Yeah I'm on the same boat here though the lack of uniqueness in enemies and the generic ai really has been a bummer for me. This is exactly where games like brimstone earn the spotlight
@@PiterMorbid I played two scenarios of Arena The Contest and haven't liked it at all. Tanares may be better but as I don't like the combat system, I happily passed on that one.
My wife gave me Oathsworn as a Christmas gift and I can’t wait to play it! I organized it and ended up ordering the deluxe bags for the cards, dice and coins. The rulebook is the only thing standing between me and actually getting it to the table.
So I’ll definitely be in over my head this year for stuff coming out. I backed League of Dungeoneers and Tanares Adventures Ultinate. Those are going to keep me busy for years.

Our group is a year into Aeons Trespass (mid Cycle 2) so we're surprised / not surprised at your thoughts on it - it takes a certain type of group to wan to progress through these massive adventures, and figured you'd be all about it - Sounds like you hit the 1 Battle that is a garbage battle (ambush), but that was the only one we found and played. It's a very impressive game. But we're excited to finish it so we can start Oathsworn.

I really wanna play a lot of these, Marvel zombies for one. I just don't have people to play it with. Aeon Trespass looked lovely, I want that for the miniatures. But yeah, the mechanics could have been better.
League of Dungeoneers has been my favourite this year. Much better than I was expecting and one that will be staying in my collection. I have just had Dungeon Universalis delivered but I think that I am going to pass it on. I have been painting and playing a lot of Massive Darkness 2 and enjoying it a lot. Aeon Trespass I have managed to resist as I don't think that I can give it the time needed. Haven't started on Tanares Adventures yet. I will be painting it soon. About halfway through Oathsworn. Amazing game. I have never tried Shadows of Brimstone, so might pick up Valhalla? I have just started playing Dungeons of Doria and Deliverance and both are maintaining my interest. Waiting for Dungeon Crusade to arrive, which is another reason why I think Dungeon Universalis isn't going to get played. Have a great 2024!
I've really enjoyed MD2 and SoB Forbidden Fortress this year (both new to me) which are complete opposite ends of the fiddly spectrum 😂. Also been enjoying Marvel Zombies (my first Zombicide game), and I just got Oathsworn in, so hopefully will be able to experience that one soon. I'm most excited for Agemonia and Harakiri to deliver this year, and I'm still hoping we will see wave one of Stormsunder by next Christmas. Who knows about the rest of it, but I can dream.
I'm sure in one of their latest updates they've said Stormsunder will be 2025. I'm kind of forgetting about it and hoping it arrives at some point and turns out to be an awesome game.
@@gaminggeek241 we beat the 1st boss on our second settlement with just rawhide and half naked man with twlight sword. We basically had a village that had a lot of births
@@1AngelAlita I suppose it fills a similar RPG in a box for us. Kdm for me is all about the settlement phase. Killing the monsters is just the means to feed the next generation. sob, coolest feature is the ability to grab gear from different worlds and conuntuine those adventures. Numenera role playing game we would rather play also now then sob. Less clunky.
Not 100% whether I will play ISS Vanguard. Heard criticism that the game falls off later in the campaign. Maybe if I find someone else who wants to play with me...

I think if League of Dungeoneers had not come out, I would have kept DUN Universalis but just found myself pulling out the former rather than the latter.
Hey! Surprised not to see Isofarian Guard on your list. Have you played / ordered / considered it? I don't think we will see Stormsunder until 2025. Trying to make peace with it...
I seriously considered backing the latest Kickstarter but decided against it last minute. Some reviewers criticized that it can be a grind and I didn't like it was only two player.
Im also patiently waiting for Stormsunder to show up. Super excited for that one. Another one that i think is going to be incredible is Primal: The Awakening. Also excited to try to paint those once they show up.
Hope you cover the revised league of dungeoneers. I went all in on the Kickstarter, now I need stl for the monsters 😢 Stormsunder I can't wait, I agree with having it balanced before releasing however with the time I wish they could have added a narrator, even if it's a.i.
Oathsworn seems awesome but it also seems like it’s not replayable, while Tanares Adventures seems to be very replayable (I have both and am looking forward to playing in 2024 or 2025!). Happy new gaming year!
Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy Dungeon Universalis. I 100% agree it's terrible as a co-op dungeon crawl. But I will say I think it's fantastic as a solo rpg when you want to do a dungeon crawl theme. It's 100% okay to ignore or change rules to simplify it and make it more fun for you. It's my perfect solo rpg game. It's more of a toolkit then an actual game. But I agree I would never do a gaming group co-op campaign of it. If others expressed interest in trying it I would probably just do a 1 shot where I played the dark player and let them play heroes. I think League of Dungeoneers is way worse on t he rules than Dungeon Universalis. Half their rules don't make sense. There's way less tactics involved. Tons of typos. Not play tested as well. Way less customization. I hear they are doing a reprint though to fix a lot of the issues.
I really enjoyed Darkest Dungeon. Similar to MD2 where it isn't overly complicated and FUN while being tense and brutal lol... OrcQuest was another enjoyable crawler, need to play more of it though.
@@gaminggeek241 I've only played the first mission a couple times and not all the way through, so I'm not sure what their referring to mechanically. What I did play and experience was fun, and it has a super unique way of spawning mobs in buildings by dropping dice inside a custom insert that can adjust for the room size.
Heard a lot of good things about Massive Darkness 2 and it seems like it may be one I could enjoy. Bit worried about Tanares but nothing I can do about that now. Oathsworn was a bit of a disappointment for me, I liked the ideas but thought the depth was not enough for something which required such long setup and play times and I feel a lot of it could have been streamlined. Think I may have similar issues with Tanares but hopefully not. Dungeon Universalis I read parts of the rulebook and decided it was not for me. That rulebook needs a few more passovers. It was very poor at giving information in an effective way and the while I didnt play it I got the feeling the pacing of the game would not be very good. If it was cheaper I would have given it a go. Backed League of Dungeoneers so will see how that goes.
I didn't include Witcher on this list but maybe I should have? It was fine but I would rather play the four DCs over it. Probably because I prefer co-ops over competitive. But the card combo mechanic and deck building of Witcher is fun.
I just received Dungeon Saga Origins. On the lighter side, but I am really impressed with how Mantic does their other war games. Reviews showed this more favourable than the original Descent, esp. wrt One-vs.-all and very streamlined. Looking forward to playing it😊.
@@gaminggeek241 It's a slight step up from Hero Quest so it's good for playing with kids if Hero Quest doesn't have enough complexity to keep you engaged but still not being too complex for the kids (depending on their age of course). Based on the games you play though, the slight bump in complexity may still not be enough for you though so the only way to know is to give it a try.
Couldn't agree more with you about AT:O. I was so excited after backing it and watching its development but after a dozen showdowns and 40 odd tiles explored in Cycle 1 it just felt like a headache to play and never a joy. So much wasted potential.
“Fairly delayed” is very, very kind- made the mistake of backing Stormsunder and revised Wild Assent, and will be SHOCKED if either delivers, ever. Oh well, it’s only money, right?!
Yeah neither is every being delivered, I was very fortunate in getting a partial refund for Wild Ascent earlier in the year but they refused to do this for Stormsunder. And to think this is just wave 1 so not even the full game.

