Hey everyone! Finally, at long last...the amphibian migration is underway! Of course, I was busy looking for salamanders during the march of the salamanders! This time around I made it a point to put myself out there and really get involved in meaningful conservation work. I was able to participate in data collecting and rescue nights for the animals that I love! In doing so, I was even able to encounter a species that I have never seen in person before - the Jefferson salamander!

Another wonderful video. Love the effort here. salamanders are so cool. My father managed a county club in Wisconsin and would bring me some in old paint buckets as a kid. Walkways wanted me to admire them for a few days and let them go. The Jeffersons are really cool. I Don’t think I’ve ever seen one until this video. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I saw a frog hopping around the other night while driving home from work. I’m guessing it was a pickerel frog since I was out by corn fields with no ponds near by. Could have been a wood frog maybe. There are vernal pools near me I should check them out tomorrow.

Looks like that selfie stick is carbon fiber as well. Nice.

I had heard of some areas constructing tunnels under roads to aid in salamander migration. Do you have any of that in your area? Do you know if that makes a difference?

The data collection in my area is working toward that solution, but don't know when it will be implemented. It has been documented as a success in areas that the tunnels have been created, though.

I found a yellow spotted one at work and kept him. I got him set up ina 10gal with a pool to swim in which he does. But he won't eat its only day 3 but he still rejects even live worms...any recommendations?

Yeah. Put it back where you found it

I would also recommend returning it where you found it. However, I also would like to address the setup. Sounds like you found a spotted salamander. The water should be taken out and it should be a terrestrial setup, with a shallow water dish. Spotted salamanders are mole salamanders and live in burrows. They only enter the water to breed and stay on land outside of that. As far as feeding -- the salamander is most like stressed and won't eat for a while. It needs to adjust to a new environment, but that new environment needs to be setup correctly to ensure it can settle in properly. I'm saying all of this because I can't force you to release it and would hope you at least have the right info, but I do agree that it should be taken back to where you found it.

@@TheSalamanderWilds look buddy my setup is correct and exactly like you say it should be. It's a shallow pool with a burrow underneath. I'm keeping it lol hell settle in and start eating soon enough. I'm gona set mine up like yours with a pond on one side eventually

@micc4044 You asked for recommendations and they were given to you. Your setup doesn't sound correct, spotted salamanders factually are not semi aquatic animals. There is no need for a "pond". You will risk it drowning. But that is the reason why it won't eat. As I stated, I can't force you to release it, but I can't and won't advocate for taking animals from the wild, especially during their breeding season. If you've checked the rest of my channel, I have always advocated for captive breeding.
