In todays video we go through the step by step process in planting our 3 strip system. We learned this method from legendary Iowa food plotter, Paul Knox. Thai is one of the best food plot plantings for whitetails.
All our great seeds for this system.

Love it! I do 1 light disc a year right before planting. Wasted so much seed and time trying to no till and or buckwheat method. Thought my soil was junk. Light disc and beautiful germination and food plots the last 2 years.
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
There are many ways to plant. This happens to be may favorite. Notill has its place with the right soil and moisture. Some of these clay grounds will not allow the buckwheat method to work very well.

Good video, John. After 10+ years of plotting and most of a lifetime of farming, I run an 8 strip variation of this system on 1 acre. It's funny how I ended up with the same strategy and even the same equipment! Thanks for breaking down your planting for others to learn from. Wish I could send you some of our rain. We're drenched here in Vermont.

Great information John. It's great for guys like me when you explain and show how you plant certain seed blends. My food plots are going to continue to improve thanks to you and your seed. Planted sweat feast brassica mix last week and had germination in 3 days. I run a 2 strip planting and will plant fall forage blend next week and then just wait for Nov!

I'm working on 2 no-till plots right now. I like your 2023 setup. With mine I'm seeding b4 terminating my Buckwheat over it. First summer here in central MN where we've had good rain in the last 3 years. I've had much better yields when doing it this way. My plots r smaller but when i get the right seed mixture i get alot of tonnage. I had 15" forage radishes last year but my plants weren't as large as they were like 3 years ago when the Buckwheat drowned out any weed growth that came to seed.

This is one of the best food plot videos out there. Can you provide how much your lawn roller weighs for rolling the plot, and how you have it attached to the disc? Also, what rate were you spreading your fall forage and fertilizer? Answers to these would truly round out your great explanations in this video. Thanks and I look forward to buy more seed from you in the future!
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
Lawn roller is well over 200 pounds i have a hitch on the back of the disc to hook the roller to. I never noticed it until my son pointed it our a few years back lol. Fall Forage is 100 pounds per acre red clover is 8 to 10 radishes is 4 brassica is 6 peas is 100

Great Rye May be a better option if rain is limited. The green blend will work with weekly rain.

I know this is old, but you caught my ear with the Liberty. Are you still using this? I was researching it and was getting ready to start using it. I did see some information about not planting brassicas for 70 days after use. Its not that it kills them, but they retain something from the spray.

Looking forward to seeing your results. On two 4 acre plots, I have 4 sections. 1 acre in clover/chicory in second year, 1 oats mixed with brassicas in a spring planting for a fall grain plot (doing great), 1 acre of soybeans, and a dedicated brassica plot. Keeping my fingers crossed for a big bruiser in November. What do you recommend over seeding on the soybeans when the leaves turn yellow besides rye? Ground is very firm, so wondering if your brassica mix would germinate?
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
half the beans in brassica blend the other half in rye and radishes
@dennisullman4188
@dennisullman4188 11 месяцев назад
Maybe frost seed the brassica side with red clover. In the spring/summer you will have red clover in one strip, rye and red clover in the other strip. Mow the rye before it gets too tall. Then in fall, you have red clover in both strips, till both in and start the rotation over.
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 11 месяцев назад
Possibly Some returning brassica May give off a weed killer (allopathic) and give the frost seeded clover issues. But good strategy for sure

Hi John, looking forward to getting your clover and brassica seeds in this weekend. You have a similar size food plot to mine. If you could gain 1/8 of an acre by removing red osier dogwood around the edges would you do it?It’s my only food plot and I have an adequate amount of browse on my property. Not sure how important browse is around a food plot.

What are your thoughts on planting buckwheat as a smother crop in last years fall forage section as an alternative to your berseem clover/oats/crimson clover mix?

John is it best to plant cearal grains and brassica at the same time or have a couple week gap between plantings. Im in mid west Michigan.

depends on deer density and soils, moisture

High deer density. Heavy soil, black dirt with clay underneath. I live just north of Brad Harper. Just seems like oats and rye might be pretty mature by the time season is here. But it would be nice to put it all in at the same time

Any concern with disease buildup planting brassica strips every other year and light radish on off years or is this enough of a rotation to keep disease down? My brother may be closing on purchase of land late August/early Sept. May be just enough time to plant something real late. Pure beach sand. Thinking of rye and red clover mix to get some green this fall and start a soil build. Any other ideas for a Sept beach sand plant?
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
At radishes 4 pounds an acre plus the next spring and summer with rye and radishes, I’ve not really seen anything that. Would concern me.
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
Rye is a great fall starter on sand. Not sure how well the red clover will do.
