Same power as a motorbike but with more protection….I’m sure it would find buyers

Reality check needed. A 3 in todays test would actually be quite good prior to the recent reset of the standards.

It is suitable as a city commuter and for grocery shopping. Good for parking, too. Price will be its big selling point as well as being an ev. I hope it comes to Australia.

Basically it is an updated i-MiEV, and there is a devoted following of Australians driving the i-MiEV in OZ. Fantastic little EV's, where the more time you spend in one the greater your appreciation for it! Apart from the safety differences, Australians are desperate for an AFFORDABLE EV. One with out all the expensive (unnecessary) bells and bloody whistles. On the highway, traveling between cities, Brisbane to Gold Coast, or country drives Brisbane to Boonah, my old 2010 i-MiEV does okay! (I have an aftermarket battery upgraded with a 220 k range) I am sure the new eK X will do better. One thing you could have noted on the eK X. The rear seat in on a very clever slide system. Slide it forward for more cargo space, or slide it back for more leg room in the back seat for over sized Aussies! I sure would look at updating my i-MiEV for an eK X.

It's a shame the battery is pretty much the same as the imiev though. In Europe, Dacia brought out the Spring, which is similar size (although follows conventional hatchback design rather than Kei car "box" styling) and price range, but has a 28kw/h battery, which makes it just that bit more flexible. If Mitsu could bring this model up to the 30kwh mark it be great - as you could do pretty much any reasonable day commute in any weather (or with hills etc) without having to worry about charging away from home. Otherwise, it's absolutely ideal. If those back seats fold true flat like in the old imiev, even better. They were *SO* practical.

OZ Electric Vehicles has an aftermarket 30 kWh battery pack for the i-MiEV. I upgraded mine in 2021 and am enjoying a 220+ kilometre range. Why can't Nissan and Mitsubishi offer the same, @@Syulang-nt4kj

Cute, it reminds me of my old Colt which was a fantastic, little car. It'd make for an excellent second, run-around car.

Our cities are built around commuter rail rather than metros, and our "last mile" urban transport planning is, to be honest, complete crap, with the notable exception of Perth. Compact, highly efficient EVs like this are a good way to cover those last mile breaks for commuting, and also for other city jobs like groceries (I had the older iMiev kei-size EV from Mitsu, and with the back seats down these cars are *excellent* for carrying shopping, parcels, stuff for the garden/DIY - so much so they did a light van version). Yes, crash compatability is an issue, but we're thinking about this back to front. We need to update the ADR rules to encourage smaller, more efficient cars in cities. We can have smaller, lighter vehicles that are perfectly capable for the things we need. A small to mid size hatchback can tow a caravan (Europeans do this on extremely long journeys from places the Netherlands and Germany down to the Mediterranean, crossing the Pyranees or Alps en-route all the time), and even very capable off-road vehicles don't need to be large - as Suzuki has consistently taught us. There will always be a place for larger cars and utes, especially in remote regions, but we need to think about hwo we regulate vehicles in our cities, and also how we approach transport planning, because what we've got right now doesn't work that well - Perth has been doing excellent work on this, and really is showing us the way forward - we just need to roll that out in other states, and think about how we can continue to build on and improve these early steps. Or... we can do a Sydney and try and build our way into more congestion with half-baked toll road projects.

We need smaller cars to become the norm. If your justification for needing a bigger car is that everyone else has a bigger car it starts to look a lot like an arms race. If it had a real world range of around 200km it'd sell like hotcakes. 120km isn't quite enough to comfortably reach the city and back from the outer Melbourne suburbs.

I think this vehicle could work in many cities and large regional towns in Oz. Ide buy one in Townsville just for the city commute but still keep my Mahindra XUV500 W10 for family and holidays

Don't you remember i-Miev the electric kei car discontinued long ago for being an expensive kei car with weak electric range, obsolete rear drum brakes and not much airbags whilst so-called ADR restricts imported kei cars indefinitely.
@annavariumful
@annavariumful 6 месяцев назад
Remember? I'm quite happily driving one now. Lots of smaller modern cars have drum rear brakes. Produced in 2009 it was the first production EV of the modern era. Battery technology was limited back then and expensive. For it's time it was a great achievement. PS: Mine is still going strong 13 years later!!

@@annavariumful You're missing the point this ironic kei eK X is not available at the Mitsubishi dealer in Australia anytime soon because Mitsubishi focuses on 4WD Sport Utility Vehicles and Utes than hatchbacks last since Mirage was axed by the ADR investigated over vulnerable side impact structures and obsolete drum brakes.

Your pricing is based on the literal exchange of Yen to Aus dollars. If brought to Australia it wouldn’t be 30k. Everyone knows that. Surely a car journalist knows that, too. It would likely be 40-45k, after import and tax duties applied.

The byd dolphin is 39890 so this car should be at 35k to 36k drive away. This car need to come before the Chinese ev onslaught take massive mindshare on the Australian motorist. Look at the mg3 already

As a mental health support worker I spend over $150 a week on travel my only issue is the range I would have to charge it every night. The other problem is charging stations. Westfield shopping centres should consider EV charging stations in their multi storey carpark. This would make this little car more effective and solve some of the range problems.
@YassineSouilmi

The problem isn’t the size of this car, it’s the faux level of confidence given by the stupidly huge utes and suvs sold today.

Its amazing how we pride ourselves in moving forward with technology but yet cant seem to build an electric car for under 30k with a range of 500km and above.

I have seen video footage of the rigid passenger cell in crash testing. I think it holds up well, despite its diminutive size. 5 Stars in Japan and that should be good enough if you are coming from an older ICE car and looking for an entry EV in Oz. Need to keep in mind the reasons why it might only be given 3 Stars in Australia. Ditch some of the driver aids and heated seats/steering wheel and get this down to AU$25k drive away. If thats doable, then I think it will sell well to an informed public looking for an urban runabout.

Bad news!!! A Dacia Spring Electric is rate ONE STAR from Euro Ncap. Mitsubishi EK X EV and Nissan Sakura on the other hand.... don't know that's a mystery for the time being but they're NOT using the Renault CMFA-EV which Dacia Spring Electric is using. If this Japanese kei car is safer, I hope Renault is learning from this!
