Lately, a few of the new Colorado and Canyon truck owners have reported issues of a dead battery when they try to turn their trucks on in the morning. In this video, I shed a little more light on the issue, as well as outline a possible reason for the battery draining. Disclaimer, I am not a mechanic nor do I claim to be one. Everything said in this video by me is just my opinion based on observable facts and past experiences. Enjoy the video!

This same thing happened on my 2021 Colorado about 12 months after buying. About damn time they did something to fix it.

2024 Canyon owner here. The issue has yet to be resolved. My battery was dead the next weekend after July 4th this year. It would not start when I attempted to boost and jump it. The tow truck driver was finally able to boost it, but it had no power steering so I had to have it towed to the dealer. The dealer claimed it was a bad battery. After I got the truck back I checked for updates and noticed that the last attempted update was July 4th, while we were out of town away from wifi and in a spotty cell area. My guess is the truck was attempting to update for just over a week when the battery finally died.

Had my updates done at the Dealer last Monday. No issues until then. Had to boost it every day and clear codes to drive it. Went back Friday and was told it's fixed. Dead again Saturday. We'll see what happens.

This wouldn't be an issue if we didn't have computers that had to be updated, like before cars and trucks became "rolling computers", too bad you cant get a basic "classic" truck.

Buying a first year model truck is tempting because it’s usually the latest and greatest, but history has shown me it’s better to wait a year or 2.

This happened to my new Trail Boss,,I didn’t know anything about any of this,,any way, I noticed the speedo screen was still lightly eliminated ,I shut all the doors,nothing would make it go off, so I knew battery would be dead so I got my charger ready for next day but didn’t hook it up yet,,,wanted to see if it was dead first,yes it was dead,, they didn’t know what was going, they had to call main head quarters,,so they told me they had to update everything,they had my truck for 3 days,,,everything is working now,hopefully no more problems, cause I love this truck,,I would have never bought this truck if it looked like the previous gen!

Check your fuses. 80% of mine were loose. Was causing intermittent wiper motor issues.

I disabled updates like you said and battery died again a week later.

I got hit with a 2nd round of update/ battery drain issue twice in 1 day, mid September. Jump started it both times. A week later I caught the failed update as the radio system didn't shut off as it would normally do when the door is opened with the residual power mode. I found i had to manually hit the power button on the radio to turn it off. This method will turn off the radio display. I can enter my truck and without turning on accessories or starting it, turn my radio on. The update menu currently is grayed out, but still accessible with a message stating the update has failed, place vehicle in park to try again or contact the dealer

Update, just found that by holding the call end button on the wheel for 10 seconds will reset the android system running the infotainment screen. I tried it and now the display shuts down automatically Update: it worked for a couple of cycles, but reverted back...

This just happened to me last week. The battery was dead and had to get a ride to work. Came home, was able to get it jumped and drove it to the dealer. The dash was not lit up and I had no idea how fast I was going. I also believe I had no blinkers either. Dropped it off at the dealership and the next day said my vehicle was fixed. According to them, there was nothing wrong with the battery and had to do with what you had just explained. It was trying to update the system and drained that drained the battery. They apparently pushed the update through and assured me that everything was fine. Two days later, my truck was dead again. I had it towed to the dealership and left it there because I was heading on vacation the next day. When I get back on Monday, I'll see what they will have for me.

Sometimes when a battery drains all the way down there’s no bringing it back. Might not be anything wrong with your truck now and if the update is downloaded you might be good, but you could need a completely new battery to start fresh.

Got my truck back this morning, and I was given a brand new battery! They tested the battery for the 2nd time, and it was completely dead. As for the updates and not being connected, according to the gentleman, they turned off one of the settings to stop with the updates but should have turned off the rest of them. I was told not to update anything if I was given a prompt until GM has the bugs figured out. I was told that I would be given a phone call once the new patch is ready.

Well it’s not just Trail Boss, I went through this last Friday with my Z71. If I had not watched the Fix it Alex video on this problem just 2 nights earlier I would’ve been freaking out!

The firmware updates need to have a proper minimum battery voltage percentage before accepting the update, like Apple does with their products. #gm #gmc #Colorado #Denali #at4 #canyon #firmware #software #updates #techsupport

Keep in mind that OTA is in it's infancy stage for cars. Cellphone makers experienced the same issues when they implemented it. It will improve and it will be to everyone's benefit.

Yes he does. My low pressure system was saying low rear tire but not true next morning I had a dead truck. Bought a jumper box. Started right away and ever since. Next time I’ll have my new jumper box.

Not a software update but a glitch in the system that drained battery. It probably will happen again electronically controlled automobiles are likely going to have problems. Battery and key fobs will need replacing regularly
