The base trim also comes with blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert, advanced forward collision avoidance, lane keep assist, lane follow assist and rear parking sensors. It has features like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a smart power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, 12.3” digital driver display, driver seat memory, a power passenger seat, the Harman Kardon sound system and 18” wheels. In the US, there are three trims, the base model for $27,290 USD is standard FWD, AWD is available for $1,800 USD. This trim comes with an 8” touchscreen, a 12.3” driver display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front seats and a tire repair kit. The middle EX trim for $30,990 USD comes with a 12.3” touchscreen, a heated steering wheel, a power driver seat, wireless charger, blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert and a temporary spare tire. Add the EX Premium package for $1,500 USD to get the panoramic sunroof and smart power tailgate. The top SX Prestige for $36,190 USD has similar features we have on the Canadian top trim. Fuel economy is excellent, 6.1L/100 km, 38 MPG city and 6.3L/100 km, 38 MPG highway. The Sportage hybrid AWD has 8.3” of ground clearance and the FWD model in the US 7.1”. I appreciate Zack's consistent acknowledgement that not every buyer out there has CAD$40,000 to purchase a new vehicle. It's nuts to me how often that number seems to be thrown out there as the _starting_ point of any vehicle.

Interestingly, the larger a channel gets the more it has to consider the statistical axiom that most subs can't (actually) afford most of the vehicles reviewed.. yet the subs are there in the first place to see what's new from OEMs and to dream about what they would buy via a $ windfall. Management of ego bruising your followers vs. maintaining content freshness/appealing to more primal human triggers.

I think this channel does a very good job of reviewing cars most people can actually afford. Sure once in a while they have some high end stuff but it’s nice to acknowledge there are people out there that can spend 150k on a car as well and that’s ok. Then there is the used buyer. These vids 3-4 years from now become a great resource for that research when looking at used cars.

He brought it up so many times that you can tell it’s a very important issue to him. You used to be able to get a lower end German luxury for around $40k. Not anymore. $40k is becoming the new $30k within just a few years.

The Korean twins are absolutely nailing this segment. This Sportage is a bit too ‘Sporty’ looking for my taste, but I have to give credit where credit is due. Besides, as my Mom always says (that) “its on the inside that counts”, and this is where I feel this KIA shines. Well done them! Thanks for the video.

Another "hit it out of the park" review, thanks so much Andrea and Zack! I love the Couples Car Reviews, you play off each other so well. Great review folks! Interesting that you compared it to the Venza. I have a 21 Venza Limited and consider the Sportage (Andreas pronunciation) in SX form more upscale, luxurious, having better tech and even better driving than the Venza. Though you trade a little mpg. 41-38 is a trade off worth taking. I’m looking at this same color scheme and model in the US. Cheers

Honestly I would say the Venza looks way better on the exterior and the Sportage looks more elegant in the interior. I still wouldn’t trade my 21 Venza limited for a sportage. I honestly think the sportage exterior looks goofy 🤪

I had a 2012 Hybrid Sonata (Sold this year) with automatic transmission. Drove 184K in GTA and Kingston area, not a single problem. Amazing car. Really loved the ownership experience. The current owner already put 30K without a single issue. I know Toyota has been doing it for a long time but Hyundai/Kia has been doing it for over 10 years. If Tesla opens it charging network to Hyundai and Hyundai can build EVs fast enough we might see very strong competition between Tesla and Hyundai.

Let's say you toggle through climate control to adjust the temperature. If you don't touch the panel after a few seconds, it will automatically go back to the media panel.

The korean hybrids are probably safer buys than the gas models. That 1.6 litre turbo has been around for a bit. It's one of the better engines from the stable as far as reliability is concerned. It doesn't have the same rep as the 2 litre and 2.4 litre. Take my word for it, buy any turbo engine, change the oil more often than the manual says(I found 8000kms to be a good number with my old car), and use good full synthetic oil.
@SingletonD
@SingletonD 2 года назад
Its a turbo engine used for a HYBRID MODEL. Its going to be turning on and off all the time. The wear and tear on it is going to be nuts. There is a reason why CVTs are good in a hybrid setup. It is also a first generation hybrid. Its going to be trouble.
@ghenry85
@ghenry85 2 года назад
@@SingletonD Explain why a turbo in a Hybrid is so much worse than a non turbo as far as durability. Good turbo engines exist, and any hybrid is going to turn the engine on and off regardless of the engine design. Maybe there's something I'm missing. I do agree that cvts in the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid is the best idea for the Hybrid system. It's very simple mechanically and it does do a great job responding to changes and keeping the engine in it's optimum efficiency range. I think in the Rav 4 hybrid, slightly more powerful electric motors in the front transaxle would add more refinement to acceleration(Easy to live with, but they are odd). The "standard" automatic transmission(like in this Kia) can be very reliable, and I understand why some people prefer the system of the Toyota cvt, it behaves more "normal", and there's no obvious reason why this transmission cant be adapted for hybrids. You'll probably give up a little efficiency, but get a vehicle that accelerates like a gas version. Will there be teething problems? Probably. But I'd guess that this hybrid system will get improvements will become a very popular option with good reason.
@SingletonD
@SingletonD 2 года назад
@@ghenry85 This is also a GDI turbo engine. It will have horrible carbon buildup is because the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, rather than injected in the intake manifold directed at the back of the valve stem. Carbon buildup can also be the result of engines not reaching the optimal temp. for the fuel to burn properly. So short trips where the engine has not been on for long makes the problem worse. Since the engine turns on and off al the time I can only guess at how bad it will be.
@ghenry85
@ghenry85 2 года назад
@@SingletonD Okay point taken. Funny thing is they have gdi with port injection as a non hybrid model. I was baffled why they didn't use that engine in the hybrid.

