What was the brand of the hitch and sway bar system product you referred to?

I have an Airstream 2016 25 Flying Cloud FB with a 2014 Toyota Tundra SR5 V-8 5.7 Liter. Towing Capacity 10,800. Prodigy braking system, firestone air shocks for lift, Power stop Z36 Braking Kit. Toyota has terrible stock brakes. Everything else is 10/10. A 15-gallon Titan Side kick gas tank = 134 pounds with fuel full/tank total. Truck Weight 5,500 ILBS. GVWR 7,300. Airstream Tongue Weight 875 Pounds. This provides me around 6,509 with GVWR 7,300 pounds. This gives you about 791 pounds to play with. I have zero issues at all with the GVWR being on the higher side when driving or pulling. Airstream Weight 5,600 Dry Pounds. I have been pulling the trailer in the wind, storms, and California roads and it does a perfect job. The Toyota and the Airstream are a perfect match syncing up the hitch, sway bars, and trailer. Aligns really clean horizontally and vertically. The lower center of gravity and the 50% weight on the lower half of the trailer is fantastic. I just ran my numbers going on a 500-mile trip. Nor California to Central Coast 275 Miles and 275 Miles back and I was able to hit 13.3 going south and 12.5 heading back north. About a 1% drop. The Toyota pulls easily, and I seldom use tow haul mode. On climbs or descents, I always put it in tow haul mode but that is for mostly braking on descents and climbing. This 1/2 ton pulls easily at 65 mph at around 2,000-2,200 rpm. All my buds are diesel pushers with big engines, and they all say this Toyota is not even pushing hard on climbs when we are side by side. Gas is the new Diesel with the stringent standards by the EPA it is literally choking the Diesels to death. Diesel is more $$$. I put in the gas and drive. No issues on smog and other challenges. I believe in Diesel for real heavy driving with real weight but a Toyota Tundra SR5 V-8 5.7 is a brilliant engine. I have 50,000 miles and 80% is for towing. You can pull this airstream. The Toyota Tundra SR5 V-8 5.7 liter pulls better than most 3/4. I have done them all. You can go with the Limited, Platinum or TRD and get a few extras.

I have a similar setup. A 2015 1794 Tundra with a 27 foot Airstream (1986 narrow body) and have taken this rig out west over the two high passes in CO with no issues other than the Vale Pass right lane is badly rutted from all the heavy truck traffic over the years and that tended to disrupt tracking of the airstream behind the Tundra. No fault of either truck or trailer, but the road condition.

Nice review ! couple of questions: do you recommend 2H wheel or 4H wheel drive setting while towing this airstream trailer ? How was your experience when toggled between 2H and 4H in terms of payload and mileage ? What’s the size of the hitch ball used ?

Looks like the Tundra TRD Pro is handling the towing pretty good. I'm think of buying the same TRD PRO white but I don't know If I want the red or the other color..

The Toyota Tundra TRD Pro would go well with Airstream Tradewind as it's a off road camping trailer

What is the payload capacity of that Tundra (sticker in door)? And then what is the tongue weight of the Airstream?

I think the tongue weight was 850. Maybe Chad can chime in
@ChadsRVReviews
@ChadsRVReviews Год назад
Yep, the hitch wieght for the International 27FB is 850 ibs.
@pryme2013
@pryme2013 Год назад
And the payload? I’m thinking the same thing Jay is. Overloaded 😂 unless of course you are camping all alone with literally nothing in the trailer or truck/bed lol. My 16 tundra had a payload of 1,430 and that was a double cab. The crew cabs are less and the trd pro is probably less yet. 1200? Maybe? This truck isn’t going to be enough for your avg family of five plus all their gear etc
@ChadsRVReviews
@ChadsRVReviews Год назад
@@pryme2013 I believe Jeff said in the video that the payload for the TRD pro is 1,680. The 850 hitch weight and the two of us are inside the payload capacity for TRD Pro. In the video Jeff talked about a few other Tundra models that he thought would work well with towing Airstreams. Based on Toyota's website the 2023 Tundra can have a max payload of 1,940 ibs, depending on the trim level. This is a little outside my area, but I would say you pick your truck based on your needs. ie. family of four or five is going to look for the higher payload Tundra/truck. But one or two people who have an awesome TRD Pro and an awesome Airstream will be fine. Same goes for the camper if you have a TRD Pro and a family of four or five, look for a smaller Airstream Flying Cloud or Airstream Caravel.

@@ChadsRVReviews My truck is no longer the Tundra. We needed 5th wheel capability. My current truck has 3,520 payload, so any airstream would be no issue, except the price they command. Good quality trailers though

This is wrong information! Yes half ton will pulls flawlessly! But like someone mentionner...from the dealer to your house empty! But NO way this is suitable for an international 27 fb! Front bed 27 are in the range of 1100 on the tongue, the your TRD max payload is within 1400 lbs max (its a TRD PRO with all Bell and whistle) the trailer hooked you have 300 left in the cab/bed for cargo and passengers! 23 ft Airstream and under yes half ton truck works, 25 ft over require 3/4 ton trucks! If you are over your payload or GCWR then you are playing with fire! Here in this vidéo this is what you promote! NO à Tundra is not suitable for a 27!

let's see.... TRD Pro payload of 1600lbs - tongue weight 850 = 750. Weight of 2 average size adults (300) 750 - 300 = 450 You now have 450 pounds of payload left. Once you outfit your travel trailer + add supplies in the back of the truck YOU WILL BE WELL OVER the payload capacity of the TRD PRO. I mean its do-able only if you are picking up the Airstream from the dealer lot and tugging in home. Clearly a the job fro a 3/4 ton truck. BE SAFE !!
@mikeeeeee555
@mikeeeeee555 Год назад
You would also spread some of that 450 balance in the airstream itself since the tundra has a GCWR of 17250lb and a a CWR of 11110lb you’ll be fine.
@justinmorgan7851
@justinmorgan7851 11 месяцев назад
This is good advice, although that Blue Ox weight distribution hitch will help allocate the weight a bit more evenly, all the way from the front tow vehicle axles back to the Airstream's axles. And with the huge rear hatch on that particular Airstream you could load up the rear half of the RV, instead of (over?)loading the back of the truck (which would counterbalance the forward weight of the RV, although you still need to maintain at least 10%+ tongue weight). The only way to know for sure you're safe is to actually weigh the combo. I really wish they had taken it to a CAT scale and done a couple of weighs with and without the trailer.
