Very valid points! One thing about this 2.7 L engine that many people aren't aware of is that this is an update of the L3B version that we saw when it was introduced in the Silverado back in 2019. GM managed to workout some issues the engine was having and over time also made hardware changes, so they came up with the current variant of this 2.7 being the LR2. You can still get the L3B in their work truck Colorado, but the LT, Z71 Trail Boss, and ZR2 come with the L3B which aside from the hardware changes, it also has the capability to be tuned to their "high output" setting. Another fun fact, this version of the engine is the very first engine that GM has tested and abused that did not fail on them once! I did a review on the new Trail Boss Colorado and the guy I was with in the video had a chance to meet with the GM engineers to drive these trucks before they became available.
Yep I have not been a chevy fan since my 05 colorado. But the 23 redesign and the fact that I honestly believe the L3b has been proven, bugs worked out and will be the most reliable mid size truck turbo available for a while. And the capabilities vs price may the Colorado trailboss and the zr2 amazing. Love thos new 23 Colorado.
@@Jason-Samko thank u ima post it later on its a nice vehicle the only reason I got it was cause some one order it like 8 moths ago lol but he ended up not buying it I jumped first chance I got
I agree with you on a lot of points but my issue is the 16mpg. With OPEC running the show oil is projected to go $150 per barrel. We could have an energy crisis on our hands next year or so. I know you're not thrilled with hybrid technology but it is the future whether we like it or not. Don't be surprised if Chevy dumps this engine in a few years and goes pure elec. All of the car brands are doing this. Even Ram is coming out with it's elec/hybrid tech next year on the 1500 REV. It's not going to be like ripping off a bandaid, super quick, but it's def going to happen very soon.
Alot or people believe that and gov sure wants us to believe it too. And it might be right. But my opinion is it will be be 25 years before we can handle evs as a whole. Our grids can't even handle a hot summer day right now. And I will never own a ev even then. Again my opinion.
@@Jason-Samko OPEC controls - $150 a barrel is around the corner. This current Administration really sold us out. The answer is to drill at home. Become energy independant. Our only chance to break away. I here you on the EV's. No one wants them. It's all political. Great job on your channel! :)
@dad242 agree 100! Miss the days of 2 dollar gas. But I also remember paying over 5 a gallon during Obama. I'm a 40k mile a year driver. That hurt bad.
I looked at the Colorado but since they discontinued the 6-cylinder and diesel engines and only offer 4-cylinder engines I went another way. I want an engine that will run >250,000 miles and the 4-cylinder is less likely compared to the 6-cylinder or diesel.
A relative of mine had a 2019 Silverado with the 2.7 turbo and a 8 speed transmission. Not only did he have issues with both the engine and transmission, GM/Chevy did not fully cover the problems under warranty. He has since traded off the truck and claims he will no longer buy GM vehicles. Although he said he did like the truck when it was running right..
The bison is a sweet truck. Only thing I don't like is the spare tire in the bed. Hopefully some one makes a rear bumper with tire mount for it soon so people can have the bed space back.
The Colorado zr2 is alot of truck for the money. Besides the gladiator the Colorado zr2 is the most capable off road truck out there and is still very affordable comparably. Raptor ranger will be a bit more capable when it comes but also cost 10k more and even then for the same price as the raptor the bison edition of the zr2 will keep that top place. I love that Ford and jeep and gm all offer amazing mid size trucks now!
