@@bigmurph1447disagree on the gearing. 373 is good for cruising down the highway with or without a load. I’m not worried about getting off the line faster or increasing tow numbers. At a certain point, diesel becomes the viable option if that’s the concern. For what it is, the l8t is perfect.

I can't speak on the Duramax, never owned one. But, I have owned Dodge/Ram diesels since 1999. I was trading my Chevy Tahoe or Escalade that I use as business truck every few years, never getting close to 100k miles, my previous Dodge trucks had 200-300k miles on them when I traded and still had a good resale value. The extra cost in a diesel isn't worth it for people that are going to trade every 2-3 years with less than 50-60k miles and don't do a lot of towing. Don't know about the duramax but with the Ram diesels, longevity and resale value with higher mileage makes a difference compared to a gasser. I have been thinking about trading my current Tahoe for a High Country 2500 or Denali 2500 with duramax, but hesitant.

I have the '24 2500 LT Z71 crew cab gasser. I wasn't trying to evade the diesel upcharge, necessarily. It came down to payload (mine is 3,550 lbs., which is around 700-800 lbs. higher than the comparable diesel), as well as avoiding the awful emissions crap plaguing today's diesels. My gooseneck towing capacity is 18,200 lbs., a figure of which I will probably never get close. I don't want the headaches associated with those diesels and am very happy with my decision. I currently tow a 10k GVWR fifth wheel and hardly know it's back there. I am likely to buy a 12k GVWR unit soon and have zero concerns about the setup. JB has a point about elevation, but if you don't spend most of your time in the clouds, this truck is a great HD option.

Plenty of good reasons to get the gas truck depending on your use. Oil changes for the diesel will cost you more due to more quarts, more expensive filter. Overall maintenance costs and higher diesel fuel prices can eat your 'savings' right up. There's also plenty of good reasons to get the diesel if you tow a lot.
@charlesb4267
@charlesb4267 10 часов назад
The interesting part about the duramax vs the 6.6 gas is that it holds 8 quarts and also the 6.2 and 5.3 gas versions hold 8 quarts and the duramax 10 quarts. If I look up the synthetic oil for the gas vs the diesel ( Mobil in this scenario ) the price is the same per quart. The engine oil filter ... its the SAME filter now for all four of these engines which is very surprising but that is what they are currently doing. As to how often either engine type is going to be changed, there are a lot of variables there as well depending on personal preference ( I have not looked up what GM states for normal vs severe use for either ). One stark difference between the GM gas vs the diesel is the fact that the gas engine trucks have no fuel filter ( which is total bs in my mind ) and the diesels fuel filter is quite expensive or certainly is up here in Canada for the piddly filter they are. That alone changes the maintenance cost ( have not looked up the price of the air cleaner filter, one vs the other ). There seems to also be a theme through the years and that is shops tending to upcharge simply because its a diesel coming into the door to get the oil changed, not sure if that still holds water but used to. But the long and short is, if power for towing heavy and a fair bit of towing is planned, there is no question the diesel has the ability the gas can not match. Cold weather and shorter runs and not requiring the power, that is the killer of the horrid diesel emissions system.
@darens440
@darens440 8 часов назад
@@charlesb4267 For the gas V8 you can pickup all sorts of cheap oil like Kirkland Signature 5w30, Supertech Synthetic 5W30, any number of rebate and sale offers. For the DIY oil changer shopping deals 5W30 synthetic is very cheap. If you buy the 3.0 Duramax 1500 or 6.6 Duramax HD engines you can count on more expensive oil that is less frequently on sale.
@jayb7675
@jayb7675 2 месяца назад
If these engines were equivalent I could understand the comparison. But the diesel has almost 1k lbs of torque, twice as much as the gas. This extra torque makes a big difference off the line, towing, and especially passing other vehicles. I have 37s and a 4inch lift on my 3500 and it feels like a race car with all the diesel torque. The majority of HD trucks sold are diesel and it’s not to save gas money. It’s for the torque needed to handle the weight of a 4 ton vehicle.

However, driving just the truck, I wish it had faster acceleration and better mpg. I have 11k miles on it with lifetime mpg including towing at about 9.4 mpg. It's ass. I will say this, my freeway mpg went up from about 12-13 cruising at 75mph, and after about 9000 miles it went up to about 14ish mpg at 75mph. Once warranty is up, I may put a Whipple supercharger on it. But now that's like $15-20k lol

@AkioWasRight
@AkioWasRight 2 месяца назад
A DIY filter and oil for a Cummins 6.7L is nowhere near $250. With a bulk commercial price for oil, I don't even pay 1/3 that for DIY-ing oil changes. If you don't have bulk pricing, a 3 gallon pack of Rotella T6 is only about $70 at Walmart. Filters are more or less the same price with gas vs diesel. So, I have no idea where you're getting $250 from. Also, diesels have fuel filters and DEF, but then you don't have other services or issues to contend with, like tune ups. Brakes also last longer, much, much longer on HD diesels, particularly the Cummins. When I owned my gas Chevy 2500, I was burning up front pads every 18k-20k miles towing. With my Cummins 6.7L and its exhaust brake, front brakes will go 50k-60k miles easy. Over the life, that's thousands saved just in brakes. In the first 65k miles, the combined fuel and maintenance savings was over $8,000, which basically was the payback on the initially diesel investment.

There’s no financial benefit at all at running a diesel today. In a lot of cases they will cost more to operate. The only time they wouldn’t would be if you were just strictly towing with the truck. And even then the mpg difference is not much so depending on fuel cost they still might cost you more. And that’s not counting the diesel option cost. But I always say people should buy what they want. You got fanboys on both sides but diesel fanboys are the absolute worst. And a true diesel fanboy would never be satisfied with a gas HD. Some diesel guys think you need a 3500 dually to tow a single axle lawnmower trailer lol. The empty performance difference is just not that much. Look at your draggy results. If that would have been a side by side race at the 1/8th mile the diesel would have had about truck length advantage, if that. That’s not much. That’s negligible at best. Sure, towing there would be a difference. But as you said, your L8T even at your elevation held 50 mph towing your old 5th wheel. But again I say get what you want. I’m not considering a diesel again until the emissions are made more reliable. I’ll get to see how they are for the next couple years atleast with my buddy’s new 2024 Duramax. And based off his truck you are 100% correct that the fuel mileage has got worse. He’s getting the same mpg as my other buddy’s 2024 L8T and my 2022 L8T.
