How is it that no one on the panel that picked Scream could clearly explain why it was revolutionary for horror? It saved the genre. Horror was pretty much a joke in the early to mid 90's with mainstream audiences. All the big horror franchises had fizzled out and become parodies of themselves and we were getting stuff like Dr. Giggles, Ghost in the Machine, and mediocre King adaptations save for Misery. Scream was both a love letter to and a refreshing satire of the genre. While it wasn't the first horror film to contain meta commentary (see New Nightmare 2 years earlier) it created a blueprint that all others after either referenced or imitated. And The Blair Witch Project was boring in 1999 when and I first watched it and still boring when I watched it about 5 years ago. A massive re-evaluation of that movie is long overdue.
