I’ve spearfished my whole life growing up in Tahiti. I often encounter black tips, lemon sharks, hammerheads and some sometimes tiger sharks. They usually don’t bother me much, though if a tiger hangs around too long, I get back on the boat. However once in a while we’ll encounter a oceanic white tip. With those, we don’t hesitate 1 second! Back on the boat ASAP! It don’t matter how many of us are fishing. So if you’re looking for what you did wrong there, the answer is simple: not getting out of the water right away and go diving in a different spot. 🤷🏽‍♂️
@Abebe345

With a speargun, why are you that afraid of them? Can you explain further what makes the oceanics so different? What about great white sharks? Not a diver but interested in wildlife.

@@Abebe345 the oceanic white tips will swim right by you multiple times as if you weren’t even there, and they don’t try to sneak up on you, they’re just all over you in the water and way more agile and flexible than a great white to take a little bite out of you, which is really all is needed to slowly kill you.

Those oceanic white tips are the bull sharks of the open ocean. They are just as dangerous as a Great White, and as tenacious as a Bull Shark, but are mostly found in more open waters. When the Indianapolis went down it was mostly White Tip Sharks that took the men. Rod Temple (as most know on here) was killed by 2 Oceanic White Tip sharks who would NOT give up. When we think of true movies like Open Water and fatal shark attacks, we are most likely dealing with Oceanic White Tips.
@surfrider986
@surfrider986 Год назад
Listen very carefully, Renee, I shall only say this once. Bull sharks are the Bull sharks of the open ocean, they can be found up to depths of 150 meters even if they are usually found in shallower waters. Nobody knows for sure which species of sharks was responsible for most deaths in the USS Indianapolis incident. It's 'whitetip' not 'White Tip', Open Water was a film based on the Lonergans whose deaths were most likely caused by Tiger sharks spotted in the area, if they didn't drown. Most recorded fatal attacks are by Great White sharks, Oceanic whitetip shark numbers have greatly declined over the last 50 years.
@reneesantiago6496
@reneesantiago6496 Год назад
@@surfrider986 I’ll say this ONCE back…….there is ZERO reason to get nasty or sarcastic on a shark channel. We are all here because we love sharks. We are all here to get educated, watch shark attack stories and chit chat. We are NOT here to get petty. My sincere apologies if I spelled Whitetip in the wrong form of the species. When speaking on Whitetip sharks I was just pointing out the Indianapolis and possibly more open water ship wrecks. I absolutely was NOT claiming that their numbers on attacks is anywhere near a Great White or the other 2 for that matter. I am also not stating that Bull Sharks aren’t found in the more open ocean either. Most of the attacks that I personally have read about concerning Bull Sharks have been closer to shore, rivers and places where freshwater meets salt water. Of course I’m sure an attack on any species can happen anywhere. Again, this is just what I personally have knowledge on. I am 100% fine with others correcting me or just sharing different knowledge…….but what I WONT do is have a back and forth with a jerk who is rude. No way! These channels are for fun and getting educated on a subject we all love. It should be friendly, and sir you are not friendly. 🦈🦈🦈

According to a marine biologist these sharks are the most dangerous of all sharks. It’s just that they don’t come into contact with people as often as tiger bul and GWS. But these divers done many mistakes by turning their back, splashing, being alone in the open water and swimming away after hitting it. Sharks approach from behind it’s their strategy for eating big prey.
@braveheart4603
@braveheart4603 Год назад
Indeed oceanic white tips have likely killed more humans than any other shark species. The open ocean has little food density so they have to be bold and investigate just about everything they come across as potential food. They also seem to have an uncanny ability to turn up when ships go down. I know i'd rather get taken out by an adult great white than one or more of these guys. They generally take their time coming in for small bites at a time which would be my worst mightmare.

I've been a scuba diver for 50 years & have dived in open water with most species that divers can normally encounter, Tiger, Bull, Great Hammerhead, but the main one that gets my attention never to take my eyes off it is the Oceanic Whitetip. They are way too pushy to ever feel safe. A good safeguard to fend off any shark IMO is what we used in January 2020 at Tiger Beach and Bimini in the Bahamas, when filming shark feeding by experienced dive guides,using a piece of stout, grey, plastic piping about 1.5" in diameter and about 3 feet long as a shark billy. That could be used in case either a Tiger, Bull or Great Hammerhead forgot the rules of the game and headed straight for you, so you'd dig the billy firmly in the sand directly in front of the shark to steer it away. In open water that's a different ball game but such a billy could be carried with a loop around the wrist for swift deployment, aiming for the snout, gills or eyes in extremis. A similar devise was advocated by the Australian legend Valerie Taylor when she and her late husband Ron Taylor were harrassed by an insistent shark while scuba diving in the Pacific in the early 1960's. In their case they used a spear gun to jab it in the gills which it apparently found most discomforting and suddenly realised it had urgent business elsewhere.

