Agreed and they absolutely should. There is no reason this shouldn't be getting the same technical noms that every high budget American war film has been getting in the last decade (Hacksaw Ridge, Dunkirk, 1917 etc). I don't think the categories are too crowded either - this should just be happening lol
@@calidofrio13 Opinion on the quality of the overall movie is irrelevant, I genuinely do not know a single person who thinks something like Devotion had a better or more memorable Score than Batman
@@taitavrit664 I think he meant it was his lock (meaning he picked it and is holding on to it), not trying to say it was a locked category. My pick for BP at the moment is Banshees of Inisherin
I’m just really happy Moonage Daydream got into the final 10 for sound. I’m not saying this means it’ll get a better chance of getting into Documentary Feature, but I hope it does coz it’s one of my favourite films from this year
I don’t know if you guys have seen Amsterdam (maybe not the best movie) but the makeup and hairstyling was phenomenal and I wouldn’t put it away. I’d nom it
Honestly, if you focus on the technicals of Amsterdam, there's a lot of worthy stuff you can nominate. The costumes, the production design, the hair and makeup, and original song. All 4 would be great nominations in my eyes!
honestly i kind of expected that RRR will loss out from VFX....ive been thinking about this since the beginning of the conversation....and the fact that it was actually nominated for VFX at the CC is just baffling....but im glad the Oscars sees that the VFX isnt good....although im hoping for RRR to get at least directing and original song nod...it pisses me off that India sent Last Film Show instead RRR but wowww...that was unexpected for Last Film Show to get shortlisted
It’s weird that Selena Gomez’s doc didn’t get shortlisted but the theme song from it did. Also, didn’t All too Well technically come out in 2021? I remember watching it on a plane on Christmas last year.
For Gomez, I don't think the Academy cares too much about pop stars except on Original Song, although interestingly, Billie Eilish's doc is shortlisted last year. The last doc from a popular musician I remember winning was the Amy Winehouse one. As per Swift, you are right, the short film first premiered on RU-vid. The reason why it is in the Oscar conversation and getting nominations from award-giving bodies is because it had its theatrical release on TIFF and Tribeca Film Festival just months ago, which is one of the things a short film, doc, and animated short needs to do in order to be eligible for an Oscar nom.
As a huge swiftie I’m not sad about the short film not making the list I’ve always viewed it as a mv and not a short film. Obviously I want Carolina to win but it’s going to be tough competition
Dust & Ash from the Documentary, The Voice of Dan & Ash is written by J. Ralph who has been Nominated for: Before My Time from Chasing Ice Manta Ray from Racing Extinction, with Anhoni & The Empty Chair from Jim: The James Foley Story, with Sting So other than Diane Warren, J. Ralph could get in here if the branch loves him.
@Pranav Veluri Well put. The way RRR is seen in India and the way it is perceived (about every aspects of the movie) outside, particularly in the west, is totally different, if not polarly opposite.
All Quiet on the Western Front has been my frontrunner for Best Director for months. Yes, it probably can't win anymore, but with the widespread love in the arts and techs, it's clearly going to get nominated as the auteur foreign pick. And I still wouldn't count out it's Best Picture nom chances. I've been doing this for over 15 years, I know how this goes. Just don't flip out when you hear Edward Berger's name called
I feel like the RRR hype for any Oscar recognition has been pretty overblown. Keep in mind, it took us till 2019 for any truly foreign-language film to win best picture. I've noticed a trend in the US recently to recognize Indian cinema more often, which is great, but any time a film produced in India is celebrated for anything, it's typically a "bro that movie was CRAZY". I get that a lot of films released out of India tend to have a bit more of a bombastic style, especially with Bollywood musicals, but there feels like a backhanded energy of like, disdain for these films. Like, nobody seems to take them seriously. I'm not bluntly calling racism, nor am I denying a film like RRR, a pretty bombastic and high-energy film any praise for being high-energy, BUT I just can't help but feel like we might have to wait a while for something along the lines of RRR to recieve a best picture nom. Which is sad, but I just don't feel like it was in the cards this year.
Dude it's industry racism in Hollywood. They celebrate their own overblown films but not foreign. Crouching tiger hidden dragon is once a blue moon thing. Plus oscar are not devoid of politics abd stereotypes about indian people with film like slumdog lion etc etc
@@sunnnysingh3498 i wouldn’t call it racism bro, but rather cultural unfamiliarity. Good art is good art regardless and appreciated everywhere... best example is parasite. RRR is still appreciated at many american film circles and won many awards, not just nominated, check the Wikipedia allocades sections. Only 10 shortlists were announced, still possibility for director and maybe even picture
@@sunnnysingh3498 yes so racism was much more prevalent then but they are becoming more tolerant now, our country is more racist to itself than America because of all the regional warfare and hate. The west started the campaign for RRRforOscars
I actually left out Doctor Strange (and to a lesser extent, Black Panther) from my nom predictions mostly because I felt so sure that the visual effects branch would be turned off by the films that a good portion of them were overworked on, and would actually give EEAAO and RRR an edge as a result. But since they didn’t make the shortlist, we might see Marvel pop up after all.
