Large fashion companies are selling more and more clothing. That is why their CO2 emissions are increasing. To keep these emissions within limits, the number of clothing items that consumers buy must be reduced. According to a German study, a maximum of five new items of clothing per year fit into a sustainable consumption pattern. Dutch consumers are far above that with an average of ten items of clothing per year. People with high incomes in particular buy a lot: the 20 percent highest incomes make about 40 percent of fashion purchases, while the 20 percent lowest incomes are responsible for less than 10 percent of purchases. Efficiency measures, such as electrifying factories and using better materials, do not deliver enough to achieve the 2030 climate goals. But fashion brands and the European Union have few plans to curb clothing consumption. # Follow the Money What story do consumers mainly hear about fashion? 'That it is normal or even desirable to buy a lot of clothes and throw them away in no time. The messages we see about fashion are almost always about new things, about what is in and what is out. Implicitly, it's all about the message that things give us status: by wearing the latest trends, you show that you are successful. For example, the fashion industry encourages people to buy huge amounts of stuff, as if all this has no consequences for the planet.' Who is responsible for that message? 'First of all, the fashion brands. Within those companies it is the marketing and communications departments and the social media teams. But there is also a whole ecosystem around it of people and organizations that spread and strengthen that story: fashion magazines, advertising and marketing agencies, stylists, photographers, videographers, influencers.'
I had this feeling that we were going to incorporate darker fantasy into the trends for some time now and I'm glad to see that you've predicted this too
It's all part of the resurgence of romanticism and escapism, most likely as a result of horrible living conditions and the world going to shit in general!
that's so true! i feel like a veeeerrryy small portion of the population actually follows/cares about niche trends, though the algorithm makes it seem like more
none of the trends in the video seem confortable or even practical to wear on a daily basis. I understand that's not a problem for fashion enthusiasts, but i doubt i will be seeing any of these trends on the wild this year
Very true. While certain elements of these things may be adapted into regular society’s wear (like bows currently) most of these things are NOT the standard. Which is interesting compared to previous years. In the 2010s everyone in the general population had their chevron and colorful skinny jeans and weird scarves. Today the general sentiment is more, casual wear as everyday wear while on the internet these high detailed fashions live. Of course I see the occasional person wear something along these lines but more often than not, unless you’re in a city, these fashions don’t see the light of day for the average person
I don’t agree. Where I live I can see little bits of popular trends in every day fashion. I love how the creator talks about how you may not wear a puffy shirt but you’ll have puffy sleeves or a frilly neckline. Like hardly anyone is doing a whole punk pirate outfit but you’ll be seeing pieces of this trend all over.
It was once called the 20 year rule, then it seemed to shorten to the 10 year rule, but now it looks like we’re having a 5 year rule in fashion; once “the rule” catches up with us do we hit fashion nirvana?
if the cycle gets short enough we haven't even decluttered the garments from last time they were "in" and we don't have to buy anything new. Hopefully people will get wise and just hang on to things they like until they come back around.
I really like that there’s always a counter fashion trend like, 2023 was the year of the “pink” hyper-femme barbie & the punky dark edgy crochet artist, and I can’t wait for 2024’s Croquette Angels & the Pirate Demons
I’d also take it a step further to say the Gothic Lolita fashion popularized in Japan is going to make a heavy return to American fashion. Especially with the revival of dark renaissance styles. I’d say Lace parasols, Deep Purples, and Maroon color palettes will be making a huge comeback!
I don’t think Whimsigoth will ever go out of style right now. Whimsigoth seems to be under the same umbrella for goth or edgy that punk pirate, e-girl, and emo sat at (not saying they’re the same at all). It’s the alt look. And I love it. I think darker renaissance inspired looks are going to have a resurgence in at least the first half of the 2020s.
While I love whimsigoth, I could say it's just a revival of boho/70s silhouettes, colors and textures. Maybe I'm lacking some new aspect, exclusive from whimsigoth... We are just revisiting the styles from the whole XX century, that's the way fashion works after all.
I couldn’t stop screaming with every new trend that you mentioned. PUNK PIRATE, PUFFY SHIRTS, MILITARY JACKETS, VICTORIAN BOOTS - I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE READY 🫡🫡🫡
I love charm, bracelets and charm necklaces! I’ve also always loved pins and broaches and collected them and now I’m going to purposely put them on some jeans or a Jean jacket haphazardly!! or even maybe a purse that is a little plain and boring!!