I have had my Summit white Canyon AT4X now for about three weeks and I love that thing! Yes, it has a few things that I wish were different but all in all I couldn't be happier. That truck does not have a single rattle, squeak, or shimmy, it is solid and it is quick. Brakes are strong, pedal is solid, steering has the right heft and feedback. Another thing that doesn't compute in my brain is that it has less road noise with 33's then my other normal cars, no exaggeration. It is extremely quiet and well mannered on the road. Not only does it not tire you out on long drives, it is a great place to be. A couple other things I haven't heard others mention yet is the HVAC kicks ass. Fan setting #2 is all I have ever needed, any higher and my hair is blowing in the wind. The Bose system sounds incredible too. I should mention also that this is the first GM vehicle I have ever owned so this isn't being said out of any loyalty. Things I don't love... Menu's can get deep and confusing to find things sometimes, I am not a fan of the piano Black plastic (ever), this is a strange one but the way the hood is shaped- when it is raining water pools in two spots on the hood and then gets thrown up on the windshield when enough collects. Some of the plastic could be softer (above the door handles/ window sills mainly), the wireless phone charger is a little touchy. I don't care for capless gas fillers. Gas mileage is not great but also not lower then advertised. That's about it though. All in all super minor stuff. I am very happy with this truck so far.
Love hearing this! I can not wait for mine to get here. Funny thing is all the people I expect to chime in telling me I'm making a mistake. Don't listen to them. They do t know thier head from thier ass. And when I bought ford's and did videos people said the same thing. When I bought my ram people said the same thing. When I bought my jeep people said the same thing, when I bought my tacoma people said the same thing. So if you see people dogging the gm stuff here don't listen to em. Most likely people driving a 1998 Ford that watch memes about Ford vs chevy. Congrats on an absolutely beautiful truck. Thank you for the real world feedback and keep me posted how it is off road if you take it there!
@michaelallen2221 yep the off road capabilities are what I'm after. But if I didn't need that there are many y amazing trucks out there for alot less money that I would take in a heartbeat
I put a thousand $ deposit on a 2023 Colorado zr2 almost 7 months ago and it'll be here next week. I did all the same research and I agree on every single point made here, especially the new Tacoma engine options. To get 430 lb-ft of torque in the new Tacoma I'd have to get some ridiculous hybrid. No thanks. The new 4 cylinder turbo has proven itself for five years in hundreds of thousands of Silverado trucks and I watched a video where the GM mechanic was testifying that these engines never end up in the shop. The front/rear lockers and the DSSV shocks are the other definitive factors, and after many months of research it was an incredibly easy decision for the new Colorado ZR2👍🏻
Oh and I went with the desert sand color, for the exact same reason you got white. I live on a dirt road and It's utterly pointless to wash the truck.. but the dirt that is always all over my truck is basically the same color as the desert sand so at least it'll kinda look clean-ish lol
I just received my zr2 today. One thing no one seems to talk about is height. I’m 5’11 and this truck is high to get into and jump to get out. I also think there should be a oh shit handle on drivers side to help get in and out. The lower side seat booster is never gonna hold up but we will see. I may take the rock bars off and install Auto step. My last truck was 2019 Silverado black widow 6” lift and I was comfortable with my auto step. Has anyone done this to a zr2 yet? Pictures?
When I was in the market for a new truck almost 6 years ago, I did my research (like you) and ended up with a 2018 Colorado ZR2. It now has 100k and I couldn't be happier with my decision. It gets driven hard on and off road and is still going strong. I would love a new one, if this one ever gives up. I keep up with maintenance, so I don't see that happening any time soon! Good luck. Nice truck!
Loved the Zr2 when it first came out and always wanted one. Cant wait to try this one out. glad you have been so happy with yours too. I have read so much, watched very video, read all the forums and fb groups as I do whenever I buy anything. and all the complaining on this new colorado are minor first year little hiccups or people doing stupid stuff. When I bought my tacoma the tacoma forums were filled with major issues like cv's, ball joints, main seals etc. going very early and that was on a 5th year of the generation!. those are trip stoppers. so far other than the battery update hiccup this colorado seem very reliable so far.
@SamkoWorkShop It was and still is the best bang for your buck mid-sized off roader. I hope you love yours as much as I love mine. I'm still making life long memories with it
I owned the previous gen Colorado & will be buying this new Chevy. Have also owned Toyota, Ford, & Ram. I’ll gladly buy Ford & GM, but experiences and opinions vary. I just don’t get the clowns that feel the need to tell you what you should be buying. It’s a very individual decision & quality is negligible across modern brands.
