I get questions on a daily basis that indicate that the average consumer does not know these basics about solar panels. While there is a lot more to know than just the specs of a solar panel's performance, it is important to understand these for yourself.
I really hope you find this video helpful. Please don't hesitate to reach out. I service the majority of the United States and have a whole team of local consultants and contractors. Looking forward to speaking with you soon!
Would you like to get started with a consultation? If so, then please fill out the form in the link below. Once received, my assistant Cody will call you back afterwards to explain next steps in receiving a thorough consultation and quote from us. Thank you for watching the channel.

Value usually doesn't mean great margins for the sellers so they don't want to give you best bang for buck info. They want to push you to best specs which usually means premium price which usually means greater margins.

With the addition of batteries, the easy PPW calculation kind of became less relevant because you can easily have a project where the batteries are costing more than the solar and technically the battery's kW or kWh ratings are not included the the normal system size's kW figure we always calculated the PPW from. There is oftentimes more electrical work prepping jobs for batteries vs just solar and so that's also a cost we don't often talk about. (thank god for the meter collar in certain utilities)

LG panels are not on the list, probably because LG discontinued making panels, but I got some ("440 W," nominal, 84" by 41") installed on my roof last year nevertheless (combined with Enphase IQ8 microinverters). The panels seem to be of good quality, but I wonder if I can mix-and-match and plug-and-play with some other brands should the need arise, i.e. could other brands be used as replacement of individual panels and be compatible with the rest of the array?
@vinnie97

Of course, as long as they meet the voltage threshold requirements of the inverter.
@DaveBoxBG
@DaveBoxBG 3 месяца назад
What about Canadian solar HiKu7 panels? I am thinking about them because they provide huge power for less panels. I made a calculation and for the same space filling it with Canadian Solar even though they are larger provides more wattage for less price since I need less panels. Also for the inverter it is better to have fewer panels to not exceed the voltage rating.
@Superiorsolarconsulting
@Superiorsolarconsulting 3 месяца назад
They’re just larger. More surface area. The higher wattage panels are oftentimes a bit lower quality so it would take more space to actually create the same power even though there would be less panels

In my part of the world most cost effective options are 144 (half) cell panels with peak STC power of 550-600W. I wonder why you don’t have options like that. Could it be because of the lobbying of micro inverter manufacturers? As most home systems here are 24kWp with a single string grid inverter.

You have great videos and fantastic knowledge 👍 you have definitely been drinking that REC koolaid though. I have proof on multiple Sunpower systems I sold 10 years ago here in the Coachella Valley (extremely hot climate in so cal) that has energy production so consistent that you could argue their panel degradation is completely weather related. Their manufacturing… solid copper foundation/backside contact w/triple redundant connections for expansion and contraction is by far the best for long term durability and reliability. Rec doesn’t have the same proof. Unfortunately, Sunpower is now not what it used to be… sad. Therefore, Maxeon is still the best by far.

Micro inverters fill a niche in 3 areas ... selling back to the grid, batteries on the ac side of the equation, and warranty a house inverter 1 (one) huge whole house inverter that goes out at say 12 years old is a Basengi of a different species to replace where the warranty is longer on micro inverters and costs less.
@KristenSipe
@KristenSipe 5 месяцев назад
@@user-mb5mk8ib1n couldn't agree more. Unless you are in a forest, or really care about per panel monitoring, string inverters are always more value driven. However, in the US, you must have rapid shut down, so if you use a string inverter, you have to have a Tigo on the panel to meet code. In most other countries, you can throw a string inverter on. In Australia, it costs 1/3 of what it costs in the US, because of code, tariffs, and the ability to use string inverters without rapid shut down.
@Superiorsolarconsulting

I prefer AC coupling even though it’s a bit trickier.
@pngarcia1563
@pngarcia1563 4 месяца назад
Ultimately, inverter determines what AC you will be getting, not the module..also, are you purchasing system with cash or lease?..if it's a lease, you don't need to worry about any of this..the financing company is responsible if equipment fails to perform. The system monitoring app will tell you what if something is having issues. At the end of the day, you signed a contract lease that guarantees the annual production. So most put the money into the inverter, not the module.

If you're getting a battery system it's best to get a hybrid string inverter as that will take DC straight from the panels. You recommend only micro inverters that convert DC to AC on the roof. Then convert aac to DC to store in a battery. Crazy!. And you are limiting your sheet to panels that are only compatible with a brand of micro inverter!? This list is therefore ridiculous. The real world difference is only a couple percent considering only half the power goes through the 3 times round trip. How come no dollars/watt? The most important factor is value. Ya, there are panels that are better than others - they also cost a lot more....

