2024 Dell XPS 16 Review

For 2024 the larger XPS laptop model gets a new CPU and a new design. The Dell XPS 16 (9640) shares the same design as the XPS 14 we reviewed, with a borderless trackpad, capacitive Fn row and a new keyboard. It looks stunning and is available with a FHD+ IPS or our 4K+ OLED touch display, Intel Core Ultra processors with AI and up to an NVIDIA RTX 4070.

As a current XPS user, I will never, ever use a laptop that doesn't have physical function keys.

Idk why every company watches the other one fail at making a good touch row and then try it themselves. Even Apple couldn't make it enjoyable to use.

@TheRunpoker I got a 2019 XPS 15, the last one with USB-A, HDMI, and a removable Wi-Fi card, for free after a 2017 XPS broke and they couldn't fix it (it had a warranty), but it took me escalating the issue to the executive level, basically Michael Dell level, to get the replacement. And of course, the 2020 model came out less than two weeks later. But apart from the two SSD slots, there wasn't any reason to get it (the 2015 - 2019 model only has one SSD slot). Heck, they even fixed the webcam issue on the 2019 model and while thermals were still pretty bad on it, it's decent for a 2019 computer, although the lower powered GTX 1650 Ti doesn't even have DLSS or enough vRAM, so I'm not sure if I can use it nowadays...

Dell went _way_ too far this time in copying Apple. Heck, even Apple realized that they went too far and were losing sales, so they were basically forced to abandon their 2016 - 2019 MacBook Pro design in favor of something actually usable for their customers. I mean, even Apple abandoned the Touch Bar, Thunderbolt/USB-C only, and making high-performance laptops too thin and the expense of everything else from performance and battery life to the butterfly keyboard that eventually had to be tossed completely because it wouldn't stop breaking no matter how many updates Apple tried. And now Dell thinks most of that is a good idea? They're going to learn why it's a bad idea the hard way...

I’ve used one XPS desktop and five XPS laptops in the past 14 years. I was about to get a new one since the latest I got was in 2017. After seeing the route Dell has chosen to go the past years, I decided to switch to another brand. The touch bar is the ultimate deal breaker.

Longtime XPS laptop user, and I purchased one of these! Overall I do like it, however it has a few serious problems. What I like: - Dell finally fixed the horrible material on the palmrest they've used for the past 12 years that was a fingerprint magnet and incredibly difficult to clean - There are no more fan vents on the bottom of the laptop, so you can actually use it on your lap or uneven surface without it heating up or the fans spinning up - I'm actually a fan of the touchpad, it surprisingly works great and looks nice as well. - 4K screen option on the XPS 16 is awesome and thankfully largely untouched from past models, and it being OLED is a plus. - Opening up the laptop is now easy again (Opening the outgoing XPS 15 was a massive pain). - The build quality is great, I can also tell they learned from the failure points of past XPS models and improved upon or fixed them What I don't like: - The function row obviously should be physical buttons. While I personally don't use those keys too often, and also don't mind the escape key, the delete key is incredibly frustrating to use. I also bet people who do use these keys frequently will hate it. Dell didn't even do anything to make this change worthwhile, like make the keys customizable where I could pick from hundreds of different glyphs/icons and assign the key to do whatever I wanted. Dell, just bring the physical keys back, what are you doing? - The price is way too expensive. Usually I will get an XPS every 4 years when they redesign it and the configuration I get is usually about $2,000. This time it was about $3,000 for the same configuration... What? I waited about a month for a big sale, but I should not have to wait for a sale for what should be the normal price point. - The color options are annoying. You now either have a silver exterior w/ white palmrest/keyboard or a graphite/almost black exterior w/ graphite palmrest. There is no way to get the color option that has been offered on this thing for 12 years: A silver exterior with a black/dark palmrest area. I think it would be great if Dell offered 4 or 5 exterior options and maybe 3 or 4 palmrest/keyboard color options and you could pick your own color combo. Would love to see options added that you could choose from like a gold exterior color option and a silver palmrest/keyboard option. - It's incredibly annoying that you can't get a 4K screen on the 14 inch, instead having to settle with this strange resolution that doesn't scale as well as 4K does on Windows. Also the default resolution for the XPS 16 being an ugly 1080p matte screen is crazy considering the 4K screen was the standard screen 4 years ago with the launch of the XPS 15, and the one before that. - There's no way to adjust the sound/speakers on the laptop, no EQ or anything. The speakers don't sound terrible on it, however on my prior XPS 15 where I was able to adjust EQ of the speakers, the difference is night and day

