The heavy-duty pickup truck wars are in their heyday. It is like the modern interpretation of the muscle car wars of the 1960s, manufacturers are constantly one-upping their competition (and themselves) in insane torque numbers and towing figures. The spec sheets on some of these rigs are getting insane. Never in my youth did I imagine that my grown-up years would feature vehicles pushing over 1,000 lb-ft of torque, but here we are. Chevrolet has taken a more “conservative” approach than their competition from Ram and Ford, opting for a sub-1,000 lb-ft of torque number in favor of ensuring the total package is suitable for the towing public. Investing in a partnership with Allison for a 10-speed transmission and technology both in the vehicle and on phone companion apps, GM & Chevrolet are opening the world of heavy towing to more customers.
Crazy torque and towing numbers aside, the war runs deeper than just having the most torque and highest towing and payload. Manufacturers are taking into consideration the whole towing experience from the technology loaded into the vehicle and what is available on your phone as a companion app. These apps take into consideration owners towing multiple different trailers with the same tow vehicle, the hookup process, and the navigation down highways when hooked up. This really is next-level innovation.
Chevrolet has introduced a transparent trailer camera mode that allows you to utilize a camera mounted on the back of the trailer to give a view on the 13.4” infotainment screen as if there were no trailer behind your truck at all. Adaptive cruise control takes into consideration the added weight and length of the trailer behind your vehicle, as does the blind zone alert system. The pickup will even alert you if the combined weight rating of the truck and trailer exceeds what the vehicle is rated for.
The new 6.6L Duramax V8 diesel with its iron block is good for 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. Helping translate that power to the road is an Allison-branded 10L1000 10-speed automatic transmission.
The interior of this 2024 HD borrows from the updated light-duty models. The digital gauge cluster is paired with a 13.4" horizontally mounted touchscreen infotainment powered by Google. We have tested this system in the 1500 ZR2 we had while in LA for the LA Auto Show and found it quick, responsive, and easy to use.
Chevy has committed to horizontal screens to emphasize the width of their pickups and this 3500 is definitely wide enough for 3 across in the upgraded rear seat. With a fold-down center armrest and hidden storage behind both outboard seat backs, the rear seat has options for storing and hiding more gear; not to mention the easy-to-flip-up seat bottom with under-seat storage.
This 2024 Chevrolet 3500 HD commands a presence both here on the show floor of the 2023 North Texas Auto Show, but also on the road and at the worksite. It borrows everything we liked about the 1500 models, but adds that massively powerful Duramax under the hood.
