This 2024 Chevrolet Silverado W/T is the cheapest new truck you can buy today (if you imagine it doesn't have a back seat). It's selling for $39,985 and the two door version comes in closer to $36k with current rebates. Today we're going to check out this 2024 work truck and compare it to my 2006 GMC Sierra work truck I just bought.

A $40K truck worth every bit of $24K!

Not even... I hate how everything nowadays has junk unreliable crap 4cl turbos that last about 50k miles before needing repair. Just like the Big Auto Makers like it needs repair and 80% of revenue on cars/ trucks is repairs... Everything is engineered to break more and self repairs are harder and harder to do since everything is over-engineered proprietary crap! Still running My 1997 Ford F-250 with 170k miles on it bought it when gas prices were crazy Back in 2008 Paid $1,000 for it... just looking cuz its old and prices today are INSANE!!!! Taking care of My oldie changing the fluids and whatnot... But I remember looking at Chevy Colorados in 2017 and thinking $20k for a smaller truck was about the only thing I could afford... and I almost pulled the trigger... Glad I didn't but Geez Mavericks going for almost $40k there is no "affordable truck" or a "cheap truck" today. Ill happily Guzzle Gas at 9miles per gallon to avoid the High cost of a new Truck and drive my F-250 8cl Gas Guzzler to the ground!

If it’s got cruise, a/c and electric windows it’ll be fine by me. Not to mention I think cloth seats are more comfortable. How often do you adjust your mirrors or seating position unless it’s a company car used by multiple people. Imagine how many years of trouble free driving someone going to have in that truck while all those high end models are parked up because all there overly complicated options have broken. Cheers Pat🇦🇺

this is a crew cab truck, I wouldnt want to unlock and lock both back doors manually each time i forgot a tool. I wish truck engines didn't have VVT or cylinder deactivation, but those days have passed. Now if a manual windows stripper trim was available for $25k in 2wd that would change the equation, but basic power options don't really add much to the price.

@@gregorylyon1004Over the years I had owned a 1992 GMC, 2001 Ford, & a 2006 Ram 1/2 ton pickups. All had V6 engines, manual transmissions, and crank windows. They all sold quickly & for good money, especially for the Ram I let go in 2021. I would argue there is definitely a market for stripper manual trucks. The manufacturers though simplify production and make much more profits by making former options now standard equipment so all buyers are hit with a heftier MSRP.

That is clearly wrong. For example, useful features (instead of the silly things like tailgate fluff) like auto dimming mirrors, are pretty much essential today due to all the arsehats on the road with ridiculously blinding headlights. 20 years ago, any mid-level trim truck or SUV had them.

I love how we actually stepped BACKWARD in headlight technology from the weird “bean counters were asleep” generation of GM full size trucks that *ALL* had factory standard xenon headlamps from 2016-2018, yes even the W/Ts (though in the HDs strangely none of the 2500 Chevys got them regardless of trim while all the 2500 GMCs did).

I agree. No LEDs is a selling point as they are too bright. I went past a car wreck the other day and all the police cars were throwing up a light show that was absolutely blinding.@@Dave-in-MD
@IN-rf1pv
@IN-rf1pv 4 месяца назад
@@marknelson8724 This is a myth and dangerously and almost ignorantly wrong for several reasons… First of all, high intensity lighting be it Xenon or LED when installed PROPERLY in a factory system throws off light that is more natural and closer in hue to natural daylight. Assuming you aren’t talking about a lifted to the sky pickup truck or an aftermarket retrofit rammed inside a halogen housing, the oncoming light from a so equipped vehicle should actually be *less* dazzling than a halogen car throwing its widely scattered light all over the place. And I’ve been damn near blinded by misadjusted halogens or halogens on lifted trucks every bit the same or worse than I have on LED or xenon equipped vehicles. Second, everyone having access to advanced lighting makes the road as a whole safer for all of us because you know, being able to see 5 feet in front of you is kind of important especially at night. Advanced lighting systems deposit a more focused and narrowly directed beam of light out ahead of the driver in such a fashion that you can not easily “out drive” the lights as is the case in many terrible halogen systems. When it’s working properly, you get a nice flat and even pool of light out ahead of you without the hotspots associated with halogen. This is such an important factor that beginning in 2021 NHTSA began docking safety points to vehicles that still insisted on using halogen lights when in reality LEDs are probably cheaper to implement by now anyway and most manufacturers who offer both types in one model are really just adding to their assembly line costs strictly to “shame” the buyers of the lower tech solution into upgrading to costlier packages, options or entire models. And lastly, because halogens are typically so horribly implemented (sure you don’t get blinded by many of them… why? Because the person driving can’t see sh*t either!), I see SO many halogen equipped car drivers on dark roads using their high beams which is not an appropriate solution as it’s worse than anything discussed here. But sure, let’s continue with the “get off my lawn” boomer approach because “oLd sTuFf is gOODeR”. Bottom line , other than less maintainability in the field and higher replacement costs which are offset mostly by the fact that these lighting systems fail at a fraction of the rate of typical incandescent and halogen versions, advanced lighting is good for ALL of the driving public.