EEAAO will definitely get nominated for Editing- which is deserved- but I’m actually not surprised it’s not getting a lot of below the line stuff. Editing is the only one it really needs
@@cepho8349 I haven't seen the film yet, but I've seen/heard it called a remake of Cinema Paradiso by several knowledgeable sources. But perhaps they haven't seen it either and are just going off the description.
The people who are describing the 'last film show' as such are disgruntled fanatics of RRR and in their campaign for rrr they are ready to diminish anything. This speaks to why rrr wasn't submitted in the first place because although its a blockbuster it was not much regarded as a cinematic excellence. So when India itself, by its official submission, displays its lack of conviction on RRR and places its bet on Last Film Show, it will be seriously noted by academy. Obviously, the official submission 'Last film show' is meritorious in all aspects and its available in netflix for everyone to see for themselves
just discovered your channel today! was looking for someone who is crazy enough to do an Oscar shortlists reaction video :D great work, guys! you got a new follower
Okay maybe unpopular opinion but Batmans score was bad like yeah one Nirvana song cool but overall it was really bad , (maybe my movie theatre did a bad job)🤷♀️
Indies just don’t usually make VFX. Ex Machina is the exception. Also with the Marvel thing: whenever Doctor Strange is an a movie it’s the movie that gets a VFX nomination. They love those effects, it’s why Spider-Man: No Way Home made it into VFX. Black Panther is probably gonna get overshadowed by Avatar due to all the water stuff.
Idk, my theory is that the Oscars saw how popular No Way Home was with fans, but didn't like it that much and only threw a VFX nomination at it for catering.
@@EamonKelly I mean… a VFX nomination was it’s ceiling. Besides, even if we’re going off popularity Doctor Strange is the highest grossing MCU movie of the year. Which usually gets nominated with the exception of 2016… when Doctor Strange got nominated over Civil War.
Im curious if anyone is having doubts about Avatar 2 rightfuly winning best VFX. Like nothing will ever reach that level so i dont see any suspence there
@None why is that? Isn’t each category mutually exclusive because each category allows only for specific voters, directors vote for directors, sound designers vote for sound ,composers vote for composers, so just because rrr didn’t get nominated in these categories how does it affect chances of others since they are independent of each other?
@@sammytalluri1019 the directors branch would probably still put it under the bus BECAUSE it isn't going to be a big player in the ceremony. Literally almost no movies with very little exceptions can just get a director nomination, and RRR isn't strong enough to warrant just that nomination. They are separate entities/voters but there is still very strong correlations between getting nominated/shortlisted with actual nominations
@None hm well rajamouli has been awarded best director in an American film critics circle and been nominated as best director multiple times, let’s just hppe
Indian Film without any marketing and money got shortlisted in best foreign film category - The Last film show Pakistan Film without any marketing and money got shortlisted in best Foreign Film category - Joyland Cringe RRR with 2mn dollar marketing budget in US for awards only get best song nod... Lol
Stupid...RRR is competing in the general category... which has a very strong competition....and if india snd rrr as their official entry RRR would definitely win the best foreign film category...that much popularity it has all around the globe... Only official entries by the countries will be considered in the best foreign film category...
@@pokemonitishere202 no you're not right. you cannot diminish anyone by your sheer aspiration for an acknowledgement because you're already a loser with all these disgruntlement towards others. if you want to win, you have to humble yourself. okay? learn that. First learn to be humble, then vie for recognition then at least you will be taken seriously.
Before the shortlist, I had Avatar 2/The Batman/Dr. Strange 2/Nope/TGM getting in for VFX & now I feel confident in those 5 getting in. I have a feeling Amsterdam COULD make it in for Makeup at the Oscars. And I don't know what I should add to my 5th spot for Sound.
@@gabrielepotuto2939 The first Black Panther film missed VFX category, which makes me feel not confident its sequel will be getting in. And with exception to Thor 4, every MCU film that had Dr. Strange in it got nominated for its VFX work.
@@MrJoker3571 I'd argue neither of them will be nominated but if one has a chance it's black panther and there's a good reason why the first one wasn't nominated... The last fight's VFX was horrendous and also the fight with people in the background used to nominate king was. The same can't be said about this film with the water stuff and generally less but better VFXs
@@gabrielepotuto2939 And what’s going to demolish the second film’s chances is Avatar 2’s superior VFX work in the water. And Dr. Strange 2 has some weird, trippy VFX work that may sway voters into getting it in for the category.