@@nataliabennett8157 sure but the last few years sht came back and went away every few years, sometimes months, just to be rebranded as something new when it wasn't and this way everything felt like it was stuck in a small circle and I hope we will get out. Bc the cycle of trends is supposed to be much bigger and take way longer to repeat than how it did lately
nah these "trends" aren't even anything new, probably because I'm alt and I've seen firsthand that most of the things in this list have existed in these circles for so long (ie brooches, bows, "victorian inspired" clothing, safety pins, flannels, etc.), they're really cliche alt trends that just so happened to become mainstream and made into cheap fast fashion stuff instead of DIYed and/or thrifted (where it originated)
I think a big underpinning trend I'm noticing (and loving) is the shift away from heavy reliance on poly synthetic/ highly printed fabrics that we saw in the 2014-2021 period (think the highly saturated cow print, physcadelic prints, cherbub and clouds etc...) and towards natural fabrics as there is more growing consciousness around sustainability, combined with the "quiet luxury"/ "old money" trends. A lot of the trends you have here, i.e. gingham, puffy shirts are heavily reliant on cotton fabrication! I think the cotton, fur, silk of the Jane Birkin vibe is totally aligned with this too. Loooove it.
As a girl who’s been obsessed with pirates since I was a kid and ends up being a pirate most Halloweens (including in 2023), I’m ecstatic that piratey fashion will be on trend because I definitely see fashion going in this direction. Mermaidcore was so popular last year and it definitely has some overlap with that and I’ve noticed that lots of jewelry all worn at once is also getting popular, which is very piratey as well. I’m so excited for this!
My ancestor Richard Worley is a famous pirate. Why is no one screaming cultural appropriation in this case? He literally invented the Jolly Roger flag and was hung after being captured. Pirates from many cultures exist and it should be viewed as being just as offensive as dressing up in Native American garb! 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️and I am NOT the woke and easily offended type just calling out the hypocrisy. If a white girl wears braids people foam at the mouth but people can turn my ancestors pain into a fun aesthetic? Make it make sense! 🏴☠️
I think everything is just becoming more gaudy and larger than life which I loveeee. Also, this DIY vibe in the direction of bows, button, pins etc. is so going to bring on a resurgence of sewing and creating your own pieces. If not they’re at least going to start buying from smaller owners to get more of a unique look!!!
The DIY-vibe makes sense to me because a lot of these trends have a hint of the mid 2010s to them which was the peak of DIY / craft / tutorial videos on RU-vid!
Yes!!! I said this to my mate last year making your own clothes will be the next big thing! It'll also be triggered by/ trigger a back to femininity movement. Darning and makign your own clothes, makeup, jewelry. Traditionally feminine things, especially with the resurgence of victorian themes, when most women made their own clothes
Nah, people are probably just going to buy second hand clothing and then discard It after the trend dies, It's a circle that only repeats and never stops. Let's not get too excited.
@@_jelly._.levi_9430exactly, plus from my experience as an alt person, most people are a lot less creative than we wish people were (hell, I only know a handful of people in my ART COLLEGE that can sew their own clothes/accessories on). Some fast fashion brand is bound to sell cheap premade versions of these "trends" and people who can't be bothered to sew their own stuff will just buy from those stores, especially when they don't know much better about sustainable fashion and why these "trends" came into existence in the first place (aka, they originated from punk/alt fashion which is anti capitalism and encourages DIY and individualism).
I was hoping someone would suggest this! The way the had everyone at Oxford dressed in the popped collar shirts and juicy tracksuits instead of defaulting to dark academia which would be the stereotype really added a layer of realism there because everyone, even the very wealthy kids was dressing like that during that era
Since Saltburn came out I’ve seen a ton of people wanting to go back to the indie sleaze aesthetic, makes so much sense that so many of these new trends fit in it! I’m excited because I was too young and broke the first time around 😅
Miss Emerald inspiring us again with fashion. Promising Young Woman was the reason I started wearing more pastels and youthful clothing, I adored Cassandra's clothes 🩵🩷💛🤍
I haven’t watched it but definitely seen indie sleaze slowly coming back, I’ve seen others along with myself rocking side swept bangs again and definitely seen more people go to black hair or burgundy.