I did my deposit for a RAV4 Prime SE in May last year, last month my dealer told me the wait is expected to be 18-24 months. I am now looking for alternatives, and I really like the interior of the Kia PHEV - not that much a fan of the angular LED running lights though. My only concern, this will be a vehicle that I expect to be driving for the next 15 years. I believe Toyota might give me this but how about the reliability of the Kia/Hyundai? Andrea did mention her mother driving the Hyundai Tucson PHEV without any issues for 6 months.

We have air conditioning / heating as the default. And while I'm driving I control most of the media through the steering wheel by using me mode button and the star button. I am really liking Kia designs the last couple years. I like both the interior and exterior look of this Sportage. BUT, my biggest concern would be with the turbo engine and especially with putting a turbo engine with a hybrid system. After watching the video about turbo engines on the Car Help Corner channel, I would be wary of the long term reliability of the Sportage and the Tucson Hybrids. It would be great if they came with a NA engine and hybrid combination. We are still loving our Venza Limited Hybrid and over the first year, we are now averaging 6.3 L/100km. Thanks for the great video. We always love watching your reviews and seeing the sites around Vancouver. Oh, and like Zach, I'm looking forward to the new Niro Hybrid. Hopefully it will come with a NA engine. A vehicle that would be perfect for my mom.

I cant tell you the last time I used my turn nob in my truck, which has it on the steering wheel. So in my mind, the center screen will almost always be set to the temp. control.

I’m just getting used to mine as that toggle feature can be very distracting. I have been using the volume and track feature from the steering wheel. Just need to get used to it. I may have it Pre set so it defaults back to whichever I chose. 🤙

I think the biggest deal breaker with the Rav4 right now is the wait time. When I was consulting with my local Toyota dealer, the wait time on a Rav4 Hybrid was expected to be anywhere from 1 in a half to 2 year wait. The Tucson and Sportage, I was looking at a 5-8 month waiting period. Still not great, but it made the decision pretty easy. I went with the Tucson, because yes I want those extra features like the 19" wheels. the bigger infotainment system and the Bose speakers. But yeah this Sportage still seems impressive.

I think Zach is spot on about hybrid car pricing. I feel like if your not upper middle class they pretty much don’t want our business. Otherwise take the bus I guess or stay with your current car.
@andreaspencer9813

There are two great affordable options, this Sportage Hybrid and the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, both have excellent starting prices. The Ford Escape Hybrid also has an affordable starting price but it does have reliability issues. When Zack and I review affordable hybrids, we give those manufacturers props for producing them. Kia could have followed Hyundai's path with the Tucson Hybrid coming in over $41,000 CAD as a starting price, but they didn't.

You can also turn up the volume on the steering wheel although not as satisfying. Other thing is that they can use media and maps through the top homepages larger touch icons and keep climate control menu on the bottom row for the most commonly used.

It’s not just if someone can find a way to afford a car, it’s also if it’s smart to spend so much on today’s vehicles. Instead, maybe we should invest more and prepare for a day when life pitches us a serious, heart wrenching, curveball.

I initially wanted to get a rav4 hybrid. But their 10 month wait time for hybrid and 24 months for a prime steered me to get this. Just waiting untill next moth until they announce the price for PHEV. So that I could weigh against the federal and provincial rebates to see if that is a better option

@@andreaspencer9813 People will still buy it and the RAV4 over the Sportage but as mentioned, the Sportage has more features and I’m 100% sure it’ll cost way more. The Old CR-V (2022) model costs more than the new Sportage so just imagine how much the new one will cost, especially on those top trims where you make you spend more money to get the hybrid! For the normal working class people, cars need to get back to being under 25k. The only ones buying these at 40k range are lease companies, rental fleets. The worker folks are ALL on the used car market. For example. My “newest” vehicle is 18 years old … because that’s what we can afford and willing to spend I a vehicle. My point? We the people will not be driving these level of vehicles until 10-15 years from now when they are under the 20k price, meaning used market.

No we don't silly.. You guys sound like everyone else. You don't sound like Hoseheads eh? lol Oh, and while I'm here, I was all set on the Rav4 without ever considering Kia.... Until you had mentioned the Kia in a Rav4 video. I was like KIA???? Seriously? so I started doing my own research, and wow.. I'm impressed. Now if they would just make the Niro Hybrid a little more like a smaller Sportage. lol great mpg, but fwd only, and why not give it that turbo? just chop off some of the back end of the Sportage, and set the tail like the Niro with AWD, and all the fun packages of the Sportage, they would blow the market away.
