Amazing kit and decals. It was an amazing day at the RNLI factory on the AirFix press day 19th June 2024 seeing the real thing being made.

I haven't built a ship kit in decades, but as there's one of these boats about a mile from my house I'm very tempted! Research will never be easier 🙂 Airfix have really upped their game recently.

I will try to pick one up, if any local shops here in the Toronto area stock them. It would be nice to see Airfix upscale this to 1/24th and have a motor option.

Gary, I just received a package which upon opening appeared to be a surgical instrument, it turns out to be a spectacular looking airbrush from Gaahleri. There was no freight charges in the colonies. Thanks for letting us know, a recommendation for your viewers who haven't taken advantage of this opportunity - order the 3 packages of the connector plus hose. I caught the connections after getting the airbrush 0.3, and decided to go back and get the proper "new" connections and hose. Not sure when the sale ends but you just can't buy quality like this at the discounts they are offering. Thanks again, Cheers Bob

That is a lovely little kit. I am getting into miniature radio control models and I think this is a good candidate. The jet propulsion system is probably not possible but a prop and rudder will work. The only thing is the well over scale railings, so I would make them out of wire. I think the ones in the kit will probably scale out to about 150mm in diameter.

Another great video Gary. I've ordered two from our local RNLI shop and I've ordered the decal sheet from Airfix. I know a crew member here in bangalore so hopefully get some pictures some time. I'm looking forward to watching the build video 😊 👍 I'm going to build both and donate one to the lifeboat station.

Nice video I have been waiting to see if anyone would create this model so bonus it’s Airfix and thank you for including the additional decal sheet available. I wanted to build this as with many others my late father’s name is on one so to create the same model is great . Could I ask is the paint substantially enough to complete the model

Hey Gary. Great review of a much anticipated kit! Looks really lovely while sticking to the starter set ethos. I've not really been too interested in the starter sets to be honest, however, in the last year I've probably bought about 10! They're so well designed and yet when finished you wouldn't know they were any different from a normal set. And with this set being for such a fantastic charity/organisation (ie, money donated) it would be kinda silly not to get one! Thanks for a great review Gary and definitely looking forward to your build video! Bobby

Well done indeed. Try to paint seals on the cabing nad then press 'glass; into place. Another issues is material shrinkage which causes gap between last window and the body. Looks like Airfix still has to learn a lot about model design, 3D model is not the universal solution.

I do like the look of the kit and I do have one on pre order and this is where I will have a grumble. I believe when it was released in January Airfix had a lot of preorder interest but there are seldom updates on when it’s due. Mine has been pending for over a month. I suspect the answer if Airfix here ask would be it’s global shipping delays. It’s an RNLI lifeboat so the bulk of interest will be in the UK. By now there have been dozens of lifeboat open days where the kit hasn’t been available for sale which is a shame for Airfix and the RNLI. So with the UK sales and Interest due to the subject why on earth didn’t they get the guys in Newhaven who did the Spitfire to Mould it. It would have been out by Easter. It may be a couple of pounds dearer getting it moulded in the UK but would you rather spend £20 and not have the kit in nearly 7 months with pre orders being cancelled as people loose interest or pay £22 and have the thing in a timely fashion . Rant over sorry
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Месяц назад
This is something that plagues many manufacturers - announcing a kit at the start of the year then not knowing when they will actually get it. Yes, it is a function of having the production in India, the shipping between there and here is unpredictable even without Houthi attacks essentially closing the Red Sea route - when I asked when this was due it was almost a case of "depends if the container ship turns left into Harwich or right into Rotterdam first"... As for the extra cost, there is certainly that but I really don't know the kind of value that would be. To me it's always a pity they are not moulded here!

This is the only kit my wife actually wants me to get! 😂 I'm in Redcar so our nearest Shannon is whitby, which is what I want to do it as. Do you know when the RNLI shops will get these in stock? We will be going next week & would rather get it from them. Now if airfix could do a kit of my local lifeboat I'd be very happy! It's the Zetland at Redcar & it's the world's oldest surviving lifeboat!
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Месяц назад
I don't know when they'll have stock sadly - I don't know if RNLI have put in a bulk order that maybe gets sent to their own distribution system or if they go direct to stations. But the release is next week so they might have pre-shipped to distributors already.

