There are big changes coming for some Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuitants in 2023. Find out how the changes may affect you if you are a surviving spouse and you receive DIC from the VA or if you requested the SBP Optional Annuity for Dependent Children because your military loved one was a service member who died in the line of duty.
Julie Burandt-Partin is the Director of Retired and Annuitant Pay for the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. She is responsible for the oversight and direction of over $50 billion in pay and close to 20 million pay-related transactions annually for approximately three million retired military service members, survivors and beneficiaries.

Are you saying that if you receive DIC as of February 1 2023, the surviving spouse now can get the SBP also

Can a surviving spouse receive SBP, DIC, and Social Security Benefits at the same time. I know the surviving spouse can receive SBP and DIC at the same time but am not sure how Social Security is affected. I am not sure what SSIA is.

I believe so, until the youngest child reaches 18, then social security ceases.

Can an ex-spouse collect SBP and the current spouse collect DIC?

My husband's former spouse with a court-ordered SBP died recently so she never collected. I'm his second wife of 30 years; will I receive 55% SBP? I think we send in the death certificate, and our marriage certificate, plus a notarized DD Form 2656-6. Was confused by sec. 3 of this form. Do we treat this as remarriage or do we submit two of these forms, as Suspension followed by Remarriage? It says "new" spouse but I hardly feel "new" being we were married 30 years. It is incredibly hard to get answers from DFAS. Thanks.

Your husband would have had to enroll you. He will need to enroll you during an open season. They are announced in newsletters emailed out by dfas. You won’t be eligible unless he has enrolled you because there is a deduction from his retired pay that funds it.

i retired from US Navy and did not have any idea what is SBP. Do you have to pay anything for SBP just like life insurance. I know I dont have to pay for DIC,

Yes - you pay in to it as a retiree, if you've enrolled.

Can you stop SBP?

Only after year 2 and before year 3 of retirement, or during some open enrollments. You have to have spousal concurrence if a spouse is the beneficiary.