@bikeman1x11 Funny story. The 2.7T is the ONLY GM gas Full-size truck engine to survive the GM constant run / load testing, without catastrophic failure. Aside from the 8100 Vortec. The 2.7T makes the same model 5.3 truck seem whimpy. With almost 50lb ft more of torque.

FYI I drive a 2020 1 wheel drive Silverado 2.7L 4 cylinder turbo daily as a company provided vehicle. It replaced a GMC 1 wheel drive 4.3L NA 6 cylinder. The 4 turbo gets identical mpg as the 6 but feels like a V-8. So far I am impressed but it only has around 45,000 miles on it. Let's see how it does with 125,000 miles? PS It has a check engine light on, already. Something to do with a gas evap fan for emissions. Just typical GM quality. My personal vehicle is a 2018 Toyota Tundra SR5 4x4. Of course it has never had a single issue or engine light come on.

Truck seems nice!! All War Department has is old '15 Ram Quad Cab bought her for $23,000 in '15 from Enterprise w/11, 000 miles on it. Just 3.6L V-6 & 8 spd, but still goes like rapid ape! I splurged for BFG real aggressive tires, so she gets great traction & mileage, & w/51,000 mi on 'em still mint! When got truck, put window visors, runnin' boards, tall bug shield, & trailer wiring on it so she moved household from Mich to FLA. Unloaded haulin' trailer, she averaged about 34 MPG, but fully overloaded she only got 24 MPG so told me I'd effed up, as it cost money for her to move!! (Ya think). She was right ya know, as hadn't put her old red container STP Oil Treatment in as didn't have many left. Gave in, & she got 36 & 27 respectively, so we was good. I guess she's been usin' it some as rig has 62 ,000 miles on it now. No bangs, dents, scrapes or other BS on it. She's still using new set of tires I got her in '15, and same brakes, shocks, plugs, wires, motor, drivetrain, but the good people at The Ram Dealer sent her notice her truck gettin' old, & not had repairs it obvious needs by now, so will give her a break & allow her $10, 000 for her piece of junk against a new Ram Quad Cab for $52.000, so she suggested I should go out & get a job again, so she can do exactly that! I had to think fast if possible, so promised to detail her piece of junk out, shine 'em back up to New+, and take her & her piece of junk to Dealership. They weren't too pretty interested in having to deal with a woman, a thought I'd also had a few times lately, but basically told us to look at all four rows of brand new Rams, come back and tell what she thought of 'em. Well, being frickin' broke, I tried that ole cycle-loadgy deal on her, & suggested we make a list of purdiest trucks, so spent couple hours lookin', came back with list, but there was crowd around her truck, with 4 Salesmen just high-steppin' out to us. I started ole Bo (you know: RAM-BO) for get-a-way, Mgr grabbed Bo's windowsill, glanced over sayin', "Are we runnin"? We was thinkin' of runnin', but he was surprised couldn't hear motor, nor feel it runnin' either. I had to splain parallelism to 'em with growing Gallery, so said, "High voltage wires runnin' along each other can fire both cylinders, thus she runs rough., but Bo is a guy & he don't run rough!! Everyone there except Mgr realized I'd poked 'em, so had to lift hood, & there set Bo's motor just a purrin', so I told crowd, "These Rams nowadays manufactured so perfect, if ya buy the right oil treatment, don't pound the truck, & become right footed driver timing the lights, etc, you'll get a lot of years, & a lot of miles out of these babies!! With Mgr's Salesmen now doing their thing, I backed out, but Mgr back, shoved something in Wife's hand, then asked how I knew bout autos, so told him, "Family Tradition, Gramps of same name, Henry Ford's 1st Apprentice in '01". He did a little calculatin', and said, "That would mean Gramps worked for them in 2001?" I responded, "No Sir, Gramps worked for Henry in 1901 when it was just the two of them!". That blew the ole Boy's mind, so slowly made our escape & asked Wife which Ram she had found most beautiful? She answered, "Why Bo of course, if decided to go back to work at 82, it most likely would kill ya, & I'd miss you, although don't know why!! I asked Little Miss Perfect what was her wish for lunch, and she said didn't know, but as Mrg had slipped $500 in her hand, "How's about The Golden Corral"? Done & Done!!

Just bought a 2024 Silverado 1500 W/T with a regular cab particularly to drag a 5000 lb travel trailer around. The 2.7 liter Turbomax 4 cyl engine is rated 310 bhp and 430 ft-pounds which is impressive. This truck is taking over the trailering from a BMW SUV diesel, 3.0 liter 6 rated 265 bhp and 425 ft-pounds. The Chevy engineers managed to make the Turbomax have a very diesel-like torque curve by making that turbocharger really work hard at low rpm, no doubt why you hear the turbo so much. I would have liked to get the Duramax 3 liter 6 engine but those are very hard to find and impossible under 60 grand. This Turbomax was my second choice, but very capable.

