybrid. Doubling that you’ll have a 5000lb+ compact SUV, you’ll probably lose 10-20 cubic feet of storage and you’re still responsible for oil changes, emissions, etc in the ICE that you carry around and never use.

@@will.davlin yes but not likely before 2030 at the very least will you see a commercially viable new battery chemistry for EV. But if you all of a sudden could double the energy density of batteries making EVs lighter, charge faster and cheaper and have ranges exceeding gas cars, do you really need PHEV anymore? Lithium ion batteries became commercially available in the 90s, still used in our devices today. Batteries are chemical processes, not semiconductors that double in speed every few years

We bought a 2022 Sorento PHEV for my wife a few months ago, it does most of it's driving in EV mode; we bought it knowing that we'd own it for ten years and dump it; it's an appliance and one that will be (relatively) short lived as technology marches forward. I'm on the other end of the spectrum, IS350, which with regards to technology, was outdated when it came out, but I'm not worried about keeping it past the 10 year mark as it's just always going to work. I'd like to be in an EV, but they fall into four camps - CUV, econo-box, 6-figures, or made by Tesla and I want none of that. Ioniq 6 is supposed to come out next year, so I'll give that a look, wish they made a wagon version (VW id.VIZZION is coming, but their 400v EV architecture is "outdated" already).

Owning both Lexus and Tesla, I can tell you unequivocally that my Tesla are MORE reliable than any of my Lexus and much less maintenance intensive. Been for an oil change lately? My stealership is well over $100 for a 5 qt change and close to $150 for an 8 qt change. Do it yourself for less than $50.00 and use Amsoil, Royal or Mobil 1. My Tesla oil changes have amounted to zero. NO issues with ECM, belts, plugs, pumps, both oil and water nor timing chains/belts. The ONLY thing your Tesla will ever need is washer fluid in blue or orange for the high test stuff. You may not like them, BUT its a fact that Tesla is stealing sales from both Toyota and Lexus at a rapid rate.

PLEASE can you soon do a talk on your Volvo issues? I am considering a V90 (there are so few luxury wagon options in USA) but I am very put off Volvo because of you mentioning having issues. I would love to k ow what you think. Is it still ok to buy a Volvo but just get a warranty? Or just avoid at all costs and don’t touch them? I was thinking a 2020/21 with about 30k miles. I would get a 3-5 year warranty on it. But I’m open to advice!

You made a very good point, Mark, about the average person's daily commute outside your average Californian. I am from Las Vegas, and my daily commute is 62 miles round trip. Luckily, my drive is all highway, so I can average 35mpg with my supra, but I still have to fill up every week at 400 miles.

I sat in the back of this and the regular q8. There is no comparison. The q8 is so much more roomy and comfortable. This e-tron felt claustrophobic and not luxurious at all.

I’m on my 3rd EV. And I’ll be completely honest to all of you EV skeptics and people who are interested in the tech. You need a car/truck/suv that can get 300 mi of range (freeway @ 70mph). Anything less will be painful and annoying. My Rivian can get 270-280mi out of a charge with the 20” off road tires. It’s a tad lower than I’d prefer - but I don’t like the alternative on-road wheels & tires, that get ~340 highway miles. Cold temps you lose range, running the heater you lose range, driving above the speed limit you lose range. 200mi is not enough in 2023. Minimum should be 300mi. At 65mph that’s 4.5hrs of driving, 30min to fill up. That’s OK in my book.

I live in Southern Cali and more specifically in LA county. I frequently travel from LA to OC county all the time. I can tell you the infrastructure here is still not up to par where it is “convenient” to travel more than 200 miles in a day and find a suitable charging station that is either not it already taken or broken.

I drove the original e-tron when it first came out. It was impressive, but for the price, the range was the killer for me. Fast forward 4 years, I’ve owned a few EVs (Teslas Model 3 and Y, Niro EV). While range is not a concern for me at this point (our Niro EV is rated for 239 but gets closer to 300 even in the cold weather), the reason why the range is a killer for the e-tron is the size of the battery. It’s 95kw, yet barely gets 240 miles! That shows me they are way behind in the tech. If they had thrown a 70kw battery in there and dropped the price to 65k, they may sell more. But, for that sized battery and price, it needs to go beyond 300 miles.
