One thing that was missing from the discussion is Nick's ability to pull everyone together. It's not just amateurs and the public. Nick has been bringing the work of a number of geologists to a wider audience and opening new conversations and collaboration between professionals too.
Congratulations Professor Nick! This unexpected video popping up today, literally brought tears to my eyes. The world needs more teachers with your style of teaching. I am 70 years old and in the past three years you have changed my life. When ever I;m feeling overwhelmed with life, I simply go back and watch one of your many videos. And you lift me up! Thank You and I want to thank your parents for teaching you how to teach.
This occasion deserves a toast! To Nick (and The Zentnerds)… Here’s to Parents and here’s to Daughters Here’s to coulees and Ice Age Waters Here’s to Bijou and his buddy Nick Whose rockin’ talks are pretty slick Here’s to strangers becoming friends Camaraderie that never ends We’re all together, on the rocks With Nick to thank, for these awesome talks Here’s to a blessing, in disguise Blazing forth with pale blue eyes A fun filled heart, that’s good and true Fearlessly telling us… “I Love You” It's been fun, these past few years We've shared laughs and we've shared tears And it's been great, so here we are Still hangin’ with our big rock star! CHEERS!
Not only do you so greatly deserve the GSA Public Service Award, but the State of Washington should also give you an award for increasing tourism to the state. Congratulations Nick !!
Most definitely. I'd never realised I was interested in rocks (or Washington) until I came across Nick's work. Inspiring and he should be on any Washington tourism board.
Because of Nick, I visited Washington state this March / April. Congratulations to Nick who haď given me the "Nick" name "The Dutch Night Owl" in the summer of 2020.
My husband and I were stopped on the roadside in Utah and another couple stopped to visit and they were from Spokane. As we visited for a few minutes we discovered we all loved Nick Zentner! Just a testament to how folks all over the country who are not geologists eagerly watch the videos Nick does. All ages from 8 to 90+ have been educated from his lectures and videos!
I had no idea I'd be interested in geology but I stumbled upon Nick few years back and I'm hooked. His method of teaching, his genuine humanity, gentle spirit and knowledge is endearing - I love him! He is such a giver. THANK YOU, NICK!!
I’m an old accountant from Sydney, Australia. What could I care about the geology of the Pacific North West? But the difference is Nick. It’s interesting, accessible, varied and educational. @occamsrazor5376 put it so well. I really do think that Nick loves us. And Nick, the feeling is mutual. Congrats on the award, it is well deserved.
Huge Congratulations to you, Professor Zentner!! 🎉❤ I've been following your lectures for 3 years, and I love them! Your style is engaging and you are never afraid to reach out to colleagues to learn something new and share it with all of us. You bring so much energy and enthusiasm to a field that so many of us are curious about. Bravo! You are a legend already!! 😊❤
I couldn't be more happy to see 'our' Nick get recognized by the GSA for his wonderful teachings and doing so in a style that reaches so many of us. I'm new to the Pacific Northwest and he has opened my eyes and my mind to the story of geology in the area I now call home. Well Done Nick! Bill O'Neill from Payette Idaho.
Thanks to Scott Burns for his continued nomination of you, Nick, and congratulations on your Public Service Award. It is well deserved. I believe you are correct in your "community" assessment, but it is also more than that. Your Zentnerd community appreciates you, and each other, and we also appreciate the opportunity to deep dive into geologic science with you at the helm. I'm ok sounding like the proverbial broken record when I reiterate that learning geology through you brings me joy. Congratulations!
Congratulations Nick, well deserved. I started watching your lectures many years ago and have followed all your series. I love rocks and volcanoes, but you make things really easy to understand and very entertaining. My kids are becoming interested too! Love your work all the way from Australia!
Congratulations, and yes, we know these accolades are not why you do this! Never have I ever had a professor teach like you, nor one who exhibits your compassion for this whole discipline! The more we know, the better we are with this kind of knowledge. IMPRESSIVE!!!
Really well deserved Nick! You certainly have lit a fire under this 70 year old. One of these days I will make it out there and sit in one of your lectures!
Keep doing what you’re doing, with all the passion and humility the subject needs and the people want and expect! Good on you , and we echo your deserving this award from your fellow earth scientists and your friends around the world!!
Very well deserved, you are a phenomenal tutor who showed me a side of life on Earth that I never realised fascinated me so much. I've had 4 splendid educators in my almost 7 decades and you are one of them.
Congratulations, Nick! This is amazing recognition, and well deserved! Your Downtown Lectures were my first opportunity to experience your style, and I loved them. When we all got hit with Covid and you started livestreaming from your backyard, I was there for it, happy to learn more. You've come a long way since then, establishing a strong presence and perfecting your unique style - engaging, open, and humble, lifting up the subject you speak of (be it geology or your guests) instead of yourself. Thank you for the wonderful talks, interviews, and presentations. Here's to many, many more!
A++ Nick! I’ve been watching your videos for a few years and find your tone and ability to share your knowledge with us absolutely right on target! Thank you so much for your many contributions to our understanding of the wonderful phenomena of geology! You genuinely deserve the award!
Congratulations, It’s well deserved. For the son of rockhounds in the eastern US, you’ve helped me understand more about the part of the world in which I live. I remember in the late 1970s and early 80s exploring the northwest and wondering how it all got here. You’ve helped in so many ways to expand that understanding.