Great review. I had a Dell XPS a couple years ago and discovered a nasty trap with using a third party power supply. When using a non Dell power supply, the CPU clock speed was slowed to a ridiculously low value. Later I found a third party app that could restore the CPU clock speed to a usable value. Also the laptops battery would not charge when using a third party main’s adapter. Yes I did ensure the DC supplied to the laptop the same as the Dell mains adapter.

Great review, as always! I genuinely don't understand why companies insist on copying Apple's worst designs and never the (rare) GOOD designs. It's been happening for as long as I can remember, and it ALWAYS backfires. The touchbar is horrible and there's a reason Apple ditched it. Why not instead copy Apple's modular USB-C port design for when these inevitably break? It's a shame.

I don't remember ever hearing anyone, including my Apple-using comrades, say that they prefer a 16" display configuration to a 17". When Apple stopped making 17" displays I thought "well... Apple. They do what they want despite user preferences." But now there is no longer a 17" display configuration to be found. Are PC makers following Apple now? Your reviews are wonderful, and this one is no exception, but I'd love to hear you talk about the industrywide dismissal of the 17" format.
@sillystuff6247

It's not rocket science. 17" laptops get discontinued because they don't sell. They don't sell because they're too heavy. 17" will reappear only if laptop makers make them lighter.

It's clearly evident that every year millions trade in their TVs for larger screen models. Everyone wants the more luxurious experience of a larger display... except, it would seem, according to PC manufacturers. I'm suspicious of their thinking.

Why does Dell not learn from other computer manufactures mistakes. Why change the key spacing, why hide the track pad and why use touch keys...people don't need that, they need a traditional laptop that we all have become accustomed to and are happy using efficiently. What is supposed to change are the internals to higher capacities, high performance, more efficiency, better clarity, better connectivity and latest standards etc etc. Thanks Lisa for the review.

Outside of the electronic F keys and no type A port, the rest of the product is excellent in my opinion. Good build quality, 90hz screen refresh rate, Nvidia RTX GPU 4070 for gaming or video editing, and a 16-inch screen for lots of screen real estate. Also, the speakers on the right and left sides to maximize sound effects.

Lookinf forward to when you might get a change to review Apple's new 13" M4 iPad Pro & Magic Keyboard: Here's something I'd really like to know, given Apple's ongoing hype about iPad/keyboard combos as a 'replacement' for a laptop in Job's 'post-PC' world: Can we yet actually use it on our laps? Prior models were hopeles, would overbalance & had poor egonomics in this respect. Of course there remains the onging limitations with the dopey iOS (vs MacOS). But seriously, for all that vast amount of preice gouging, claims & promises: Can a 13" M4 iPad Pro with new keyboard and/or pencil in the lid really be used on one's lap or in other obvious 'on the go' locations? Or is it still confined to desktop use only, just like the models before it

Love your reviews, but the wattage on the cpu is 70 watts in ultra mode 45 in optimized it's25 percent faster than the 14 inch in multicore. I own the exact model you described, and Dell regularly sells it for 2899 and 150 for a 2 year warrenty. So it's actually cheaper than a non max Mac Book Pro 18 core with similar specifications. Combined with a fabulous screen, build quality Wi fF 7 excellent speakers, a non grease attracting keyboard that feels premium. Yes, some of this takes time to adjust to , but most will get the hang of it. You try to imply that it can't game well,l that simply is not true. It's also more than capable for demanding video editing. I owned a Mac Book Pro 16, and I hated Mac OS, especially the file system, and the gaming experience is very limited. You also, failed to mention how much cooler and quieter it is than all gaming laptops it's smilar to a Mac Book. It's the best combination power battery life with a large screen size in the smallest form factor. Is it expensive? Yes, as are most premium products. I think just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't mean it's not a great laptop, and it's certainly not just because its design esthetics are class leading. However, some people love the notch esthetic.