It’s very strange the way Gen Z Is so open about changing and accepting new aesthetics. Gen X sees people like that as posers. Like no one who was emo or grunge would admit it was an aesthetic back then.
Please please if you want to participate in these trends, do not order from fast fashion brands. Pretty much all of these trends can be very easily found from thrift stores. The racks are full of flannels and cool jackets, and you can find a bunch of cheap shirts to distress for an edgy, unique look. Skull motifs can be added to clothes with embroidery, "cut and paste" -method or even painting with bleach. And this was already mentioned in the video, but buttons, pins, studs etc. can be found anywhere, if you know where to look: from thrift, in your grandma's cookie tin, even from old clothes. If an event is handing out free pins, I usually take a bunch and then paint them. Punk and grunge are anti-fashion subcultures. Diy and second-hand clothing is part of the culture. It is not punk to order a band shirt from shein and support child-labor.
that's what I never understood about these "trends". The point of punk/alt fashion is to be "anti-fashion", "anti-capitalism" and "anti-consumerism", so while it's understandable to take inspo from these sorts of styles, these "trends" are going to be so far-removed from it's origin as most people apparently can't even do DIYs or thrift well (ie. they're bad at sewing and can't be bothered to learn, some thrift stores are expensive and/or don't sell certain pieces like vintage boots, victorian blouses, etc. they're more common than you think), and thus a lot of these origins will temporarily lose its meaning until someone tries to find a way around that.
If you like style you don't have to follow or care about what's currently on trend, if you mean them, wear what you like or liked to wear, I'd guess you formed a personal taste from the years you were following fashion.
Interesting how heavily Victorian and Pirate inspired this is. Also in music I think pop + rock is predicted to be popular this year from what I heard. 2024 is giving "grunge of the 2020's"
High disagree. Imo, rap will get heavier a la sigilkore, eventually mixing with the nu metal revival a la loathe, and the two genres will hybridize - judging by all the collabs bring me the horizon has going on, and whatever tf playboi carti and lil uzi vert are doing. Rock itself won't come back majorly unless surf rock explodes the way garage rock revival did in the early 2000s, but i don't see a current music hub birthplace like nyc or seattle was. Or a the strokes or the white stripes type band that's going to make it mainstream yet. Closest we got was Surf Curse. @@dw9524
I definitely love the colour trends (cherry red, wine red, jewl tones etc.), I think the Victorian boots and renaissance motifs have some great potential and I'd like to see what people can make with these
though I HATE the notion of calling things “core”, I like the unique historical inspired takes these “trends” are following. It’s very on theme for the met gala this year!
I also dislike it, mostly because they're kind of redundant (ie. "scenecore" or "bimbocore" as if scene and bimbo aren't already pre-existing styles/lifestyles?). They also feel uninspired/unoriginal(?) imo (in a sense that they just slap the suffix "-core" into a word instead of making a witty name for the style)
i remember last year you predicted that bows and ribbons would be making a comeback and i honestly didn’t believe it but you were right! i can’t wait to spot all your other predictions throughout this year🤣
I feel like it's been said before, but it's wild to watch your yearly prediction videos and watch them slowly (or quickly) play throughout the year! If it's a year of no sharp contouring and more whimsical pirates then I'm all in.
As someone who likes to see the trends, I always look towards kpop because they have some amazing stylist who have already started doing these trends in 2023. Military coats which almost every idol has worn in 2023 and a whole group doing pirate grunge concept for an album and mv and another who’s concept was being stranded on an island after a shipwreck with an amazing wardrobe of distressed pants and shirts. So most of these I’ve already seen especially the baby features which is also present a lot in Japan.
i feel like the late 2000s and early 2010s culture will slightly make its way to the forefront. we saw earlier 2000s trends popularized in the early 2020s so far, so i feel like most emo and internet culture of 2008-2011 will DEF find its way in 2024
I NEED dresses with boxy shoulders, collars and medium length sleeves and short flirty length. Im boyish-looking (“gamine” essence) and mod dresses are the only dresses that work for me and dresses are so convenient cuz its only 1 article !! I find stuff that fits this style but not often
I feel like now that gyaru is finally making its rounds again, and even moreso now that it’s more known outside of Japan, I’ve been seeing a lot of cat print (one of the staples of gyaru fashion) getting worn more. I’ve been seeing it a lot amongst influencers especially since you can get them in various colors depending on your style palette and I’m here for it 💕
This is going to be my year in fashion 😅 I also think what counts into pirate fashion, is something like cluttered clown / mad hatter fashion. I have spotted a few people rocking this look lately and it looks super inspiring.
