2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB SUV Review: A Practical SUV That Falls Short as an EV

When building electric vehicles (EVs), automakers can either develop a dedicated platform from the ground up; or they can adapt an existing gas-powered vehicle for all-electric operation. The latter method is quicker and cheaper, but often comes at the cost of sacrificing interior space - and even efficiency.
In the case of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB SUV, modifying the small-but-spacious GLB-Class to serve in an emissions-free capacity does little to impact the impressive interior dimensions it offers. However, it comes up short in at least a few areas that are essential to the EV experience itself.
AutoTrader.ca Road Test Editor Dan Ilika reviews Mercedes-Benz's compact electric crossover. With impressive practicality, performance, and style, is the EQB compelling enough to sway EV buyers who may have other criteria in mind?

Picking on little things. The one pedal driving, its 99% one pedal.I do it all the time in the EQB, whats the issue when you have to hold the break in traffic? The range - 230 miles in the UK, I have a home charger and is a game changer. How often do you ride 230 miles one way?

Thanks Dan for this very honest sounding review. I agree with you on all the points raised. Hopefully years down the road manufacturers and governments (maybe drop the rebates and concrete on charging infrastructure?) will make ownership of the EV much more pleasant experience. For now, I would stick with the ICE version of this vehicle (unless it is a secondary vehicle or you mostly charge at home and typically drive for under 200km trips) until we have a better charging infrastructure and EV technology is improved (batteries with higher capacity, one pedal driving, usable frunk space and of course more affordable prices and availability). Thank you to all the early adopters of EV tech! Without you it will take even longer for things to improve!

We really are still at the early adoption stage of EVs, and I don't think a lot of folks out there realize it - including ones working at the OEM level!

In practice, how often do you drive 300 km or more in a day? For the vast majority of people, that's never or very rarely. I have an hour commute each way and a 300km range has been fine. I feel that car reviewers always rely on public charging while the majority of EV owners have a charger at home. If you charge your car at home, you will never notice the range. Car reviewers obsess over range, which is why most people get a car with the longest range for their first EV. For their second EV, they get the car they want instead because they realize it really doesn't matter. As for one pedal driving, it has no impact on efficiency and is more of a gimmick than a feature. Yes you can get used to it, but in every EV not made by Tesla the brake pedal uses regenerative braking so the impact on range is either minimal or non-existent.

Dan, On the general question of range, how much range do late adopters lose on winter blend gas?

I’m not sure what you mean, but it’s certainly not an apples-to-apples comparison looking at gas vs. electric power.

@@danilika9420 The loss of range BEVs experience in cold weather simply reminded me that ICE cars lose efficiency in the cold as well .

@@rightlanehog3151 Ah, gotcha. Although I’ve never experienced a gas-powered vehicle that’s 25-30 per cent less efficient in the cold, whereas that’s fairly common with EVs.

Low temperature is a big enemy of EVs and their range. I don't fully understand why one pedal driving is such an important feature, especially when it is well known that if you don't use your brakes you will most likely need to replace brake discs, pads and calipers very often due to corrosion.

But the simple solution to avoid brake service from lack of use is to simply switch to the mechanical brakes for the last few kilometres of your daily commute.

Why do you do these reviews just to rag on the car? People watch because they like the car, just because somebody like you doesn't like it makes no difference.