@garys_stuff indeed they do Gary...there is a R N.L.I Lifeboat station in Howth which is about 20 minutes away from me on a bike....and so its not a coincidence after all they chose the "Shannon" name?

Fantastic little product. Even more wonderful to know that a portion of purchase costs go to the RNLI. These guys and gals truly are heroes. End of. Just wondering, however, about those modellers who'd like to acquire this kit but think the RNLI are traitorous for picking up foreigners in rubber dinghies and additionally knowing some of their cash is going to support this amazingly wonderful institution. Yep, you know who you are. Ooops! 😂
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Месяц назад
Interestingly, the RNLI chap addressed this issue - first, their ethos is that they will save everyone without question, secondly that migrant boats in the English Channel accounted for about 2% of their rescues last year. The majority, it seems prevalent in summer of course, are town and city dwellers who live away from the sea, have no understanding of tides and currents, go down to the coast with their cheapo paddle board or inflatable dinghy and get into difficulties first time on the water. One wonders, with tongue slightly in cheek, if there is any correlation between the people who express that opinion about 'foreigners' and the people who form the bulk of the shouts that the RNLI answer...
@markfranks1329
@markfranks1329 Месяц назад
@garys_stuff Exactly, Gary! However, I don't think these types have the ability to think that way,......simply because it's outside the box.🙄
@jeffholt9437
@jeffholt9437 Месяц назад
I am one of "those" people Mark and have no problem admitting it. Interesting that, whilst the RNLI's own website states that 2022 launches covering these "channel crossings" amounted to only 3% of the total number of launches for the same year, it was still 290 launches with the total number of 108 lives saved out of 269 sea bourne individuals rescued. Given that the number of crossings has been growing almost exponentially year on year (85 were rescued in a joint RNLI / Border Force operation on Tuesday), I suspect the numbers for 23 and 24 will be much higher. I would also suggest that none of these figures cover the actual number of migrant individuals transported to the UK in RNLI vessels. What was also interesting from their website is that the RLNI operate under international maritime law which allows them to enter and operate in French waters which begs the question why these individuals are not being returned to France from where they came from (I cannot believe that a previous precedent of returning French nationals directly to France does not exist). Regards.

@@garys_stuffI'm sure your new contacts could provide a comprehensive breakdown of last year's launches Gary and then we can see if there is indeed a correlation. Please feel free to update this comments thread?
@markfranks1329
@markfranks1329 Месяц назад
@jeffholt9437 Thank you for your polite response, Jeff. With the statistics you have offered, it does indeed show that this issue has a much greater complexity than most folk realise, myself included. Your points are certainly valid, and no doubt have a certain foundation. However, my statement was, as I'm sure you will have inferred, aimed solely at those who simply react with a basal instinct. As Gary indirectly implied in the last part of his response of how the irony is lost on these types. I reiterate again that the RNLI is a wonderful institution, and ALL souls whilst at sea are deserving of preservation. Where they alight, however, is another issue. Regards to you too.

The crown is for Her Majesty. IIRC if it dips in the middle the sovereign is female, domed in the middle is for a male sovereign.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Месяц назад
It's the Tudor crown now, I'm told.... more "pointy"???
@julianmhall
@julianmhall Месяц назад
@@garys_stuff That's what I mean Gary.. the RNLI symbol has the crown that dips in the centre. It changed to that when George VI (male) died and his daughter (Elizabeth II) became sovereign. I'll have to check what crowns Victoria and Elizabeth I had. If the female thing is right both should dip in the middle. Elizabeth I was Tudor though.
@julianmhall
@julianmhall Месяц назад
I've looked it up now, and I'm still non the wiser. Victoria's 'mini crown' is domed but her full size crown is dipped. Victorian postboxes have crowns with dips too. Maybe the 'mini crown' was for general use and the domed one for State occasions. Queen Elizabeth I who /was/ Tudor has the dipped crown /not/ the Tudor one - albeit obviously in her case the only images are paintings.