Oh man I love Aeon Tresspass Odyssey. Liked it so much I went all in on Sins of Herc, picked up the core pledge of Kingdoms forlorn and Kingdom Death. Its such a epic game but thats also its downfall. I think it plays best at 1 or 2 unless you know 3 or 4 players who really love long narration. Last play finished around 10 days and a fight in around 3 hours. Oathsworn is my go to recommendation for boss battlers. Such a great story and accessible game play. Im not far into Kingdom death but so far I am really likeing it. I found Massive Darkness 2 to be too simplistic and I really hated the bloated minatures where they are used as a health marker instead of doing something interesting. Arydia I had to pass on as I have far too many campaign games. Im looking forward to Stars of Arkadia 2.0. I played 1.0 a little bit and I certainly saw something good there but got distracted by Oathsworn and never went back to it. I am perplexed that stornsunder still isnt on a boat to backers.
I saw that Aeon Trespass works better as either solo or at lower player count but gave up on it. I'm looking forward to Stars of Arkadia as I don't see a game similar to it.
I have Tanares and League of Dungeoneers coming from their crowd funding. Have you played Dungeon Crusade by Groovus Games Unlimited. I recently received it, but haven't played it yet. GGU is working on a quicker to table/play version. So if 3-4 hours for a game is too long, the new version might be one to consider. Thanks for sharing your liked dungeon crawlers. We seem to have very similar likes.
Just started a traveler group with a friend DMing. Played Marvel Zombie. To me it plays as an easier version of the game. Maybe better as a entry level Zombicide for younger players. Wrapped up Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion. Very good. Got Wingspan and Flamecraft for Christmas. Both fun games.
@@gaminggeek241 i did the original campaign and it came with hyperion. I wish I got more after the fact. And I love black rose rebirth so the more content that bounces between both the better
ISS Vanguard is my campaign game of the year (even tho it came out in 2022). The story and plot are both crazy! Super epic, and the ship book phase is very unique and fun. Looking forward to Tanares and Oathsworn 2E
Hey I have tanares ultimate. But I found a deal on massive darkness 2 all in. Would you recommend having both? I’m keep long tanares just want to know if you would recommend owning both.
Tanares is the better campaign but is long with around 30 scenarios. MD2 is better as one-offs rather than the campaign and feels really different than Tanares. So if you like one-offs, then grab it!
I would say oathsworn is good, but you complaint about ATO can be appied to oathsworn, the game is a railroaded adventure where your decisions do not matter at all. Good story yes. But it is a railroad, unless some how that changes after the 15th battle. Where I am. But I am guessing not. This does not make the game bad. ATOs problem is its complex for the sake of complexity. Do this add tokens, take cards out of deck add cards into deck, and the labyrinth mechanics of 2 of the "bosses" are not my favorite and are again overly complex, as to I, who reads rule books and plays lots of games, had to watch videos and reread the book to make sure we were doing it right. It is very unintuitive, and the rules don't help along the way. KDM is better, because, its rules systems do not get in its own way. Which personally I think ATO does do. I quite ATO after about 10hrs. When the third boss had the same gimick as the second with the labyrinth tiles. I just didn't have the want to do that 6 more times. Not sure it would be but.... I don't care to find out. ATO story seems neat, and there is definitely open world where you can explore. Those systems seemed neat to me. Anywho. We just started Taneres we are liking it so far.
Sounds like you bounced off 2 games that take a deep investment to play. ATO and DUN are games that you basically need to play exclusively for their duration if you want to enjoy them. They're both amazing, but if you try to juggle them with others you're probably going to have a bad time. They also skew heavily solo.
I have ATO as well, and my biggest gripe is that it feels like they just wanted all the mechanics in a single game. I'd much rather them dial a few things back and make what they have the very best it could be. I actually canceled my Kingdoms Forlorn pledge after playing ATO. I have two kids in the house and I don't own a gaming table. So setting up ATO and tearing it down was another big obstacle that I faced. Maybe once the kids are out of the house in 12 years, I'll have the time and space that it requires.