Just looked at sticker of my 2016 (so, 8 yrs ago), Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT double cab Z71 5.3 was $44,685. (Paid $30,000, 7 yrs later received $25,000 trade in). My new 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom crew cab 4x4 was $50,565. (Paid $36,800). Both trucks are equipped w/ very similar options: power windows, locks, mirrors, rear window defrost, posi, 3.42 gear, trailering pkg, remote start, power seat. Pro - torque increased from 383 to 430 ft pounds. Con - horsepower decreased from 355 to 310. Went from 6 speed to 8 speed trans. Went from 2 speed transfer case to single speed (rarely used low lock anyways). Went from double cab to crew cab. More safety stuff, similar payload & towing, better mpg, 18" to 20" wheels.

Trucks are ridiculously overpriced now. 5 years ago, you could buy a brand new Colorado for like $20k.

This is a brand new full size truck, if you calculate inflation over the past 5 years 35k isnt bad compared to 20k for a mid size truck

Yup, here in NY, 5 years ago, you could get a Colorado 2wd, no back seat, and a manual transmission for roughly 20k.

Actually the build cost between a midsize and a full sized truck is not very much.

All these trucks should start at $23,000-$25,000. At $35,000. it's ridiculous.

I would still opt for the 5.3 in this truck, only for a sound preference. That turbo whistle would get annoying on my 7 hour drives from south to west Texas.

Right up to the point he intemroduced the Turbo 4 cylinder I was giving it a chance. 4 cylinders don't belong in a full size truck. I'll stic with my 5.3 V-8.

The 4 cylinder has more torque than your engine 😂
@kevinokeefe8576
@kevinokeefe8576 4 месяца назад
@firstlast--- that may be so, but my engine is naturally aspirated and doesn't have to run in boost constantly to make the same power. I see that turbo 4 cylinder burning out way before my 5.3 litre ever slows down.

Had two 5.3s and in my lifetime, it was the best most reliable engine I ever owned in a truck. Easy ti work on and in stock form it was powerful enough with "decent" fuel economy. We still talking econo trucks right? Maybe a 4.8 v8? A pickup is synonimous with V8 in my view. @@045spdgt

Getting new vehicles stripped-down with no power options is more than a bargain. How many repair videos does JR have showing him fixing broken power windows as opposed to manual crank windows? Those power options break way more often. And how many cars have reliable bulletproof manual transmissions where their automatic transmissions are problematic disasters?

Yeah,@@duncanarends604, I bought a new 1999 Saturn SL1 in the most base model; no A/C, manual transmission, and manual doors, windows & mirrors. Had that basic commuter car for 17 years and traded it in before it reached 200,000 miles with no problems (just regular oil changes and standard maintenance). Best reliable car I ever had. Found out that those Saturns had problems with the automatic transmissions, but my manual transmission was very reliable.

They are hard to find on a dealers lot, but you can still get regular cab trucks (short and long bed) - they are popping up like mad all over the place here (the vast majority being F150's, and while these are work trucks, they aren't being used by businesses exclusively for work). You may not believe there isn't a market for them - but they are selling like hot cakes here.

Okay, the push button parking/emergancy brake bothers me. It's fine for a new vehicle, but ever had a flex hose or master cylinder go bad... Now use that brake to bring the vehicle to a controlled safe stop...
@FastSS02

@@nukedathlonman why does it bother you? It's an electric motor on each rear wheel that pushes the brake pads in.

There are no half ton reg cab wt available in the US w a v8. They’re all turbo 2.7L. There is a 3500 Silverado wt reg cab 6.6L though. 12mpg. Great truck and no AFM ! , a traditional no BS motor

Back when I was a teenager in the 80s this work truck would have been more like a midgrade optioned truck. They sold trucks then with no radios even, in addition to no power windows, no power locks, no tilt wheel, no power mirror adjustment, heck no right side mirror at all! I know - we had one like that, 85 half ton stripper with zero options! No AC either! 4 speed manal with granny gear, 4.3 V6 with carb and 110 HP! IIRC, it cost less than $10K. My mom took it down to the local car stereo shop and got an Alpine put in with some 6.5 door speakers because it was her daily driver. I watched them saw the holes in the dash and doors for the speakers. It was fantastic after that stereo installation. Mom was big into 60s rock and so was I. Learned to drive stick on that thing when I turned 16. Great truck. Slow wasn't quite an adequate description, but hey it got you from point A to point B reliably and had a rockin stereo for all those 80s tunes. Unfortunately we sold it in 88 because my dad got a job in Houston and my parents immediately went out and got cars with AC before we moved. Lol.
