I've owned 3 Suzuki's in my life....all motocross from the 70's and 80's. I beat the hell out of them bikes and I could not kill them! Sounds like Suzuki still makes a great bike.

And I had a 96 intruder. They’ve been pretty consistent!

You did a very nice job with this review. I am your 6'4"+ and weigh about 270 lbs. I currently own a Victory Vision Tour which has been an amazingly reliable motorcycle, but living in South Dakota, I find myself running on more unpaved roads, so much so that I actually bought a steel skid plate to protect the underbelly of my Vic. It is amazing that I have never dropped this 900lb behemoth off pavement. I am seriously considering the DE 800 ADV as a replacement or second bike. At near 69 years of age, it would also be nice to shed to shed 400lbs off of my ride. There are other factors to consider. On an ADV you are going to need to change air filters more often. Most ADV bikes require you to dismantle the front console to do this. On the 800 series it is just under the seat and very easy to get to. It can be done in minutes. There only flaw is the windshield and lack of cruise control. I have since learned that both of these are correctable in the aftermarket. Suzuki is famous for reliability and general ease of maintenance and have a very loyal following. That speaks for itself!

First thing, thank you for the encouragement. (Love the Victory BTW) I appreciate receiving feedback like yours. Sometimes people agree and sometimes not. But I love sharing info about shared passions. I learn a lot too. There’s a balance concerning weight. With the V-strom, it felt heavy enough to be planted at higher speeds, but light and nimble too. A nice combo! I didn’t know this about the air filter but the bike is very accessible so it should make it easy to own and maintain. I’d be interested if you get it and if your opinions change afterward about ownership! Feel free to drop a line!

The gas mileage is north of 40 mpg, which can be nice.

@ne-adv THAT I didn’t know. Thanks for that. It really was a pleasant surprise to ride. I’d love for Suzuki to loan one for a longer time so k could be much more intentional and detailed. Maybe one day :)

I didn't see you use the quick shifter (don't pull the clutch, shift anyway) Comes in really handy when off tarmac, going up a rocky hill, when you lose momentum and need to down shift. I cannot say its more comfortable for long tarmac rides than a cruiser. My '00 Vulcan drifter 1500 is NOT comfortable, but most of the big Harley cruisers are as comfortable. Thanks for getting on one. 🙂

Great point! I really should have tried the quick shifter. To be honest, that feature hasn’t been one I’ve ever used in other riding som it’s just a matter of not being as familiar. I also ride a Goldwing where I failed to try it. So bad on me I guess. I also don’t use cruise control much and so I tend to overlook it too! My perception is changing about ADV bikes for sure. Probably my next one!

@@AnywhereRider Not to worry. I was hoping a cruiser rider would comment on it. See a lot of ADV/Dual Sporters loving it, but a cruiser is a much bigger chunk of metal, so was curious how it performed for a not-dirt-orientated rider. I hope you get a chance to in-depth it for a longer period.