So good the attack was not deadly. A great free diver. Good advice of yours. Despite the pain, and agony, the shark’s encounter left an experience and knowledge you could share with people. It is our fault, we are invading their environment. 2. Never dive alone. That decision makes people easier to be attacked. 3. People must not feed sharks with food as cruisers or ships sometimes do. They approach the shallow waters then trying to get food, when there are not enough preys for feeding. Like the document. A brave attitude, and good responds. Eyes are vital to make them retired at least for some time.

Oceanic Whitetips are one of my favorite Sharks. Haha I like sharing what my favorites ARE 1. Bull 2. Tiger 3. Caribbean Reef 4. Oceanic Whitetip 5. Bronze Whaler. My top 5 with honorable mentions the Silky Shark, Great Hammerhead, and mother JAWS herself the Great White. My Marine scientist friends laugh saying yea you love all of the most dangerous Sharks which obviously Bull ranked 1, Tiger 2, and GW as top 3. GW’s come into shallow waters so they have that one BUT the Oceanic Whitetip should be at least in top 4 or 5 because if you ever find yourself in the water out in open ocean you can almost be guaranteed you are going to run into a Whitetip and yes you will be in trouble. One after another like the Caribbean Reef actually will do also, sometimes show up in packs and if you have any blood coming from your body that’s a wrap. What’s not to love about the Oceanic Whitetip!!!That big dorsal fin and airplane pectoral fins with what looks like each have been dipped in a bucket of white paint. So gorgeous. Oceanic Whitetips are not to be taken lightly. If encountered and the shark lingers and continues to swim around you, it will eventually come at you, and if it does, it's hungry, you're on the menu now and you either have to kill it. or remove yourself from the water. These sharks, like the bull shark, will continue to take pieces out of you until you bleed out and die then consume the rest of you at its leisure.

Then I would look around for the boat, and in a panicking state, would point at random waves while screeming "shark fin!". I would then struggle and flail at anything that come near me, pushing what ever, down into the water in an attempt to stay above the surface for as long as possible. The majority of times it's a hit and run attack, stiking once and leaving. I have seen video of them chasing spearos before, but it's normally as they are activley fishing. Many anglers in Florida complain of sharks eating their catch and showing up as soon as the boat does. It could be learned behavior. The one after you may have thought you were fishing, but it's hard to say for sure. Some boats bait sharks for tourists. Always dive with a buddy and make sure you have a tourniquet on-board. Plan for the worst, but enjoy the water and be safe! At one point the aussie govt was subsidizing shark shields. They're a pain in crotch but appear to work on big sharks.

@@TrackingSharks Thank you so much!!! ❤️ This has been in on my mind for years! Nobody had any lines in. It was purely a pleasure cruise on a fully equipped yacht. I’d just jumped in for a snorkel and glad I looked around 😂🦈 because he was coming up fast. He was at least 8 ft. You’ve really helped me a lot from an event that scared the 💩 out of me and also I’ve been trying to get other Aussies to understand (especially our blokes) that reef sharks are a threat. So I was happy when you did this video and I’m so so grateful you took the time to answer me! 🙏 ❤️

Great video, thank you! I’ve encountered white tip reef sharks numerous times, and always considered them very docile. I did have an experience when I was snorkeling in open water with a black tip off the coast of Tioman Island in the South China Sea. A group of us had planned to scuba dive a fern forest, but an equipment failure cause me to stay back by myself, and just snorkel. The black tip swam by and I thought he was just passing. But when he came back having circled around me, I became somewhat alarmed. I simply stared him down until he swam away, and this time, I made sure he didn’t return.

I want to know why in hell they have their training site unnecessary ½ a kilometer from the shore⁉️ 🤔 He said they've had 🦈 *multiple times* before this incident that means they should know their is *definitely* a risk of a bite... So why in the actual f•ck would you go _that far out_ just to practice holding your breath and *_without a boat_* to top it off⁉️ 🤯 His bites weren't even that bad and he barely maintained consciousness _even with_ a boat (very luckily) reducing half the distance he had to swim back to shore... If the random 🛥 hadn't been there or bote had been _any worse,_ he would've died for no other reason than deciding to practice _so freaking far out_ without a boat 💯

If i was in his spot, i would have kept my eyes on the shark and try to hit its sensitive spots (nose, eyes, and gills) only if it got too close. I dont know if this shark was trying to eat him. a predation event is a possibility, but It also could have been territoriality.🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈

No need to put the disclaimer if NOTHING is going to be show.