Could not agree more! 100% spot on. And I bet you will love this new colorado. Have drove 3 trail bosses and a zr2. These trucks are amazing so wicked fast! Love them
everytime they seem to update software some trucks break and wont start because the battery is completely dead. so idk happend 2 or 3 times to a youtuber.
Yep saw that too. But I consider that a easy fix and minor issue. So far the Colorado has had zero big issues. That's awesome for a first year release. You should see the crap happening with the tundra even after being in its second year! Or what the bronco went thru with motors blowing all over the place with bad values and customers waiting 8 months for thier vehicle to be repaired. I'll take the mini issues the Colorado is having any day. Carry a jump starter until thry get this kink worked out. Problem solved and I'd still be driving.
I heard the 2024 model is coming out with aluminum oil pan instead of the plastic oil pan is this true Because the silverado 2.7 came With a plastic pan??
Like the looks of the ZR2 but I just can’t trust a bow tie, every damn one I’ve ever owned left me stranded. I prefer a naturally aspirated engine which is getting hard to find nowadays, went with a Gladiator and lifted it with 35s. Good luck with the truck!
gladiator would be my only other choice id take if buying right now and the fact that I could get 10k off msrp on a gladiator makes it even more tempting. But I have drove 5 gladiators and owned 4 wranglers. I dont like them as a daily driver as much as a normal truck. but it was a tough choice as for me a vehicle is not an emotional buy but rather a need that I try to make the best financial decision on.
Congratulations man, I hope your deal works out! I’m trading my SS 1LE Camaro for a new White ZR2 Colorado. I put the deposit as well and as long as numbers hold, I’ll take it! Best of luck brother!
Thanks brother, I will be putting some videos out in it once I get it if it all works out! Best of luck man, let’s hope these dealers stay true to their word!
I have a 21 Colorado Bison and I do all my maintenance. I can say without a doubt it has been amazing. v6 purrs. Bought it from the dealer with 6 miles, bout to hit 30k and not one single issue. Only check engine light I received is when my tire pressure is getting low and rids of it when I bring back 34psi. I don’t drive it hard and I am coming from a 02 Nissan Frontier that had 186k. No issues but I wanted something newer and I graduated grad school and I wanted to treat myself. Toyota fan boys will do anything to hate, but never owned a Chevy. Can’t knock it till you try it. Be about it. I recommend the truck. Since the first gen I’ve always been following the Colorado. I have no regrets. I hope you enjoy your truck assuming everything goes smoothly at the dealer.
Thanks for the great comment. I'm so excited to get it yeah the nay sayers come from all corners. On my other channel when I bought my f150 I got hounded, when I bought my jeep, same thing, when I bought my ram same thing, when I bought my Toyota same thing. And if anything goes wrong with any vehicle thry are the first to chime with I told you so stuff. The world is full of them. Glad you are loving your truck!
I'm going to test drive one of these hopefully next week. Only thing I'm seeing that I'm not a fan of is that to activate and control your headlights and to turn on/off child lock on windows and doors is all done through the infotainment system which I find a little inconvenient. Other than that seems solid. I am 6'2" so I'm curious to see how I'd fit into it as well.
It's gonna have so quirks first couple years. They all do. Every manufacturer has that problem. Look at the tundra. 3 years and it's still having all sorts of issues. Look at the first 2 years of broncos, or Silverado, or f150s. All the same. To be expected
I'm going to be trying to get one soon. Would you be willing to give me a range of what you paid for it? I would love to have some negotiation ammo when I go shopping. I'm happy to give you private information so you can get it to me privately. Thank you.