You deserve it! I learned so much from you, and have even inspired a few trips to Washington from Calgary Alberta! Climbed in the Cascades and many of the volcanoes. Loved seeing your teachings and the history in person! Thank you.
Congratulations Nick. I am absolutely 1 of those "non geology" people who really is interested in the subject but took a much different career path 40 years ago. Your enthusiasm for what you teach and speak about is very infectious. I'm learning as I watch and listen, cool stuff! Just for fun, I like it. You should take a moment and be proud of what you are doing and have done in the past, I can only imagine how many really enthusiastic geology and geoscience professionals you have had a significant hand in creating. Good for you! Great Award to be recognized with.
This couldn't happen to a more deserving person. Very well done, Nick. You have brought geology to non geologists. We can't look at road cuttings the same way.
Heart felt congratulations Nick. Many thanks for helping preserve my sanity during the lockdowns of '20-'22. A well deserved Award. With love from Australia.
More than well deserved. You're our PNW treasure. I've said before, I wish all my profs had been like you. I don't always retain everything you've taught over the Livestreams but I'm amazed at what I have learned. And how I look at rocks differently now. Thanks for that Nick. A huge Congratulations for a deserved award.
Congratulations, Nick. We're so glad you stepped up and accepted the award. It is important to be looked up to by one's peers when one is especially deserving of the recognition. Very happy for you.
Congratulations. You do a service for us all, helping us to learn new, interesting, and challenging things, and do it in a way that still makes those challenging things accessible. This is an award that's well deserved. Thank you for allowing us to celebrate it with you.
Congratulations Nick, im so proud of you and I can't think of anything one else who is more deserving for this award than you. Thank you for the years and hard work you've done for free
Such a thoroughly well deserved award. That's a really lovely photo of Mr Zentner. It captures his disposition. Though not even his videos of himself captures just how tall he is. I didn't grasp that until he mentioned it - just for scale purposes, not to boast! - in an outdoors video he was making. It was neither his Roadside or On the Rocks series that first riveted my attention. It was the lectures- evening lectures to non students from the surrounding area - that utterly gripped me. The first I watched was on the Columbia River Flood Basalts. It wasn't even that long ago, but it changed my life. I know that sounds overly dramatic and silly. But it's quite true. I'm disabled. An inherited neurological problem, a movement disorder. Almost all of my life is now spent lying on my back, my head and knees propped up, my hand resting on my stomach holding a pc mouse with which I can control a pc near my bed. I am very lucky, as this means I'm able to take advantage of the content on RU-vid. That first Nick Zentner lecture I watched was so good, so clear, and well explained, but also so extraordinary and fascinating, it set me on track of dedicating my time to learning as much as I could about geology, the earth's history, paleontology, & archeology. I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, but I know more about the landscapes of that region than I do the area where I reside. I feel happy and excited each day, looking forward to what new things I'll be able to be taught, to learn about. My body doesn't go anywhere, but thanks to Mr Zentzer's intelligence, his enthusiasm for his subject and for education, and his skill in communicating, my mind travels all around the world and even through time, every day.

Congratulations Nick!! An award very much deserved! Thank you for all of your contributions! I'm grateful for all that I have learned about our Pacific Northwest geology thanks to you!
Prof Nick has touched the lives of many thousands of people. His love of this earth and geology is easy to see. Personally, I have learned so much from him and will watch his teaching videos as long as he produces them. He's the college professor I wish I'd had when I was in college.
Congratulations Sir Nicholas. Nobody I can think of deserves this award more than you. I started watching your presentations over a year ago, and I still can't get enough.
I was born and raised in Michigan. I’m now retired and live in Georgia. I visit the west coast several times annually. Started watching Nick on RU-vid a little over a year ago. I’ve learned so much from Nick’s channel that my visits west have taken on a whole new dimension. No longer do I just take pics and enjoy the views. I feel like I’m on a field trip instead of just passing through with my smartphone camera at the ready. Congratulations Nick. Well deserved.
I rarely miss an episode, live or in replay. I have always, in my 85 years, been interested in rocks/geology and Nick has expanded and deepened. my knowledge and understanding. A well deserved award!
Congratulations to Nick for his GSA Public Service Award! His enthusiasm and love of Geology has impacted a lot of people, and we appreciate his gift to us ❤️
Very well deserved! Your true contribution goes well beyond the scope of this award. For example, some of your videos with Randy Lewis combine geology with empathic ethnography. Pure magic. Let yourself be proud and inspired by your growing and profound influence in the world.
CONGRATS 🎉🎉 I've watched so many of your videos over the years and I've learned so much about my local geographical history thanks to you, super happy to see this award given to you 🎉🎉
Nick has a way of speaking to a world audience and making us all feel that we are right there in the third row of his classroom. I'm pretty sure it isn't just me taking notes. Congratulations, Nick!
Nick, Congrats, this award validates all the great work you do and one can tell you love your work. I know you are a humble person, but this award will always mean something not only to you and your wife (and cat 😺), but to all of us that have learned so much from you. I started following you several years ago now, when l discovered you on RU-vid and although physical issues due to an accident about 8 years ago, have prevented me from traveling to Ellensburg to attend your public lectors, and from going on field trips, l watch 99% of them, some several times. I also enjoyed your Nick on the Rocks and the 2 Minute Geology series. I have turned others on to you, who like me, have an interest in geology. Again, congrats!! John R. June Kent, WA.
