The design of the previous generations of Prius was functional and for a purpose. I honestly don’t see the dislike of it, because what exactly makes a car “ugly”?

Hopefully they did something to prevent catalytic converter theft. No way I'm buying prius, because even shield doesn't helps. But I like this car otherwise.

@@DJTrinivibes4U I was just making the point that (just about) every generation of Prius, up until now, has looked pretty frumpy, dorky, odd, strange, _______ (insert your own), etc. It looked like something NASA would use to navigate the moon's surface IMHO. :^)

Horsepower was over 100 combined before, now it’s 190+. Also don’t knock the driver display being in the middle, it’s no nice to not have to take the eyes off the road.

@@Nathan_Jay - About 600 miles of battery range added per year, max. (Based on one of Kirk Krefeld’s recent videos.) Less than two miles added range per day. If you live in a cloudy climate, or rarely park outside, you won’t get near those numbers. Probably not worth the cost for this option.

Better 6 years late than never. Performance vs a BMW has never been an issue with the Prime, unless you have an M series or 335i. The official numbers are very modest compared to the reality if your battery is even half charged. I have 106K miles on my Prime, and I could tell you many anecdotes about BMWs who thought they were faster than me. A 535i can barely beat my Prime at anything, and it usually takes them from 0 to 80ish to get even 2 or 3 car lengths on me. The only caveat is that for full performance, you want the engine to be done with its warmup cycle, and the battery not empty or near freezing temps. Nothing harmful happens, it just doesn't allow max power with a cold battery or cold engine.

@Toyota USA So make them available in the US at MSRP without the $5000 dealer markup. A dealer called this week with one available for $43k and the Primes are not eligible for federal rebates. Seems strange to pit the Prime against the Tesla Model 3 base offering.

@@imthiazah no. It would under best case operating conditions save you 1 tank of gas a year. The amount of power a panel like that can supply is nothing to the draw of a car. Would be good on something like a jeep where it could power a cooler or camping stuff but does almost nothing for the car. The Sonata just dropped theres it because of that.

From what I understand, the solar roof is used to power accessories, like radio, anti thief, and fans. Basically it charges and maintain the car 12V battery.

@@imthiazah The old one just powered cabin ventilation, which while nice is avoiding a hot car in the summer, did nothing beyond that. This new model will charge the hybrid battery directly and give 2 miles range on a sunny day, which take that as you will.

I'd almost never have to buy gas and I could still drive to Northern California and Washington to see my family without trying to find a stupid charging station. This is what we should be creating. All EV's are not good for those of us who drive a lot or like to take road trips. It's about time someone thought to put solar panels on a car AND make it appealing for long range driving. I wonder how much gas I would really have to buy especially in the summer. I have NEVER bought a brand new car...But this one I want!!!

@@samanthaholden2372 Solar charging is only for in-cabin utilities such as radio and ac.

The voltage is not enough, solar panel is only 12 or 24v, the motor battery is over 200v. They have 2 battery in vehicle, high voltage is for motor, low voltage is for driving computer.

@@黄辰旭 Surely they could convert that somehow, couldn't they? I'm no expert but I know there's cars in development that actually use the solar panels for driving and you can use the power from your rooftop solarpanels to power your car, can't you?

Some of RV have power conventor and solar panel, converting 24v/48v to 220v, it's a huge box under chassis, maybe the size is the biggest problem, for the solar panel and conventor. RV has about 1 or 2 square meters panel and much larger chaasis than compact car.

@@黄辰旭 Hmm, ok, well maybe your right and that's it. Either way, thanks for your perspective. Tbh, I also read in one magazine that the new Prius solar panel does recharge the engine battery but I haven't heard that anywhere else and Toyota also seems to say it's not the case.

As a 2017 Prime owner, I agree. A workaround is to use solar panels to continuously charge a power station capable of charging the car intermittently. The minumum charging power you can configure is 8A at 120V. A related minor beef I have, is that when you plug the car in, it lets the car (and hence AC/heat-pump climate control) run for about a minute, then it shuts the car off. It sure would be nice to be able to run the HVAC system from an outlet or the car charging port. I can see why they don't allow it, because people would live in the car with climate control on 24/7 while not building up any miles to get the car out of warranty. Visiting a friend in an RV park for over 2 weeks in 100F-119F weather, I kept the car running 24/7 instead, which even in a Prius wastes a lot of gas in that kind of heat. Having moved to a non-CARB state now, I'm tempted to add in some chargers (one puts out 0.5A constant current through the whole voltage range I need, for $70ish, so a few of those would be perfect) and voltage-controlled relays to keep from frying the battery. But I'm not sure that the car wouldn''t wonder why the battery voltage is going up while it doesn't think it's charging, and shut down or worse yet, set codes.