Aside from SamkoWorkshop, any of you current/future ZR2 owners doing any offroading? I absolutely love the truck for its capabilities and looks. But I will only do mild and limited real off-road stuff. I want the truck, planning on ordering it soon. Am I a poser?
look at the ford raptor, that truck is an amazing offroader but 95% of them never leave pavement. the survey I saw of raptor owners said they would never take it in the woods as it cost too much and is too nice..lol nothing wrong with owning a offroader for the looks and treating it like a pavement princess.
I pulled a 3000 pound enclosed trailer with ladder racks on it daily for my pressure washing with my 22 tacoma. It does good but the gas mileage towing is brutal. Like 7 to 8 mpgs. Before the tacoma my jeep cherokee trailhawk would tow the same trailer at 14 or 15 mpgs. The tacoma is not really a good tow vehicle for the wallet. But it's an amazing truck overall.
A shock blew out at 5k miles, a electrical connection was broken causing it to not start occasionally. And a exhaust hanger was missing or broke off causing a bad rattle.
@apa7611 none of it was a big deal and none of it left me stranded ever. I have zero complaints on my tacoma. Love it! Stuff happens. As long as it doesn't strand me I'm good with an occasional new vehicle hiccup.
The interest rates right now make it crazy expensive. It's a sad time to buy a new truck that's for sure. Hopefully it will all turn around for you soon
@@Jason-Samko ikr that’s for sure! Thx I appreciate it! 17 an hour in a job just to save for a truck is far far away. If I end up not getting this truck I just might look for a good ol 2005 or 2006 Chevy Silverado
@infinitoknight6577 nothing wrong with a used Silverado. In my area of Georgia I see hundreds of mid 2000 chevy 1500s on the road. No rust zone down here. They all look like new and seem to run perfect
Don't give up if the deal falls through. Happened to a guy I know. He got tired of waiting for ZR2 for the price he wanted, and "settled" on a Z71 Colorado. Wife told him he needs to start sitting down when he pees, and learn to "tuck n walk"..totally don't blame her!!!
ZR2 def looks nice, I'd double check skid plates tho. If i'm remembering right from a TFL video, they showed the undercarriage of the ZR2 and it didn't have much coverage. Just front and transmission
From what I'm seeing only gas tank doesn't have a skid and I'm hearing it's because it's already super thick and doesn't need one. But won't be long before after market makes tank skids for cheap if someone wants one. The zr2 skids cover all the way past Trans and transfer case. That's very nice. Cost me 800 bucks to buy skids that would do that on my tacoma
I'm looking forward to the reviews in the snow. I am in far north Canada and my white ZR2 arrives this week or next. My primary driving is on back roads, logging roads and in the mud and snow. We have 8 months of winter starting next month! I will probably invest in a set of studded snows for the winter. Thanks for the straight up review!
You did your research. I think you made a great choice with good data. I have a blue one coming next week. FYI: All vehicles must have a backup camera standard now so you should at least get that one.
Congrats on your blue one! Love that color! Yep when I said no camera option I meant not the 500 dollar under body cameras.
A electrical issue cause a no start problem, a shock blew out at 5k miles and a exhaust hanger broke off. Nothing major and nothing that ever left me stranded. I live my tacoma
Im a high mile driver at 40k miles a year, I have a system of buying and selling at a certain time that works best for me because im a high mile driver. Im getting a good deal because I used what I know and have learned over the last 29 new vehicles to shop the right way and the right dealers. Not cause I want to be but because I had to. Driving that much means I would loose money if i did not learn to buy em right and sell em right.
Sam if you have already placed a $1000 deposit down that should mean the price is locked down? Why would you put a grand down without knowing what you are payiny?