@shubinternet
@shubinternet 6 месяцев назад
True enough. However, you could talk to us about the prices you could pay for them in your area, to at least give a ballpark estimate of what people could see, and then they would have to do their own calculations for watts per dollar in their area for what they can get. And your partners that you work with in other areas could chime in with their versions of the same numbers.
@Superiorsolarconsulting

I mentioned approximate price differences being a couple grand on an average project when comparing one of the top end panels on the board vs more budget option. Literally each supplier has different prices and beyond that, each contractor has different pricing too. Sometimes companies get loyalty discounts to sell a certain volume or not offer other brands when selling. There’s multiple layers that can affect price. Then on top of that more contractors are going to mark it up a bit and so that will affect the end price to the consumer.

You missed 1 or 2 points. You did not mention who the world biggest solar panel manufacturer is. That must be one of the most convincing arguments that a company which is over 20 years old is one of the best cause why should they survive if they are not providing good products in such a market where words of mouth is the big selling point ? You would read it around the globe if the build not top panels, I mean reliable cause in this market not every company survived and some of the panel manufacturers are even younger. I did check price, availability and searched the world for issues or dramas with panels to avoid issues. The less I have to pay the less I do have to care about how long they will last cause here the output in kWp / m² is a king which means that many , who bought cheap plan and do a repowering after 8 to 16 years based on the innovation leaps that are coming. And we all should know about the upcoming impact of perowskite crystal which is the stuff of the best performing panels in the world around 28% and above , cause the competition between the scientists / universities is stiff and the lead changing between british and german labs. But everyone can get a glimpse a lot easier with the euqation of 28% / 21% = what ? Yes, that technology is about 1/3 better than all the rest of the current available models which means you can count the days tilll this will be available in the mass market as the new status quo and therefore good prices, not the early bird level. Buy cheap and never forget to let these panels let them pay of soon to be able for a repowering cause if you are smart you can sell these while on your roof to a buyer who is happy to get a panel for maybe half price or just a third to begin hin career. He we even tend to let the buyers take them from the roof cause they could not harm much which means they simply unscrew the fixes and open the mc4 connections and carry them from the roof. Half of the work for a repowering is done. And this is the most important advice cause you can sell them quite young and relatively good looking with a long manufacturer waranty cause if you have saved the spec sheet pdf quite well and the bill too then the arguments are on yyour side if the price level is apropriate cause the used panel market is tight and small for young used panels, while that is big for old ones like 18 to 30 years old. If I had made my profits and the panels will have paid back time to take advantage from higher Wp / m² results and to earn more solar generated power. The grid needs more and most likely you too cause the biggest energy consumption reduction tech have already been invented and mass adopted like the LED ligthning revolution and high efficient brushless dc motors for example those pumps in your heating systems which pump the warm water to your radiators cause those run usually quite a long time and therefore can save a lot if you replace a 80 or 100 W pumpt with a new one that runs on variable speed from 3 to 12 Watts. I have bought longi and risen panels after I had trouble with trina panels from 2014 that suffered from oxidation on the backside due to the thin white foil which had lost its protection in a big agri solar power farm. Just 7 or 8 year old you can see with you eyes the effect of oxidation which means they perform at about 73% or 180 W now compared to 245 W back then. Therefore the second point worth to mention: DO NO LONGER BUY single glas panels with a foil on the back. Far more reliable and also better for the residiual value are glass glass panels where you will not face such cases of oxidation as reason number 1 for degradation. Glass glass is much much stiffer and better to handle cause in case you scratch the back plastic on the back during mounting you need to seal that with tape right now. Will not happen with glass glass. You will not pay much more for glass glass nowadays cause it is at the edge to become state of the art. Especially if repowering is an option for you then go for glass glass cause in 8 or 12 years the usual then still young used panel will be glass plastic and your glass glass will stand out big times and make it easier to sell them. At least my experience that 8 or 12 year old panel sell much much easier than the really old ones with 20 plus years - at least if you have the spec sheet then.

@user-rq9qg4gs1v
@user-rq9qg4gs1v 6 месяцев назад
@garyhiland6013 it is ok if someone looks for something cheap. However, the real question is what module you really need. And that is depending on the individual location's latitude. Example: if your location is south of Rome ... in the USA south of New York... then a one layer cell like topcon is ok. If however your location has a latitude like Paris or further to the North then you need a cell with at least 2 layers like you have in HJT, and the efficiency should be above 28%. The reason behind is the different illumination. Topcon stops producing sufficient electricity latest at 150W per square meter, while HJT with 28% efficiency should provide electricity even at 30W per square meter. On cloudy days across November through January you have here an illumination of just 30W to 50W per square meter. In Rome or to the south that should not fall far beyond 200W per square meter.

What! At 8m30s you actually say you are ignoring the most powerful panels because not compatible with a brand of micro inverters!? When most of the world use string inverters. Nphase too slow to keep up with the best panels and you exclude them from a "best solar panels list"!! Seems you're producing a fake list then!

There will be a new updated video soon. The compatibility issue IS a big deal. The larger REC alpha series panels aren't really any better than the 400-430w models, just a larger surface area. Would somebody who's not trying to be transparent even mention it in the first place?