@@MrJoker3571 i disagree the trippy VFX in doctor strange is gonna help, especially since there's major shitty looking shots in it, but it's not like I can swerve you, i think. That being said All Quiet on the Western Front is probably getting in instead of either marvel film
Biggest shock RRR not in score. MM keeravani used sanskrit rhyming in score a new inventiveness this year still academy snubs him. Same with visual effects
RRR score is not up to the par even with the one's which weren't shortlisted here. It's just a usual template music without much inventiveness and in India music in Rajamouli's movies are not much regarded as much it was for action set pieces and also because its usually an average music only revered by telugu speaking people as they are impoverished of diverse music innately. So, its not surprising, if anything, its totally fine.
@@KabiCL how many times we have seen sanskrit ryhming and shlokas used in composition. This is inventiveness you fool. So you are saying American critics are fool giving best score to mm keeravani LA critics Vegas critics
If India really made RRR the International feature, It could have had more than 6 nominations and possibly a Best Picture Lock.. No impact.. I would say Decision to Leave would win for Intl Feature.. If Leonor will never die was the Intl Feature of the Philippines, It could have been shortlisted atleast.. They went with the one that also has an Intl Emmy Nomination which is dumb..
Actually visual effects in "RRR" were pretty mediocre - it was the worst element of the movie, without a doubt. But I agree that the snub of "Everything Everywhere.." in 'visual effects' is kinda shocking.
I mean Superhero movies aren't my thing, and I personally feel that they haven't been that impressive in terms of story and tech, but please take my opinion with a grain of salt.
If you watch my early oscars predictions video I actually predicted that EEAAO would be snubbed from visual effects and makeup & hairstyle. I also had Michelle Yeoh being snubbed but I know that is not happening, I will have her for sure in my updated video. She is probably top 2 now. Also I can see Top Gun: Maverick being the big winner of the night even if it doesn't get BP. I can see it winning sound categories, visual effects and maybe cinematography. Film editing is also possible.
@@blackguyofthesouth2161 Not me. I don't belong to the academy. But they always make huge snubs that everyone is expecting to be a locked nomination. They do it every year. Last year they did it with Gaga when she was nominated in every awards circuit and she was being the number 1 contender to win in her category, and she was not even nominated in the Oscars. I'm pretty sure this year this is going to happen again in the acting category, maybe even in the male acting categories. Just a guess I'm having at the moment
@@yaeguuji1829 You are probably right. I haven't seen Avatar yet, so right now my vote is going to Top Gun Maverick, but I have a feeling I will change to Avatar once I see the movie. Everyone is saying it looks beautiful
VFX snub is too normal because all voting members basically have contracts with big studios so of course they would vote for these big blockbusters instead of an indie movie.
I never understood how All Too Well was eligible. I swear that came out in late 2021. So how would that even be eligible for the 2023 Oscars? EDIT: I just checked and it released on November 12th 2021. So like how is that eligible this year and not last year?
Full disclosure, I haven't seen Return to Seoul yet, but from what I've gathered, it is a French/English/Korean movie set in South Korea. Is that right? So how does it become Cambodia's submission for Best International Feature? The official language in Cambodia is Khmer not French/English/Korean. Is this what you guys call "category fraud". Is it fair to give South Korea an extra submission slot in Best International Feature? If that's the case then why doesn't India get multiple submissions for their different regions that actually use different languages that are official languages in the country?
The director is Cambodian and one of the production companies is Cambodian. It can be claimed as a Cambodian film and was submitted as such. Holy Spider is set in Iran with Iranian actors and an Iranian director but none of it was shot in Iran and all the production companies are European (Germany, Denmark, French, Sweden) which is how it became the Danish Oscar submission. None of this is fraud, it is just the reality of international coproduction these days. It doesn't matter where the film is set and the official language of the country also doesn't matter as long as the majority spoken in the film is not English. It could be a Cambodian film in which the characters speak Finnish and Spanish and it still qualifies.
Also Holy Spider was denounced by the Iran government because how it negatively it portrays the country. Iran is not happy that Holy Spider exists and they wish it wasn't as acclaimed lol
@@MrGMovieReviews I don’t even like Triangle and I think Triangle is way better. But hey no one will be motivated to watch Official Competition for any reason any more so whatever.
@None You know what india can never win oscars if they still make that type of movies , just look at korea and japan other international industries are doing so well but india has to put those indian shit like no physics and all and always love between the female lead and male lead at least bring something new we have been watching them for now 20 years .