The deal on the truck is set in stone with my deposit. But you would be surprised how many dealers will still play games. like saying we can only offer that price if you finance thru us where they give you sell rate witch means the dealer gets 1.5 or 2 perfect of the finance rate. and other tricks they pull. I have had a few deals go south at the last minute that I walked away from. So until I have it signed for and keys in my hand anything can happen. And If the deal doesnt work for me I walk. i bet 1 out of 5 dealers are good. and its getting harder to find that 1. Hopefully the one Im working with proves to be one of the 1s. If I do walk my 1000 comes with me.
and 100k drivetrain warranty is a plus!! Now I like the ZR2/Trailboss trucks. Great styling but not a mid-size guy. I like the full-size trucks and with my camper I’m on the bubble for 3/4t but like my f150.
The 100k warranty is only on the sliverado version I think. Not the Colorado. I think it's for some of the earlier Silverados that had some new model year issues with the motor. The 3/4 tons are still a pretty decent buy right now. Half tons are getting stupid expensive. The f250 and 350 are excellent trucks as is the cummins.
the 2024 zr2 will have launch control, so there will be atleast some sort of change, unless its just a software option that can be downloaded to the 2023s later at the dealership
Yep just saw that. But not worth anything to me especially If the msrp goes up like I expect it to. Bit I do know production from 23 to 24 happens seamlessly on the same day. So nothing much is changing
@@2011buddylee I believe the ultifi is multi subscription options so you can pick and choose what you want. and looks like it will be free for first owner for a year or something like that. All rumors at this point. But i do believe its a stupid thing. toyota is following suit with that as well. even my 2022 has subscriptions you need to pay for after 1 year to keep. stupid ways to keep collecting money for the life of the vehicle. gm said ith will bring in billions of revenue (with a B billions). We are the ones that pay for that. sickening.
@2011buddylee agree 100% insurance companies are huge scams. Worse that car dealerships. And that's saying something. Bit atleast there are a few good car dealers, there are no good ethical insurance companies.
resale is worthless if you dont get a good price to begin with. and there are many other factors to resale price than resale value such as purchase demand. my tacoma was the worst vehicle purchase I have made in 10 years and cost me more than my last 5 vehicles to own. that can not be debated either. where as ram, jeep, ford, have all been much better vehicles for me cost wise in all categories (buy, own, sell and cost to own).
@@Jason-Samko not when they've only got like 1000 miles on them. Means something is wrong with them or someone really doesn't like it. Either way I'm sceptical about Chevy especially considering the failing batteries and digital gauges.
If you’re claiming your Toyota has been in the shop that much, either yours is a 1 in million anomaly or you’ve completely neglected it. 99% of other Toyota owners including myself had a much different experience.
believe it or dont. Im assuming your a grown person and can believe what you do or dont want to. makes no difference to me. I do not lie though, ever. you will see that if you knew me or followed my content.
I can only think of 2 reasons to buy a chevy , #1 , you like repairing trucks all the time , and #2 , you didn't have enough money for a Toyota Tacoma ...LOL
I have a 2019 Tacoma, purchased new and it’s been in the shop numerous times for unscheduled maintenance requiring repair/ new parts. Two separate occurrences requiring a tow service, leaving me stranded. Host of issues in all three categories of QDR. It’s a hot mess with currently less than 39,000 miles. Never again will I own a 3G Tacoma. I can’t wait to dump it. If it got totaled today, I wouldn’t look back. New issue is a timing cover leak noted at its 35K mile service. It’s out of warranty and I don’t trust it. It’s not long term for my driveway.
@@josephkane4364Toyota tacomas are the best trucks ever I use to work for Toyota as a technician for 9 years!!! I never had a Tacoma every break down. Normal use. I’ve seen the engine covers leak yes that I can agree they do leak. I’ve done a couple of them. Feel like Toyota will get there engines down way far better than ford and chevy. People just buy these because it’s already lifted 🙄

Engine idler pully replaced due to rattling noise. Front suspension clunk. (Sway bar and/ or front dampers) Pending. Front end clunk when reversing and applying brakes. You know these things are over priced when my guy has a pros and cons list for financing his por life away on a gm that’s just going to have a turbo motor that blows up and if it doesn’t enjoy the 15mpg out of it.😢
