This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2023 Toyota Highlander with an all-new engine.
The updated Toyota Highlander has a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 264 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada, FWD and AWD options are available on all trims in the US. This Toyota Highlander model has 31 horsepower less than the V6 Highlander, but more torque, an extra 47 lb-ft and torque is what you need for quick acceleration.
There’s a slight improvement in fuel economy, the Toyota Highlander 2.4L gets 11L/100 km, 21 MPG city and 8.4L/100 km, 28 MPG highway. The previous model 11.8L/100 km, 20 MPG and 8.5L/100 km, 27 MPG highway.
A tank of gas will go a little further in the 2023 model, 692 km/430 miles compared to the 2022 Highlander at 663 km/412 miles.
The refreshed Toyota Highlander is very similar to the outgoing model but there are a few updates, Limited and Platinum models now have power folding exterior mirrors, a 12.3” touchscreen and 12.3” digital driver display. Standard features include, a 7” gauge cluster Toyota has eliminated the 4.2” display and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The wireless charger has been moved from the centre console box to the instrument panel shelf for easy access and convenience.
In Canada, the lower trim Toyota Highlander's come with a bench seat, the three top two trims have captain’s chairs. In the US, there is a little more flexibility, the two base trims Toyota Highlander's have the bench seat. The XLE and Limited models are offered with a bench seat and captain’s chairs. The XSE and Platinum models have captain’s chairs.
In Canada, the Toyota Highlander starts at $48,695 CAD, XLE $51,395 CAD, XSE $53,695 CAD, Limited $56,935 CAD, Platinum $58,805 CAD.
In the US, the L Toyota Highlander FWD/AWD starts at $36,620/ $38,220 USD, LE FWD/AWD $39,020/$40,620 USD, XLE FWD/AWD $42,020/$43,620 USD, XSE FWD/AWD $43,615/$45,565 USD, Limited FWD/AWD $46,275/$48,225 USD, Platinum FWD/AWD $49,475/$51,425 USD.
The Toyota Highlander can tow 5,000 pounds.

my wife drives one of these with the 2.4 turbo. In the span of one year we wasted money on a Ford Edge, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee L, both of which had multiple issues, including the batteries going dead overnight. I have never owned a Toyota in my life (and I am old) until this Highlander, and I only bought it because I was so disgusted at the Ford and Jeep. Never even test drove the Highlander until I had signed all the papers and owned it. Turns out we love the Highlander, my wife especially. Can't put my finger on why we like it so much, but we do.

Love that car! Andrea always looks so beautiful. You are a blessed man Zach. Take care of her and love her like crazy. I lost my wife 5 years ago and I'm still grieving. I've been saying this ever since my precious Cindy went to be with JESUS, love that precious woman as hard as you can. One day one of you will wake up and the other one won't be there. Love her so if you are first to go, she will know she was loved fiercely. If she is first to go, love her so you'll have no regrets! Love the channel, by the way! @@lhgross48 Grand Highlander looks nice but regular Highlander fits our needs better. Third row is only used a few times a year and smaller size makes it easier to drive and park in town and fits in the garage. Interesting thoughts on the 4-cyl engine. I have a ‘23 XLE, and I’m not thrilled with the motor… I feel it’s underpowered, especially when accelerating around a turn from a stop… I wonder if there is too much waiting for the turbos to spool up? I think the wireless charger on the shelf may also be a miss. Toyota should have put it on the next level down, beside the auxiliary outlets. My wife’s smaller phone slides around a lot on the charging pad. Overall, appreciate your review!

Motormouth have you noticed if those front doors design on the Highlander goes way under the floor like the new generation Lexus RX does ? Your in Canada and people complaint a lot about this with the new RX. Snow and debris get inside at the bottom of the interior doors. When we open the doors on the RX in winter time it's so ugly and dirty. We have 3 to 4 inches of debris inside the doors sand, snow, ice, calcium etc. My wife and I we hated that on our RX 350 2023.

I think they are making a mistake losing the tried-and-true V6 engines. I have a 2015 V6 Highlander with 180000km and I expect this engine the last me another 20 plus years. Smooth powerful reliable. I don't have to worry about any Turbo breaking or problems with direct injection engines. I know why they are doing it but in real-world situations you probably use more fuel than you are with the V6 always accelerating hard. I can tow 5,000 lbs with the V6. Looks like I may have to keep this Highlander going to rest of my life. Great review as usual.

I just checked the mileage this Highlander compared to my 2015 it's about one mile per gallon better. When I'm cruising 130 km per hour on the highway and the RPMs are barely registering I'll stick with my naturally aspirated V6 thank you. No matter how good the engine is it will never last as long as a 6-cylinder engine and will never be as trouble free. If you're crazy enough to get a new car every 4-5 years you won't care. I try to get at least a half a million kilometres on my vehicles. People are going to beat the hell out of these little four cylinders and they are going to wear out in half the time as a 6-cylinder.

Of course Toyota would continue making the Highlander. They would be foolish to discontinue a huge seller. I would imagine the next generation model to retain 7 passenger seating but it would be more targeted at the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento now that Toyota has the Grand Highlander to compete with the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade etc. With the Lexus TX being barely different from the Grand Highlander, it would be better if the 3.5l PHEV powertrain remains a Lexus exclusive.

I’m curious as to why we’re lumping the standard Highlander in with the Korean twins, Telluride and Palisade. Would the Sorento not be a more accurate comparison vehicle? I know you did mention the Sorento at one point; but, then on the 4 Cars to Consider segment, you used the Telluride.

The diamond shape of the mask in XSE is superb...the one in review here is like having a mustache (toyota logo with the right and left extensions).

Zack, be careful sitting down with your cellphone in your back pocket. You could crack it.

Zack, you should do a review in a Scottish kilt! Of course , it should match the vehicle you’re reviewing 😁!

Any reason the Nissan PathFinder wasn’t among the 4 to consider? I would personally consider it before the Explorer.

If people can't even order this, why does Toyota even launch it? It makes me want to scream!

I like the Mazda CX-90 better. But probably the Toyota is more reliable.

I was told we have to wait over one and half year to get new car in GTA. Hybrid will take more than two and half year.

If you go out with 5-6 ppl most probably one or two of them are kids or have smaller body anyway. So the third row shouldn’t be an issue. Although I personally think that this is 5 ppl vehicle if you consider their personal belongings to fit as well in the car.