This is so bittersweet to me, because I recently have decided I liked basically all fashion trends that are mentioned in this video on my own, so I am excited to see these come into fashion because I really like all these trends but im also a little sad because a dumb part of my brain also just really wants to be unique lol. But I’m mostly excited if these trends really do come true (: which I highly expect they will.
I'l just keep on dressing like it's 1965 - every few years I'm automatically on trend 🙂 Small nitpick: Fran Fine was NOT promiscuous - she waited for the same many years. Don't judge a book by its cover.
I've been into gothic fashion for the past year and it's scary how accurate this list is. I love Victorian styles, I've been purchasing more jewelry pieces with skulls in them AND I have a small brooch collection. 😳
As someone who likes to see the trends, I always look towards kpop because they have some amazing stylist who have already started doing these trends in 2023. Military coats (very popular in kpop) and a whole group doing pirate grunge concept for an album and mv and another who’s concept was being stranded on an island after a shipwreck with an amazing wardrobe of distressed pants and shirts. I really hope the Beads, Buttons and Brooches trend comes to fruition because it's honestly one of my favorites! It's so cute, and it scratches the maximalist part of my brain that just loves the trinket aspect of it all. A lot of these trends are so iconic though loving the direction that we're going in
It’s finally time for things to be beautiful again 🥺 I am so tired of minimalism and boxiness and clean lines It’s been hard to find items in my personal style just bc they’re not mainstream- excited to have more options soon!!!!
Ooh yes!! I want to delve deeper into that 80’s New Wave Romantic and Trad Goth aesthetic. Right now my fashion inspo is David Bowie in the movie Labyrinth. Very dreamy, elegant, and fairytale-like!!
I gotta say, I'm super impressed by catching on to piratecore/piratepunk! I've been very involved that community as it's grown in spaces on Pinterest and tumblr in the last two ish years. Super excited to see this hit the mainstream, it's just so much fun and whimsical to play around with. I suspect if it's set to hit the mainstream, that it will come into fashion around late spring, when people are eager to get into warm weather clothes and experiment with new motifs. I definitely see the puffy shirts coming in too, with piratecore and vampunk
I'm so happy to see peplums making a return, a lot of people apparently think they're ugly but i've always really loved the silhouette that a peplum top can give!!
I love piratecore! I'm auntie, 37 years of age, and remembered well to not throw away my custom made by yours truly Jimmi Hendrix inspired military jacket. Renaissance inspirations are something to watch as well. A couple of weeks ago, I made a lovely stays inspired by Vivienne Westwood. Now I need to find a peplum that I do not dispise.
as someone who dresses grungy with goth inspiration (and also listens to goth and grunge music), I am worried about these alternative subcultures becoming mainstream and people ignoring the politics and virtues of the groups. I already saw someone call themself a "clean goth". having ppl call these subcultures an aesthetic or trend leaves a bad taste in my mouth
I agree and It’s so ironic how people are trying to make goth and punk trendy when most of the culture derived from poverty and now capitalizing off of it.
Health goth? My friends used to call themselves that when they got to their thirties and forties and started going to the gym - running on a treadmill, listening to Bauhaus. Don’t worry, subcultures will cycle in and cycle out, and we’ll still be the weirdos as everyone else moves on. No one cares about the message, but guarantee they’ll pretend to for some RU-vid videos.