My Dell XPS 15 still looks amazing as fxck and will always be the best looking sexy laptop, why would I need this one which is just a copy past of old Macbook? -_-

I just don’t get it. I feel like this is a laptop intended for people who do some sort of professional work on it. So many professionals make use of f-keys and not having physical keys really slows you down. I used to have the MacBook Pro with touchbar and hated it for that reason.

so far the xps lineup has not been able to keep up with professional engineering work. it overheats and underclocks to around 1ghz. i doubt it would do well in video / photo editing either. i do not recommend these thin and lights unless you are buying it for the status image or expensive social media machine

Dell XPS is not a consumer electronic. It's an enterprise electronic. Only professionals should buy these.

Nope. This is more of a MacBook Air competitor but with a puny dGPU. And Apple actually has a similar port selection when plugged in to the XPS 16. Oh, and for once it has a better keyboard, touchpad, and battery life.

DOA. The Surface Pro 6 leak reveals a higher Geek bench multiscore than a Macbook Air M3. Intel is done for.

Had mine for a month now. If you want a high spec model (64GB RAM, 2TB SSD) its actually not too bad compared to other options. In fact, there are few 64GB RAM models to choose from (in Australia). The keyboard is okay - you certainly get used to it. The rest of the package is pretty amazing - super fast, screen is gorgeous, and battery life is pretty good. I'm happy.

I just got an XPS 14, the screen door effect on the OLED is so disappointing. I like to have the computer on my chest when on the couch, the screen looks like a news paper up close. Whites and greys are mud. This is NOT a "gorgeous" display. The red dots from the touch digitizer are obvious closer than ~20inches from the display. I am stunned that they'd ship a product like this. This is a hard pass for any sort of artwork, and its even annoying to look at a spreadsheet cause the array of red dots really pops on a white screen. I like the laptop a lot, but this screen is a crime. Color accuracy and resolution are moot when you put a grid of red dots on top of it all.

Because it's a massive downgrade from even the 2023 XPS 17 in pretty much every way. And it makes Razer and Apple look like bargain computers in comparison.

@@cameronbosch1213 I disagree on every way. Better battery life, better screen refresh rate (90hz), better web camera, and faster keyboard response time (From 37 ms to 1 ms). However, I do acknowledge things that got worse. Examples: RAM isn't adjustable, CPU performance is worse, less powerful max GPU, and less screen real estate at 16-inch.

How is this an upgrade compared to last year's model? 16,3 instead of 17 inch Display No physical function keys The keyboard looks nice but doesn't seem very functional. Only 3 USB-C ports instead of 4 Only a micro SD Card slot instead of a standard sized one. Only 1 SSD slot instead of 2 No upgradable RAM because it's soldered to the motherboard. GPU options are the same as last year. The only real improvement seems to be the CPU with the embedded NPU cores that almost nobody needs right now. Plus a price increase because of all these "great" innovations.

Disappointing. I bought an XPS 15 years ago for its reliability, upgradability and performance. Could almost swear the ram was not soldered an I changed the wifi card.I couldn't care less about capacitive fn keys or a keyboard that isn't as easy to type on as standard laptop keyboards. I guess my next laptop won't be an XPS.

Oh yeah, who is going to risk it? My last XPS15 got like 4 motherboard replacements, never have I met with such a flawed/unreliable design, never more for me. Another company I used to work with had the same exact experience/acquired policy.

Dame Dell really screwed up with the new XPS line. That touch row on top is terrible! The trackpad without the border line is also another crap idea! I guess they enjoy losing customers/money! 💯