Goth and Punk have long moved on from their initial roots and became detached from their ideals. In fact, the only thing counter-culture about it is actually the fashion. Both - Goth even more so than Punk - have become mere aesthetics with a cool music scene, so it would be best to not gatekeep and just enjoy whatever aspects of the style you like
Oh hell yes, this year im finally gonna find clothes in regular stores that actually match my taste in fashion 😂 skulls, spikes, flannel, rips and tears I’m so excited
Yaaaaaay looks like I'll finally be able to hop on that soft grunge train that I missed in 2010s (alas, due to being too ashamed to express myself through clothes). If this part of your forecast plays out, I'll be so happy!
I’m excited for velvet and brocade. I don’t ever feel like I’m living in the “wrong era” 🤢 (I would’ve died a few days after being born 100 years ago and before the age of 2 even 40 years ago) but I do enjoy modern takes renaissance styles and ADORE velvet and rich, jewel toned colors
I did have a feeling that punky fashion elements would rise in popularity again after the passing of Vivienne Westwood. She basically WAS the punk era. That was her like first surge in prominence and it's the era and sub culture we most associate with her.
Rips and tears have already been a big trend, especially in the diy world. Along with the gingham, gingham was such a 2020 Danish pastel aesthetic trend.
So fun! Thanks for this 🥰 I see a lot of these coming in already! I’m most excited for the victorian boots and military jackets! I’m not often a trend follower, I like what I like whether others like it or not! It always depends on my mood for the season or even day and I guess you could say i love combining popular trends from different eras within each outfit!
Love watching these! Really does help me narrow down what and why I love fashion/dressing up. Just the character & persona created with the combination of different styles makes my heart happy
Adding to the victorian boots trend - a very popular shoe worn by musical theater performers, LaDuca, has a victorian-esque boot. I've been waiting for a celebrity to be spotted wearing them out on the street (even though they're dance shoes).
Pirate shirts, peplums, victorian boots, studs, brooches, and leopard print! Im so excited! Basically, just YES to everything on this list. I've even got a pair of disco pants already sitting in my closet!
i wrote an article for VICE called ‘We’re Powerless to Trends and Peplum Tops Prove It’ which explores why the peplum has arrived sooner than expected! So strange to see things i still feel averse to coming back around eek.. Fashion really is at an odd and exciting place. ty for the video (-:
Everything about these trends is making me so excited! Granny boots, renaissance details, pirate vibes… Everything I already love and you’re telling me it’s going to be trendy and easy to find? I can’t wait.
Year of the pirate☠💎 But seriously though, i am super excited to see how many of these predictions come true (I'm hoping for soft, rounded make-up and the skeloton patterns)
I am growing bitter that diy technics are considered trendy, because it means fast fashion will tear the look to shreds and what was considered unique will die when the trend will go away
not me realising i wore a peplum with a renaissance motif bag and victorian boots to my graduation last year, i guess these tends are already subconsciously catching up with us! & thanks for a lovely and insightful video as always
I enjoy these videos so much, I would love to see a video on how you do research for these videos cause GOD do I admire that and appreciate all the work you put in preparation for these videos.
Hearing about the predictions of more edgy fashion trends coming back (which I have started to see) gets me so excited because a lot of that has always been inspiring to me and hopefully this year I’ll be able to add a couple pieces to my closet that really suit the personal style I strive for ❤
I'm most looking forward to the skulls and skeletons, but the whole outlook is a win to me. I didn't see a single upcoming trend you've predicted that I wouldn't enjoy indulging in. Both my husband and I love puffy shirts (and have since before we met in 2001), so I need to be sure to get us some of those at the very least. Edit: Well, I'm not huge on pre-distressing or rips and tears, so I'll pass on that, but I do see how it will play into everything else.
This is so spot on. I have also been thinking that everything listed will resurface!! (Apart from the gingham) I forgot that style was even a thing but it makes sense that it would make a comeback! I'm so excited for the fashion scene that we will see coming up. I feel like we're bringing life back to our clothing!
I love how all the little articles of clothing that I’ve been searching for, for SOOOO LONG are starting to get popular like Victorian shoes, pirate shirts, military and leather vests/jackets and MOST of all leopard print ugh ty fashion you always come around ❤
Victorian boots where not meant to cover the ankles but to protect you from the mud and slop of messy 19th century streets (lots of horse poop and human excreta). Evening wear (didn't have to worry about walking the streets) throughout the century were essentially slippers or flats, many with low heels, not too different in design than various styles of heels in the 20th and 21st century.
